I watched almost all your job interview series before my interview with a multinational company of my dreams. I was up against internal candidates and I had no prior experience. This particular video helped me to focus on what I will do for the company instead of what I had done before. I painted a picture of their future with me even when I felt I was thrown off Balance. Guess what? I got the job! My recruiter let me know that she made up her mind to recruit me right away as she already could see herself working with me. She couldn't get me off her mind. This works. I watched this the day before an interview and applied ALL the advice. I passed the first interview and was called in for a second interview. I received a call a few days later and was offered a coaching position.
I think most of us go through that stage of when your looking for a job and life problems family, money etc bring you down into a depression situation, so really you end up finding it hard to feel good of yourself and your achievements because your at a low, but thanks, Andrew your amazing mate, you've opened my inner self worth and through your videos and tips freely given have more than just helped me in something which should be simple as a cv and an interview by making me really think in my achievements and not my wrong decisions in life and be true to yourself before I can sell myself. Andy, Andy, Andy!! I started watching you in August when I was going through some tough interviews. I had four interviews with a great company and they had even sent me an email asking for the email addresses of my references so they could actually shoot them an email to set up a phone call. Labor Day weekend passed so I gave them until Wednesday (this was a full week) before I did a follow up. The lady from the “Talent Department” actually did me the courtesy of a phone call where she told me they had hired within!!! I was heart broken and since I know she didn’t speak with references I honestly didn’t know what to believe. EVERYONE told me then it was the end of year and to just wait until first of year!! Well I continued studying with you, watched your video about how December was a PRIME MONTH, GUESS WHAT???? I SCORED ANOTHER EVEN GREATER POSITION BECAUSE OF YOU!!! You are magic, your fired my ass up to stick with it when others were being LAZY yet I was on a mission because “Andy said December was a GREAT time of year” And YOU WERE RIGHT! I knocked it out of park, slammed a home run and can’t thank you enough. I used the online book because my hard copy had not arrived and I think YOU ARE THE MAN!! I’m going to be the best employee this company has ever had and I owe it all to you. Offer letter signed, start my training (sales position) on January 14th. Thanks Andrew. Used the 2nd method in 3 straight interview rounds and bagged a job at a Fortune 200 client! It played a major role in reducing the interview time and the interviews were crisp and were to the point. I was able to steer the ship right from the beginning of the interview just because of how I answered this question. Will forever be grateful for you ❤
I am mostly happy with my job and my pay, received a healthy 35% pay increase when I started here 5 years ago. However, I was put in contact with another employer last week, who expressed interest in my skill set (engineer with some specialized certifications and training). The job posting for the new prospect indicates at least another 40% increase in my pay, when I land it. I used Andy's resume template and submitted it this weekend. About 8:30 Monday morning I received an email asking for a phone interview. So, before my phone interview today, I listened to Andy's tips and tricks for several hours. Sadly (lol) I wasn't able to use hardly any of them. The President, who I had the interview with, was so anxious to sell me on his company, that I could hardly get a word in edgewise. I'm happy to report that on Friday they are flying me to meet the team and said they would have a written offer for me. Now I need to brush up on negotiating. Thanks Andy!

The decision whether they will hire you is made within 5 seconds of meeting the interviewer(s). My mother was an interviewer and knew within seconds if the person had a chance. Her best advice was to think of an interview like it is a date. If there is no connection between you and the interviewer you have no chance.

When I saw the date of this video I wondered if I should watch, considering that it was made way before the whole Covid situation, which is why I need to find a new job. I see many comments made in the last few months, including Zoom interviews, so here I go. I dread this job search, first in many years.

Your unique perspective on handling interviews is something I haven't encountered before, and I'll definitely incorporate your advice into my approach. Recently, I graduated from nursing school and experienced my first professional interview. The situation was far from familiar; I found myself amidst four supervising nurses, which was quite overwhelming. I don't want to experience that level of intimidation again. Here are some of them, I have to admit I froze up on question #3. I felt like it was a trap lol. 1. Where do I see myself in five years? 2. Name a situation where I made the difference in a patient's visit. 3. If I can change something about myself what would it be? 4. What was my favorite/profound part of clinical? 5. What can I do to help implement safety to patient care.
The way this is summarized (past vs. their future) is such an excellent summary of what is missing from a successful interview. We get so stuck in STAR and telling our accomplishments. I put myself in a seat of an interviewer and if someone was talking about the future of the company I work I would listen. Thank you so much for this great insight!
STAR interview is the DUMBEST approach...If past predicts future HOW COME most mass murderers never HAD that history, do their rottenness in towns that NEVER had any history of such thing. Humans don't ALWAYS act the same, and that is why you have school shootings, movie theatre shootings. People going postal right now aren't having history they are REACTIVE to the environment, and no two environments in work culture are playing out the same. What you WANT is flexible, creative, ADAPTIVE folks picking up the cues and moving forward in our fast paced world. But HR are the laziest folks ever, imho, they don't know HOW to decipher what a contributing employee looks like. Recruiters find quality folks, HR refuses to HIRE those folks and you have companies DYING cuz they will NOT recognize talent.
I’ve been wanting to comment on this video for a while. I watched this video before a final stage job interview 5-6 months back, which included a meeting with the VP of Engineering. As soon as I met him I took out a mini book with a pen and asked “Do you mind if I take out my book to take some notes?” - I guess that was the first surprising impression. Then as soon as he started asking some of my projects (that required explanation) - I explained a short brief intro about it, followed with how I could use that project’s concept and experience to build something similar for them that they wanted. Simultaneously I kept taking rough notes (that I couldn’t even recognize). I even added the question at the end of “What does success look like to you after a year?” . And guess what, he didn’t have a concrete answer. I was applying to a web developer role, and he answered something that kept revolving around IT, Basic server management and etc, and even asked me if I would be okay with staying up over-time if required to do IT stuff. I agreed, and after the meeting was over as soon as I reach home I get a call from the HR with an offer! I can say that this DOES work if followed the RIGHT way, measuring the conversation and the depth of the question asked. Though I didn’t accept it, but this is tremendously great advice. Mind you, that different companies will have different hiring processes and they are looking culture fits, types of attitude. There was another great tip from a different video that I found useful of reading job descriptions on different roles that tells a lot on who works with who. Thanks Andrew! REQUEST: Could you please shorten the length of the videos and get to the point faster? Please leave the promotion of the books in a different video where you explain in depth about the topics. Be a visionary! Never thought of apply to jobs as engaging a whole bunch of the same skills as a very personable salesperson but totally makes sense! Sell the vision of what's greater if you hire me. I've totally used imagination in interviews where I got hired - creative chaos to bring more vibrancy.
Andy, thanks for the great videos. I love your ideas for questions, such as "in one year after you hire this person, what will that person have done/accomplished to know they are successful?" Personally, I would be stunningly impressed if I were the interviewer, but I have had interviews where that kind of a tough question throws them. And then I leave them feeling uncomfortable instead of thrilled with me. One question that often gets that response is, "What have you not heard from a candidate so far that you were hoping to hear?" The response I often get is, "That's a great question..." Well, indeed it IS a great question, and yet, they seem to stammer through an (unprepared) answer and feel awkward. I fear that few interviewers could answer the question about what does success look like in a year. I would bet, from my real-world experience, that few if any interviewer would have thought that through before listing the job or interviewing. They may like that I was able to confidently expose their own weakness -- and enjoy that I challenged them; or their egos might not be that strong, and then I end up rejected because they felt less than stunning as an interviewer. I have a few other questions that get me this response as well. Do you think there is something to be said for reading your interviewers? If they seem inexperienced (which is often the case for me because I'm a lifelong individual contributor, and thus not always in interviews with the seasoned execs.) I am SO experienced in job hunting and interviewing (not necessarily proud of that) that I literally critique their interview skills rather than worrying about mine. I don't tell them this, but I have experienced feeling more prepared and articulate than the interviewers. I think the best thing to do in this case is to NOT ask the tough questions, even though they should be considered a good thing. Choose to make THEM feel like the winner and the smart one for finding YOU, regardless of their lack of preparedness. I mean of course, if you still want the job. Thanks.
Excellent video. I've employed many of these tips in past job interviews and always landed the job. I always keep in mind that interviewing is a 2-way street: Applicants are also interviewing the employer to make sure that the job is a good fit. This also demonstrates an avid interest in the employer and the job. Also, be confident! Convey the attitude that you can do the job.
When you mentioned 'I don't care about them (the employer), I care about you' you got me :) I am preparing for some interviews in the coming period, I have finally dared to applied for C-suite roles, so it will be my first time sitting in front of executives. Yes, I am kind of nervous about that, but hopefully I am doing my homework and you are helping me with that. Thank you!

Love this question, absolutely nails it: If I or anyone were to take this job - a year from now, what specifically will the person have accomplished for you to know that it was successful? There's a lot of textbook basic questions like: Is this a new role or filling a vacancy? That's probably too generic, interviewer might be thinking "how does this relate, exactly?" "new! ok what else you got about the success of this role specifically?" or "... vacancy, but I'll leave it at that. thanks for asking though (not really)"

I never thought about asking the interviewer that question. It makes so much sense when you think about it. They never ask you about how would you handle a situation like (this) and it's amazing because it's true they always seem to be wondering more about your past. I think it's because it's part of their "let's ask this question to disqualify this person quickly" instead of "let's check and see how much this person can help the company. They do it backwards in my way of thinking. But also, on the other hand most interviewees don't realize that both sides are interviewing each other. For example, I would be interviewing the interviewer to see if I want to really work for them. I want to know what "They" can offer me. I know what I can offer then and I want to know if it evens out for the both of us.

I worked as freelancers and it was really difficult to get job because I am not from top tier universities and I don't like doing job which I am not passionate about. I am from developing country and I never felt comfortable in work culture here. I started applying for jobs in Europe as I have masters degree from good university in The Netherlands. I think all of those concepts are very important. Yet almost always I was hired because the interviewer liked me more than the other applicants. Humor works.
I've been to a few job interviews lately. They seemed really impressed with my answers to their questions but the next day I always seem to get an email that says sorry but we've hired someone else. People tend to hire other people who are like them. And I've yet to meet a hiring person who reflects my personality. You can have all the job qualifications you want, but unless you match the hiring person in personality you won't get hired. It's in our nature. It's how we make friends.

Absolutely this! I just interviewed for (and landed) a new job and when I left I was talking to my husband and I told him it felt less like a job interview and more like a will you fit in with the office interview.

must admit . . . . . at 17:00 what Andrew is describing is spot on perspective. I was answering exactly this type of historical,behavioral probing by the whse GM. i replied with my background story answering to their probing. this same context was repeated by another manager in the interview. finally the 3rd manager flipped the atmosphere by describing the purpose of this questioning. the prior person in this position i was advocating for had continuously failed the responsibilities in question. Where Andrew nailed it was drawing this line of questioning (which seems baseless as he explained) to the bigger picture where i am pushing my strengths into their concerns where they can see me supporting these demonstrative needs. I failed to do this aptly enough. game over. that was a good call by Andrew starting at 17:00.

Hi, I’m sure these types of notes will never get old but I fully believe this tip brought me over the finish line to my new job. They were immediately interested from the get-go of my first interview which was a great feeling. The better pay and knowledge they fully believe in me to do the job doesn’t hurt either. I used the momentum gained in my first interview to, I believe, fully land it and talk about how I could be a great asset in the company for them in the future with all of the team members I will be working with (both interviews were more behavioral). Somehow, this should have seemed like such a no brainer but in the end, I think it was this ability to be forward thinking that also made me confident in the interview process. I do have 2 questions- 1. How do I successfully take this momentum and carry it into the position starting from Day 1? 2. Does where you sit in an interview matter? As an example, my first interview with this company took place in a decent sized conference room and I set at the head of the table and the two interviewers sat further down. Fast forward to second interview and a total of 6 people, I tried to accommodate everyone by sitting in the middle of the table and they asked me to sit once again at the head of the table. I’m guessing I was memorable in that regard?!
Brendan Grace great to hear! On 1, get as much of a head start going into day 1 by getting them to get you all the material you need in advance and so forth. On 2, it sometimes matters where you sit in the room, but this is all dependent on room size and furniture configuration. Don’t sweat this right now.

Just came across your channel and immediately subscribed. Last year I interviewed with a great company made it to the third out of four rounds, including a one hour test (which included essays, spelling, and math) for HR position. I was told I would hear back within the week but did not. I called in spoke with the person I interviewed with last who would also be my supervisor. He said they decided to go with someone else. I asked if there was anything I should brush up on that would have given me better chance. He said no and encouraged me to apply again to future opportunities. Several months later I applied for a receptionist position made it to first round phone interview but not even called back. I know this is lengthy, but not getting the HR job really took the wind out of my sails. It's been difficult to bounce back. Any suggestions?

Hey Andrew, absolutely love your videos! They’re so informative! I do have some reservation about the number one question you ask the interviewer “If I was to take this job, a year from now what specifically will the person have accomplished for you to know that it was successful” - my gut feeling says that question is too bold, too overconfident. Why would an interviewer reveal their cards on what they’re looking for specifically to be successful? Could you be putting them in an awkward position expecting them to answer a question like that? I dunno. I’d be too nervous to ask a question like that. Maybe it’s because I lack confidence. I could be wrong, would love to have your feedback. Thanks for your videos.
Excellent approaches to responding to questions and about being prepared in an executive position. In my experience, for some of the companies I have interviewed with, many of those questions/ answers are volunteered BEFORE the interview begins. As an Executive candidate, often I am given a full tour of facilities, introduction to various departments, and given an thorough explanation of how the executive position would be best served. What do you ask if the employer has already discussed and volunteered many of the scenarios, prior to the interview?
The advice to make sure more time is spent on the future rather than the past. This was the best advice!!!! I was selected above all other candidates and I believe this was one of the reasons. Thank you

Hello: You've been a great help to me and I usually get the job even though I'm older. The problem I face is that employers aren't honest about the position and it seems they don't actually know the dynamics of their company. Therefore, I can't make an informed decision and am again disappointed. I have been candid with the employer and always mention my "happiness factor". Employers are aghast when a potential employee lies to them yet they seem to think it's ok when they do it. I feel trapped in a horrible situation and am again looking after just six months. What can I do differently in an interview to ensure I am getting the facts?

behavioural interview is based on the principle that past beh can accurately predict future beh. one of the most statistically valid ways to predict job performance ;) but point taken

If the interviewer says "Thank you so much, it was great talking to you. I look forward to talking with you again", would you say that's a positive sign or them just being nice? 🙏 Also, what does it mean when the interviewer doesn't end the interview and practically waits for you to end it?? The interviewer literally refused to end it. I interviewed the other day and I was waiting for her to end it and so, I just kept asking questions. She was very nice and answered all of my questions fully.
Fantastic question. If you’re not sure, ALWAYS ask for clarification. Or, ask what specifically do they want to know. It’s always ok to ask clarifying questions in an interview!

My father in law gave me this great question to ask at an interview. It really impresses and sets you up for success. "A year from now, I want you to look back on your decision to hire me and be happy that you made that decision. What could I do during the first year of work to make sure that happens."

@andrewlacivita I just had a great -knocked it out the park- phone interview a few hours ago and I used that question. The interviewer and possible new boss said, “I really really like that question. Everyone should ask that.” Sure enough I got a second interview and she told me there was nothing holding her back from hiring me so far. Wow, I can’t tell you how much of a weight off my shoulders to know she doesn’t have any cons. Really good information. I've failed my last 2 interviews. I'm not a good story teller and I when I clock off work, I typically leave work at work. Your theory of creating a imagination trumps Reality.

I like this video. I figured out what it is that I want to do. I've been a cashier, a bagger, maintenance, and I tried to be a team member, but I need to change careers. I graduated from college with a bachelors degree in business administration. I want to find an office job, or desk job. Something that has to do with business. Again I like this video.

I dont think they ask open ended questions because they are lazy. I think they ask to get an overview, and also to see how you handle an open ended question. I would only think it was them being lazy if that was the ONLY question(s) they asked. Edited to add: However I love your videos! Thanks for making them available to us.

I watched almost all your job interview series before my interview with a multinational company of my dreams. I was up against internal candidates and I had no prior experience. Andy, Andy, Andy!! I started watching you in August when I was going through some tough interviews. I had four interviews with a great company and they had even sent me an email asking for the email addresses of my references so they could actually shoot them an email to set up a phone call. Labor Day weekend passed so I gave them until Wednesday (this was a full week) before I did a follow up. The lady from the “Talent Department” actually did me the courtesy of a phone call where she told me they had hired within!!! I was heart broken and since I know she didn’t speak with references I honestly didn’t know what to believe. EVERYONE told me then it was the end of year and to just wait until first of year!! Well I continued studying with you, watched your video about how December was a PRIME MONTH, GUESS WHAT????

I am mostly happy with my job and my pay, received a healthy 35% pay increase when I started here 5 years ago. However, I was put in contact with another employer last week, who expressed interest in my skill set (engineer with some specialized certifications and training). The job posting for the new prospect indicates at least another 40% increase in my pay, when I land it. I used Andy's resume template and submitted it this weekend. About 8:30 Monday morning I received an email asking for a phone interview. So, before my phone interview today, I listened to Andy's tips and tricks for several hours. Sadly (lol) I wasn't able to use hardly any of them. The President, who I had the interview with, was so anxious to sell me on his company, that I could hardly get a word in edgewise. I'm happy to report that on Friday they are flying me to meet the team and said they would have a written offer for me. Now I need to brush up on negotiating. Thanks Andy!

The decision whether they will hire you is made within 5 seconds of meeting the interviewer(s). My mother was an interviewer and knew within seconds if the person had a chance. Her best advice was to think of an interview like it is a date. If there is no connection between you and the interviewer you have no chance.

Your unique perspective on handling interviews is something I haven't encountered before, and I'll definitely incorporate your advice into my approach. Recently, I graduated from nursing school and experienced my first professional interview. The situation was far from familiar; I found myself amidst four supervising nurses, which was quite overwhelming. I don't want to experience that level of intimidation again. Here are some of them, I have to admit I froze up on question #3. I felt like it was a trap lol.
1. Where do I see myself in five years?
2. Name a situation where I made the difference in a patient's visit.
3. If I can change something about myself what would it be?
4. What was my favorite/profound part of clinical?
5. What can I do to help implement safety to patient care.
The way this is summarized (past vs. their future) is such an excellent summary of what is missing from a successful interview. We get so stuck in STAR and telling our accomplishments. I put myself in a seat of an interviewer and if someone was talking about the future of the company I work I would listen. Thank you so much for this great insight!

STAR interview is the DUMBEST approach...If past predicts future HOW COME most mass murderers never HAD that history, do their rottenness in towns that NEVER had any history of such thing. Humans don't ALWAYS act the same, and that is why you have school shootings, movie theatre shootings. People going postal right now aren't having history they are REACTIVE to the environment, and no two environments in work culture are playing out the same. What you WANT is flexible, creative, ADAPTIVE folks picking up the cues and moving forward in our fast paced world. But HR are the laziest folks ever, imho, they don't know HOW to decipher what a contributing employee looks like. Recruiters find quality folks, HR refuses to HIRE those folks and you have companies DYING cuz they will NOT recognize talent.
I’ve been wanting to comment on this video for a while. I watched this video before a final stage job interview 5-6 months back, which included a meeting with the VP of Engineering. As soon as I met him I took out a mini book with a pen and asked “Do you mind if I take out my book to take some notes?” - I guess that was the first surprising impression.
Then as soon as he started asking some of my projects (that required explanation) - I explained a short brief intro about it, followed with how I could use that project’s concept and experience to build something similar for them that they wanted.
Simultaneously I kept taking rough notes (that I couldn’t even recognize).
I even added the question at the end of “What does success look like to you after a year?” . And guess what, he didn’t have a concrete answer. I was applying to a web developer role, and he answered something that kept revolving around IT, Basic server management and etc, and even asked me if I would be okay with staying up over-time if required to do IT stuff. I agreed, and after the meeting was over as soon as I reach home I get a call from the HR with an offer!
I can say that this DOES work if followed the RIGHT way, measuring the conversation and the depth of the question asked.
Though I didn’t accept it, but this is tremendously great advice. Mind you, that different companies will have different hiring processes and they are looking culture fits, types of attitude.
There was another great tip from a different video that I found useful of reading job descriptions on different roles that tells a lot on who works with who.

Andy, thanks for the great videos. I love your ideas for questions, such as "in one year after you hire this person, what will that person have done/accomplished to know they are successful?"
Personally, I would be stunningly impressed if I were the interviewer, but I have had interviews where that kind of a tough question throws them. And then I leave them feeling uncomfortable instead of thrilled with me.
One question that often gets that response is, "What have you not heard from a candidate so far that you were hoping to hear?" The response I often get is, "That's a great question..." Well, indeed it IS a great question, and yet, they seem to stammer through an (unprepared) answer and feel awkward.
I fear that few interviewers could answer the question about what does success look like in a year. I would bet, from my real-world experience, that few if any interviewer would have thought that through before listing the job or interviewing. They may like that I was able to confidently expose their own weakness -- and enjoy that I challenged them; or their egos might not be that strong, and then I end up rejected because they felt less than stunning as an interviewer.
I have a few other questions that get me this response as well. Do you think there is something to be said for reading your interviewers? If they seem inexperienced (which is often the case for me because I'm a lifelong individual contributor, and thus not always in interviews with the seasoned execs.)
I am SO experienced in job hunting and interviewing (not necessarily proud of that) that I literally critique their interview skills rather than worrying about mine. I don't tell them this, but I have experienced feeling more prepared and articulate than the interviewers. I think the best thing to do in this case is to NOT ask the tough questions, even though they should be considered a good thing. Choose to make THEM feel like the winner and the smart one for finding YOU, regardless of their lack of preparedness. I mean of course, if you still want the job.

Excellent video. I've employed many of these tips in past job interviews and always landed the job. I always keep in mind that interviewing is a 2-way street: Applicants are also interviewing the employer to make sure that the job is a good fit. This also demonstrates an avid interest in the employer and the job. Also, be confident! Convey the attitude that you can do the job.
When you mentioned 'I don't care about them (the employer), I care about you' you got me :) I am preparing for some interviews in the coming period, I have finally dared to applied for C-suite roles, so it will be my first time sitting in front of executives. There's a lot of textbook basic questions like: Is this a new role or filling a vacancy?
That's probably too generic, interviewer might be thinking "how does this relate, exactly?"

I never thought about asking the interviewer that question. It makes so much sense when you think about it. They never ask you about how would you handle a situation like (this) and it's amazing because it's true they always seem to be wondering more about your past. I think it's because it's part of their "let's ask this question to disqualify this person quickly" instead of "let's check and see how much this person can help the company. They do it backwards in my way of thinking. But also, on the other hand most interviewees don't realize that both sides are interviewing each other. For example, I would be interviewing the interviewer to see if I want to really work for them. I want to know what "They" can offer me. I know what I can offer then and I want to know if it evens out for the both of us.

I worked as freelancers and it was really difficult to get job because I am not from top tier universities and I don't like doing job which I am not passionate about. I agree with you that gaining 'control' of the interview is important.
I've been to a few job interviews lately. They seemed really impressed with my answers to their questions but the next day I always seem to get an email that says sorry but we've hired someone else. People tend to hire other people who are like them. And I've yet to meet a hiring person who reflects my personality. You can have all the job qualifications you want, but unless you match the hiring person in personality you won't get hired. It's in our nature. It's how we make friends.

Absolutely this! I just interviewed for (and landed) a new job and when I left I was talking to my husband and I told him it felt less like a job interview and more like a will you fit in with the office interview.

must admit . . . . . at 17:00 what Andrew is describing is spot on perspective. I was answering exactly this type of historical,behavioral probing by the whse GM. i replied with my background story answering to their probing. this same context was repeated by another manager in the interview. finally the 3rd manager flipped the atmosphere by describing the purpose of this questioning. the prior person in this position i was advocating for had continuously failed the responsibilities in question. Where Andrew nailed it was drawing this line of questioning (which seems baseless as he explained) to the bigger picture where i am pushing my strengths into their concerns where they can see me supporting these demonstrative needs. I failed to do this aptly enough. game over. that was a good call by Andrew starting at 17:00.

Hi, I’m sure these types of notes will never get old but I fully believe this tip brought me over the finish line to my new job. They were immediately interested from the get-go of my first interview which was a great feeling. The better pay and knowledge they fully believe in me to do the job doesn’t hurt either.
I used the momentum gained in my first interview to, I believe, fully land it and talk about how I could be a great asset in the company for them in the future with all of the team members I will be working with (both interviews were more behavioral). Somehow, this should have seemed like such a no brainer but in the end, I think it was this ability to be forward thinking that also made me confident in the interview process.
I do have 2 questions-
1. How do I successfully take this momentum and carry it into the position starting from Day 1?
2. Does where you sit in an interview matter? As an example, my first interview with this company took place in a decent sized conference room and I set at the head of the table and the two interviewers sat further down. Fast forward to second interview and a total of 6 people, I tried to accommodate everyone by sitting in the middle of the table and they asked me to sit once again at the head of the table. I’m guessing I was memorable in that regard?!
Brendan Grace great to hear! On 1, get as much of a head start going into day 1 by getting them to get you all the material you need in advance and so forth. Just came across your channel and immediately subscribed. Last year I interviewed with a great company made it to the third out of four rounds, including a one hour test (which included essays, spelling, and math) for HR position. I was told I would hear back within the week but did not. I called in spoke with the person I interviewed with last who would also be my supervisor. He said they decided to go with someone else. I asked if there was anything I should brush up on that would have given me better chance. He said no and encouraged me to apply again to future opportunities.
Several months later I applied for a receptionist position made it to first round phone interview but not even called back. I know this is lengthy, but not getting the HR job really took the wind out of my sails. It's been difficult to bounce back. Any suggestions?

Hey Andrew, absolutely love your videos! They’re so informative! I do have some reservation about the number one question you ask the interviewer “If I was to take this job, a year from now what specifically will the person have accomplished for you to know that it was successful” - my gut feeling says that question is too bold, too overconfident. Why would an interviewer reveal their cards on what they’re looking for specifically to be successful? Could you be putting them in an awkward position expecting them to answer a question like that? I dunno. I’d be too nervous to ask a question like that. Maybe it’s because I lack confidence. I could be wrong, would love to have your feedback. Thanks for your videos.

Excellent approaches to responding to questions and about being prepared in an executive position. In my experience, for some of the companies I have interviewed with, many of those questions/ answers are volunteered BEFORE the interview begins. As an Executive candidate, often I am given a full tour of facilities, introduction to various departments, and given an thorough explanation of how the executive position would be best served. What do you ask if the employer has already discussed and volunteered many of the scenarios, prior to the interview?
The advice to make sure more time is spent on the future rather than the past. This was the best advice!!!! I was selected above all other candidates and I believe this was one of the reasons. Thank you

Hello: You've been a great help to me and I usually get the job even though I'm older. The problem I face is that employers aren't honest about the position and it seems they don't actually know the dynamics of their company. Therefore, I can't make an informed decision and am again disappointed. I have been candid with the employer and always mention my "happiness factor". Employers are aghast when a potential employee lies to them yet they seem to think it's ok when they do it. I feel trapped in a horrible situation and am again looking after just six months. What can I do differently in an interview to ensure I am getting the facts?

Also, what does it mean when the interviewer doesn't end the interview and practically waits for you to end it?? The interviewer literally refused to end it. I interviewed the other day and I was waiting for her to end it and so, I just kept asking questions. She was very nice and answered all of my questions fully.

Fantastic question. If you’re not sure, ALWAYS ask for clarification. Or, ask what specifically do they want to know. It’s always ok to ask clarifying questions in an interview!

My father in law gave me this great question to ask at an interview. It really impresses and sets you up for success. "A year from now, I want you to look back on your decision to hire me and be happy that you made that decision. What could I do during the first year of work to make sure that happens."

@andrewlacivita I just had a great -knocked it out the park- phone interview a few hours ago and I used that question. The interviewer and possible new boss said, “I really really like that question. Everyone should ask that.” Sure enough I got a second interview and she told me there was nothing holding her back from hiring me so far. Wow, I can’t tell you how much of a weight off my shoulders to know she doesn’t have any cons. After other interviews I would question what I said and if I said enough, well now I am just focusing on the next interview. I am also about toemail my thank you letter of course. Thanks Andrew!!

Really good information. I've failed my last 2 interviews. I'm not a good story teller and I when I clock off work, I typically leave work at work. Your theory of creating a imagination trumps Reality.

I like this video. I figured out what it is that I want to do. I've been a cashier, a bagger, maintenance, and I tried to be a team member, but I need to change careers. I graduated from college with a bachelors degree in business administration. I want to find an office job, or desk job. Something that has to do with business. Again I like this video.

I dont think they ask open ended questions because they are lazy. I think they ask to get an overview, and also to see how you handle an open ended question. I would only think it was them being lazy if that was the ONLY question(s) they asked.
