  • August at the Flower Farm means that we're halfway through our growing season. That means it's time to look at some of of our successes and failures on the farm. There's no turning back now and we are past the point of no return (or correction!) when it comes to this year's mistakes or misfortunes.
    We're finally getting into the full harvest season and it is nice to see the fields looking full and productive.
    - About Green Bee Floral Co. -
    We're growing cut flowers on almost 2 acres (split between 3 properties) in rural Southwestern Ontario, Canada in Canadian growing zone 6A. 2022 is our 4th year growing flowers. We sell out of our home studio, at our local farmers' market, and directly to wholesalers + florists. We grow without the use of pesticides and design without plastic flower foam.

    Some people put Irish spring soap to control mosquitoes and various other insects, like spiders and such! Beautiful flower garden. I’m inspired! 💜

    I also planted my white night sunflower very close together this year and love the smaller heads- however the stems are flimsy. They were also shorter this year - some 1-2 feet high only (crazy) slow start to my zinnias and dahlias this season.

    Irish spring soap is used to keep deer away

      Yes, I know that. We don’t personally use it (no deer pressure).
      It turns out it belonged to one of my staff - her mom gave it to her to protect her own gardens. She left it at the studio. I just enjoy posting in some of the quips and quirks of life.

      I appreciate that, but there are definitely lessons and failures in every season - I think this year we learned that there's not enough time for all the ambition. 🤣

    Thanks for the video, I was feeling a little down cuz my plants are behind and felt like I was the only one, so your video came out at the right time. 🙂 my glads are just starting to spike no bug damage so far. You are doing so well considering all your challenges.

      It's just a tough year. This season's challenges are certainly different that lasts. Persevere! Blooms will start soon. :)

      I did some in-depth videos on spring ranunculus that you're welcome to go back and watch. Fall blooms is a trial for us, so I'll definitely keep up with how this goes.

    Question do you have deer fence? Or hoy do you protect the perennials patch?

    • @greenbeefloralco
      @greenbeefloralco  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We only put the deer fence up around tulips. Deer won't really touch delphinium or foxglove or larkspur because they are all toxic. Same with narcissus. Plus, the Olde Drive plot has a working sweet corn field on the other side, so there's constantly tractors hauling and lots of noise to keep them at bay. We don't have a lot of deer pressure at either farm location once tulip season has passed.

    What can you spray the glads with ? And how often ?

    • @greenbeefloralco
      @greenbeefloralco  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We’ll need to use an insecticide next season. Our host farm has their sprayer’s license, so we’ll be chatting with them.
