As a retired roofing contractor when the roof was first shown the first thing that came to my mind because it was an open area was nail pop. Good video. I used to volunteer and do bi-annual inspections of a little old lady in my church and fix problem areas. She didn't have any money so after fixing about 20 nail pops over a 2 year period I got some guys in the church to pitch in and we roofed it for her for free.
That's a nice church you all go to. No way you could knock on doors and get a set of neighbors to do that. I'm picturing a little old lady smiling after her new roof was installed. I bet she was thankful each time you came out too. Makes me want to return to church and see what it's like there. It was just like you mentioned and probably still is.
@@willoughby1888 In this day and age, some of the best people are found in church. Yes there will be some hypocrites' but many good people. Plus the Lord wants us to take care of the elderly.

Last few times I went they had loud youthful music and nobody could head each other. Even S.A. was like that. The other churches I belonged to got sold and I ended up moving.
Nice. I am an Atheist, and I help people. Not all good people go to church. But for some reason church gives people a reason to be nice. When you do not need a reason to be nice. Just be nice because it feels good to help those of us who are in need.
I'm a young carpenter just getting into it and just did my first roof recently. Your videos were immensely helpful, passed final inspection from the city with flying colors. Love your videos, they're very helpful for young people like me just getting into the trades.
I had 8 inches of rain fall within hrs and noticed small leaks in attic. Went to roof and saw no visible areas of damage. Now I know what to look for. thanks!!!
I'm a roofer and I agree that most roofing companies hire sales people that call themselves roofers but they don't even know how to install a basic shingles. Most storm chasing companies are that way! I've had so many clients get their roof misdiagnosed from major roofing companies and they were charged out of the wazoo. It's really sad that there are some terrible companies that have no clue what they are doing.

The problem is that it doesn’t matter if I know, the work still needs to be done and if I can’t find someone who won’t rip me off I either just have to pay them to swindle me or figure out how to do the job myself. You are honest and have integrity. Thank you for showing us how repairs should be done to save everyone money i.e. less insurance claims that are actually repairabvle. It is tempting to claim complete loss to get a "free" roof replacement but insurance is to cover loss not what fraudsters try to get from it.

Also when nails pull up which is due to poor ventilation, if the roof isn’t ventilated correctly, the humid air builds up and literally pushes the plywood upward, then when the pressure decreases due to weather, the roof settles back down leaving the nail up and it pushes through the shingle causing a nail pop. This also happens to sheet rock inside your walls, due to the same issue.

I always use Lapping Tar to seal old Roofing Tacks that pushed through shingles and run a layer under shingles that I lifted up--this makes Shingles Seal back Down--you can put a few bricks over the shingles to hold them down properly...

Framing/roofing sub 30+ here, great job! Correct about the "brittle" test too-ANY shingle roof can be repaired, anytime. I'd hire u in a heart beat young man. (I probably would have pulled the nail and replaced w/new straight driven nail but as u said, freebee)
I am a female,and have always been handyvand dont like paying money to a tradesman to do a job i think i could possibly do myself and save tons of money. This content is easier to watch than some. I just find alot of videos are not straight forward and to the point and this guy is. I fontchave alot of time because winter is getting ready to set in. I recently rented this oversized garage to have my art,crafts,and work studio and i was really super excited to get moved in but after a few conversations with the landlord (which was not really t h e landlord landlord because he was subletting the garage space that was a detached garage) he pretty much admitted to me (in writing,who does that) that he knew the roof leaked before i moved in ,but i spent over $2000 to move in and after i told him i was not going to pay the original amount for rent and that i would pay $500 a month and find out about the leaks and such and i would continue to pay that until the problem is sorted out. Now i have decided i am going to fix the roof and not tell him so i can continue paying $500 a month 😂

Good stuff.. there are always consequences for taking shortcuts or trying to be the fastest roofer alive!!! Most young roofers know what not to do, but the stress of being too slow and testosterone of being the bad ass makes the repair guy the hero! There is a fine medium where quality meets quantity and everyone is happy!
Easy job! ALL the leaks I had were totally INVISIBLE. All the roofers want to re-roof the whole area at $2500. Also mine not a gravy job like this one in the video! My roof is at a 45 degree slope!
Look in the attic and pop the offending nail up from inside instead of digging away at sealed shingles, the full tab or laminate shingles usually seal well and are prone to damage when trying to remove or search seams for nails too close to them. There’s about a 3 inch wide area that water penetrates under every seam and valley it’s the reason tar lines aren’t supposed to be a solid strip and should have spaces to let water run out. Same with the metal steps nails should be on the outer edge of the step if they can’t be fastened flatly to the wall a lot of guys nail too close to the bend on those step flashings.
He got lucky finding that because it was a high nail usually you won’t be able to easily identify the exact seam with a close nail that rusts and lets water in
Back in the day I had a real problem with Holmes on homes knocking winter installs but he wasn’t wrong about the tendency of installers not caring as much when it’s cold and windy. These close to seam nails are the main reason why newer roofs need to be redone despite some serious issues with tar sealants failing. Poor quality installs by workers who aren’t explained the subtle nuances of why everything needs to be done certain ways hurt the entire industry. Not saying all roofers should be licensed but maybe the bosses and crew leaders should.
How does this work when its like 40 degrees or less outside? You can still do this repair? How do you know that the leak isn't originating much further away and running down the home framing and dropping the water further away from the actual leak? My experience as a home owner who has had leaks tells me that it's not usually so cut and dry. Good video. 👍

Super helpful thanks! Would you feel comfortable going over the shingle vertical seam without lifting them up? My roof job is S-job and i am finding a lot of nails very close to the seam with improper overlap......some are litteraly between shingle butts omfg
I've stuck a piece of random shingle underneath the damaged part of the shingle and glued it in. It has to be a thin piece of shingle so it doesn't stick up too much. Sloppy nailing causes a lot of problems.

A nail punch might help? i forget name of the tool, but its basically a bigger nail punch with a bigger head. its basically a steal bar. itd probably be great for that.

Feeling gourmet, add some dried Dill weed. If you’re a witch, you will want too.
Is the Goecell that much better than like Henries wet patch. I have a bunch of shingles to do this on cause the nails on my eaves are short (presumably to avoid penetration) and aren't sealing. I already bought the wet patch, should I ditch it and get the Geocell?

You can also use prybar on top of nail then hammer on pry areas. If you run into one or two nails more than likely there will be more.

PacTool RS501 Roof Snake Tool or smilar to avoid prying worn shingles up too high for the hammer to get at it. A life saver.

if the angle for the hammer itself is too steep when hammering the nail tight to the roof, you can use a pin punch with the hammer.

Yes, they are not bendable ice-cold, so pick a warmer day. or bring a heat source with you.
Next time spot blow the dust & dirt before you apply the caulk for better adhering. Otherwise Great Video young man.

I think the sheathing was damp during installation, that’s what caused nail to pop.
Plain old silicone works just fine for reseal.
