  • When you're doing your roof, do you put the ice and water under or over the edge metal, and why?

Apron down then I&W is what Malarkey specifies. Drip edges go over the underlayment. On another topic, on a roof section between two hips, do you do anything special when starting the step pattern? I saw one video that showed drawing a vertical line in the middle of the section and then working out both ways from there, which I didn't understand why that would be needed.

Great video! Miss your weekly educational videos. I'm sure you are busy. But love the 4-5 minute videos. I learn a ton from your videos.

Hi Brain! Love your show! Watched lots of your videos and in the last two days I went up and fixed a long time leak near the chimney of my house. It's not a small job because I ended up fixing a softy roof ridge as well which turned out to be broken board likely some heavy guy stepped on it some time ago. Last night we had some rain in the area and this morning I checked: no more leaking! 🙂

What brand of cap nails do you use? I want a metal nail (not aluminum) so I can use a magnetic hammer.

Ice & water shield always goes OVER the metal drip-edge. I've never seen anybody up in UP of MI run ice & water down the fascia board. That would look weird.

Texas here - on my original roof, tar paper was tucked under the metal - sure enough, I got rotted boards near the eaves due leaks above the area.

We do i&w first overhang the fascia then drip then another line of 9" wide piece of i&w. But I totally agree with your knowledge!

What the roofer should be doing is installing the self adhering underlayment first, then the drip edge and then flashing tape to seal the drip edge to the underlayment.

If replacing the gutters, I like to lap the ice and water onto the facia a bit. If the gutters stay, I was taught to lap the ice and water over the gutter

I think if I have to reroof, I'll pay for them to do it both under and over.

I completely blame these ridiculous spiked on gutters. Ancient technology!

Strange that there's disagreement over which method. You'd figure this would be settled science by now.

IMO if you are making such a hard bend with the IWS over the fascia, I might guess it would crack on that line pretty quick and fail to serve its purpose.

What your thoughts on nails being placed to close the bottom edge of the shingle, allowing water to wick up underneath and rusting the nails out.
