Not even G9 nor LX100 for that matter. This EOS R videos image quality and color science look pretty mediocre. Coupled with that 1.7x crop factor, definitely a big no-no for shooting videos.
I was watching this review on my 4k TV and the video looked really soft/muddy. Thought it might be TH-cam's compression, but the images (and product shots) were really sharp. Then I re-watched DPReview's recent X-T3 review and man what a difference!
Well, he never said the X-T3 was a full frame camera. In reality APS-C is marginally bigger than 35mm motion picture, smaller than Super 35mm motion picture film frame. So "full-frame" is relative.
Completely agree. He hyped the hell out of that camera when it has soft 4k, cropped 4k, weak digital image stabilization, front focuses a lot, and tracking isn't the greatest.
Interesting and beneficial use of multiple input from Jordan and Steve.......with neither of them being a "Yes Man" to each other, they shoot differently and this brings more info to the viewer about how things can be managed when "problems" surface........nice touch.........
That photo at 13:31 is so awesome. That alone could sell cameras, it made me want one.

3 FPS in stills, soft looking video with 1.6 crop in 4K, mediocre focusing speed and accuracy, last generation sensor, no IBS but it feels nice in hand. Well done Canon. :)
Very sharp 4k, 1.7 times crop, very fast and accurate autofocus in stills, very accurate and cinematic AF in video mode, great sensor from the 5D mk.IV, only electronic stabilization (except from the great IS in the lenses.)
I wish these manufacturers would stop worrying about the top LCD and put a better feature in its place, ie more custom buttons, or another analog knob. I understand on this camera they want you to use the new RF more and I think it’s a forward thinking item (as a Sony shooter) but the top LCD just seems like a waste on a mirrorless camera when you see all that info in the EVF. Thanks guys as always!
I also can't live without a top LCD. It is the best way to know and set the exposure settings without needed to look through the viewfinder or at the rear display. I usually check it while talking to the models etc.. In this case it would be really awkward and look unprofessional if I would be looking through the viewfinder to do this
i think its fine if it allows you to see stuff you cant see on the screen due to sunlight or lack of sunlight. that said id better have a better screen and a light sensor to switch the display into night mode than the top lcd, then use that for a dial of course
This is really a superior video, truly. I've learned things here that I've not seen mentioned in other reviews to date, or at least not in the same detail. And the visit with Stephen Eckert was very worthwhile. Bravo, DP Review.
I did the same. It's unfortunate because this footage is quite at odds with what I've seen elsewhere. If you look at 2:30, it's pretty obvious the image isn't really "soft," but is actually back-focused on the back of the chair. Almost like it was a lens issue...? Operator error? DPAF malfunction? Would love to get some input from the OP...
I've had the EOS R for a day and I think the video quality is great when you leave the digital stabilizer off. It does seem to soften with the digital stabilizer added. The RF 24-105 IS does a great job on its own, I'd be happy shooting with that lens in a lot of situations.
Nah, Tony is just leaving room for the future as he has learned his lesson while reviewing the 6dii. You can't tell the true value and utility of a camera when you have to push out a review after a week or two. Ultimately, it's better for your credibility to publish an update on a product than an "I was wrong" video.
I agree that Tony was being overly generous with that comment, but otherwise the review was unbiased and showed how lacking the Canon camera is compared to the A7iii. So, I think Tony was just making the point that it's not a clear winner to ALL people. Some people are heavily invested in Canon glass and dont need all the features you get in the A7iii... so to THEM, it's not as clear as saying that the Sony camera is the winner. THEY might still want to get the Canon one... if they dont mind staying in an abusive relationship with Canon. But, still, I agree that Tony should have made a clearer statement about which camera won there. The A7iii did, without a doubt.
you guys are coming back strong. first few vids with dpreview, it felt different. but this is like the old school chris and jordans reviews i like. keepin it real
Damn, great review (especially the use of the EFS 17-55mm), but the only thing missing from this review was a real world test of Low Light photography and video. No one else has put the EOS R through it’s paces in low light. There’s a Canon produced video on their channel showcasing a photographer taking photos of miners in very low light conditions but I’d love to see you guys test low light for yourselves.
What you expect. It was hunting a lot even in the day, will be even worse in low light logically. They also said the pictures qaulity is behind competition. Just go to DPreview, choose in studio scene comparsion tool 5DIV and you can compare the ISO performance for still which Is worse then Sony. And ISO in 4k Is restricted to only 12800 So it tells the full story. Subpar performance for more money then competition.
Did anyone do any tests for photos? :-) I know, and understand this is not great for video shooters.. but, what about the main functions as a stills camera LOL? Nothing was mentioned, and I feel like if your going to do a review, this should have been covered. But, great job talking about all the video aspects!
I came here to comment that I agree with Chris in reference to the top LCD. I mean, I see how some people could find it useful I suppose, but I personally don't see a need for it.
If this is shot on EOS R than video quality in many situations was not good at all. Muddy and blurry. Is there excessive amount of upscaled 720p footage maybe?
1.7 crop means your basically using full frame glass on a m43 sized sensor. Because of this you are not able to use the lenses resolving power to their fullest extent, and we should expect soft footage.
@ its 1:40 am and watched it with my data pack over, just coz i had to wait for data cycle to refresh so i could upload all my stock photos to multiple sites..😁 Thankfully for me, ill be going for sony. Never considered any canon too seriously.. its a bad time to be a dedicated loyal canon shooter.
MikedieONE you’re correct on the Wi-Fi point. My 5D3 doesn’t have it and that is the one feature I miss compared to the 70D. As a first significant entry it’s a great effort, which will show development over time. Mostly it appears to be a mirror less 5D4 with some new twists. The absence of a 2nd card at release time is disappointing. The feature control on the new lenses or the adapter ring looks like an interesting innovation. More to come yet from Canon to be sure.
My EOS R arrived today, and after some nervousness based on Jordan's video autofocus experience, I can happily report that for me its every bit as good as the 5D Mark IV even with adapted EF glass. My only gripes so far (other than the obvious spec disappointments) are: 1) Auto ISO is not possible in CLOG 2) Non-Canon EF-S glass doesn't auto-crop 3) The multi function touch bar is stupidly horrible idea. CANON, get rid of it! We need tactile buttons and direct access to ISO & WB 4) The rear dial is to far away from my thumb. Other than that, its actually quite a nice unit. Its biggest problem is, oddly enough for a Canon, its operation. Its comfortable enough to hold, but the lack of buttons and silly placement make it less comfortable to actually use.
Thank you, Chris and Jordan. That 4K is really soft even for my untrained eye...and digital IS is a joke. The videos shoot on GH5 from your channel are way better.
The main advantage with the video recording of full frame cameras is that you can have easily shallow depth of field with relatively wide lenses. Otherwise the video shooting with smaller sensor like micro 4/3 and telephoto lenses can be equally good and with shallow depth of field. The crop mode of the RP during video recording is a big minus.
I think, most reviews miss a little detail. I might be wrong (and I'm glad to be corrected for I haven't used this camera yet), but as far as I understand, this camera actually wants to be a stills camera with added video features as alittle treat, but it doesn't try to be an allrounder or even a proper video camera. But somehow I've got the feeling, that most reviews focus on the video features (or maybe I've seen the wrong reviews). That's like watching a WW2 Drama and then after leaving the cinema complaining "Gosh that was a bad comedy!" It might have had comedic parts, but that wasn't the films focus. It's a bit like the 6D MK2 and the 6D MK1 before. Many complained about the specs, but I haven't heard of anyone who bought one to be severely disappointed. I have to confess that I'm mainly a stills shooter so I'm not that hurt by the (actually rather poor) video capabilities of this camera. But as such I can see this camera working very well for me. Also, it isn't aimed at professionals. It could have been (and maybe should have been), but it isn't. What it is aimed for in my opinion are Canon users, who want a DSLM and might be thinking about changing to Sony. It might not beat Sony on the spec sheet (and in some points won't beat it in the real world), but it offers a lot for Canon users: A familiar, easy to use ecosystem, good AF, lovely colours and full compatiility with existing Canon glass (EF, EF-S and due to the short flange distance even Canon F, if I'm not mistaken) plus it also uses the Canon LP-E6 batteries that every Canon user should have. So the EOS R doesn't want to be the start of your new system, it wants to enhance and complement your existing one. But as I said, I haven't used this camera yet. If you have, I'll be glad to learn from you about it. Anyway, as usual this is a great review!
I feel the same way .. I couldn't give 2 hoots less about video in my cameras (i'm only a stills shooter) .. I've read my entire 90D and 7D (Mark I) manuals cover-to-cover, EXCEPT the video sections, because I just have zero use for it (but that's just how I use the cameras, obviously) .. I'm definitely interested in the EOS R to finally make the jump to both full frame and mirrorless without completely breaking the bank .. I'd love to go w/ the R6, but the higher price tag is making that less likely (and I'd really prefer a higher MP, since I've become very used to the 32MP in my 90D)...........
At least you all got some sailing and Hawaii waterfalls in, need another Hawaii vacation on another camera launch. Feels like outdoors Ontario was orchestrating the nature strings as you were walking through there. 🌲🐻
How does it focus in low light ? Some test footage of that would have been nice. I am a Canon DSLR user and often find myself disappointed when testing mirrorless cameras’ AF in darker conditions.
I really like the benefits of Canon and was looking to upgrade my 80d, but this is like a bad combination of the 6d mark ii and M50 with an annoying touchbar and poor ergonomics, built from leftover parts from the parts bin. I want to see a review of the Nikon Z6 and if that is not favorable, I'm moving to Sony or Panasonic for video (like many people).
If you're moving because of video, you may want to consider the Fuji X-T3 as well. Their lens selection is meh, but depending on your needs it may work out even better. These guys just did a nice review on the X-T3. For FF, I agree, just get the A7 III it's already a proven work-horse. I'm sure Panasonic will be great and they have a history with MILC so they'll be ahead of CaNikon, but they still won't use PDAF and I'm sure they'll be going through their own first-gen learning curves. Not to mention the uber-expensive L-mount glass. Given the cost of the G9, GH5 and GH5S, I can't imagine how they'll price the FF bodies. Won't be cheap is my guess.
Any informed opinions here on how stabilised video looks using the RF 24-105 with the IS on? Im loathe to give up the dreamy IS in my little Lumix G85 but one camera would be handier than two (6D for stills). Have only found two youtube clips showing examples of this, more would be great.
Great review guys, looks like Canon has some issues, as do all of the new mirrorless options. Thank you for pointed out the issues with shooting LOG, lack of exposure aids is very bad when shooting that flat a profile. Looking forward to your eventual Z6 review.
If a mirrorless is basically useless for video (like the EOS R seems to be) than what is the point of going mirrorless for existing Canon Full Frame users (who are the only people that might have been interested in this camera)? The biggest issue with this camera is the price. Would it have been the cheapest full frame option on the market it might have had a chance. Being so much more expensive than the A7 III I can't imagine many people will buy it. And something else: I'd like to see you guys do a side by side comparison of some mirrorless cameras for continuous eye autofocus and include the G85. In my experience it works fantastic even with multiple people in the frame. (the face detect focus of the G85 focuses on the closer eye) Any chance of that happening? Cheers from Germany 🙂
Good that I hadn't seen this review when I was buying this camera a year before. But now (and a year before) many issues that were in this video are fixed with new firmware and eye af works pretty good and with servo af.
What do you guys think (everything is just about 4K filming on eosR) if i already have best canons crop lens 17-55/f2.8 that is left from my former 80D is it important to change it to at least 16-35/2.8L II lens? Will I feel any difference in 4K filming? Because of cropped 4K widest 16/17mm field of view is almost the same. Money not a question for me but does it worth spending another 1000$ for what will I get from L lens? Photography/videography is my hobby... N.B. I have RF24-105/f4 lens aswell. But need something wider.
Can't wait for the KW video coming after seeing this, everyone else having fantastic fun, socializing and generally being fabulous :) Great work guys.. lovin it.
Hello Chris and Jordan, love your videos since you guys were at TCS TV. I got a little bit of suggestion. I'm really intrigued to see your format combined with the old DP Review Field Test. I thought the way the ytest a specific camera by covering an event (eg. The Rodeo in 1DX Mark II field test or going for camping/outing in the Nikon D500 video). Just my two cents. Cause that kind of test can push a camera in review and it's also fun to watch. Keep up the good work.
I feel to have been waiting a very long time to upgrade my (now occasionally glitchy) A6000 with 35mm 1.8 OSS. I was quite prepared to jump to this Canon - as it really is available now - particularly with such a great range of lenses at launch - but! Lack of image stabilisation and a ridiculous 4K crop-factor seem to put paid to that idea (2 slots would have been nice but one isn't a deal-breaker). I can't wait another 6 months (perhaps 48 months - it's Canon, after-all) for an EOS RII as my A6000 is on its way out - but after 14k images so no complaints - I'm thinking I'll just have to wait another 6-8 weeks for the A7III/Batis 40mm F2 combination. I loved the colour rendition in your video, but... Close but no cigar...
Thanks for the review, done in depth and very helpful for making a buying decision. The review itself corresponded almost exactly to what I had assumed from reading the spec-sheet. The flaws in this camera show that it's not quite prime time at this stage. This model badly needs an upgrade already - probably an upgrade that will hike the price point. For the moment Canon - this is a no deal for me.
Remember how people were bashin the 6D II saying it should've had the 5D IV sensor? Canon delivered on point. The Mirrorless 6D III, much better than the 6D II but you still need to do better if you want to compete in this day and age.
I am shooting in low light and high iso and need to be on silent shutter. Are the rolling shutter issues any better with the firmware update? I think you can now do multishots
What’s the problem with the on/off switch? It’s the same position on all the other enthusiast and pro level cameras with the exception of the 1D series
I was excited for this camera - as I'm a long-time Canon fan and have a strong lens investment. After seeing some reviews and reading some specs I was thinking about going a different direction - but I didn't. I picked-up this camera (from the Camera Store - shout out to fellow Calgarians). It's a better camera then the spec sheet shows. Although very new to it - I have been quite impressed and am enjoying it in the field. To be fair, my skill set and my needs are such that this camera hits a sweet spot for me in terms of preserving my lens investment, not being an expensive body relative to others, and giving me all the features I need in a good quality package. It's an upgrade from my D6 - so I'm long over-due for a new camera - which likely has something to do with how happy I am with it. Your review was great - very well done! If there was one thing I would have liked to have seen - it may have been a review of the support system around the camera. Specifically, I think that the control of the camera using a smart phone and the transfer of files to a smart phone while shooting is important. It makes a second card slot a little less of a concern. It's also an option for long exposure, etc - where the image stabilization is done via a tripod.
What was your experience with writing speed to the memory card, when talking still pictures? I’ve only had the opportunity to test out the preproduction version of the Canon EOS R, I used the the Sony 128GB SDXC UHS II 300/299MB/s card and I was surprised how slowly it was writing to the card.
Just a small question for a hobbist still learning:As an example 11:40 : Why do you use ISO 400 1/400th in this picture where you want to freeze the frame (and not show motion) instead of using 1/1600th and going down to the base ISO? Isn't base ISO when possible always better than introducing noise?
You have it backwards. At 1/1600th shutter speed would require an ISO of 1600 for equal exposure. anyway this camera is a total turd. they were trying to be nice otherwise canon wouldn't give them any more free holidays

Great Review! It's probably the best out there yet - thank you very much!
Thanks for review, the best one so far.. My EOS R G.A.S. is coffined now.. This camera seems to be a work-in-process stuff, not really a refined finished product worth $2,300.. I prefer $500 M50 more.. Wait to see S1 full spec in few months.. Thanks again C&J
First review that they really push the camera and actually tell people the limitations it has. That's why Chris and Jordan are by far, the best reviewers. Tony Northrup compared the Eos R with the a7III, and the Canon lost on every comparision, but he managed to say they were even because Canon has a flip screen... So yeah, bloggers can know easily how are they recordind the 1.7 cropped 4k, the shitty 720p 120fps or the ridiculously bad video due to the electronic stabilizer. He also stated tha is better ergonomically then the a7, but he complained about the AF button (same as Chris), the touchpad (same as Chris), and that it has no joystick for focus point.. the a7III may not have the better grip, but apart from that, every button and solution they came up with made the camera pretty close to perfect, specially in my hand. Peter McKinnon says he is in love with the camera, and he talked about 120p video, which is limited to 720p an I think he didn't even mention it. Not even the problems with the stabilization or the softness of the 4k video. Nikon and Canon has margin to improve (at least Nikon has really good video capabilities), but until the next generation, when they fix this first problems and have a wider range of lenses, I doubt that people who moved to Sony will come back to their original brands. PS: I have to say than Iike the styling of Nikon and Canon better, the a7 desing is starting to be outdated, it has been 4 years since the a7II came out, it's time to redising for better grip, a little better ergonomics and specially a better aesthetics.
The On Off switchbhas always been on the Left in Pro Bodies. Also the Mode Dial too. I dont understand how thats a Flaw? Considering they gave the Mode Dial to right. Should be half thankful haha.
Mako Sports because it’s a Canon review. I love Canon colors and durability standard enough not to ever watch a Sony review. All I need to know is that Sony makes their cameras in China.
@@makosports I'll have to respectfully disagree with that assessment (at least the "always" part). I've never been a fan of Canon DSLR footage, but my C200 and XF400 are perfectly sharp. BTW, as I noted elsewhere in this thread, if you look at 2:30, it's pretty obvious the image isn't really "soft," but is actually back-focused on the back of the chair. Almost like it was a lens issue...? Operator error? DPAF malfunction? Would love to get some input from the OP...
Thanks for the great review. I just subscribed to your channel. You said you were “back in Calgary”. I live in Calgary, too. I’m a Canon user. I have an old 60D and I’m looking to do a major upgrade. Currently I’m trying to decide if I should stay with Canon or maybe switch to the Sony A7R IV when it’s released later this year. I love the flip screen on the Canon and use it almost exclusively compared to using the view finder. It’s fantastic when shooting straight up or down. I will miss that with the Sony. I also understand I’m going to need to switch lenses, too - another big expense - but it seems Sony has taken the lead in camera technology and state of the art products.
My first SLR camera, back in the summer of '70, was the Canon FT QL and came with a Canon 50mm f1.4 with the aperture ring near the front edge of the lens, so the 'new' Canon lens design isn't so new.
Yeah, it doesn't seem like a camera made for us. I'm a video guy, but I don't see much that I don't already have in my little GH4. I could add an AtomOS to my little GH4 and have a monster video machine. I don't even see a way to use my Canon FD lenses on the new R mount either. At the very least I could mount old Nikon lenses on the Z6. The X-T3 and the Blackmagic P4k are the only two cameras I see as being a step up from what I have.
Great video guys and totally fair in my opinion! The video specs are really sad to hear about. XT3 crushes it for much less money and even less of a crop! ;)
It is the best first full frame mirrorless camera iteration from Canon, a very good start. For me as a Canon photographer, is a must have, not that I can afford it, but nice to dream about. In fact, it is a promise for the things to come. I won't compare it with anything, but Canon products. So, I am content. BTW, regarding the touch control that simulate a slide and two buttons, it is good to eliminate the mechanical problems real buttons develops in time. But I think only one slide is enough right now.
I was ready to buy one tonight...but....after this review, there I go again to think of Sony Aiii (and Panasonic 4/3) as a better option for the future ahead!!
Pretty much same conclusion I had. The processing power isn't there to actually make this a camera worth 2300 USD. Since it's pretty much the same processing power they had in their M50 witch they price at 800 USD...
Canon should have swapped the positions of the top LCD and the On/Off button. It makes more sense ergonomically as it lets you operate the camera one handed.
Not really, the biggest question would be, why do we have a wheel for an on off position.... Looks like a second control wheel to me that they didn't finished to implement.
Great review!!! But I would go Sony, I’m an urban explorer shooter and photo and video is really important, waiting for a7siii and I’m using a 7sii since release
What do you mean by "But I would go Sony"? There’s nothing in this review that suggests they prefer the Canon overs Sony, in fact its the opposite; they emphasize many of the shortcomings of the Canon.
@@villagranvicent I know right? 95% of the comments are just complaining about the camera, yet I couldn't seem to find a single person comment about those beautiful shots. Definitely some of my favorite shots Chris has done.
6 ปีที่แล้ว +4
Chris did a great job with the images and managed to get around the shortcomings of this camera. That's what a good photographer does but this is not a test of his skills, it's the test of a camera.
Carl Ryan gosh, it must have been so hard getting around the shortcomings of a sensor with great image quality for stills and absolutely amazing lenses. This is the type of comment someone that doesn't actually go outside and take pictures makes.
I traded in my 5DIV while for a pre-order of the EOS-R. I figured my 5DIV would plummet in value soon so swapped it for almost zero extra cost. However, after watching this video I fear I may have made a mistake. I've not received the R yet, but my primary reason for getting the R was to be able to film through the viewfinder while maintaining the 5DIV's great video autofocus and gaining C-LOG and a flippy screen. However, if the DPAF doesn't work as as well as the 5DIV then that is a major disappointment.
I figured it was riskier to hang on to the 5DIv, in resale value terms.. And I was right.... The following week is trade in value dropped like a stone. The Sony is without doubt a better camera, but this is to be used as a B camera with my Canon C200, so switching systems would be a major hassle and cost for me. Totally agree though, most people should get a Sony.
OMG you guys shot this in my backyard , it would have been great to bump into you guys here on West Maui. Just about every clip has been at one of my locations we often shoot weddings at or go surfing. Not too sure about this Canon EOS R but I hope you enjoyed your time on the island. cheers!
Thanks for having me on gentlemen, it was a great time!
Stephen will you be doing a review on the video in EOS R?
AP Studios yup! We’re working on our full review right now, should be out in a few weeks
That 4k footage didnt hold up next to the gh5 footage at all.
Not even G9 nor LX100 for that matter. This EOS R videos image quality and color science look pretty mediocre. Coupled with that 1.7x crop factor, definitely a big no-no for shooting videos.
Yeah, I have been wondering about that crop factor. My little GH4 does about that well. The balance of power has shifted to Fuji, Sony and Panasonic.
I was watching this review on my 4k TV and the video looked really soft/muddy. Thought it might be TH-cam's compression, but the images (and product shots) were really sharp. Then I re-watched DPReview's recent X-T3 review and man what a difference!
BROis the XT3 is not a full frame camera.
Well, he never said the X-T3 was a full frame camera. In reality APS-C is marginally bigger than 35mm motion picture, smaller than Super 35mm motion picture film frame. So "full-frame" is relative.
This is what I call HONEST review. Peter McKinnon should be ashamed.
Completely agree. He hyped the hell out of that camera when it has soft 4k, cropped 4k, weak digital image stabilization, front focuses a lot, and tracking isn't the greatest.
You guys mean Peter and all the other YTubers out there weren't being honest in their reviews? Bummer
Those TH-camrs can't monetize the maximum if they are honest. They are there for business.
I unsubscribed from this dude months ago, he was too much of canon fanboy, and canon sucks,
Michael Tapl his preset sucks so bad....
I hope their next, more professional mirrorless camera is a lot better.
and the native lenses for it are expensive as balls.
Maybe because the EOS R's sensor is largely based from EOS 5D IV
Just 3fps?😨
Thanks for save my time😬
Very sharp 4k, 1.7 times crop, very fast and accurate autofocus in stills, very accurate and cinematic AF in video mode, great sensor from the 5D mk.IV, only electronic stabilization (except from the great IS in the lenses.)
Look coming from a D-SLR shooter we have to ease in to change. For the people 40 plus we are used to Top lcd and a proper camera has one
game2572 I can understand that.. I’m 43 this year as well, but only have a few mirrorless years behind me so I can see that perspective
Prashanth Panicker if you’re using a dslr I understand but on a mirrorless this info is displayed through your EVF and on the back screen.
720p 120fps, 1.7x crop, great achievement Canon! This is truly camera of the future (future versions will do 480p)
I think Canon's original marketing theme was Back to the Future.
Brian Mi yes but it does have a full articulating screen.
laggy touchscreen, half backed dual pixel af...and many more cripple
And maybe in future: 144p :v
I loved the last 3 minutes of brutal honesty
This is really a superior video, truly. I've learned things here that I've not seen mentioned in other reviews to date, or at least not in the same detail. And the visit with Stephen Eckert was very worthwhile. Bravo, DP Review.
Exactly
The video was so soft that I kept checking my TH-cam quality settings to ensure that I was in 1080p. Not good.
Agreed. lots of artifacting, too.
you still have to count in that 1080p is not its native resolution since it's shot in 4k... so yt itsself did some downgrade magic.
But Kyle, no one wants to hear about practical hands-on experience when we're all having so much fun bashing from the bleachers! J/K, I hear you.
I watched about 1000 hours of Jareds Channel and there never ever was so much of Stephen... The Slowmo in the Pool made my Day.
Stephen deserves more love. He's an awesome guy and insanely good at what he does. I was thrilled to have him on the show.
I like his work too. He's much more then a side kick. Thanks for haveing him!
'There is no clear winner' - Tony Northrup comparing this camera to the A7III. Thanks for your honest take Chris & Jordan!
Tony was politicking hard trying to show the camera in the best light, this review is more objective.
DeusExAstra the A7iii still has a lower resolution and it’s made in Thailand with no articulating screen. I know the truth hurts but just get over it.
The tiltable screen is better than articulating screen for waist level shooting.
you guys are coming back strong. first few vids with dpreview, it felt different. but this is like the old school chris and jordans reviews i like. keepin it real
Ladislav svencik yes I can tell another Sony fanboy. Stop the BS.
See 20:36
Yeah. I've reached that moment a bit later)
I think cameras with 'full frame' sensors are unsuitable for video.
You think incorrectly.
1.7 crop means your basically using full frame glass on a m43 sized sensor. Because of this you are not able to use the lenses resolving power to their fullest extent, and we should expect soft footage.
I'm Canon user for about 25 years and for more than a year start to be a Fuji user too - For a quite long time, CANON slowly digging its own grave...
The first guy who talked to Chris had his t-shirt inside out.
He's boofing when Chris knocked...
I think it was to avoid logos
That's a pre-production t-shirt, they're not allowed to show the front on camera.
the 4k from the EOS R seems soft.
Canon doest have the needed bandwidth so they're using some workaround to match the specs.
I started watching this video just after waking up and at first thought my eyes were blurry, but it never got any better.
@ its 1:40 am and watched it with my data pack over, just coz i had to wait for data cycle to refresh so i could upload all my stock photos to multiple sites..😁
Thankfully for me, ill be going for sony. Never considered any canon too seriously..
its a bad time to be a dedicated loyal canon shooter.
Canon continues mounting old non backi-lluminated sensors, so it must more electronically elaborate and amlify the images.
People switching back to EOS-R
th-cam.com/video/kWDJeAAfIdA/w-d-xo.html
This video is likely one of the best reviews of the EOS-R that I’ve seen so far. Thanks for the depth of this review.
Yep, it brings out a lot of flaws of the camera that others missed.
But also ignores alot of great things like the automatic backup via wifi to your phone.
HA HA HA, "Take a picture, take the card out, put another card in, take the same picture, super convenient..." :-) Too funny!
I laughed out loud at that!
3:24 Apparently the tree is more interesting than Chris's face. Those photo colors are nice, but wow the video is a letdown after the XT-3 last week.
Ziginox the XT-3 is not a full frame sensor
That on/off switch there... I don't get it... Why?
Some things we're not meant to understand.
Two hands needed to power up the camera? Haha. No thanks Canon.
@@DeusExAstra Ohh... now I get it 😂
Its the new standard. Everyone wants it.
My EOS R arrived today, and after some nervousness based on Jordan's video autofocus experience, I can happily report that for me its every bit as good as the 5D Mark IV even with adapted EF glass. My only gripes so far (other than the obvious spec disappointments) are:
1) Auto ISO is not possible in CLOG
2) Non-Canon EF-S glass doesn't auto-crop
3) The multi function touch bar is stupidly horrible idea. CANON, get rid of it! We need tactile buttons and direct access to ISO & WB
4) The rear dial is to far away from my thumb.
Been waiting on this one from you guys! Seriously great reviews from you two. =)
I'd love to know the sling bag Chris is using here around 10:10, looks really nice! can anyone help? thanks a lot!
15:41 "Hey guys, it's Jordan, the new Bond girl."
DPReview subscribers can't handle the sexiness!
At least you all got some sailing and Hawaii waterfalls in, need another Hawaii vacation on another camera launch. Feels like outdoors Ontario was orchestrating the nature strings as you were walking through there. 🌲🐻
video quality looks like 480p
on/off switch position, touch bar, "mode dial" ,different handling to DSLRs= and you say "ergonomically is fantastic at 21:56"?
Rado Tej Yes and you will need to hit that on/off switch a lot with that battery life.
If you want FF mirrorless, just get an A7iii. You wont regret it.
And something else:
I'd like to see you guys do a side by side comparison of some mirrorless cameras for continuous eye autofocus and include the G85. In my experience it works fantastic even with multiple people in the frame. (the face detect focus of the G85 focuses on the closer eye)
Any chance of that happening?
Cheers from Germany 🙂
Just got mine as a first camera. It was either this or the 4 year old 5DSR. I've effectively placed my faith in Canons software engineerings.
Good that I hadn't seen this review when I was buying this camera a year before. But now (and a year before) many issues that were in this video are fixed with new firmware and eye af works pretty good and with servo af.
@Jordan How many drinks has Chris had on the segment that started at 10:09? hahaha
Thank you Chris and Jordan. Very good and very honest review, as usual.
There is some weird color fringing in the highlights and shadows at times, purple to blue/cyan and some weird yellows... is it just me?
That's just how EF-S glass rolls, it seems.
Great and honest review! Was waiting for it!
This is what we deserve an honest review, without holding back or covering for the companies like many others youtube channels are doing.
What is happening on the water next to Chris's arm at 11:51? Some sort of video artifact?
Great review, Chris and Jordan.
And Stephan Eckert for his valuable contribution, too.
I am shooting in low light and high iso and need to be on silent shutter. Are the rolling shutter issues any better with the firmware update? I think you can now do multishots
Why did u use 17-55 EFS? You could use a full frame 16-35. The crop doesn’t require or benefit from efs over ef! Doesn’t mitigate the crop issue.
0:20 you really know it's 5:45am when the guy is wearing his t-shirt inside out :DDD
It is heavy and feels nice in hand. How about using it for weight lifting? And you can adapt some big old heavy glas too!
You still one of the best reviewers.
3fps? :D rofl. Not bad? my 350D had 3fps - 2005. Im wondering why most of the reviews from Hawaii are so... pretty for Canon?
They sent him to Hawaii so he wouldn't constantly nag about the cold Canadian weather.
West Senkovec After seeing this review. Where do you think they will send them next?
😂
I have no idea how they managed to do that
The On Off switchbhas always been on the Left in Pro Bodies. Also the Mode Dial too. I dont understand how thats a Flaw? Considering they gave the Mode Dial to right. Should be half thankful haha.
why does the video look so soft????
Mako Sports best color science and video focus. And you know it.
Mako Sports so go enjoy your Sony camera. Just as I enjoy my Canon colors and never feel the need to a look at other Camera reviews.
Mako Sports because it’s a Canon review. I love Canon colors and durability standard enough not to ever watch a Sony review. All I need to know is that Sony makes their cameras in China.
I know canon footage always tend to be really soft, but this one for some reason seemed way too soft, even for canon... just saying
15:41 Nice work if you can get it. Thanks for a full and well balanced review.
nice camera, why only on/ff on the left side
My first SLR camera, back in the summer of '70, was the Canon FT QL and came with a Canon 50mm f1.4 with the aperture ring near the front edge of the lens, so the 'new' Canon lens design isn't so new.
Perfect review, you guys are amazing!
Are those images right after the shots edited or it came right out of the camera?
The sensor does appear behind in DR and TR. Hard for us to tell exactly how much. About 1EV?
Lovely review. DP's best so far.
It’s here!!!
DSLR Video Shooter And it’s a massive disappointment.
SWEET! 🎥🎞📽🤗🤓
its here and it sucks...... finished it for you
Yeah, it doesn't seem like a camera made for us.
Great video! cant wait for mine to arrive! Already pre-ordered it! Life is great! Thank you God!
Loved your work-around idea for the single card slot! LOLOL!
I'm sooooooo in love with this camera!!
My two favorite Canadians, great review thanks!
Great video guys and totally fair in my opinion! The video specs are really sad to hear about. XT3 crushes it for much less money and even less of a crop! ;)
and the m50
It is the best first full frame mirrorless camera iteration from Canon, a very good start. For me as a Canon photographer, is a must have, not that I can afford it, but nice to dream about. In fact, it is a promise for the things to come. I won't compare it with anything, but Canon products. So, I am content.
BTW, regarding the touch control that simulate a slide and two buttons, it is good to eliminate the mechanical problems real buttons develops in time. But I think only one slide is enough right now.
LOL. It's a overpriced Turd
Nice fair review guys. 👍🏻
Yes - you got to love the whispering anytime they said anything negative - Hilarious
They're Canadian. It's in their blood.
I was ready to buy one tonight...but....after this review, there I go again to think of Sony Aiii (and Panasonic 4/3) as a better option for the future ahead!!
Pretty much same conclusion I had. The processing power isn't there to actually make this a camera worth 2300 USD. Since it's pretty much the same processing power they had in their M50 witch they price at 800 USD...
nice - honest review i feel the same about the canon for now they have some work to do...
Rodrick HD so go for the Sony and who cares.
Sachin Majotra that’s right.
Really? No one's gonna mention how beautiful the photos of that bride are starting at 1:52? Great job with those shots, absolutely stunning.
@@villagranvicent I know right? 95% of the comments are just complaining about the camera, yet I couldn't seem to find a single person comment about those beautiful shots. Definitely some of my favorite shots Chris has done.
You sold your gear before actually testing the new camera ? That's one hell of a risky move you did here. no matter the brand.
Julian Croot ... if you want a fullframe mirrorless to film with, maybe look at Sony?
I figured it was riskier to hang on to the 5DIv, in resale value terms.. And I was right.... The following week is trade in value dropped like a stone.
The Sony is without doubt a better camera, but this is to be used as a B camera with my Canon C200, so switching systems would be a major hassle and cost for me.
Totally agree though, most people should get a Sony.
Mistake. shouldve waited for the Pro R. Good Luck to u tho
You can easily adapt your glass to Sony though.
Chris: Have you had the chance to "re-review" the camera after the firmware updates?
OMG you guys shot this in my backyard , it would have been great to bump into you guys here on West Maui.
Just about every clip has been at one of my locations we often shoot weddings at or go surfing. Not too sure
about this Canon EOS R but I hope you enjoyed your time on the island. cheers!
Worth the wait; good review. Mark 2 by Christmas eh! ;) Thanks guys.
Is that problem of autofocus or the lenses? I found some video footage is so soft like out of focus
Also, the AF sometimes has pulses in the video....
Well, I'm glad I went with X-T3 instead of waiting for this.
Thank you for this thorough unbiased review!
