Magic moments with the great Glen Campbell singing to an audience of all star country music greats. Dedicated to the memory of Glen and all my faithful subscribers. Enjoy!
It is not even close…..not even in the same dimension….Glen Campbell is almost without peer in his talent and variety and skill. I am blessed to have been able to see and hear his talent.
Absoulutly correct. Standing on a stage screaming F-bombs and seeing how much of your ass crack you can get a way with by this new fad or whatever a person calls it?Glen had style, amazing song writing talent, voice was one of a kind, his picking on his guitar was and still is a pure pleasure to listen to. True musician and singer songwriter that have gone sadly passed on. Thanks Glen Travis Campbell .
I know, me too. He was a prodigy on the guitar. He could play anything on his guitar by the time he was 8 years old. At least now Mary we can appreciate all that he’s accomplished. 🙂❤️
I really like the composition of that verse. He establishes that his need is greater than what he wants but then says that his want is basically limitless. In my opinion he is saying that his want of her and his need of her is immeasurable!
@@glenmorgan4597 The future is nothing without our better half. The future of our family, country, and maybe the world. Our life is bound up in others, and yet we experience a lot of life alone anyway. We have no choice but to work hard, if not for ourselves for them. Some knowledge that might have been acquired at great personal cost since they don't teach much about such things in school. The world has trended toward disposable relationships, so there is an heroic aspect of standing firm against change. That's my long winded take on these 15 words, anyway.
I heard this song when it first put Glenn on the map when I was a little boy and have heard many versions thereafter. However, this rendition with the back-up band and Janie Fricke's harmonies added to Glenn's flawless enunciation of every syllable (like only Glenn can do) and his fret-work fills on the guitar, may be the best recording ever of this timeless classic.
Comment from another video of this song: "My Dad was a lineman in the Midwest for 35 years. He walked in 5 minutes late to work one morning and his boss asked him why he was late. He explained that Wichita Lineman came on the radio as he was pulling in. The whole crew nodded approvingly and his boss said it was an acceptable excuse. Glen Campbell was such a legend."
Do any of you realize the powerhouse people sitting with Glen?? These are the elite of the elite in country music, starting with Kris Kristofferson. Glen Campbell is a legend, playing for the Beach Boys and other bands. He is truly unappreciated!
I love how Kris Kristofferson puts his head back and closes his eyes when Glen sings the line "And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time." He's probably heard it a thousand times but theres something about the song and that line that really digs at your soul. RIP Glen Campbell your songs will live forever in so many hearts.
Since I first saw this clip I was struck by the same reaction from Kris. I always imagined him to be saying to himself " I wish I would have wrote that line."
I heard Chris say many years ago in an interview that "I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time" is one of the greatest song lyrics ever written. I'm sure that's what he's reacting to.
Holy cow! One of the greatest songwriters ever sitting next to one of the greatest guitar players ever with my teenage crush, Crystal Gayle sitting behind them. Wow!
best rendition of this he ever did in my opinion. Kris Kristoferson sitting right there. man. Thank you Lord for saving Glen. Seeing Kris enjoying this makes the song really seem special.
Yes, that's why I find it hard to hear, more so to watch the great Glen play and sing. Glad to know I am not the only only who feels this song remembering it coming out the old radio in our house, as a kid, knowing something quite haunting is accurate. The Ameriana part too, an era, a time, we will never see again, so I get sad.
I was at his farewell tour in 2012 Newcastle city hall UK England & to be in his presence this giant of talent was incredible an absolute one off we won’t see the likes again
“Giants”of their time appreciating one of their own. Don’t recognize all the faces but I love the look Ms Crystal Gayle is wearing. Lost in the beauty of the moment.
And one of the best songwriters who ever lived sitting back, shaking his head, and wondering at the beauty of that line "And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time"
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. I saw him in his farewell tour and his voice was still perfection. Thank you, Glen Campbell. The music lives forever. ❤
@Tracey Whitney you're one lucky lady! it must have been a great experience seeing him perform😊i wish, I wish I could have seen him live as well, but I discovered Glen's music only after he passed away😢
It was such a wonderful and beautiful time in life when we had true musicians like this. The songs they wrote, their performances, their talent, and it was on the radio. Songs that pulled emotions and created memories.
Luck. It is to be alive. Fortune. It is to be enriched. Beauty. It is to behold the works of the hand of god. In my 57 years I am so lucky to have been enriched by Glen Campbell who has given us some of the most beautiful music every laid down by any human being ever. It doesn’t get better than that and so I am at peace.
What a master...glen has influenced all through my life....I am60 years old and still play guitar from even the 80s with the long hair. what a Treasure Glen has been on my mind.
I can't stand most "country" music, but always loved Glenn's music, and this song in particular; it's evocative while speaking about desire and pain and human journey, without mentioning Budweiser or pickup trucks even once.
I was fifteen when this song came out and that lyric.." I need you more than want you and I want you for alltime" blew me away...still the greatest lyric ever written..Jimmy Webb.. Genius
To see clearly the instant transformation of famous professional musicians at Glenn Campbell's huge, subtle talents speaks volumes of respect. It starts on the first note and they're not just listening, but absorbing the beauty of the best guitar player in a room full of very high talent. There, as many such world famous guitarists and songwriters have said, is one of the top five guitarists there has been. Such as typically highly acclaimed guitarists like Eddie Van Halen, Willy Nelson, Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Paul McCartney, James Taylor and Steve Walsh. They understand. That our last two generations of youth don't know Campbell is beyond their thinking. That children elevate pop stars higher is a tragedy.
Campbell was truly an amazing guitar player. Eddie Van Halen even once said in an interview that he thought that Glen Campbell was one of the finest guitar players there ever was.
This song reminds of when I was a front line teenage grunt Marine Rifleman in Vietnam 1968. It was playing all the time on armed forces radio, it gave me much comfort to hear this song over & over again. At the time I had doubts if I’d ever make it back home alive.
While you listened to it in Vietnam I heard it as a small child curled up in and out of sleep in the back seat of the car on long drives. Welcome home, God Bless you and thanks for serving our Great nation. Thanks also for sharing your experience. It may not have been much easier coming home at that time than it was being there. As a service man myself, I salute you!
Maybe it’s my age, but Jimmy Webb’s writing and Glens singing is pure bliss . . . Love Kris Kristoffersons reaction. . . “I need you more than want you “ best line ever!
when my mom was alive this was her favorite... as a 62 year old ex guitarist of rock and roll this is probably the best guitarist i have ever heard....
Oh my so am I. So thankful to have been able to see this masterful musician in his hey day. He was so incredibly gifted and gone forever. This kind of talent will never come around again. Such a deeply rooted piece of Americana. Thank you Glen.
When a song moves both Crystal and Kris, you know you're "rock'n it"! I love that Glen gave us boomers some really heartfelt songs as kids growing up (60/70's), wasn't half bad in True Grit either. RIP Glen, singing with the, Heavenly Choir now.
I remember his show on TV as a kid in the 70's . My mom was a big fan. I also remember John Hartford playing with him. Those where the days with only Four channels to watch but they where great! He was a Supreme talent a virtuoso on the guitar! R.I.P. Glen. 🎸
The woman singing harmony behind Glen was the icing on the cake for me, and that Gm chord! It's interesting how the staccato throughout is an imitation of electricity running through the wires.
Glen Travis Campbell? First time I heard his middle name all together. What a talent he was and his legacy in his hair and how his music touched us all in good ways. RIP.
I concur a million percent…..Glen was on a level that I certainly can’t comprehend. To him it’s easy - phenomenal musicality, technique and tone in voice and guitar.
As a lover of music and Glen Campbell, this may be his Greatest Performance of that song! It's flawless both vocally and musically! What an amazing Musician, a gifted Prodigy and his Gifts will be left until the end of time as he now performs with the Greatest Band of all: The Angel Band and what a Band it must Be!!!
Glenn was a totally under-rated guitar player and singer. You know it's classic song when everyone on stage is mouthing the words or singing along in harmony.
We saw Jimmy in 2019 at Grand Theater in Lewisville, Texas. Would have paid 10 times the price we did before the show and 100 times the price after. What talent. Great writer and story teller. 300 people or so sized place. Blew us away.
My good crazy friend Billy McPherson who was the sax player for Buddy Miles used to play for Jimmy Webb in LA. I said " You played in the studio for Jim Webb, why'd you leave?". He said " there's nothing to do there but go to the pancake House ".
For my money the finest writer ever. The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress is the greatest song I ever heard and I was lucky to see him do it from the front row when Jimmy came here to the Detroit area a few years back. Front row for the next one too in Ann Arbor next year!
Just watching Kristoferson taking it in is amazing. All the songs that guy wrote and performed and hes so into Campbell's performance. That kinda gets me.
Kris’s a face and body language at 142 when he deliver s what must be the most epic but simple lines ! Plus anyone notice him time the guitar halfway through a Chris change !! Man was a genius ! His delivery of Jimmy webb’s music , and jimmys songs ! Are perfection😊
I don't care what genre music you love you must appreciate the massive hit this was at the time. Such an emotional love song. Brilliantly written and played and sung. Rest in peace brother.
So beautiful and haunting. And here in January 2024 we've had several Lineman kinds of days. Many thanks for Glen's performance, Jimmy Webb's song, and this upload.
What I love best about these country star gatherings is when Glen plays and the others realize this is one fantastic genius on all aspects of his entertaining all of us. He is so perfect on his guitar playing, you see the other guys who play just so happy and mesmerized as to how he can play so perfectly and in detail live, on the spot. He is truly a professional musician and singer, and handsome entertainer.
@@eddiehaskell5578 Hard getting older, but would never have missed those incredible times of the 60s and yes to about 99.. If I had to pick a single year of the best music, esp American made, I would pick 1969 and 1970. Some of the songs make me sad and nostalgic.
Glen’s resume is STACKED!! Between The Wrecking Crew, The Beach Boys, and his own catalog and TV show, he’s truly one of kind! PS- he also did the voice to a cartoon from when I was a kid called Rock-a-doodle-doo.
Amazing that he was so highly respected among the top tier musicians known as the "Wrecking Crew". Musicians that could sightread & play pretty much any type of music. Most came from the jazz and big band era. Gives you a measure of his talent that they all recognized. Glen couldn't read music but played from his heart.
It’s staggering how one can feel so deeply for a fictional character, expressed in so few words, glorious melody, and simple structure. Jimmy Webb, you genius. Glen Campbell, the effortless, master performer.
This song came on the radio one night when I was up for days plowing snow in a blizzard. I was exhausted having not slept in days. This song really hit home that night.
The way his voice meshes with his guitar is of another world! It’s on a whole nother level and his guitar playing ability and watching his moves is like nothing else!
The GOAT Merle Haggard once said that Glen had more talent in his little finger than most everyone else. Merle and Glen are definitely my GOAT. Sooooo good!
Just incredible. I love how these pros stand back to let another sing, and come in when they can. Such a group....and many now gone. God bless all of you. Thank for sharing these treasures.
I once heard Carol Kaye (original bass player on the recording) say that years after this song was a hit she was shopping and it came on in the store. She said it was so beautiful she broke down in tears. I can see why
Greatness in the presence of greatness Kristoferson and Campbell Kris's reaction when Glen sings "and I need you more than want you and I want you for all time" is priceless. Powerful There will never be another Glen. Such a talent
Glen Campbell was of another level ; watch his peers all great musician's in their own right almost as though they can't believe his God given talent . Such a guitarist that alone blows me away along with his vocals . I never get tired of listening to him . RIP Glen , you made the world a better place .
How about that dude over his shoulder at 1:15 when Glen plays that lick. He's not surprised but still amazed to the point he looks to be laughing a little.
Merle Haggard once said "If there was ever a case of God putting too much talent in one individual, it was Glen Campbell."
Looks and talent. Merle said Glenn went through the lines more than once
Great quote
I heard Merle say that about Glen and he really meant it. That's really a big compliment.

They don't have Glenn s class or talent!
I hate to admit it, but I didn't appreciate Glen as much as I should have back in the day - he was sooo good
I know, me too. He was a prodigy on the guitar. He could play anything on his guitar by the time he was 8 years old.
At least now Mary we can appreciate all that he’s accomplished. 🙂❤️
And he was said to have perfect pitch. I believe he recorded with The Beach Boys when he was a studio musician.

Who but Jimmy Webb could write a simple country song and make it sound like Shakespeare?? This is pure poetry.

Growing up in the 60's and 70"s, I didn't realize how lucky I was. What a great song, great performer, and great person Glen Campbell was.
I hear you loud and clear. We had the best musicians, actors and entertainers in the history of mankind. 😊 1960-1999. We were blessed.❤
@@eddiehaskell5578 Hard getting older, but would never have missed those incredible times of the 60s and yes to about 99.. If I had to pick a single year of the best music, esp American made, I would pick 1969 and 1970. Some of the songs make me sad and nostalgic.
This song still steals my heart every single time I hear it!❤
He really was so very special.
He is truly special ❤❤❤
I am secure in my manhood to allow the tears to flow from my eyes during this absolutely beautiful song...thank you Glen for this...
Ghey.....
Jk 😅
My dad loved Glen Campbell and now I do. This song always makes me think of my dad. Beautiful song x
my Dad also. I miss him a lot sometimes.
This song came on the radio one night when I was up for days plowing snow in a blizzard. I was exhausted having not slept in days. This song really hit home that night.
I know those moments. When you just are worn to hell, and this kind of medicine comes along. pure relief.
Glen was amazing and Jim Webbs writing and composition of that song is off the charts for one of the greatest song ever hands down.
If there is such a thing as perfection in art, this is it.
The guests there realize they're hearing something uniquely beautiful.
Let the emotions roll. This is what happens when a man gets aligned with Devine energy.
One of the most comforting songs of all time. Discovered it via Paul Rudd.
Glen left a hole that will never be filled. Truly missed.
Greatness in the presence of greatness
Kristoferson and Campbell
Kris's reaction when Glen sings "and I need you more than want you and I want you for all time" is priceless. Powerful
There will never be another Glen. Such a talent
one of mankind's most beautiful pieces of music
Absolutely loved Glenn Campbell. An angels voice 😊😊
When some people pass, you realize what the word loss really means. RIP Glen
Glen Campbell was of another level ; watch his peers all great musician's in their own right almost as though they can't believe his God given talent . Such a guitarist that alone blows me away along with his vocals . I never get tired of listening to him . RIP Glen , you made the world a better place .
Exactly, exactly, exactly! You can see it in their eyes and almost brings them to tears or utter amazement.
How about that dude over his shoulder at 1:15 when Glen plays that lick. He's not surprised but still amazed to the point he looks to be laughing a little.
Why is it ever time i watch this i smile like an idiot ...my god this is soooo good .
