  • My dahlias are blooming like CRAZY so I thought this was the perfect time to do a tour of my dahlia patch! I have a small cut flower garden where I sell flowers at our local farmer's market in NW Iowa, Zone 5A. Although I was late on planning all of my dahlia tubers this year, I have had great production from them.

    I love single dahlias because they provide a food source for pollinators

    Beautiful! I think I must have that same purple/ pink double from Floret! It’s definitely a winner! The Floret seeds are my first time growing any dahlias and I was pretty happy but like yours mine were mostly singles. Your dark colored dahlias are gorgeous! And good to know that tip that bugs don’t like them as much as light ones. Most of mine happened to be light ones lol🪲🪳

    Wow!! Your dalhias are beautiful. I haven't had great success with dalhias yet, but that's due to being a former plant killer. Hoping to do better this upcoming spring.

      I thought I was doing something very wrong. In early Spring I kept having an issue where all of my Dahlia's would germinate, they would be growing on very well, And then about a week after getting their 1st set of true leaves they would just die out of nowhere. But I believe it was something wrong with the seeds or my cseedling mix because when I started the floret seeds I started over with a brand new batch of selling mix and brand new trays And I didn't have that issue... And I had tried starting over with the other seeds 4 different times and the same thing just kept happening...

    Gorgeous dahlias. Not sure why your Kelvin floodlight is so short. Mine is 5ft tall and was the second to bloom and has been crazy prolific. I’d be a little worried your Kelvin has crown gall disease. Def check your tubers. Thanks for showing your dahlias. Now I want more dahlias haha

      I’m not sure either! But it has bloomed great! Will have to see what the tubers look like when I dig them up

    Loved your tour. The pink one at the end that you called an anemone is actually a collarette, and I would definitely save that one again for next year too. You have some really pretty seedlings in your mixes.

    Lovely blooms! I was very happy with many of my seed dahlias in the garden too! Such color and the bees 🐝 are still loving them.

    Did you ever find the tag for the pink one with the raspberry center? It's killing me! 😅 The picture of it for your thumbnail is so pretty. Thanks for sharing

    You didn't show any staking. I failed staking 101, but I think I learned a lot. How did you keep your bloom stems straight?

    • @SunshineFlora
      @SunshineFlora  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t stake anything this year. I had pretty good luck - I did notice a couple plants such as my cornel bronze that could have used it so will add that next year

    Enjoyed your tour. I am out in the country in southern Wisconsin and appreciate avoiding frost also. We grow over 200 dahlia tubers and are also enjoying the Floret seed dahlias because the bees love them so much.

    Oh my goodness your dahlias are gorgeous! I remember when you planted them and you said you were a bit late. But maybe that's worked out to your advantage at the tail-end of the season. It gives me hope for mine here in NZ - I only have half mine in the ground and because of lockdown I'm still waiting on deliveries of others. I've so enjoyed all your videos this season and look forward to more. You and other viewers might be interested in an English lady who farms flowers in her own landscape (she is a florist as well) - fierceblooms is her YT channel and like you she offers great advice. :)

    I think you got some beautiful dalias from seed! Unfortunately all of my dahlias from seed either rotted in the ground from from like 2 weeks straight of rain, or not very pretty. Of the ones that didn't rot, all I got were a yellow like the yellow you got, & this pretty ugly reddish with yellow center one... It was a fun experiment though! And I definitely think I will grow more dalias from seed in the future but I think that I will Just not allot so much space to them knowing that most of them will be singles... I knew that a lot of them would be singles but I didn't realize it would be like 99% of them! 😒 😂

      @@SunshineFlora , yes that is a very nice one! Is it possibly called Triple Lee Dee? I recently ordered from a company up here in Canada and it’s looks similar to that type… but I could be wrong!

    I did some seed dahlias too and vase life was terrible. The heads were falling off within like 2 days. Then I started putting them in hot water and I got 3-4 more days out of them. I think it also depends on stage of maturity when you cut them too and I cut them early in the morning. It just seems like the hot water made a difference. I didn't do boiling water, but very hot. I still probably wouldn't use them in a bouquet cause like you mentioned, they're shorter too..but not too bad to put a few in a mason jar.

    Love your work! Love your dahlias! May I ask how long they touch the sun everyday? It seems that they are in shade with the high fence? I have a tree in front of my front garden and it gets morning sun but afternoon shade I do not know that if dahlia would grow a lot of flower there.

    • @SunshineFlora
      @SunshineFlora  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They get a solid 8 hours of sun a day in the summer - they are just in shade til mid morning. They grew great!

  • @TVyVan
    @TVyVan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the beautiful garden tour!
    How much sun do your dahlias receive and how do you keep you tubers from rotting? Mine doesn’t do too well in zone 8b with the summer. 😣

    • @SunshineFlora
      @SunshineFlora  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They get shade in the early morning but sun the rest of the day til sunset. Seem to be doing well! I water a few times a week heavily if we do not have rain
