Really cool build! I have been around Sandrails my whole life. We have messed around with upside down 6 rib VW to run mid engine Also automatic Audi trans mid engine.
I've now had 2 of these exact same trans setups and blown 2nd gear twice. 1st time was landing a jump WOT (my bad) and the 2nd time was after I cranked up the boost to 17psi, it just couldn't handle that amount of power and sheered all the teeth off. It's a super fun setup though for sure
@@spankranchgarage my pleasure! At least I can use my knowledge elsewhere. Also the complaint about the long dong dip stick...that's from a turbo car. Makes it easier to get to since the top mout intercooler is right over the bell housing
I have considered that and still am. I was thinking the little low range shaft and gears could be a weak point. I also heard the ring gear would need to be machined to clear it all. No deal breakers there but just a few thoughts. If I come across a cheap one I will certainty buy it to play with.
At the 11:00 minute mark, where you can see the large bearing on the left and what looks to be a seal on the right, of the input shaft, is that a seal and bearing or just a seal? My 97 5 speed has axial play on the input shaft and I think it may be a worn bearing front previous owner running it low on gear oil. Awesome brake down by the way, simple set up for measuring the preset backlash with the aluminum block.
It is just a seal up front. There are 2 bearings on the input shaft if I remember correctly. The one on the left that you mentioned and one back towards the diff. The rear bearing has a locating pin that locates it axially if I remember correctly. That bearing is probably worn and the case needs to be split to replace that one
mine is automatic = jdm sti sf5 forester GT turbo - 90,000 km and a rear diff LSD true track 30,000km = both 4.44 = fast off line - just put a EJ207 jdm sti RA Spec c engine = now it is cooking big dollar cars ! = cost $45,000 total .
This is a cool project. Audio advice though: adjust volume of your clips so your voice is at about -10db. When you're talking into the camera it's fine, but gopro on a tripod or whatever you're very low volume👍
Thanks, That was interesting. I've never been into a suby tranny. My Performance VW manual show's a preference for the pattern to be off center near the toe end of the pinion which is what you ended up with. What are you using for a gear marking compound? That stuff worked great!
EZ thanks for watching. I use Richmond gear paste. It’s wicked cheap and works great. You can get it here. www.amazon.com/Richmond-Gear-5500011-Marking-Compound/dp/B000MISKMU/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=10PDPR9EN1EIT&keywords=gear+marking+compound&qid=1658287914&sprefix=gear+matk%2Caps%2C76&sr=8-4
Definitely NOT boring... It's "Must See TV". You're out there living the dream! Thank you for the video. Cheers from So.Ca.USA 3rd House on the Left.
Ive seen lots of transaxles modified, best one yet explained 👌🏾 kudos
Appreciate that!
Love the series, you definitely deserve more views for how much work you put into your videos. Keep up the good work brother
That means a lot thanks!

What an honest straight forward guy, great video!
Thanks!
Amazing! Masterful! Fascinating!
Can’t wait to see this hooked up to a LE2!
Will the buggy rise from the dead?! Can’t wait to find out 🤠
Excellent, informative video. Cheers.

Thats not good to hear! I hope I dont have the weight/traction/power to break it in mine but time will tell
Gotta love the subaru content! The placement of 2nd and 3rd makes total sense why vape boys are blowing out those gears all the time
Thanks for the help with removal of the second trans!

Now I wanna take my Subaru trans apart
New follower highly interested to see this project running ✌️
Stay tuned and thanks for watching
Very very interesting video! Why didn’t you used a low range subaru gearbox?

What does this mean in apple
@@spankranchgarage uhhh. I dunno
Those subaru boxes look simple
Yup. Simple cheap and plentiful
Dang dude you are really mechanically knowledgeable. How did you get comfortable enough to tear into transmissions?
I just take things apart and observe how it works. Most of this stuff came from a junkyard anyway so if I mess it up it’s not the end of the world
Sometimes you’ve gotta go for it with the intention of learning and be willing to mess a few things up in the process!
Great info !!! How do I purchase Spank ranch shirt
Some day they will be available!

0:22 And it came from a turbo car (but that info doesn't come from the TY755VB1AA)
I’m not sure what you mean? www.rallispec.com/downloads/Transmission%20ID%20Chart_Public.pdf
@@spankranchgarage The metal dipsticks (on the transmissions) are only on turbo vehicles. NA vehicles have a shorter yellow plastic dipstick.
Woah
I wonder how hard these are to reverse to rear engine. My bug could use a 5 speed.
There is a kit made by SubaruGears just for this purpose. They make it easy to put in a bug. It is not cheap however
@@spankranchgarage actually that's not bad. Considering how much a built 4 speed costs. And a lot cheaper than the rare Berg 5 speed.
Do you sell these?
I don’t. SubaruGears out of Australia sells most of the parts to do this. They are a little spendy for me so I made them myself
