I don't think the spot that caved in would do that when folded and sat on. That was a very specific pressure point due to trying to bend the hinge the wrong direction. I say it's a pass, especially with all that dirt you threw in there. I'm impressed.
Into that empty area does swell the inside flexible screen, but that's not going to give any more backing to that external half-screen. The phone looks pretty good otherwise, especially the hinge itself, but Motorola could have easily put a thin metal sheet behind the screen there, not lost much space inside for the folding screen, and greatly strengthened that area. It think it would fail pretty much the same when folded if you squeezed on it in the same place.
@@GregConquest I can personally vouch for this happening. I had the phone folded inside of a pocket in the rear waistband of my skirt. It's astonishing to see the efforts and risks Zack puts up in making such a bend test. I mean Zack bending that broken and holed screen again by holding it from there. That's outstanding. Love you Zack.
Are you kidding me? it's impressive to you to press against a partially shattered glass that's still mostly intact and is unlikely to cut? What a risk. That's how far this soy generation got xD
Motorola is a solid brand. The Incredible Droid 2 was perfection for me. My S22 Ultra is rad, but i have also Moto G Series that is a solid backup for that phone, damn impressive when you consider it being 1/6th of the cost. I'm stoked to see them toeing ahead in these types of "real world" tests. They are the OG.
My guess is that void behind the small screen is to accomodate the flexible screen when the phone is closed. As you showed when it is closed there's no gap in the hinge side so they've probably added those spaces to avoid pinching the flexible display when it is closed.
That's a big win. Looks like an easy thing to correct in future iterations, and it is probably unlikely to break with normal use. I really like this phone, especially the outside screen.
Especially when you consider we probably aren't going to be bending the phones backwards. I saw a point made about what if someone sits on it, but I'm sure the pressure from that is much more even plus the phone is closed
6:39 Judging by the size of the void, I don't think it had as much to do with the force of me bending the phone, but more just with *Nothing* being back there. Nothing Phone: Don't look at me, I had nothing to do with this.
You're right, people who use technology less are happier, however, trust me when I say that technology definitely isn't the cause of decreased happiness. The very moment life becomes more pleasurable to me than usual, I immediately get off the screen, so much so that there were even days when I almost completely forgot about the fact that my phone exists. If we want everyone to use technology less, we need to make sure everyone has enough hope to face life and its' difficulties, it would be ideal if life was at least a little easier to handle and contained at least a little more ups than downs. And, quite frankly, you are helping, Jerry, you really are. Keep up the good work, entertainment can turn darkness into brightness for most people.
I just had the same Motorola Razr+ phone crack the same, but it was after dropping it on concrete street when flipped closed. It worked for a few weeks after that drop. But, one day I opened the phone and there was a solid black line across the folding-crease of the phone. The touch screen was negatively impacted and that was the end of the phone's life. 6 months of having a fancy phone. Whoopee. Huge buyers remorse! It currently cost equal or more to repair the phone vs cough-up another $700 on discount day. All knowing the process of damaging it will recur one day. I recommend keeping your mobile phone requirements simple and as cheap as possible. All of them are made to be disposibles in the end.
I think the front screen also broke because of the metal pieces touching at the hinge. My guess is that through bending the phone backwards the metal part got pressed up against the outer screen, creating even more and a different direction of pressure, leading to it cracking under your thumb
he is the reason why flagship lightweight phones have become very rare nowadays, theres absolutely no need to forcefully bend these phones, only an insane person would do that to their phone
@@thewatchmenz I will say, some of the concerns I've seen people post about the fragile nature of folding phones makes me question how some people actually care for their phones. 6:09 Do you think maybe the pressure exerted by your thumb might’ve done the damage there? I agree that this is strange, but I’m trying to take some other factors into account.
I'm not sure how the fact that it depends on inflation and the type of "tier" of phone you buy flies over your head. Most companies have perfectly working beautiful screens and all the works that one would need a phone to do this day and age for sub $200. And if that's not cheap enough there are phones of slightly less quality but still everything you need for $20-100. The $1000 price tag is strictly for the enthusiasts, nobody NEEDS a super expensive flagship phone.
@@qwertypoiuyt1 I know I'm late to say this but same goes for all the other phone brands such as Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo and Oneplus. Their top tier phones still cost $1000+
I'd say it's a pass, even though the outer screen turned into rubble, that screen still worked at the end, all while the inner screen remaining fully functional aside from that burn mark. Considering the normal person isn't going to be intentionally bending the phone in the opposite direction, it seems like it will last quite a bit.🤗 Always loving the videos Zack. Have a great day.
I think it did quite decently. It did good on the dust test , burn test was more than what i think a phone would usually be subjected to and the bend test had interesting results. I personally am a fan of Motorola with my first being the BackFlip which was a an inovation at it's time.
I was listening with my headphones and at 7:01 i got scared.. on the left Headphone it sounds like someone is behind you, but he says with a distorted voice "aren't we all" referring to the phone being a little damaged.
I'd call it a fail considering the small screen can break so easily if force is applied to that weak spot. These flexible screens scratching at a 2 is crazy to me. You have to be absurdly careful with these phones. I generally am, but I like a bit of leeway lol.
How TF is this a fail??? Who on earth is going to be bending a phone backwards???? Nobody. That is the ONLY reason it shattered. Especially since he did another test where the phone was closed and he put pressure on the exact same spot and nothing happened.
i feel like its a pass since it isnt the main screen that died. its still usable even though definitely less so than before. nice to see that motorola upped their game! hopefully the next model doesnt come with empty space inside and then its a really solid foldable.
As somebody who used to repair various phone brands for years, this is not an easy thing to watch. But it`s really great that those butcher tests can help to uncover design flaws. Screen scratch tests are my favorite so far. I would never buy anything that damages that easily.
it seems like the empty space behind the small screen is meant to be a cavity for the inner screen to bend inwards, as you mentioned it creates a tear drop fold when you close it.
For foldable phones, you need to add an extra test. Add like a grain of sand to different parts of the screen (edges, center) and then fold it. See if there's any damage. Then fold again and apply a bit of pressure. This is important because this is something that can happen in real life. Some people even reported damaging their Pixel Fold this way too.
@@Yoon_gibiased Whatever he is putting in, is soft and breaks apart easily. It's more like dust. Sand on the other hand is coarse, rough, and it gets everywhere.
Considering where foldables are right now, I'd consider this a very good pass. It survived that sand torture tha was painful to watch and remained basically functional at the end. Very good pass.
Where foldables are right now ? Samsung's foldable ever since the Fold 3 survived bending and dust 2 years before this Razr, actually be functional almost flawlessly after such abuse, unlike this one which got one screen broken. Also the whole idea of the Razr plus is that you don't need to open the phone as often (to quote Motorola themselves: "If you're gonna open it all the time, you might as well buy a slab phone"), having their outer display, the main selling point, broken from just a finger pressing against them is just hilarous
The first mobile phone only took two weeks of engineering. The first call was by the boss of the company to his competitor, literally the first "First!" ever on a mobile device. But looking back now, people only care who's best
I’m surprised why phone companies don’t hire Zack to show up at their offices with his kit and do a durability test before they are released to the masses. Sounds like the obvious thing to do.
honestly it's usually because they spend millions on R&D and do testing all throughout that phase...also to be fair to companies some of his tests are unrealistic/unreasonable like the flame test (which Zack even admits is just for fun basically)
@@sdrtcacgnrjrc No they dont lol. Imagine putting a solid plastic cavity instead of that hole behind the front glass. Obvious structural design flaw. Im just a software engineer but I do hope any mechanical engineer can understand that.
@@akarshJD This is speculation, but it is important to note that the pressure that broke the glass was applied in a very specific way: a thumb pointing straight into the glass. It looked like if he situated his thumb elsewhere the crack wouldn't happen. Whereas in any other case of normal use, the pressure of perhaps sitting on it would be evenly distributed elsewhere to places with support.
I think all things considered, this was a pass in my book. Yeah, that external screen broke, and yeah, it could have had better reinforcement, but the main screen is my concern and it seemed to do just fine. Still, I'm not jumping on the bandwagon of folding phones just yet, though :)
You need a JRE catch pan. Something like a half of a cookie sheet pan that has your Logo on it... Something that would improve your claen up, safety for the young one's and just something else you can sell H.F. ( local tool stores) sells a little yellow tray that has a corner funnel for sorting things this might be a good example to be able to start with.
in tech we had to actually step back a few times so we can start walking up again.. reffering to features like water resistent (not) and the scratch test etc
That void behind the exterior screen is a bit of a concern, but I'd call this a huge win compared to other folding phones! And the shattered outer screen still mostly works, even with that hole!
Exactly what other folding phones again ? The only foldables aside from Motorola that Zack has tested were from Samsung and Google iirc, and while the Pixel Fold got crushed, Samsung's Z-fold has survived without any outer display breaking since at least the Fold 3
@hoanganphanle Yeah, the Z Flip 3 and 4 did pretty well in his tests too. At least as well as this Moto if not a bit better. The only time I had any serious damage to my Z Flip 4 was when I was unlucky enough for it to slip out of my pocket at just the right angle for the corner of the hinge to hit pavement. I had to get the hinge repaired, but the screen didn't break even with my dad trying to force it to open all the way. That put extra pressure on the screen since it couldn't open the way it was designed to, but it didn't break. The Z Flips are tough for what they are. I just have to make sure it doesn't fall out of my pocket onto concrete. That's my only concern.
Finally another respectable foldable than Samsung, well done, if they will make it even waterproof I consider moving on razr from flip, even if I rlly like the colors and the looks of my flip 3, razr appears to be a bettef fit to my pretentions, of course except the colors and the unexpected flexibility of the smaller screen:))
Id say its a partial pass because while it did break, bith screens still worked and it didnt fold both ways. However, the exterior screen did break but still mostly worked, so its not completely a fail there
Looks like it passed. Still works even with a broken screen and a melted spot on the main screen. Looks like a win of the durability test.

I don't think the spot that caved in would do that when folded and sat on. That was a very specific pressure point due to trying to bend the hinge the wrong direction. I say it's a pass, especially with all that dirt you threw in there. I'm impressed.
I agree with your observation
I have a feeling it can still happen. A weak spot for glass is not negligible.
When I pulled the phone out the outside screen was badly cracked about a finger's-width up from the hinge. I thought maybe the pressure from the pocket zipper pull had pressed against it but it's not possible to have the pull hit the folded phone in the location the crack occurred. There is definitely a give in the glass on the spot where it's cracked so it appears to be a pressure crack. I called Motorola support but without the pricey accident care protection (that I turned down thinking I wouldn't need it and would just pay for a repair caused by a drop) they refuse to help me. Honestly, after the sand test I was already sold. But the fact that the exterior screen broke first is also a plus. With general care I can see this phone lasting a long time before you need another one.
This is an absolute win for Motorola. The hinge is perfect!
I just bought this phone a few days ago and I love it. The charging time is absolutely insane. I walked outside for 5 minutes with a dead battery and it was like 20 percent charged when I came in. I'd give it a 7 out of 10 pass. Both screens still worked and the hinge held up.

My S22 Ultra is rad, but i have also Moto G Series that is a solid backup for that phone, damn impressive when you consider it being 1/6th of the cost.

My guess is that void behind the small screen is to accomodate the flexible screen when the phone is closed. As you showed when it is closed there's no gap in the hinge side so they've probably added those spaces to avoid pinching the flexible display when it is closed.
First time i watched his video. And now i can't stop watching.. became a fan 👌
I don't think I'll be able to sleep at night after watching this
That's a big win.
Im impressed how well the outside screen still worked after shattering.
It helps that the actual screen itself wasn't damaged, only the glass above the bezel.

@@thewatchmenz to say he's the reason goes a bit too far. He's a reason alongside consumers wishing for longer battery life, a more premium feel and more premium materials. Also keeping newer chips cool makes coolers bigger and heavier
I suspect the pressure of the glass edges squeezing it in the reverse bend was what broke the screen. Your thumb went through the just shattered section with a lot of pressure, causing the big dent.

6:09 Do you think maybe the pressure exerted by your thumb might’ve done the damage there? I agree that this is strange, but I’m trying to take some other factors into account.
I like how cell phones went from really expensive to fairly cheap back to being around $1000

Folding phones are starting to come a long way, even with Zacks stress testing 😂
Impressive. I'm considering a flip phone if they keep improving like this!
I think it did quite decently. It did good on the dust test , burn test was more than what i think a phone would usually be subjected to and the bend test had interesting results. I personally am a fan of Motorola with my first being the BackFlip which was a an inovation at it's time.
I literally fell asleep just after waking up while watching this

I'd call it a fail considering the small screen can break so easily if force is applied to that weak spot. These flexible screens scratching at a 2 is crazy to me. You have to be absurdly careful with these phones. I generally am, but I like a bit of leeway lol.
Ahhh yes why don’t you develop folding glass then
How TF is this a fail???

I'm in love with my Razr after 12 years dedication to Samsung. I'm so impressed with the Razr I can hardly express it. Such a fun & functional phone 😊
They made this phone with you mind.
I reckon if he keeps doing these reverse hinge durability tests, someones going to come up with a 180° multi-directional foldable 😊
Zack back with his awesome content, keep doing the awesome work
it seems like the empty space behind the small screen is meant to be a cavity for the inner screen to bend inwards, as you mentioned it creates a tear drop fold when you close it.
The Zack googly eyes selfie … I was not ready. Well played sir.
He is putting sand/dirt in it tho?
@@Yoon_gibiased Whatever he is putting in, is soft and breaks apart easily. It's more like dust. Sand on the other hand is coarse, rough, and it gets everywhere.
@@kuroodo_Okay, Anakin 😜
I like these videos but I always have to skip the razer scratch tests on the side metal. I can physically feel that sound

Never knew Zack is a history buff... Thanks for the Moto history for us who grew up using their tech.
A Simple Google search would give you that information... He was making a video about a Motorola phone so he decided to look up some Motorola facts
The first mobile phone only took two weeks of engineering. The first call was by the boss of the company to his competitor, literally the first "First!" ever on a mobile device. But looking back now, people only care who's best
@@bramweinreder2346 Exactly! I like the competition but Moto is a legacy.

They'd have to go back and start again lol
Pass with caveat I think...
It's a real shame that a cavity causes this though, such an easy thing to fix
I gotta say the fact that the screen shattered and you picked out parts of it and it still works seems kinda impressive
I have one of these and I love it! They spent time to get this done right and it's very good. Don't scratch it with a hardness detector.
I think all things considered, this was a pass in my book. Yeah, that external screen broke, and yeah, it could have had better reinforcement, but the main screen is my concern and it seemed to do just fine. Still, I'm not jumping on the bandwagon of folding phones just yet, though :)

in tech we had to actually step back a few times so we can start walking up again.. reffering to features like water resistent (not) and the scratch test etc
The flip 4 has been the best phone I've ever had but mannnnn this does look soooo pretty!
The one thing i like about flip4 is the case with the ring on the hinge. Haven't found any cases that fit my expectation for razr+
It performed well than other foldables. Both screens didn’t gave up after so much torture.

I also had the 1st ever flip phone Motorola's StarTAC when I was growing up
Id say its a partial pass because while it did break, bith screens still worked and it didnt fold both ways. However, the exterior screen did break but still mostly worked, so its not completely a fail there
