Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is a worthy resurgence for this beloved spinoff series. While the messy narrative pacing and poor framerate bring the adventure down a few notches, the addictive and rewarding gameplay loop with player freedom at its core more than offsets those flaws. You can spend countless hours making your ideal team to your heart's content and engaging with the post-game content after clearing the main story. Further, Dragon Quest IV fans will get more out of this journey than most, but newcomers who exhibit patience can still find themselves invested and enthralled. Ultimately, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince proves that this series can prosper, and with the promise that they'll continue, we're excited to see where it goes from here.

For those struggling to Scout remember that not only statuses can assist, but also buffing your attack/wisdom and lowering the target's will help.
Too bad you can't cheese emotes and tension anymore.
That's a good thing. Only certain monsters used to be useful for recruiting; now they all are
What? Really? Oh wow. I did it the hard way (i.e bought a lot of meat and spammed em.)
If you want the best scouting monster it's that yellow tank slime, you give it three wisdom buffs and bam there you go.
I have put over 40 hours in this game and haven’t played the series since the DS. It’s back and better than ever. Also, the frame rate issue is mainly consistent in the first area. Most of the time I don’t even notice frame dips at all especially once you start unlocking new areas. I loved Pokemon Scarlet/Violet but this game destroys Scarlet/Violet with the amount of content.
Does there is a story or it's more you just need to beat "tournament" ? :)
@@Terranigma23 There are tournaments, and you must compete in them to progress at times, but there's story beyond that, as well. "Win the tournament" is not the main plot like in some entries in the series.
@Terranigma23 I would say tournaments make up less than 10% of gameplay. I usually hate auto battle but AI and insane customization to monster ability and diverse strategy options make them a fun break. I use auto and fast forward battle constantly when leveling up to synthesis better abilities. The game starts off slightly slow but slowly becomes one of the most addicting games. I have full time job and social life and I've put 30 hours since monday. It's Saturday now.
@@Terranigma23tournaments make up 10% of progression but .001% of gameplay. There is goofy fun story that has some dark moments like any great DQ game. If you haven't played DQ4 you still get a lot out of it but way better if you have. You literally play as the boss of DQ4.
Amount of content? Damn thing is as barebones if not worse than SV. Performance isn't any better than SV either. There's several areas with perfomance issues not just the first one. This has been shown and talked by other people too.
Nice review ty. I personally am absolutely loving this game. Its so addictive and fun. The graphics did recieve a major update from the demo for anyone who only played the demo
Thanks
As someone unaffected by most frame rate issues, I'm excited to play this.
Im ok with 30 fps but frame rate issues ain't enjoyable. You're gonna die to to those frame rate issues in some games. We shouldn't settled for that a lower quality product especially when these companies take our money. 😅
@@riotman3579 like I said, it doesn't affect me. An 8/10 is great. I've yet to play a game where the frame rate made it unplayable/not fun. I know those games exist, but this isn't one of those, and they usually get sub 5/10 scores. This is well worth my $60.
Framerate issues in this game are not even that bad lol
How bad are the frame drops compared to Pokémon S/V? That was about the worst ive played on switch
When your tongue hangs out of your mouth like that 24/7 life really sucks.
I still remember Terry’s Wonderland and the one where you play as Tara lol can’t wait to play this one.
Thanks dawg, been waiting a weeeeeeek for this review!
It's very weird that they made this at least temporarily a switch exclusive with such bad frame rate. If you make a game for a platform specifically you should have it running at least OK. It's very bizarre and quite crazy when you consider Xenoblade 3 is on the same platform with no significant FPS issues.
FPS issues are overblown. It's not that bad
Agreed. this is the developers either not caring and making it for a cash grab, or them not allocating enough resources for this game made by a B-team.
This is definitely on my wishlist. It looks fun.
Highly recommend getting physical copy while you can
I want to play this, looks pretty cool. I played dq4 recently as well so it’s fresh in my mind
Im not sure if it was updated but performance is not bad. I felt like 1st time i booted it up it stutter with movement of camera. I either got used to it or it was updated. Its not gamefreaks bad and people should not even compare performance issues to modern pokemon.
i was wondering why the game was struggling to stay stable but i love DQ monster from og to joker
I haven't had frame rate issues personally.
I want a Steam release!
Or PS5 oh well though switch is perfect for this game
In my 20+ hours I have only seen occasional frame drops, but I know others have experienced worse. IMO nowhere near as bad as Pkmn Scarlet/Violet
It's a spin-off, but this game should look at least as good as DQXI.
I like the artstyle better in this one
I just got it. The graphics and coloring are ass
I'm really enjoying this game, but I'm very far disappointed that the music isn't orchestral.
been waiting for this one
This is looking better the more I see from it
Have they patched it in any way?
Amazing entry ❤
It’s such a good game
I wish we could play as rose.
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And Love Dragon Quest Monsters !
Hope this is ported on other platforms.
Like looks good
It definitely won't be. All the DQM games are Nintendo exclusive. Ever since the original gameboy
The game felt very cheap. Gameplay was fun but graphically and in terms of the world design, definitely felt bare and cheap. It got really repetitive too just going to world after world doing the exact same thing. I enjoyed it and played to the final boss but it was not incredible.
I’m driving myself crazy trying to pick one. On one hand I love Dragon Quest and enjoyed the Demo for Monsters. On the other hand I loved Pokémon Sword/Shield, Pokémon Arceus. I know I love Pokémon in general and it’s the devil I know but I also love the thought of enjoying a new story for Dragon Quest. Either one would be strictly solo, I would be getting the DLC for whichever is chosen but just I can’t choose.
I will never get used to reading Defence with c
looks like a lot of work honestly, impressive amount of monsters but min max options with all those fusions look like a butt load of work, thanks for showing
for anyone worried about frame rate and technical issues. PLAY ON HAND HELD ITS WAY BETTER AND WORTH PLAYING THIS GAME
Hope this comes to pc one day. Bc I'm not giving money to Nintendo
Ok, clown. Have fun waiting in the meanwhile the rest of us enjoys this game and 100s of other exclusives on the leading system of this generation by a company which defined the industry. :)
I'm down for this type of game but the visuals and performance turned me off
First third of the game not difficult- that’s just because you probably grinded alot. If you avoid battles and don’t grind, boss fights are way more difficult. You choose your difficulty.
Also the DLC simply unlocks Easy Mode. If you want a challenge, don't use it
Just like with Treasures, another DQ title that was made unnecessarily exclusive and struggles with performance due to the switch's subpar and low quality hardware so we'll have to wait until the proper PC release
False, it's suffers because Square Enix didn't optimize it. Other games run flawlessly on Switch
@@SlimeBlueMScorrect.
5:37 except the gameplay loop DOES get old. The overworld is rather barren and synthesizing is kind of frustrating when there are no official guides.
I disagree, the areas are pretty full of life and synthing never gets old
There is a guide....it's just In Japanese I used it to get the S and X ranks on my team
"Barren" world.
The game has toogles in the game to look at fusion recipes if you've seen the monster once.
Feels like you didn't play it tbh.
Still miles better than Scarlet and Violet performance wise. Gamefreak is the worst developer on the scene, to be honest. They need to pass the baton to someone else already.
The game is censored and the framerate chugs. It's a shame I've got to pass on my favorite monster collection series.
Framerate doesn't chug, lol. You're missing out on the best DQM game ever released
Censored? The heck?
Framerate was a issue in opening area. It may have been updated or the areas afterwards were much better. 1st area was jarring when I moved camera. Haven't noticed it since. Maybe I got more used to it but performance is infinitly better than modern pokemon and game is addicting asf. Starts slow but has become my fav moster collecting game.
They put spats and a modesty shirt on Maya.@@dynastygirl2912
I can't get over how so many modern games look so lifeless and sterile. Seriously, even some PS1 games had better lighting work than this. These modern games completely lack any hard contrasts, they look like they were made from cheap plastic.
I wanted to love the game. Had it preordered and played the demo. the frame rate drops sub 30 a lot of the time. This is unacceptable for a full price game under the Dragon Quest IP. There are indie games that look and run better, and they go for a more reasonable price. I really wanted to support the game with my money, but I chose not to for now and wait for a sale, because if I support this now, the company will think its ok to release an un-optimized game and ask for full price. To note, I have played the Dragon Quest Monsters Joker series. I really wanted this to be the game that puts Pokemon to shame.... its sad that both game looks and runs soo poorly. All I ask for is a stable 30fps.. I would not support this game till they release patch that fixes the core performance issue.
It really isn't that bad after the 1st area and not sure if thats because of update or they just dumb and want to leave the worst impression. It's by far my fav monster collecting game and by far most addicting DQ game. Your missing out but I'm more of gameplay guy over graphics/performance especially with this type of game. The performance is infinitly better than modern pokemon.
Square Enix doesn't need your fucking money hahaaaa
@@dank2171 hey thanks for the reply.
I'm just getting the game later when it goes on sale. I just don't think its worth the price its asking for in the state its in, and I'm a big DQM fan as well.
Dude don’t spoil the story without a warning
Framerste isn't nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. It's hardly even a distraction
That doesn't excuse it. They choose to put the game on the Switch and couldn't get to run at a consistently stable framerate. It's lazy. Plenty of more powerful games run without issues

@@playerslayer888it’s cool man the people that don’t care get to play and you don’t
@@callamburles3075 I will play it, just not at full price. Every reviewer so far has mentioned that the game is really good, and I am not disagreeing. Most reviewers have also brought up the frame rate as an issue that needs to be addressed, and it is distracting... the game is good even thought it has frame rate issues, but it could be better without it. Just look at how good the DQ XI switch port to see what effort put into the game actually looks like. To blatantly disregard the the frame rate issue and say its not bad would hurt some consumers in the short run, and hurt the actual DQM fans in the long run. You are absolutely correct with your reply; people can still buy the game with the knowledge of the frame rate and still be able enjoy the game.
So it is a distraction 😂 keep coping 😂
Not enough monsters
500 monsters. Which is more than modern Pokemon in their base games lol.
They LITERALLY just copy/pasted all the enemy 3d character models straight from DQ11.
id buy for playstation. switch sucks
It’s the best console for JRPGs
One moment of silence for all those, who can´t afford all systems :)
Honestly everybody is praising this game an I find it very repetitive. The storyline is skip able, and the same rinse an repeat sound track from the early 90's.
Back on Gameboy advance there was NPC's you can fight and steal there monsters and the storyline was more intriguing. Exploring is trash, nothing worthwhile to find. If you haven't got this yet, wait for a sale.
You absolutely shit on Infinity Strash for the same reasons you overlook here.
Story that tries to be newcomer friendly and recap old stuff simultaneously? Check
Poor framerates? Actually, only a check for this game. Infinity strash contrary to what you said is fine.
And then addictive gameplay as a positive?
Well check for both, but you say infinity strash is not.
The frame rate in this game is HORRIBLE, the walking animation is stiff AF.
Still wondering who was on the team for infinity strash that pissed you off, because that review, and then this one, make zero sense in comparison.
