I have also a EOS R for more than two years. And now just have the new R3. The autofocus ability with R3 is a huge huge update, it's amazing specially for shooting motorsports and animals, like my cats and dog😁 EOS R can't catch them😄 And I'm happy that the R3 doesn't have 40 megapixels, because otherwise the card will get full very fast, and cost a lots more hard drives... It's make the life easier with not more than 30 megapixels.
About three years ago , I went from the 6D to the EOS R. The 6D was a great camera and took amazing photos. The EOs R takes amazing photos ! For what I shoot ,this camera is more than adequate. I would like to have R6 MK II or the R6 and yes the R5 but not to take better photos or make me a better photographer but just to say ,I have an R5 !
@@raylander6329 Think they'll do that? I kinda got the feeling they were done with the R because it had too much of some things that they spread among the other models.
I’m a Canon EOS R owner myself. I primarily shoot portraits and street photography. It’s a work horse camera. I use the RF 35mm macro along with the RF 85mm 2.0 primes and I’m happy. You brought up a word “Lust” over all these new body cameras canon comes out with shortly after dropping previous ones, that’s the problem with people they think your being “Cheap” or they feel cheap when in reality it’s for what you do as a photographer. Now if your a wedding photographer i highly recommend a Duel SD card slot with the R5/6 and on. It’s easy to see all these fancy camera body’s and think your getting left behind and your not getting that quality. EOS R is amazing and i just plan on investing in RF glass moving forward because that’s what’s going to make you stand out. Great video!
Sir, I'm in the market to upgrade but I'm on a budget. Your video help me tremendously. I been looking at the EOS R vs 6R and what your video did was to bring me "back down to earth" My wife and I travel a lot so, Landscape shooting is what I'm going for. Because of your " common sense " video I'm going with the " R ". Thanks
I recently purchased the R (my first mirrorless as well). I was tempted to get the R3 or R6 due to the dual slots but financially just could not so this is my happy medium. Glad to hear a professional is happy with this because I am a newbie & looking to learn more about becoming a professional photographer. Loving your content so far. Thank you for taking the time to share
Dual slots are a big deal for something like wedding photography, but actually I just shot a wedding last night and split my time between my new R and my old Mark 3 so I had the best of both worlds... there's always a way!
@@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk My wife did her first wedding last week with the Canon 6d Mark ii. For her backup she hired one of her smart high school students who has an old Nikon. Yep.... there's always a way.... ha ha! Cheers from South Africa.....
Wow you really opened my eyes on this topic. I used to shoot weddings and portraits and I went to school for digital photography where we learned with a 5D MK 3 and for the longest time after I graduated nothing felt good enough for me besides that camera and because I yearned for the MK 4. After taking a hiatus from photography (because doing my hobby as a job wore me out mentally and pushed me away), I’ve had a yearning to take my hobby back again shooting landscapes. So I’m on the hunt for a new camera and I want to get into the mirrorless world. The R appealed to me instantly so I’ve been budgeting for one, until the R5 & R6 came out. 🤦🏻♀️ Now I’m going crazy trying to convince myself that I’ll be fine with the R. Your video confirmed that for me. I was focusing on want over need. So thank you for this video!
So glad to hear it! Yes, dual cards are very important for events like weddings, but I have no difficulty running the R as my main camera for my portrait business... I still think the R is an anomaly in its features because it was Canon's first, that they will work quickly to eliminate LOL. Meanwhile, my Mk 3 and my R are a really great combo... thanks for watching!
I really enjoy your channel. You seem to be just a real down to earth guy, very sensible and easy to listen to. Your video helped me cement my choice a lot easier. Iooked at many more expensive cameras, which I'm sure were nice, but at the end of the day they really weren't in my budget. The Canon R seems like exactly what I need and what I can afford. I expect it to be the camera I use for a very long time.
One of the best vlog I’ve seen in a while. You spoke the truth and you were honest. I like that a lot. I totally agree with you, that physic’s makes more sense than technology. Well done!👍
I recently came back to the EOS R and I agree its a great camera one of my most favorite camera’s that I’ve ever used. I enjoyed the video some great points and it was nice to see a positive perspective for this camera. So many people want to focus on what it doesn’t have instead of appreciating what the R does well which in my opinion is a lot. Great stuff sir looking forward to more videos from you.
Thanks for watching! I have found that in many videos negative points are made to generate drama and views ... Lots of great gear out there that isn't always the 'top of the line'
Your purposes, your needs, your considerations are all identical to me. Although, I feel I can always use more resolution. I also believe in having redundant cameras. Having a less capable "backup" camera is like having a compact spare tire: You can just limp along until you get your primary repaired or replace. Instead, I prefer three identical bodies, which I rotate in use. I generally take two bodies to a job, the third becoming the second body if one is in the shop. I was still using 5DII cameras, so I needed a full set of replacements. If I were to purchase three EOS R5 bodies, that would be over $10,000. Three EOS R bodies cost me less than $5,000. The EOS R5 is certain superior in capabilities, but none of them would make me a dime more money in the portraiture I do.
Your last sentence: "...but none of them would make me a dime more money in the portraiture I do." is the whole show from a business perspective. Thanks for watching!
It's nice to hear from a practical point of view. I have a EOS R and love it, I use to shoot using a RB67 and a Kowa super 66. I printed in a dark room and now using a printer. Love the technology , I never had dual film LOL. Great vid!!
THAT is a really good point! I joke today about the tension of shooting a WEDDING on film and laughing about the uncertainty of waiting on the lab - we have it SOOO much easier today
I just move from my 5D MKIII to Canon R with the similar reasons. Big change after 10 years and all in positive way. I'm happy with the choice I made too, R6 with lower megapixels and price was not an option and R5 way overpriced. Regards!
IBIS (In-body image stabilization), as well as a firmware update removing the 29:59 video recording time limit, would make the R perfect. Since we can't do anything about IBIS, I'd me more than satisfied with the firmware update.
29:59 video recording time limit has tax reasons. Gadgets which can record longer than 30 minutes have to be taxed as video recorder devices. "For years, companies have been able to avoid this tax because the EU considers photography cameras “information technology products”. Video cameras/camcorders, however, took on the tax because of their ability to record things like television shows and movies, theoretically causing competition for cable companies."
@@__Mr.White__ The EU tariff you refer to was lifted as of Jan 1, 2019. There is no more tariff. Therefore, Canon (and Sony, Nikon, etc) should really do their customers a service and release a firmware update that will remove the 29:59 video recording time limit from cameras that came out before Jan 1, 2019 - especially cameras like the EOS R and Sony A7 III.
Watching this video was like confirmation bias for me. 😅 I'm finally upgrading my 5D MKIII. I scored one that was special ordered back in 2018, by a customer at one of my local camera store. It only cost me 1,170 USD!!! My reasoning for switching was purely due to video clients. Everything that you listed as reasons for an upgrade are just big bonuses for me ( I am quite excited about the autofocus), but I really needed the video specs. 4k, C-Log, slow motion at 1080p, dynamic range boost and the option to output 10bit are HUGE upgrades for me. Shooting weddings with just big CF cards never made me nervous. If I land a couple more commercial clients this year, I might get an R5C. The reality is, this camera may be fine for a few years, allowing me to pick up a new ultra wide lens and update my quadcopter, at 75% the cost of an R5C. Thanks for sharing your experience. If nothing else it made me feel more comfortable with my decision. Cheers!
the skin colors are a bit toward the green side on the R ......I went back to my Eos 1DS Mark III with 21mp and for weddings and video I use a Canon 1DX MKiii .... on the Canon 1DS MKiii the skin colors and skin textures are amazing for photographing people and animals, and for printing large....It's not the quantity of pixels, but the quality of the pixel.
Thanks for the great review, it was very helpful. I am upgrading from a 500D, and while my glass collection isn't very large, I'd really like to move forward with the same platform and avoid starting over with more money. I've been told to skip to EOS R, but it seems like a significant upgrade for a hobbyist like myself.
Honestly I came from Nikon DSLRs and the Canon RP gives me what I need for me to do my job. Not too huge of a megapixel count, prints turn out great and gives me tools I never knew could help me until I played with it. Don’t need the best of the best in specs you just need the best to do the job you put in front of it.
Great feedback from one professional to another. I'm using both mirrorless and DSLRs still. I just love that 50 megapixels when I can crop in some. No longer shooting commercially, I'll probably retain the R and get another, will see what the market demands, Keep up the great work.
You Sir, don't know how much I love this video. It's so epic, and surreal. I love what you do with your painted type portraits! Your the only one who mentions the sweet spot of having 30 mp's. My wife and I were debating on either the Canon R 6 Mark ii or the R, and we decided on the R.... and your video had a lot to do with that! It's actually being delivered this week. Concerning the R 6 Mark ii, why spend so much and get only 24 mp? Who needs fancy video features if your mainly taking pictures and 30mp's will help to make our pictures stand out!!! Needless to say I decided to subscribe. Keep that humble down home feel... with a touch of class.... it's magic. God bless, and who knows.... maybe one day I'll get to have a cup of coffee with you... ha ha. You never know......
@@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk I was on a downloading spree one day and downloaded all kinds of videos about the R.... not commenting on most. I do remember commenting some here though, but I didn't subscribe. When I watched your video again on my big TV using my usb.... I said to myself... I got to find that guys channel and subscribe to him! There was one point where you say coffee and photography... I think it was on your cup, so I hunted you down today using that phrase - ha ha. You might want to make a sign etc for the ending of your videos that says your channel name really clearly. I'm going to go see what else you have for us to watch. See Ya..... as Jared would say.... ha ha!
You did an excellent job of explaining why the Canon EOS R is such a great camera. I'm also a professional photographer who specializes in shooting people (portraits, models, gr. seniors, etc.) and I love the R for all of that. I used to shoot weddings; I no longer do so the one card slot is of no consequence to me. Actually, when I shot weddings, I shot with an EOS 20D, 30D and 40D, finally moving to the 7D and EOS 5DMK II. I shot a couple hundred weddings or more and never had a problem with the one card slot all these cameras have. In fact, I've never shot a wedding with a camera that has two card slots. Prior to the R I shot with (and still do) the Canon MK IV, which produces excellent results. I'm not a gear head, I also print my photos for clients and believe the true test of a photographer, camera and lens is a print not an Instagram backlit image. And let's face it, if you print on canvas, a large print is very forgiving if the focus is a bit off. The unwritten rule was/is if it's kind of out of focus print it on canvas and if the color is really bad turn it into a black and white image. Lots of ways to get a great image. If you're an aspiring photographer who wants to do it professionally the EOS R is, for now, all the camera you're going to need.
Man..... how I love your comment here! My wife did her first wedding last week. I'll be sure to pass on to her what you said here. I also like what you said about Canvas prints and black and whites. You should have your own TH-cam channel...lol.
Agree 100%! I've been a professional photographer for almost 41 years now. I went from the Canon 6D to the Canon R6, WOW! I made the jump because of the same basic reasons you listed. I don't buy cameras as a hobby, has to make a profit! Obviously the 6D was 12+ years old, still worked great, but that focus!! Don't need 45 mp, just too big of a file too much storage space etc..Great video!
One use case I could see for picking the R over the R5 is if you wanted to invest in better glass. But I would think that props would appreciate better AF, dual card slots, and IBIS (though, perhaps not as critical for studio portrays where tripod/lighting can help mitigate/eliminate camera shake).
This is such a no-nonsense video. As a hobbyist, I need to replace my 1DS Mark III (RIP) All the points you express make sense to me. I have the Canon glass and I have tried out the EOS R and everything seems to work well with my EF lenses through an adapter. Using the controls on the R will require a learning curve, but the images are nice.

Yes Eos R is a great camera. I've had an Eos R for over a year and I'm not thinking about a change yet. In the night is amazing. Pixel size is the size of pixels. Personally, I don't take portraits much, but rather the landscape. But the landscape style panorama two or three rows and I really don't need 45Mpx here. So yes Eos R plus RF glass and you have won on years.
I went from a 5D mk2 to the R6 mk1, I was then able to relax about focus while shooting weddings and portraits. As you said it's about file size and dynamic range, so the R5 just doesn't fit with what I use the camera for. I'm looking at the R now as a travel camera, giving more MP for landscapes etc at a reasonable price point and agree with everything that you say.
Great points! I shoot weddings so I’m in a bit of a lock on the dual cards. If it had that, I would go R all the way. Perhaps they release one with dual slots down the line (fingers crossed)
I use both the R and the R5. The R is awesome especially when I have to use 2 cameras, I use the R5 for video and the R for photos. Canons biggest mistake was only giving the R a single card slot. However, I’ve never had an SD card failure.
COMPLETELY agree. When they did the R, it was the only game in town and they seemed to be hedging their bets on the feature list; big sensor but SINGLE card, etc... Thanks for watching!
Nice Pro EOS R video! I have the EOS R and love it! I di want to get the R5 but not for the reasons you mentioned. I want the in body stabilization as well as the animal AF. I photograph animal portraits from time to time and the animal AF in the R5 is amazing. Plus who couldn't use in body stabilization!!! Anything to help get the perfect focus! But I will not get rid of my EOS R when I do buy the R5. It will make a GREAT backup and B Roll camera for my videos!!!
Thanks for this video,I do photography as a hobby and side hustle. I mainly photograph family portraits. I’m currently using 5dmkiii and 6D but wanting to upgrade to mirrorless. I am trading in my 6D and 77D and few old lenses for an EOS R. I’m keeping the 5dmkiii. This is such a very helpful video because I’m going back and forth if I should just get the RP or R,both can do what I need but after watching this, I’ll get the R.
I'm currently thinking of moving to Canon mirrorless alongside my trusty 5D MKIII. This video has been really helpful, so thanks. I mainly shoot stills - portraits, landscapes and occasionally travel (have a much smaller and lighter fuji xt-20 system for travel). The difference in price between the R and R5 would buy a very decent lens and I wouldn't be under pressure to offload my 5D unless I stop using it. Mmmm looks like it's a no brainer.
Thanks for the physics reminder. I shoot the R as well, and I try to fill the frame with my composition as much as possible to get away from cropping anything. In side by sides, I usually prefer the color renderings of the R over the R5. The physics reminder tells me why... mystery solved, money saved. 🙂
Absolutely brilliant using technology with common sense .I want it for portrait photography and the RP is a jump up from my 6D and I will be buying a R as well shortly. I don't care for video frame rates or overheating Thanks 😆😆
It’s not lusting after the latest. It’s just having a tool for the job. I went from the 7D and 1D3 to the R7. Mainly wildlife- and as a hobby. It’s like night and day. The R7 IQ is better than the 1D3 - yes, in low light. So the advancement in tech I certainly noticed. I am not a pro, so I don’t mind taking my time to develop images. I have iso 10 000 shots of owls at night that have fine detail and cleaned up in Darktable. I could never get there with the previous bodies. And the AF, IBIS, seeing the image in tge EVF before taking it… just love it. 2years after you made this clip, I am looking at the R5 because the price is so attractive now
I've been using 5DIII and 6DII for recent years and saving up for R6 (which I had a privilege to review in 2021), while one of my subscribers offered a really good deal on EOS R with battery grip. Could not resist as I love "brick" cameras and\or battery grips. So I postponed dreams of R6 and bought R. Then I must admit it is a great camera. It was not far in AF from DSLRs when I reviewed it over three years ago, but now, after numerous firmware updates, it is truly fantastic! I have no complaints about it, except for cheap ergonomics ridiculously taken from my 200D/SL2 *BUT!* I still want R6 (maybe keeping R as well) and here's why (as a hybrid shooter\youtuber): IBIS - I love and need it for both handheld videos and photos with lenses without IS. Huge thing imho. Next - 1080p120 with AF - everybody loves smooth slomo. 12fps mechanical shutter with tracking (R gives only 3 in tracking priority mode) and even faster and more accurate AF (DPAF II + Digic X). And I agree on smaller file sizes, R6 has only 20mpx (image sensor from 1DXIII) and that's absolutely enough for me, considering it potentially gives less noise and more DR due to bigger pixels... And ergonomics, after 5D cameras (I owned each beside IV) you can't live without joystick and back wheel (although now it is sadly smaller) =))) So I'd love to have R6 as a main tool and R as a backup and highres cam if needed! Thanks for the video! You are sweet to watch!
I have a 90D, which is a 32.5 MP on a crop sensor, that turned out to be a bad experience using APC-S lens. The 90D, which I can't sell my way out of, actually turns out to be a great camera with L glass, like the 24-70mm f/2.8L, which cost around $500 more than the camera body, which I now own. So I have the lens for a full frame camera on a crop sensor camera. I am keeping the body, but I want a full frame option. 5D MK iv or EOS-R? I only take photos. I have rented the R6 MK II, and it was impressive, but worth the price?
The R6Mkii looks interesting and I'm planning to do a review of it at some point. The R6 is new and will have longer lifespan than the other two IF it does everything you want it to. I love my R but as all modern cameras unfortunately they age out at some point. Going with the Mk iv would be a commitment to DSLR and EF lenses.
I shout events with an RP and 6D. I love the 6D, it focuses in almost no light and takes great images with great color. But it just doesn't have the advantages of a mirrorless. Plus, as I buy more RF glass, it is no longer a good backup body. After shooting a 6 hour event with lots of music last week, I decided it is time to upgrade, but I wasn't sure about another RP. Today I saw a very good deal on a used R from a reputable seller. I briefly rented one before, so I do have a little experience. But I searched YT to make sure I didn't make a mistake. This video tells me I didn't. Great presentation - just personal experience and personal outlook - not trying to sell anything or win an argument. I think I can stop here.
Glad it's working out for you. It's getting a bit long in the tooth from a FEATURE perspective, but mine is still working day in and day out for me. In fact last night I had a session where I had to kill the ambient light to shoot and it grabbed focus extremely well.
I rented a Canon R and the 24-105 rf ism lens. I don't currently have any digital camera equipment. But I was able to figure out the menu fairly easily, I love the colors and picture quality right out of the camera. I am looking at renting the R5 to try out before buying a body, the main reason being the IBIS. But there's a decent chance that I'll pick up the R now and possibly add the R5 when the price drops a little more. Though it's as low as $3100 new already, which is just over my upper limit of $3,000.
you do an excellent job! the pictures you showed are great! now, my situation is not to upgrade but buy a second body for weddings ( I have the 5d mk iii and I love it ) but in lowlight sucks tbh, so I was thinking in buiying the R but the file size for high amount of shots scares me, would you think R6 V1 could be a good option? or should I go for the eos R despite the huges files?
The real question is whether you can deal with two different systems (and they are pretty different) DURING a wedding. I did a wedding with the R and the mkiii and boy was I juggling. It’s more about mirrorless vs dslr than which mirrorless. The Rs file size isn’t horrible for what you get vs dslr. Overall though, I think mirrorless is what working pros are gonna have to accept sooner rather then later. 🤷. Not sure I’ve helped?
@@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk thanks for the input, well I own 2 mirrorless but in Sony, so I have experience dealing with Dslr and mirrorless, my concern is if Eos R would do the job in a Wedding. ( focus, file sizes, overall experience with it )
Oh, yes, definitely. I shot quite a bit at ISO 4000-6000 and the images were nice. Noise was manageable and I’ve made some significant enlargements. I did a video on large prints shot at high ISO with it.
I do photography for a hobby, fam. Pictures, I love the feel of the R but it’s bulky for travel, I got the Sony A7c because its small and there was a sigma lens I wanted but its only for sony, and I like it also, so now I’m stocked with 2 systems I like. My favorite photos are all from eos R.
One thing you didn't mention is weight. That's a big change. I'm planning on getting an R5 eventually, when I can get it used at a more reasonable price. But coming from a 5D III myself, I'm always reluctant to take it on trips because of the weight. Though I also want a full frame sensor that I'm used to. So really thinking of grabbing an R for upcoming trips while I wait for the R5 to become more affordable, maybe after the R5 II and R1 have both come out.
Now if weight is your BIG thing, and you’re NOT a pro, the R8 that just dropped is a tiny full frame. I’m kind of working up a hot take on it, but first glance is that it’s an amateur camera to replace the RP. Thanks for watching!
@@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk Yeah, I thought about that -- it's actually what triggered my most recent round of thinking about this. But I've come to the conclusion I prefer the R for the money, considering I can get it used for around $1k at this point. Maybe even less as more people learn about the R8 and the price comes down. I'm tempted by having the newer autofocus system of the R8, but there are also things that aren't as good as the R, and even the R will be a big step up from my 5DIII as you said in the video.
@@d_dave7200 agree.... I'm SO FRUSTRATED that Canon is treating the R like an orphan... NO ONE is talking about an upgrade... They put more than they wanted to in it originally and now they are finding ways to do less and charge more on other cameras..
I own both cameras and although I feel the R5 is a better total package when it comes to image quality it's hard to tell them apart and the value for money of the R is incredible.
The most important part of your review for me is it is entirely about photography. So nice to not hear about CODEC's, $K and all that video stuff. I'm on the cusp of moving to the R series. The adapter makes moving to full frame WITH my glass a real option. And yes, I would like all of the features you highlighted. Thanks for saving me the 1,000 either for paying more for the R6 or buying the RP and not being satisfied.
Agree with the comments about mirrorless cameras autofocus, I bought the new R7 recently.. I'm thinking of replacing my 5d mk4 with a mirrorless camera and the R is at the top of my list at the moment this is mainly due to the fact that I would be able to buy a very good second hand one at a reasonable price. Many of the other Canon mirrorless cameras are better but too expensive. The R is plenty good enough apart from the moderate continuous shooting speed. But I'm covered for sports+ action with the R7 so unless the prices come down for the R6mk 2 then the used R it will be. Photography is a hobby to me but i can understand your points about gear paying for itself.
Love the Canon EOS R and I'm considering it versus Panasonic Lumix S5. I'm a casual shooter, I'm mostly into street photography. How much of a deal is the fact that R lacks IBIS? I don't currently own any glass so I'm free to go either way. Your thoughts?
I have no experience with the S5, but as to doing work in street photography, I think the R is a joy.... its light and easy to handle and honestly, if you choose lenses with stabilization, and aren't trying to use super slow shutter speeds I would think you should be fine. I hand-hold it in almost every session I shoot and I have to make large prints from the images and I VERY rarely have blur unless I was really unsteady. Thanks for watching!
Have to agree, I have the EOS R and use it for both video and photography production work, an excellent workhorse. Like you there would be only one thing it could do better and that being faster shutter speed so I could shoot more sports but there is no way I am spending another couple of thousand dollars to get something I only need occasionally..
I’ve never looked at it that way. I usually look at it as time. A couple of weeks ago I had a continuous group of 16 sessions that ran 4 hours. I put in a fresh batt at the start and I shot about 1100 images. Batt wasn’t particularly new. 🤷YMMV. Thanks for watching!
Good video Thanks :) I watched the whole thing, even though I have an 80% video focus and only a 20% Photography focus. Pleased, that you consider 30 MP on this size sensor a good match, since one of my potential choices is the Sony A74, which seems close enough at 33 MP. I'm still considering the R5, because it would enable me to get really good slow motion footage, which I like to use often - even a short, organic slowdown can focus the viewer in on some detail.
Hey the R5 is a GREAT camera if you have the budget and the need. If I were a video production studio primarily, the R5 would be very appealing to me for the frame rates for sure, but I'm printed portraits... Hey thanks for watching and good luck!
Very intuitive video , thank you. I recently upgraded to the 90D ( from the 600) huge leap and well worth it . I shoot a mix of landscapes and portraiture so for me a good step . I couldn't justify paying out for the mk3 tho I really wanted it so a compromise was made . Like you said I also had lot of glass so keeping the same mount was essential.
My 5dmk3 was 22mp and I have done 60"... its on the edge honestly. A landscape photographer may want a bit more if they were going that big because of the detail needs of landscape. My R with 30mp is definitely an improvement and easy at 60. My contention isn't that you would never want more megapixels really, its that once you are approaching 50, you would REALLY benefit from a larger sensor like medium format. 50mp on medium format will blow you AWAY because the photosites are so much larger. Thanks for watching!
Hi!! I'm living in South Korea. Nowadays I'm agonizing which is better than me eos r or eos rp. I'm gonna use in 10years maybe. Please choice me which one is better than me.
I think overall the R has more bang for the buck, BUT, its really looking questionable whether Canon will be supporting the R going forward. Depending on your budget you may look at the R8 or R10 as well? Hope this helps, thanks for watching!
I finally made the jump from my DSLR Canon EOS Mark III to the mirrorless Canon R6 only because I was finally able to use all my EF lenses and the adapter worse flawlessly. In addition, the auto-eye focus is incredible and almost eliminates out-of-focus shots. I would have liked the better build quality of the R5, but the guts of the R6 is identical to the R5 except for the higher pixel count which I didn't want because I am not a professional and didn't want to worry about buying extra storage space for files. And lastly, the low light ability of the R6 is outstanding. I do not shoot video, so that was not a concern for me. 😀👍📸
I don't understand. This video was about chosing the R over the R5? * Point 2 (auto-focus): why is this a reason to chose the R? The R5 is a mirrorless too and has the same autofocus, if not better. * Point 4 (use EF lenses with adapter): why is this a reason to chose the R? The adapter works on the R5 too. * Point 3 (dynamic range) is fishy too: DR on the R is really good. But the DR on the R5 is not worse. So why is this a reason to chose R over R5? Also, I miss the point of price: an R is significantly cheaper and although as an asset for a company it's not that big a deal, you still can run two R's with different lenses which is far more usable than one R5 setup. While the body itself is not that more expensive than an R... good CFexpress cards rack up pretty fast and you probably do have to upgrade your workstation and filestorage. Biggest features why I don't want to trade my R3 and R5 for an R: dual card slots, ISO/noise performance, -7EV focus, 8 stop in body image stabilization, weather proofing and AC wireless. Myself I want to have two cameras for a job, and for some situations I prefer the fast R3 with 24MP, and for other situations I prefer the high 45MP. For example a wedding I find myself shooting mainly the R5 during the day and R3 for B-roll, then switch to the R3 for most of the indoor reception work and use the R5 for some detail / still-life work. I think the R is a great camera but I find I don't use it anymore although it is still in my bag as a backup in case something breaks. The absence of a dual card slot makes me nervous on jobs. Imagine the horror of you SD failing, however often you switch for new cards you still lost a considerable part of the event.
The only issue I have with this is the point about glass. The entire EOS "R" line will all take existing EF glass with an adaptor. So that is not a reason to choose the R over the R5 or any other RF body. Otherwise it makes good points. What do you need vs what do you want at any given price.
The R would be great if it had image stabilization. I find 30mp to be a sweet spot. I love the R5. I just shoot in compressed RAW and the file sizes aren't bad at all and haven't noticed a difference in image quality
So you never went with the 5D Mark iv? I chose the 5d4 over the R because the R feels like a toy to me. Not knocking the R I just prefer the the DSLR is all.
I made the leap to mirrorless to pull the bandaid off because Canon is going to be phasing out DSLR's sooner rather than later and honestly, the lighter weight has been a great benefit to me. Thanks for watching!
I Needed 2 dual card cameras for work.. I had an EOS-R & 6DMKII.. tbh I loved my 6DMKII I'm still a lil sad I sold it. The EOS-R I had a love/hate thing with it.. I was so used to a certain way the buttons were laid out.. I liked the resolution.. technically I don't need more than that. I ended up buying the R5 & R6.. I gotta say, I do love both of them. I definitely like more than 20mp for some of the stuff I do.. but the R6 for much of what I do is more than fine.
@@njrivetelite I know - its a laugh/cry thing isn't it? I saw a review of it on Camera Conspiracies that had me laughing to tears almost calling it the Canon Cripple Hammer!
I think most professional photographers stick to what they like and know, and don't upgrade their gear all that often. They will usually just buy lenses to expand their range, and that's a smart thing to do. I got the R when it first released, and I primarily shoot architecture, landscapes and portraits, so it is more than enough for me. I've been using it for years and I know it inside and out, I'm quick with it, it's like a glove, and it does what I need. People pay way too much money for options that they don't really need or will never use, it's silly.
I had the R and used it for stills and video. I decided to upgrade to the R3. Why and Why I bought not one bur another R3. 1. The autofocus in video is light years ahead. The R is unreliable as a talking head camera and would loose focus. 2. The over and under exposure recovery is massively better than the R. A SOOC photo that you would say is unusable can be recovered. 3. The R, R6 and R5 bodies are to small for my hands and I never liked the feel of these dinky small cameras. 4. The controls AF is so much easier to use than the R. The R in my opinion didn't have enough buttons. What I like about the R is the colours straight out of camera. Very pleasing and easy to colour grade. The R3 not so. That is my take on the R compared to the newer cameras.
I have heard other people say this, but I’ve never experienced it myself. What I have noticed is that the color palette is a little bit different than my mark three. But I wouldn’t call it green. Maybe a little less red? I clean it up easily with a preset in Lightroom. Thanks for watching!
Can only agree. I also got the R and being used to the 5D III, I much prefer the old look. By a lot. I noticed the difference immediately reviewing first images directly in the EVF. Thought it was just a display thing, but nope, the difference is real, and very obvious when editing. The R is just off, and not easy to get right. Else I like it, many benefits going mirrorless, but what matters is the image rendering, and sadly that lacks IMHO.
Obviously there are people with different opinions, but you've given a very thoughtful, unemotional argument for your choice. I don't disagree with anything you said but I'll confess that since I'm a hobbyist, sometimes my purchases lean more towards the want rather than the need side of the equation. I've heard photographers with a national presence say the same thing you're saying - if a piece of gear doesn't make financial sense, i.e., pay for itself, don't buy it Stand your ground.
Hi. I want to create beautiful images of people so they can see the beauty in themselves and each other. I feel you can help me avoid a lot of mistakes, ‘cause I’m older, retired , and don’t have the time nor money to make huge mistakes when I can avoid them . I’m subscribed and I like what I’m learning from you. Thanks.😊
Let me know if this video was helpful to you in choosing a camera!
I have also a EOS R for more than two years. And now just have the new R3. The autofocus ability with R3 is a huge huge update, it's amazing specially for shooting motorsports and animals, like my cats and dog😁 EOS R can't catch them😄
And I'm happy that the R3 doesn't have 40 megapixels, because otherwise the card will get full very fast, and cost a lots more hard drives... It's make the life easier with not more than 30 megapixels.
@@RR821212 I have heard that the R3 is spectacular in autofocus. If I had the need and the budget I'd be on it in a second!
It was helpful…yes!
@@lifesbeautiful3024 Glad it was useful! Next week I will be releasing a video with a recommendation for a beginning photographer's first flash.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Had the R and sent back within 3 weeks; Got the R5 and it is the best camera I ever had. shot Canon 18 years, and Nikon about 10. Just my 2 c
R5 is a great cam, definitely agree on that, but curious why you sent the R back so quickly, what didn't it do that you needed?
The Canon R II will most likely be great, if they keep it 30MP
"Camera body envy" is the death of profitability for a professional. Thanks so much for watching!
@@thommysides4616 I'm talking about that very issue in a video thats going to drop Monday!
Thanks for watching!
One of the best vlog I’ve seen in a while. You spoke the truth and you were honest. I like that a lot. I totally agree with you, that physic’s makes more sense than technology. Well done!👍
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much, this gave me a lot of clarity on what I need to to. Thanks!!
Thanks for watching!
I'm sold! Thanks! I've been on the fence about getting the "R" this helped a lot.
Thanks for the chat. Will consider an R.
I have a video dropping Monday looking at the EOS R compared to whats new and what may be coming... thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching!
Great feedback from one professional to another. I'm using both mirrorless and DSLRs still. I just love that 50 megapixels when I can crop in some. No longer shooting commercially, I'll probably retain the R and get another, will see what the market demands, Keep up the great work.
Thanks for watching!
Well thank you so much - I hope it works well for you... mine is still going strong even though I have to look at other cameras for the channel! LOL
@@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk I was on a downloading spree one day and downloaded all kinds of videos about the R.... not commenting on most. I got to find that guys channel and subscribe to him! There was one point where you say coffee and photography... I think it was on your cup, so I hunted you down today using that phrase - ha ha. Fully agreed. I have my EosR for over 3 years now. R5 is not my cup of tea.
Thanks so much for watching!
Man..... how I love your comment here! My wife did her first wedding last week. I'll be sure to pass on to her what you said here. I also like what you said about Canvas prints and black and whites. You should have your own TH-cam channel...lol.
🤣 thanks for watching!
Thank you so much Hayward for the very informative and sincere review! I loved it! God bless you and good luck!
Thanks for watching!
Great video…..thanks for posting it . I recently bought a used R and look forward to using it.
Thanks for watching!
Yeah, the focus with mirrorless just rocks doesn’t it? Thanks for watching!
Great points! I shoot weddings so I’m in a bit of a lock on the dual cards. If it had that, I would go R all the way. Perhaps they release one with dual slots down the line (fingers crossed)
Canon gives with one hand and takes with the other most of the time so who knows... LOL. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching!
Glad it helped - thanks for watching!
if you want to make a move try the Canon 5D MK IV or the Eos R ....they both use the same size and megapixel sensor........
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the reasons you provided. I just bought an R!
thanks for watching!
Absolutely brilliant using technology with common sense .I want it for portrait photography and the RP is a jump up from my 6D and I will be buying a R as well shortly. I don't care for video frame rates or overheating Thanks 😆😆
I love mine - it's very capable... thanks for watching!
Just got one and am excited to see how I do using it.
Congrats!
Thanks for a great, honest and down to earth review - that’s exactly what I needed.
Thank you so much!
Why you selected to purchase the EF-EOS R adapter that does not have Control Ring ?
It seems to be a useful feature ?
It’s just not the way I would make adjustments. I can see it being good for someone who would use it.
Thank you for validating my EOS R purchase. I recently moved up from an EOS 70D.
Thanks for watching!
Pike Place is so good... and yeah, I own two EOS R and I've used them a lot over the past couple years.
Glad its working out for you - thanks for watching!
What is the difference with EOS R and EOS R5 when you are taking high speed photography with flash? What is fps with flash? Thank you.
you do an excellent job! the pictures you showed are great! now, my situation is not to upgrade but buy a second body for weddings ( I have the 5d mk iii and I love it ) but in lowlight sucks tbh, so I was thinking in buiying the R but the file size for high amount of shots scares me, would you think R6 V1 could be a good option? or should I go for the eos R despite the huges files?
@@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk that sounds great! Thanks again!
Your video and presentation……..simply FANTASTIC 👌🏾
Thanks for watching!
Very helpful and real world honesty. In another video they were complaining about resolution at 5 stops under...well don't do it then....
LOL! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching!
I would like to know what kind o physics make you place image quality from EOS R over R5?
I have a Eos r for around 4 years. The shutter count I recently check is around 250,000 clicks, it still work like a charm 👍
Mine is still chugging along!
I love my R, it's been a very solid camera for me. Thanks for watching!
Maybe canon will hear everyone I hear and refresh the R! Thanks for watching!
Got the R6 mk2. It works just as well with EF lenses. Witing for a second hand R to arrive with the 24-105 RF lens.
You're going to love that lens.. thanks for watching!
Nice video. How many photos can you get on a single battery?
I’ve never looked at it that way. I usually look at it as time. A couple of weeks ago I had a continuous group of 16 sessions that ran 4 hours. I put in a fresh batt at the start and I shot about 1100 images. Batt wasn’t particularly new. 🤷YMMV. Thanks for watching!
@Coffee and Photography Talk Thanks for responding, and that's good to know.
Good video Thanks :)
I watched the whole thing, even though I have an 80% video focus and only a 20% Photography focus.
Like you said I also had lot of glass so keeping the same mount was essential.
thanks for watching!
Love your honest opinion for the EOS R .Im going the same route as you. Thanks for sharing. You got yourself a new subscriber, too 😀
Thanks so much for watching!
You are a very reasonable man. Great to watch and listen to your logic.
Thanks for watching!
So, you can do 60" prints with 20 megapixel?
My 5dmk3 was 22mp and I have done 60"... its on the edge honestly. A landscape photographer may want a bit more if they were going that big because of the detail needs of landscape. My R with 30mp is definitely an improvement and easy at 60. My contention isn't that you would never want more megapixels really, its that once you are approaching 50, you would REALLY benefit from a larger sensor like medium format. 50mp on medium format will blow you AWAY because the photosites are so much larger. Thanks for watching!
good real talk, thanks for your helpful views!

It’s quite a leap to the first mirrorless, congrats!
Eventually looking to upgrade from Canon EOS M50 Enjoy nature photography but also need video too Thank you for the useful information
Thanks for watching!
100% agree. The pixel pitch of these high mp 35mm cameras are nearing smartphone sizes.
Thanks for watching!
The R would be great if it had image stabilization. I find 30mp to be a sweet spot. I love the R5. I just shoot in compressed RAW and the file sizes aren't bad at all and haven't noticed a difference in image quality
Yes on the 30mp!
VERY HELPFUL! I ll buy it! thanks!
Canon makes sure you don't get all you want in any 1 camera I think :). lol. Thanks for watching!
@@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk was excited for the R5C.. but they took my damn Ibis
@@njrivetelite I know - its a laugh/cry thing isn't it? I saw a review of it on Camera Conspiracies that had me laughing to tears almost calling it the Canon Cripple Hammer!
Yes, big THUMB up, thanks for sharing Sir!!!

Interesting on that color grade issue... hmm. Thanks for watching!
I subscribed and the 1309 thumb up is mine - Great talking I have the same point of view.

Почему на Canon EOS R фото имеют зеленый оттенок? Это как-то можно в самой камере исправить?
I have heard other people say this, but I’ve never experienced it myself. What I have noticed is that the color palette is a little bit different than my mark three. But I wouldn’t call it green. Maybe a little less red? I clean it up easily with a preset in Lightroom. Thanks for watching!
@@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk Yes, there is less red, more green tint. Thank you.
How do you get into this kind of business. I have alot of amazing pics that would be perfect for business
Which kind of business are you referring to? Portrait studio? If so, the best starting point would be ppa.com. Thanks for watching!
Selling your amazing photos.
I like the EOS R, but I prefer the color profiles on the CR2 files on the 5D Mark II and Mark III, compared the CR3 files on the EOS R
They are a bit different and I’ve had to adapt my workflow.
Hey, in terms of a hobbyist, the sky is the limit as is the enjoyment! I envy hobbyists this! LOL. Thanks for watching!
