  • It's the end of August (already!), and we're discussing the dahlias.
    It has been a TOUGH year for dahlias for everyone, it seems. Every bloom is a victory - nay, a miracle.
    So let's chat about some of my first blooming varieties, how to stake dahlias, some seed varieties, and some surprises that bloomed in the field.
    A note on the battery. Affiliate link below is the closest to what we have. In my husband's words: "it needs to be 12volts because we are using a 12 volt pump. It needs to be deep cycle because deep cycle batteries are meant to be drained and recharged. Normal car batteries have the engine alternator constantly charging them back up, so those won’t work. The last piece is amp hour. The higher the number for amp hour, the longer the pump can run without having to recharge the battery."

    My favourite too is Penhill Dark Watermelon. Looks like a must-have: High Blood Fires. Hi and thanks from Germany. Great presentation.

    Number 1 seed dahlia is my favourite with the touch of pink at back of pedal. Beautiful.

    Do you have a video of your water tank drip irrigation? I have a 1876 farm with only 1 water faucet at the back of the house, and many gardens around the property. I catch rain water from off the buildings into rain barrels, and would love to know how you set up your system.

      Once the weather warms, we’ll definitely do a breakdown on the irrigation!

    Great info...love your style! I'm in my first year in Kansas, we have had a very dry season. With it being my first year I nothing to compare it with, which is a good thing. I did some seed dahlias and most of the plants produced yellow similar to what you showed. Is that the norm? I have a couple of others that I am really loving.

    • @greenbeefloralco
      @greenbeefloralco  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yellow and open-centred are dominant traits for dahlias, which is why whites, closed-centre ball dahlias are so sought after; these traits are recessive (like green eyes and red hair in humans).
      It is very easy to get caught up in comparing year over year. The important thing is to enjoy the process and cherish each bloom.

    I've watched some of your videos and subbed tonight. I live south of you in central NY state. My dahlias are 5-6 1/2 feet this year! I did have to water as it was definitely dryer than last summer. Can I ask how wide your dahlia rows are? I'm going to add a new strip in our yard, 3 feet wide, but not sure if the corraling that wide would work as well? I"m not planning on using the netting. Thanks. I like a bunch of your pink ball dahlias too

    • @greenbeefloralco
      @greenbeefloralco  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jessica,
      Our rows are about 30” wide - give or take 12” on each side of the drip tape. Our beds are 30ft deep, so the rows are approx 30ft long. I do recommend corralling or supporting them in some ways, especially when you have dahlias growing on either side of drip tape like we do, because you’ll risk them flopping into your walking aisles.

    How far apart are your stakes? Not length but width. Thanks for your videos!

    • @greenbeefloralco
      @greenbeefloralco  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We plant 2 rows with drip tape in the centre. The width is about 2ft total. Sometimes 2.5ft depending on variety.

    Bride to be )I think is the white dahlia I have 2 and really looks exactly like that

    • @greenbeefloralco
      @greenbeefloralco  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It definitely cannot be that - I've never purchased that dahlia. It's probably Sandia Showboat (I think Viv Russell is the one with the purple streaks under the petals).
