ICE AND WATER SHIELD INSTALLATION TRICKS

  • One person can install long lengths of ice and water shield to the roof, however it is easier for two people to install, especially with some new installation tricks. Remember that in high temperatures and direct sunlight the self adhering membrane begins sticking immediately. However, with a little practice even installing under these conditions you'll find that these tips will make it easier.

    I miss doing roofing. From age 12 dad trained me flat roof and I roofed for a few decades off and on. I learned sloped roofing as well , many thousands of square feet , millions probably. I'm too heavy now at 50 I cant jump around on sloped roofs. Or be up ladders at nearly 300 pounds I am now. I miss roofing. My son is a red seal roofer now and I am dream of the day I'm more in shape to work with him on some flat roofing. I love roofing. It's in our blood. My dad would be proud of my boy , roofing keeps you strong. I changed careers when my discs started act up. Thanks for share. You guys are do great work. Work with pride and quality materials. Great job guys

    I worked for a roofing contractor almost 30 years ago. We used Grace Ice and Water Shield. Just recently did a small roof for a friend using all GAF products. The ice and water shield from them was so much more forgiving then I remember the Grace to be. Once the Grace hit the deck without backing, that was it.

    Excellent detail along the dormer wall flashing (it was the incorrect flashing) installed by the builder, but it can be corrected w/o having to dig into the stucco, using the exact method you described.
    Details, it's all about the details when flashing all penetrations on the roof, there is no one size fits all, each penetration can be unique depending on multiple factors, take your time, use the correct flashing products for each one, and install them correctly.
    It only takes a little extra time and little more money/products to do it right.
    That roof will not leak.

    Grace Ice and Water has a paper back and it sticks like crazy. If you let that paper tear you are in trouble as you get one chance to stick it, no do overs. It doesn't require or need tacks. You set the beginning and you better be right if you are running a sixty foot roll. The nice thing is it sticks better than any I have seen in forty degree weather or even a bit lower.

    Right over the OSB? Will that come up in 25 years for replacement? Did they really need to stapple? The staples are just to hold it in place during installation?
    I'd like to use this in a low slope flat single pitch roof in Florida (no Snow).

    • @Josh-ww5kz
      @Josh-ww5kz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes it works best when it's right over the osb sheeting. Yes you should use some type of faster to hold it down unless its a super hot day out and it's already sticking to the roof when you start, but it doesn't hurt to add staples/nails either way. One thing to add is if it's super hot out and you step on the top quarter of the i&w without some sort of fastener, it may start to slide out if you stand in that spot for more than a few seconds. So staples help with that issue.
      If your roof is less than a 4/12 you should be looking at some sort of single ply/2 ply torch on roofing system. You shouldn't put shingles on a roof lesser than a 4/12 pitch, especially in flordia

    • @TestElepine
      @TestElepine 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's going to depend on the suppliers that are available in your region also most company's won't warranty the product if the underlayment comes from a different company for example here we have iko and BP products if I install BP shingles the underlayment must also be from BP or they can viod the warranty.. tbh getting any company to pay out on that warranty is next to impossible they will always blame it on workmanship but that's usually how it goes. Just don't be a pennie pincher, not saying to buy the most expensive product but you pay for what you get so lol

    • @Josh-ww5kz
      @Josh-ww5kz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just do the same as displayed in the video when doing the layer by the eaves, but when you take the bottom plastic off, fold the lower half of the i &W towards the top, so it folds above and lays on the top part, pull it high enough so you can barely see the black underside of the top section of i&w and then peel the plastic off carefully. Try not to let it fold in on itself. Then from one side edge, slowly push the folded half down and gravity should cause it to unfold itself, you might just have to push it down a few times where it gets stuck.
      Also make sure to staple the top section before doing this by yourself.

    I understand that it cannot have any wrinkles because then it would allow water to pass under membrane. That the membrane depends on full contact for a water seal. So installation must be perfect of there is no warranty. Is that correct?

    • @Josh-ww5kz
      @Josh-ww5kz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you happen to spot a wrinkle after you already got the ice and water on, just push it down and it will be fine. If it's a bigger wrinkle, make a small cut into it horizontally and let the excess (the wrinkle will make some excess) lay overtop of the i&w next to the cut. Once heat gets to it, it will seal it around the protrusion.

      Roofing contractor in Oregon here. Being costly would be about the only downside to ice and water on the entire roof surface. If you are in an area that experiences a lot of snow, I'd say go for it if you arent too concerned on the price. If you are in an area that doesnt experience a ton of snow, then Id recommend doing the entire outside perimeter then doing the rest with a hybrid synthetic underlayment, such as Safeguard 30 Hybrid synthetic underlayment. Let me know if you have anymore questions, happy to help.

      Synthetic underlayment or felt paper is installed on the balance of the roof surface where the IWS is not installed, however some building codes require synthetic to be installed over the IWS. While working in the Denver metro area and in the foot hills we have over 20 governing jurisdictions for building codes. Once you start working in Summit county the codes change drastically.
      If you work in Florida and in Miami Dade County the codes will be different. Be sure to install IWS and underlayment over local building codes.

    What brand of ice shield is that ? I like the granules for traction and also the shingles won’t stick to it. We’re having a lot of problems ripping shingles off that were done with ice shield. Almost have to take the plywood off to do it right.

    If you don't put underlayment on TOP of the ice and water and under the shingles and instead put the shingles directly down on the I&W shield you will not be able to remove shingles for replacement to fix a leaky or damaged roof. And you may end up having to rip off the old shingles complete with the plywood sheathing for the next roof at a large cost for a completely new plywood sheathing to put the next roof on.

    • @Jimmy_Cavallo

    • @alistairclark6814
      @alistairclark6814 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jimmy_Cavallo It's a tar product. It will bond to whatever roofing product you put on top when it heats up on hot days. A layer of tar paper between the ice shield and roofing will make your roof maintainable with minimal cost and effort.

      You have to have roof vents (those that go on top point/crest of the roof and soffit vents. Cut holes in the soffits (under the edges of the roof) and put metal or plastic vents. Those and turbines release the heat and moisture.

    • @samueladams4145
      @samueladams4145 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Texas is correct. I recommend continuous ridge vent with the roof deck removed 1 1/2" down from the peak on both sides, and a continuous vented soffit on both sides of the building. (No end louvers if you follow this process)

      Not all roof assemblies need to breath. Depends on your particular type. Cathedral, conditioned attic, unconditioned attic. etc.

      Excellent response. I have sold metal roofing jobs over open purlins in Kentucky with a heated office inside the building, and as long they followed the advice you have given, still NOT have a condensation problem inside the building. Imo, Good ventilation is a key to roof longevity.

    Tuck that ice behind gutter, over the facia. Than slap the drip up , starter strip and shingle.
    If people let gutters get clogged up it prevents ice and water from rotting your facia and backing up over top plate or roof deck.

    Ice and watershield is good but it's not bulletproof, I've had to do repairs on roofs with ice and water installed more than a few times. And if you know how to install flashing correctly, you don't need it around chimneys and walls. I know it's a good barrier but def not a necessity.
