- I never used to be very frugal, much more so now than before. There were times where I did not understand as such and it is such a contrast to think of each instance when that happened. The mentality is such that I would profusely refuse the money saving wave. Yes, me! Years later and much learning after, I have changed myself and feel I have a better understanding of the reasons behind being frugal. I am sharing these with you to help in your journey as well.

Being frugal is not just about saving money. For me, its a way to live, renewing your mind, stewardship.
Its satisfying to really use up what you buy.
Exactly.....we live in a horribly wasteful society and our kids (if not taught differently) are only getting worse at it!!
My colleagues give me a bad rap cuz I eat the same thing for lunch every day. I’m very much a creature of habit and value consistency, and feel it saves time, energy and perhaps on some level reduces stress/anxiety by not having to think/decide WHAT to get when the choice is already made. I also do so for health reasons....when I find something that is relatively healthy, that tastes good and doesn’t cause any gastro issues, I’m happy to eat the same thing every day! 👍🏼😜
For me it’s
Oatmeal and dried blueberries and water.
Just soak and let sit for 30min.
Lunch is about $2. My co workers pay $10-12.
And complain about not having any money.
I have always been insanely frugal because of my parents! None of my friends understand why I am the only one who drives a $900 car while they all have car loans!
I would recommend getting new friends, you might have heard they say your income is the average of your five best friends

Me too.....we NEVER buy a car new....it's always from the original owner via Craigslist, or the local news paper classified ads. Our current car (a 2002) we found on Craigslist from the actual "little old lady" and only had 17,000 "babied" miles on it! She paid all the depreciation on it from new....not us! ;-) Look around folks....they're out there!
I like this format better. It feels warmer and more personal. No need to spend precious time on editing. This is great enough. :D
I own the beat up--Frayed bathroom towels....They dry me up just fine...
Towels, they last forever. Unless you want a new color matching everything every season.

@@cherrytung So you intend to use each towel only once? Bacteria are everywhere. If you're really afraid of it then have separate towels for wiping your butt.
@@cherrytung Did you not read anything that guy actually said? He said to wash your towels every other day, and to hang them in such a way that they dry thoroughly. He also said to use a detergent with activated oxygen bleach to clean your towels properly. He never said anything about throwing out old towels at all. Good job picking and choosing information to support your own ill-founded point, though. The quotes and the appeal to authority are very nice.
I didn't realize your previous videos required much editing. This new format is fine, and I suspect will become effortless over time. I enjoy your videos in any case.
Editing time is not greatly reduced really with this format. This is more for better cadence and a more natural feel.
Editing style doesn't feel weird at all! Flows nicely and not a very noticeable difference from your normal videos.

I love this format. You seem more honest and less flashy. I also agree that when you learn something new, you think what you were doing before was wrong and you try the new thing. I found that being frugal is now what I prefer and does not take self discipline because I have a different mind set and do not want to buy as much as I used to.
Exactly. I think a bit of this change in mindset comes from learning the reasons why. But then not everyone is completely logical.

I'm a poor and frugal person who several months ago THREW AWAY several towels, and bought one $3 bright red and one $3 deep blue one. I feel pleasure over that purchase to this day! I like seeing my non-grungy, non-frayed, colorful towels in my bathroom multiple times per day. :-)
I love to be frugal. But I also love to replace things with more sustainable and minimalist way. Also the older I get functionality and quality have become important. I use flea markets to shop for items I don't intend to keep for long. For ex. fashion. I can easily find a trendy dress for a dollar or 2, wear it for the season and then donate it. For something I intend to invest in I do serious amount of research before buying it. And I try to find discount codes or coupons for everything lol.
Here's a question for you, why not keep everything you take into possession for as long as possible? It seems newness is a factor when trying to be fashionable.
BeatTheBush agreed, I’ve given so much away for free only to replace over and over. It would have been better not to buy, keep, or not replace. But shopping provides a dopamine surge!
@@BeatTheBush I have this (ocd) thing when it comes to things.. Say a towel doesn't feel good to me, then I will not use it. Most of the items I don't use anymore were gifts or something I got for free or bought a long time ago (15-20 yrs ago). Between that time I have grown up to be an adult who knows what she wants so instead of cluttering my space with items that don't sit right with me, I get rid of it and buy myself a towel that I LOVE and will use happily for years. I'm really frugal and picky when it comes to bringing new stuff into my life but I would rather have items that are made well, work and bring JOY to me when ever I use them. If I can't find a replacement that I LOVE then I will keep on using the not so good ones until I do. A new item has to always answer YES to the question "Would I bring it with me, if I'd move countries with only 2 suitcases". Items that I love will not get thrown away over a small hole. Fashion is a total waste of money but sometimes I feel a deep need to express myself through colors and textures of clothing and Flea market is my best option for that now.. Most of the time I love wearing my minimalist uniform :) Hope that clears my way of thinking a little.. Have good day!
@@19katsandcounting I used to love shopping and enjoyed having a collection or a stash of things but now I buy and keep only the things I absolutely LOVE! But I also donate whatever I don't use anymore so that I don't have to use my time maintaining, cleaning and storing them :) My time is my most valuable asset and I don't want to waste it on items I don't need or want. And I don't want to waste my time hobby shopping anymore either :)

Great video as always! Editing takes a ton of time. I would say, don't waste your time on it, time is a valuable commodity! I think the video is awesome.

Love this vid! I have the same not-wanting-to-eat-the-same-thing mindset. I'm frugal in general but I do spend quite a bit on eating out. Guess I should try to cook more and be less picky with food.
Think about this, un restaurants they use the same oil the whole day.
I only use my oil once.
They are not the cleanest.
That's why I Avoid going to restaurants. Also I can really Cook like Martha or Paula.
To me going to restaurants is a punishment.
Yes. It saves so much. Think about how much you spend on lunch everyday at work. If it's $10/day x 5 days that's $50/week. That's like a small monthly bill. I stopped eating out during the week when we bought a house and I can only I,whine how I've saved in that time. Plus the impact on health because it's harder to get healthy food at restaurants generally speaking.
There is your way of spending less. Find a way to be okay eating the same thing and not despise it.

I remembered a long time ago I was upset with my mom because I hated eating the same menu for lunch and dinner. Then life happens and I gained perspective. Most importantly, perspective on how dumb I was back then, still am today, and how important it is to continue learning.
There has to be a limit somewhere. One time my mom made 5 gallons of soup for our family of 5 and just kept taking container after container out of the freezer for weeks, it was horrible. Also one time she had a party and for weeks there were apples left over and that was the only thing to eat.

I like your stories. I have a version of myself that is similar to your "younger" and "older" self. I think you're right about it everyone changing at different times and because the fact we exposed to new things like the people in these 3 stories. I had similar exposure to these 3 stories but it happened a bit differently in my stories. What I've learned from it is that people will always find a way if they are out there seeking it which is a good life lesson to learn from.
Finding more optimal ways to live life is great. I probably have a lot of changes to do before I really settle.

I knew someone who took the ketchup packets from fast food places to save for his bike rides. He used them in place of sports gels and goos because they have sugar and salt.
Interesting. That sounds like it will work! Those glucose chews are very expensive.

In general I agree with your mindset and it is very good habit to be frugal but as you age, time also becomes an equally important commodity as money. In fact more than money because you will never get it back like money. You can always work or find other ways to get more money, but not so with time. So I am at the point of my life that I have enough money to enjoy life. Looks like time may be running out so I need to practice frugality with time. Any comment or advise from the bush? P.S. I have been frugal with money all my life.

I'm happy with either format. The no edit format gives it a podcast feel which is nice, but I never noticed that you'd edit after every other sentence to be honest. Whatever is easier for you to do I say.
Good. I try to edit to make it seem that way but not relying on editing is better.

I like you both ways, edited or not! My grandma saved a teaspoon of peas...she never threw away food because she lived through the Depression. I would laugh at her. At 74 I am blessed because I have never been hungry, but like her, I save a teaspoon of peas.
You’ve been doing so much TH-cam that your vocal is almost production-ready. Couldn’t tell much difference, in fact, liked it.
Francis, great video. You often talk about thinking deeper about life and philosophy. It would be great if you made some videos about that. What matters most to you in life. What are you doing with your awesome freedom. What do you think most people are missing in life by being more normal or typical? Less editing is good and less effort for you.
It might be purposeful for me to show this indeed. In a way, I try to show this across my videos and I probably answered all of those across a few key videos I already made.
You definitely have touched on it but I think it isn't obvious to some viewers. You have certainly possess wisdom and it would just be nice to hear more of it. At the end of the day saving money is just a means to an end. Just a tip of a much greater iceberg. Feels prudent to devote some resources to discussing the greater portion that lies beneath. Just my opinion.

From one hermit crab to another: that is not a frugal microphone. - Love your logical plushies!
1. No holes in towels. They hurt my esthetics.
2. With liquids it's extremely unhygienic. But the cookies coming with espresso where I live make a good save. During travel or during waiting you often don't want a whole package of cookies. If you buy them you eat them. But if you have packages of only one or two cookies, you eat just one package and that often suffices.

I've been using the same kitchen handtowels for 25 years, the prints are faded but I don't have anyone I need to impress.
True story
I worked on the freeways for 27yrs.
People who work on the freeways find a lot of stuff.
Money. Cell phones. Wallets. You name it, we find it.
I can’t count how many wallets and iPhones I returned to their owners.
One time I was walking on the side is the road and I found a homeless camp. Looked like they just spent one nite and left. They left behind an expensive blanket. I took it back to the yard and sprayed it down with a hose. I took it to the laundromat and cleaned it. That blanket is now on my bed. I have found many many items on the freeways that I have used for years.

I am somewhat frugal. I had some frugal mentors that invested their money into real estate. I decided to observe and learn. I love a great deal. I buy stylish clothes from resale stores. Plan my menus, drive a 13 year old car and buy jewelry from pawn shops. I also own 13 houses free and clear. All this as a result of my frugality and God's favor on my life. I enjoy your channel.

Here's another story to make you frugal: My uncle made a six-figure income for over 50 years. He died penniless. He made 15-25k a month and his checking account was overdrawn every month. He never saved anything. When he died he still owed 20k on his house and his kids lost it because they didn't have enough money to cover that loan.
Why didn't they just sell the house since there was equity already in the house?
@@jay_murs4508 Same reason why they couldn't cover the 20k loan.
In a way, your uncle did it correctly because he spent everything he earned when he died. Usually having kids means they want to leave something to them so that is not correct in that sense. Also, it depends if he enjoyed working 50 years or was just in the rat race.

I'm really learning a lot from your vlog! I've recommended it to several people already but this one wasn't that good. You asked so I'm telling lol! I don't want to empty ketchup packets into bottles. To me that is a time consuming activity that makes no sense when I can go to the salvage grocer and buy a bottle for .25. I also don't want to use rags for towels. Sure they will both dry you but one feels good and one doesn't. I buy my towels at yard sales for dirt cheap. What I've quit doing is caring about things matching. I buy mismatched sheets, towels, and other things at yard sales or thrift stores. OR get them for free. I literally got my bedding for my guest bed out of a free bin at a thrift store. It wasn't a set and it doesn't match exactly but looks fine. Never had a neg comment from guests. I get the point that you need to change your thinking and you don't have to literally do the examples you gave, I just don't think they were that great examples, but I love your channel and it's fast becoming my favorite! Frugality is a way of thinking and a lifestyle. Even if I had more money than I could ever spend, I'd still be frugal and I'd give more away to those really in need.

True story, my grandfather owned a 80's VW Rabbit 4 spd (diesel of course) and when he got within 1/8th of a mile or so of his home he would turn the engine off and let the car roll into the driveway. His home had a attached garage, but no automatic opener. When he wanted to garage the car he would open the door and then push the car into the garage rather than waste fuel starting it.
Chris, When my father was driving and looked ahead and saw the light was red, he took his foot off the gas petal and let the car coast up to the corner. The result was the car moved at a snails pace. The cars behind him did not like it. He did not care. He was saving gas. He had many frugal habits. In his old age he rented very dumpy apartments because they were the cheapest. After he died I found out that over the years he had purchased many treasury bonds. They were divided between his children. For quite a number of years I benefited from the interest they produced. My last bond matures this year. I am grateful to have received this gift.
@@patriciafisher3108 wow that is frugal.. you might have my family stories beat! I have an uncle who when I was a kid we would visit and exchange Christmas gifts. My uncle was a lawyer and he would often attend seminars and other travel related events. When Christmas came around you'd get these freebies as Christmas gifts.. a koozie, t-shirt, or even sometimes a calendar that was already written in, all with logos and branding on them of what he attended. I remember that used to drive my mother crazy at how cheap he was! haha Keep in mind he was a lawyer working in Atlanta so we all knew he had money.
Question is... how much gas does that save? Hmmm... pushing the car in. I suppose it could be a nice workout?
My son got an awesome New furniture set, minus the dresser.
Now, want New dresser.
IT is expensive, my mom bought it.
Now. Want my little 3 year old have a big girl bedroom.
Mind you got my house less than 2 Years ago, still need furniture and things.
The more furniture you buy, the more stuff you need to move if you move.
hahahahaha I love the non-editing. Although I think it means that your public speaking ability has improved to such a degree where you could present smoothly which is great! good work man. I like the authentic reality feel of non editing. I've worked on commercial sets and tv sets and it literally takes them 10 hours to shoot a 10min section for a tv show. Or an entire day of shooting for a 1mintue commercial.
Just soo much effort. I think non editing is fine for vlog style post. Its also encouraging for other potential content creators to see, which I like.

I really appreciate your stories on what had left an impression for you on being frugal. I like your older method of recording with a lot of edits though. It’s like a novel. There are many drafts and edits before it finally gets published. In your old method, your ideas are better collected, organized, and communicated for the audience. But I totally support you trying out this new way of recording. It might take some practice.... it’s definitely much more difficult to do....
That's funny about the towel. I don't mind using old towels myself, but when I had a houseguest recently, I went out and bought a few new ones so that they would be more comfortable. : )
I have one nice set of white, untouched, soft towels...just for guest. Me? My towel is many years old.
Whenever I'm about to buy something, I quickly ask myself if I'll simply be donating it to Goodwill in 3 years and how much I'll actually use it daily. It's all just stuff and it needs to serve a function now, because nothing is yours forever, not even your own body. We all die eventually and it just becomes somebody else's stuff or trash.

Non edit is fine. I don't care for the microphone? When I became frugal I cut back eating out by myself. Money is a little better now. On way home I think I will stop. As I get close I think, I'm just going to go home and eat.
You value time over need of eating different foods. Your views of what is important is life change. I've learned this too. My experience is the same as yours. I consider it to be a life hack to be cooking in bulk.
Of course if I will have perfect meals made for me without me needing to hire a chef I would be fine with it.
My sister worked for a doctor who didn't supply toilet paper in the washrooms.

Chopped format is harder to edit and undoubtedly takes more time to get content to us, so I like the single shot videos. Seems more genuine and natural too!
money saving tip!! never buy body wash.. use the drippings from the shampoo while showering.
Been doing this for quite a while. I get decent shampoo from the Dollar Tree store. A win win ( :
It seems some of the ingredients in the cheap shampoo is cancer causing. Will it really give you cancer? I don't know.

Here's one of mine. Right now I need a mitre saw. The one I want (good mid-range brand) is $240 at my local hardware. Aldi has one coming up which is $60. The reviews are very good, and it will be fine for what I need, but I'm a bit of a tool snob - part of me doesn't want to be seen with an Aldi power tool. I'm going to power through this and SAVE $180! 👍
Lol... don't want the brand. That's some peer pressure at work here. It's real.
I wanted a power drill....found one of those "last a lifetime" brands at Goodwill...for $6. I use it just a few times a year, but....a new one is at least 10x more expensive.
Also, the scratches and dings make me look like a real man...even though i'm just an overgrown boy.
