    Thank you so much for this, I am getting so many ideas from this and it's answering some questions I've been having. Relying on the scarcity of 50 year old VW transmissions is insane and drove me away from buggy building a while ago. Been having the itch and researching a ton out of subaru transmissions

    Good content. Super resourceful that Chevy 1.4 turbo seems like a perfect power plant for this thing pretty excited to see you get it put together.

      Welded up a center diff years ago I would bet the diff breaks before the welds in your coupler .😂ask me how I know . Sti six speed diff will fit with some machining only way to keep these transaxles alive when running 250+ hp

      It will likely be rolled into my buggy series where I am adapting this trans to a gm 1.4 turbo engine. Stay tuned in the next couple weeks

    Great video. Do you know how ground clearance compares to a factory bus transaxle? It seems (by eye) that the outputs are much further away from the input shaft line. Probably not an issue in your case, but wondering about a lowered car/bus. Thanks in advance.

    • @spankranchgarage
      @spankranchgarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a good question and valid point. The diff hangs a little lower on the suby box. On a lowered car/bus the angles will slope upwards a little more than with a VW box. If you are really low you may want to move the trans/engine mounts up a little

      @@spankranchgarage Thank you for the reply. If you ever have one side by side, it would be nice info to have/share.
      On a buggy or sand rail, raising the engine and transmission I imagine would be relatively simple thing to do.
      I can speak for my own car (‘70 bus), raising the transaxle would be major surgery. It’s been done, but complicated. Thanks again.

    How about awd Subaru rail buggy with a h6.

  • @flaircraft
    @flaircraft 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Almost looks like it would be less work to just get a FWD subaru trans. Unless that 4.44 gearset isn't compatible.
    I have a Vanagon 6-rib in my Baja bug, since as you say, finding a Bus 6-rib is getting more expensive every day. I had to make some custom shifter linkage since a Vanagon has a side-shift nosecone. Looks odd but works fine.

    • @spankranchgarage
      @spankranchgarage  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In my area FWD Subaru trans are really rare but I think you’re right it would be much easier. No reason the 4.44 wouldn’t go into one. Knowing what I know now and considering what my buggy turned into…the price of a 6 rib could of been the least of my worries

    Have you heard of Subarugears ? Check them out they have all the parts to do what your doing . But also have reverse ring and pinions for most Subaru transaxles including the auto too !🤙🤷‍♂️Oh and if your not sure of any part your doing they have how
    to videos

    • @spankranchgarage
      @spankranchgarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am aware of them. I decided to shy away from them just for the cost and the challenge to replace if I ever damage their Ring and Pinion. I want to run as much OEM as possible to make replacement cheap and available across the country. Their ratio selection is awesome though and certainty the best option for guys staying rear engine.

    I've got a question for you. People are turning their Subaru manual transmission in a fwd , could you do the same thing with the automatic transmission? If so how?

    • @spankranchgarage
      @spankranchgarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      I havent taken any of the automatics apart before. But if they utilize a similar center differential design I think you could make it work

    • @spankranchgarage
      @spankranchgarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you could weld the spider gears or install an LSD. I haven't looked into it but I would consider the LSD route personally for my buggy

    Is there a way I can use it in my 67 bug rear mounted?

    • @spankranchgarage
      @spankranchgarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can. Just need to buy the ring and pinion from Subaru gears to make it spin backwards

  • @Inlandprowash1
    @Inlandprowash1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you know if there are custom gear options?
    Weddle gears for VW have been crazy hard to get. Manufactured is Australia I believe.

    • @spankranchgarage
      @spankranchgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      SubaruGears in Aus makes flipped ring and pinions for these so you can run rear engine. I don’t know if anyone making a normally cut ring/pinion that is higher than 4.44

    • @Inlandprowash1
      @Inlandprowash1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spankranchgarage I see they have a 4.86 reversed ring gear. With your lower gear stack that 4.86 could be pretty good even for sand with a rear engine set up.

    The front diff will break if your hard on it . The unloading and loading from suspension travel

    • @spankranchgarage
      @spankranchgarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      I plan to be pretty hard on it but hoping keeping the buggy light weight will help it last. When you say front diff, do you mean the actual carrier/pin/spiders or the R/P is prone to fail?

    • @kevlarhorne
      @kevlarhorne ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve seen the spiders break, but most of what I’ve seen has been the ring gear breaking teeth. Like he said it’s the shock loading that will kill it. The problem is that the case is so close to everything when you break a tooth it can get pushed out the side of the case
