This is so true on so many levels. I feel like society conditions the majors of people to believe that it is the ultimate goal to just get a stable job. Everybody isn’t conditioned like that. You have people that are head strong and need to become entrepreneurs or start their own business. Then you have people that just need to be employed and need a boss. The 9-5 keeps you where you’re at and it’s a continuous cycle

Same thing here...finished 13th out of 310, I wasn't even trying to be at the top of the class. Achieving FI and semi-retirement came so much sooner than I expected as well. It is amazing what happens when you put laser focus on what you want. Just keep your head down and focus on your goals and you seem to reach them sooner than you think. It reminds of that saying "And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it."

    • @BeatTheBush

Here's what im getting from the video:
    1. Youre thinking of escaping because youre tired and not enjoying it (hate your job), focus on doing something you enjoy during your free time that involves self-improvement (kaizen) or healthy habits that keeps you moving toward that general direction.
    2. Opportunities will arise that allows you to enter semi-retirement of still working but being less tired.
    3. You realize that everything happens if you just keep the end in mind, enjoying the process without being overly intricate. And sometimes, you dont need to hit that goal you originally set (like having $500k).

Energy is a very valuable resource, you need to be wise with what you expend it throughout the day.

There's another reason why most employees are tired that you did not mention.
I've been in upper management for decades. That means I work side-by-side with owners. Even leading the company meetings.
In every single business I've worked in. For a variety of reasons. Every-single-one-of-them was struggling to make profits at some point. So the owners do things to add more "efficiency" to the workers.
FYI. "Efficiency" is the secret code for: "We're in trouble. We need to push our employees harder. We need to do whatever we can to add more hours to the day."
Another code for a company in trouble is: "We wear many hats here".
This is why most employees are so tired. Because the company they work for is making them do the jobs of more than one person. Because the company's business plan does not work any longer. And they're trying to FORCE it to work, by trying to add more hours to the day. Which we all know is impossible.
99% of business do not work, and should not be in business. If you see these signs...get out, or you'll sink with the slowly sinking ship. And run yourself ragged in the process trying to keep it afloat.

    • @BeatTheBush

I started thinking about early retirement at age 27....even though i was in the throes of raising a family and being married...did so at age 54. All I can say is...sock away 20 to 33% of your income....hide from taxes using the 401k and HSA (make yourself look poor on paper!!!)....and most importantly you SHOULD HAVE an outlet set up whereby you can "make some money" after retirement...for me it was E-Bay Selling and Stock trading-investing. Got to have something financially to do with your time, to create a ultra slow burn rate on your assets....even if 5 days a week are play days!!!

They do not call it the rat race for no reason. I bought my first house at age 25 after grad school..all cash...it was really not in good shape, and promptly retired! Bought additional properties and got a roommate for extra income. While all my buddies were busy slaving away in the corporate salt mines, I was having the time of my life waking up to coffee, being time rich and figuring creative new ways to generate more streams of passive income. When the streams were big enough about 7 years later, decided to see the world. I've been to all sorts of crazy and exotic places on this planet until I tired of travel. I would NEVER have enjoyed all these experiences had I stayed in the rat race. Best thing I ever did :)

I quit my job for 9 months to work on personal projects. Though I worked longer and harder I had more energy. It was a combination of more enjoyment in what I am doing, being able to work at a pace that was comfortable, getting enough sleep, and no commute. I think salaries are by design to keep you stuck at your desk but I think the fatigue is a side effect of the grind and not necessarily by design. It's a consequence of the pressures and threats to our health working brings.

I worry most about health insurance. The individual marketplace is much too expensive. In theory I can retire in like 5 years, due to low personal expenses (I’m 29). But the problem is, insurance.

I think a mistake many young people, including me, make is that we want our life to be devoted to something meaningful and fulfilling. Which is a great ambition, but if you then tie your source of income to that desire, you''ll only end up poor and frustrated.
It's easier to make money with meaningless nonsense than to make money with meaningful purposeful things. If you create multiple sources of income with meaningless nonsense you end up with time and resources to devote to what you find meaningful. Keeping these two goals separate gives you way more freedom and flexibility to orient your life around.

Just no willpower to do anything different, though I've had a few ideas that I've wanted to work on. I don't have kids but I do have a (very manageable) mortgage, so that stability is really important to me.

I probably work 20 hours a week at my 9-5 but between when my alarm goes off and I zone out trying to wake up earlier than my body wants to (and it's not even that early) and when I get home from my daily commute, it takes me about 50 to 55 hours a week to do those 20 hours of work.
