I have owned a 2016 XSR900, a 2018 XSR900, a 2018 MT07, and a 2017 XSR700.. and I just took delivery of a 2024 XSR900. (yes, I have motorcycle attention deficit disorder) for a total of about 100,000km on all of them combined. After riding the first one, the 2016 XSR900, I fell in love with the CP3 engine, and this converted me from owning air-cooled Ducati twins, in the 1000cc to 1100cc range, due to the power delivery of the Yamaha CP3 engine, and the practically zero maintenance required. The XSR700 and MT07 are also fantastic motorcycles, however, Im going to disagree with the prevalent opinion on commuting: I would much rather commute on the XSR900 than the XSR700 or MT07.. I find it much easier to deal with situations in traffic on the 900, than on the 700, and after several decades of not being killed on many different motorcycles, I believe the urban techniques I use (i.e., minimum 80hp), do work for me. *The throttle turns both ways* I sold my 2018 XSR900 because for my exployment, I need to not get points on my license, however, it was a mistake to sell it, as I find it more frustrating in traffic on a lower horsepower motorcycle. I have tried to get along with people in cars and pickup trucks while riding a 47hp Royal Enfield lately, and it is like taking a tiny knife to a gun fight, where the people trying to kill you have assault rifles. It just doesnt work for me, and even the XSR700/MT07 is near the bottom end of what I want to be packing for horsepower in traffic. A great video, and great observations by the way; as for me, I prefer to carry the big stick and to use it with good judgement. I have owned 47 motorcycles in 50+ yrs of riding; I am broke $$$ because of it, but as I said, I have not been killed in traffic yet; I still evaluate after every ride whether or not I need to calm down before the next ride 😀 The 900 is not for beginners, and not for riders with little or no self-dicipline; it is, however, a very sharp instrument which can be a useful thing when used correctly 👍
Nicely said! The safest place to be is Out Front, and faster than anybody around you.. Passd Quickly, don't give them a chance. You're the MoFo in charge.. you worry only about idiots in front.. that allows you to focus on yourself more. Biggest worry for me is getting rear ended. My XSR9 now has the VCN Flash, a dominator exhaust, and -1,+2 sprockets.. haven't been over 85 yet, but getting there quick is the FUN for me!!
You are right about it , not for busy hectic city rides, Mine will be arriving in a month time. Midnight black can’t wait ,we have beautiful long empty roads in to the Highlands wilderness with an amazing views especially the north coast 500 here in Scotland.
I have 2 regrets from my time in Scotland, one is not taking that redhead beauty home with me, and the other is not being smart enough at that age, to ride the highlands til my knuckles hurt, every chance I had… and not necessarily in that order btw lol
Great video lol, clearly you love the bike. I love mine as well, mine is the standard 2021 MT-09 and it does everything i could ever want, I love it. Good points about the safety and dangers, this is my fourth bike and only now does it seem fitting for me. Couldn’t imagine it as my first bike.
I started riding 4 years ago at age 32 on a ‘18 SV650. The new 2024 XRS 900 caught my eye at the dealership the other day, but I’m not sure I even want to make the upgrade. I’m mature and well educated, but I also like speed. I may get in big trouble if I move up to 117 horsepower. We will see. Wife will probably say no. 😂

Ive never rode a dirtbike or anything before. Bought a brand new 2021 mt09. I got it for a few reasons. 6 axis IMU, the rain mode, and it fits me better. I accidentally put it in mode 1 at one point and got a little spicy on a takeoff but nothing i couldnt handle. I didnt know i swapped modes. But i definitely do not recommend for people who dont think they can be responsible.
Yeah the modes really do help. When I ride a few days in mode one it makes me think that New Riders shouldn't go anywhere near this bike. But when I ride around in mode 2 it's actually super smooth and if it's somebody's first bike if they're discipline maybe they could even start in mode 3 for a few weeks while they get adjusted
Between 40 and 70. The 900 is actually better at cruising because it makes torque at lower RPMs but the thing about the 700 is you can go Full Throttle through 3 years to hit 80 versus only 2 gears on the 900. It gives you a little more to do

I just traded my 2018 mt07 for a 2022 mt09. And I agree about city riding. I think my mt07 was much better suited and more FUN in the city than my mt09. But my riding changed from daily commuting to mainly joy riding. That being said i don't regret trading at all hahaha. I love the bike except do you feel 2nd gear below 5k/7k is oddly underpowered or laggy feeling?
Yeah I made a whole video about that second gear thing. It's very noticeable if you're coming from the cp2 motor. I definitely appreciate the quick shifter for City riding though. Whether it's an mto7 or a Tenere 700, if one day they make a bike with the cp2 motor and a quick shifter I will probably own one again
Yeah the 700 is really great in a city. One day if they make an mto7 with a quick shifter stock I'd probably buy another one just because I like the sound so much. I missed out on that, I never got a chance to put aftermarket exhaust on mine.
Hey so I rode a r3 for a season and had a Gsxr 600 for about 2 years and wanted to upgrade to this beast . I love the look of the xsr but do you think it’s worth it to go the xsr 700 route or 900 route . I’ve had my license for about 4 years . Taking the MSF and knee downing on my 600 before selling last spring
It's a really tough call on what bike I like better for the street. An XSR 700 with an exhaust I legitimately think sounds better. I like the girthy sound personally. The 700 has a more raw and connected feel with the engine. The 900 you have a connected feeling with the handling. If you're trying to get somewhere and you're using the bike as a commuting tool I think the 900 is more efficient in the city because of the quick shifter and just how easy going through traffic and passing people is. If you ride around a city for fun and to just chill and have a good time the 700 is better for that hands down because it's still faster than cars but you can go through a couple gears and barely be speeding versus the 900 can be borderline stressful if you get on it in the third gear or above. It is way too easy to go 80 in a 45 within a couple seconds. For Canyon and Mountain or Track fun it's not even a competition the 900 is so much more of a sport bike and if you have the room to use some of the performance it is an exhilarating machine. I'm definitely going to make a video on this so thanks for getting my ideas spinning. I think it just comes down to this XSR 700 is perfect and more enjoyable for the Sunday Cruise type of person. XSR 900 for aggressive/spirited riding in larger settings.

That 900 just looks so sick , maybe I’d just use it in a lower setting if anything . I’d be using it in a SC . Price does play a role in a sense but that look of the 900 and riding a Gsxr it was more of a sporty aggressive feel for sure . I was knee downing around back roads corners but the sport heritage is 100% my go to but yeah I’m so in love of that 900 but it’s a question if I can get outta trouble with something with more pep .

That's funny, it was actually between this and a Tuono 660. Glad I went with this though. I'm not sure where you're from, but I'm from Southern California where there are many glorious but dangerous mountain roads that rich kids in fast cars and bikes that they can't handle fly through regularly. There is a fatality on these roads like Angeles forest, la cresta, and Ortega highway at least once a week. Many times it is a young person with a sporty vehicle like I mentioned. If you look at the reports it is always a quick car or bike. People misjudge breaking distances in fast vehicles very often. So yes, 100% I'm trying to discourage teenagers from starting motorcycling with a bike that runs at 10.6 quarter mile. Many people can start on a liter bike and not hurt themselves but many cannot. That's great if you're that person but this is my stance on the matter. Learning from mistakes sounds great, and that works with many things having to do with bikes but with what we're talking about here a lot of the times they just die man. There is no learning
I was between this and the Tuono 660 as well. But the reliability overall isn’t there for aprilia and this bike has more to offer it’s amazing how different the power is in mode 4 to mode 3 and on
I begun riding recently in my 30s on a rebel 500 and I felt the need to upgrade to a 1000cc class within a few months. I would caution any new riders, buy something you can at least learn into the power a bit. Maybe not the xsr900, though. I've test rode several 650cc bikes and I feel that displacement would be the minimum, especially if you are not a smaller person.
Yeah I feel like if you have any experience with a manual transmission or more powerful cars you can go right into the 650 class. Or even if you're in your 30s and you just have a little bit of maturity. I'm not a big fan of small displacement bikes as you're only bike even if it's your first. I'm glad my first street bike was an XSR700

Yeah totally agree it might be too much for city riding, but... the bike looks good, and you feel good on it while riding plus has more safety features than cheaper models.
Yeah I love it even with owning it longer now. It's just too good for the money. A handful at times but thrilling when you have the space for a 0 to 80 and god tier handling as well!
Just deposited the '23 XSR900.. Gotta say.. it's a matter of self control.. maturity.. knowing when to lean on it. My second bike at age 17 was a Kawasaki 750 H2. A true POS handling bike but a decent ride in a straight line. Quoted 75Hp which was pretty good back then. A Honda CB750 was a slow poke. About the only stock bike that could beat me back then was the true king, the legendary Norton Commando. Wasn't even that close. Here I am 68 yo, and I lived to tell about it! Now that I quit drinking, retired, and money to burn I can handle this Big Bad boy. Will get the blood circulating for sure.

He was a long distance guy.. had side bags etc. Seemed almost docile. Very Quiet compared to the Paint Shaker H2. Had to be Fast (don't remember the redline), but never advertised as such. The other king over the years was the also Legendary.. The V-MAX.. wow.. that V4 was it.. Now I got my XSR900 Vcyclenut Flash and -1,+2 sprockets (Won't go over 120 anyway). Gosh.. Even if I don't use it, it's worth knowing I could.. Good thing this thing has Modes!! Ride hard, live free..
@@markhall3434 I bought 2024 xsr 900 about 10 weeks ago. Gonna ride it stock until weather gets cold then send to vcycnut. My old “Buff” was a handful for 110lb 16 yo. The kawa was a tad faster tho for sure. Redlined at 7k. Typical 2 stroke, it came on hard at 4k and then just slapped the redline…hang on and keep it pointed straight. Lol. CB 750s had no chance
well....you do have mode #4 for the very faint of heart! The dealer put it in that mode when I rode it off the lot! LOL! didn't take long for that to be changed!
Awesome! D mode 2 for throttle sensitivity is really good. And if you have lift control on setting two or three it really does quite a bit to tame the Beast
Concerned about safety, you didn’t stop at the stop sign. I’m sure you would complain about a car driver failing to do the same, yeah yeah, I know it was in the middle of nowhere etc, but that car driver will say the same thing and .I just didn’t see the bike.
I usually never do that. That's like the only stop sign that I roll through because you can see cars rolling up to it a very long distance away. Thank you for your concerned though. Safety is number one for me
The XSR900 has very low insurance rates, one of the lowest of any street bike, while the MT09 has much higher insurance rates. This was adjusted from last year when the insurance rates for both bikes were the same, which is logical considering they're essentially the same bike. Apparently, however, the XSR is crashed/stolen in vastly lower rates than almost any other bike out there. Maybe it's the round headlight.
Yeah I noticed it wasn't bad at all on insurance. And neither was my XSR 700. What do you think about bikes that have almost no data for crashed and stolen? I just bought a 2024 CF Moto 450 NK which is brand new to the states
@@TheCoolestCourier I prefer to only buy bikes with traction control. I didn't think TC was important until I bought a bike with TC. Now I try to be extremely smooth and careful with my throttle, but about twice a year I'll accidentally run over white paint, lawn clippings, or a small plastic bag and have a very serious moment. I think even little bikes benefit from TC.
Yes. I mean technically you could jump on a Super Duke and prevent wheelies just by taking it easy on the throttle. I'm just giving advice based on how most people ride when they get on bikes like this, which is aggressive.
Hate when people say don't get a powerful bike as a beginner. I took that advice and got a cbr500r which I hated and as a result I never went out. No point in having a bike if it's slower than your car. The fun factor gets eliminated. And don't even get me started on how ugly small parallel twins sound. Just get something powerful that sounds good so that at the very least you'd want to go out and actually ride.
Hey I'm just saying, if you started on an R6, you may have cooked it a little too hot into a corner and might not be here to type this comment. Most people will be fine, but for the unskilled or the super new Rider it's just bad advice to start on a missile. I do agree that slow bikes are boring on the street which is why I usually tell people to get a slow dual sport because anything is fun in the dirt. The cbr500r is a little underwhelming which is why for the majority of people I always suggest the mto7. Say what you want about parallel twins but that one is special. I've ridden well over 100 bikes. All the middleweight nakeds, all the 600 Super Sports, 2019 R1, 2020 Super Duke, my 2 xsr's I've had. That being said the xsr 700 and the mt07 are in the top five most fun bikes I've ridden
Thanks for the info! The XSR900 looks awesome, but man, stop blowing stop signs. Even if there is no other car, or you don't see anything, come to a complete stop. Stop signs mean stop, not slow down.
Yeah it's a bad habit I have when I'm in La cresta. I don't do it in any other town but out there in the middle of nowhere it's rare to see another car so I know I'm usually alone. No cops around there either so I end up treating them as a "you should probably stop sign" lol

Not a lot I admit, but it is 4 years now and I am pretty committed to advancing my skills on a motorcycle. Track days, off-road, low speed proficiency. I was actually able to whip around a fully loaded goldwing with my fiance on the back through a dirt parking lot the other day. I was pretty proud of myself. They don't warn you that they're more difficult than the big Harley baggers. Anyway, tangent aside. I only consider myself an intermediate Rider, not advanced. But I am mega experience when it comes to safety and recommendations of safety. I've been a delivery driver for over 10 years and in 600,000 miles never been in an at fault accident. I have I have the miles of a 70-Year-Old under my belt with a squeaky clean driving record and I'd like to keep it that way since I'm doing cdl classes for school bus driving

XSR900 was my first bike. Got it back in 2022. I just kept the ride mode in 4 until I felt I comfortable to raise it.
My license doesn't have any points on it for some reason so I figured I needed an XSR900 to fix that

I dont feel like its all that crazy of a bike, its pretty on par with a typical 750, but it has enough tq to be used in city.

They do that to pass emissions. Get it re mapped and it will be how it should be.

I just bought one of these as my first real bike, it's a pussycat it power mode 3, but I did ride a 125 for a year and I'm 56 and not crazy lol
I'm a big fan of power mode 2. I usually ride around in 1 but I'm always impressed on how smooth mode 2 is

Why can't they make mistakes, stretch themselves, enjoy the xsr ? Having owned a 916, and R1, an RC51, there's loads of fun to be had -- and lessons to learn.

I'm not sure where you're from, but I'm from Southern California where there are many glorious but dangerous mountain roads that rich kids in fast cars and bikes that they can't handle fly through regularly. There is a fatality on these roads like Angeles forest, la cresta, and Ortega highway at least once a week. Many times it is a young person with a sporty vehicle like I mentioned. If you look at the reports it is always a quick car or bike. People misjudge breaking distances in fast vehicles very often.
So yes, 100% I'm trying to discourage teenagers from starting motorcycling with a bike that runs at 10.6 quarter mile.
Many people can start on a liter bike and not hurt themselves but many cannot. That's great if you're that person but this is my stance on the matter.
Learning from mistakes sounds great, and that works with many things having to do with bikes but with what we're talking about here a lot of the times they just die man. There is no learning
I was between this and the Tuono 660 as well. But the reliability overall isn’t there for aprilia and this bike has more to offer it’s amazing how different the power is in mode 4 to mode 3 and on

I begun riding recently in my 30s on a rebel 500 and I felt the need to upgrade to a 1000cc class within a few months. I would caution any new riders, buy something you can at least learn into the power a bit. Maybe not the xsr900, though. I've test rode several 650cc bikes and I feel that displacement would be the minimum, especially if you are not a smaller person.
Yeah I feel like if you have any experience with a manual transmission or more powerful cars you can go right into the 650 class. Or even if you're in your 30s and you just have a little bit of maturity. I'm not a big fan of small displacement bikes as you're only bike even if it's your first. I'm glad my first street bike was an XSR700

XSR900 latest model has an 810.3 mm. And I wondering does it fits on short rider, and by the way I'm around 166/167 CM.
The seat height is low for the class. It's an inch shorter than an xsr700

Yeah totally agree it might be too much for city riding, but... the bike looks good, and you feel good on it while riding plus has more safety features than cheaper models.
Yeah I love it even with owning it longer now. It's just too good for the money. A handful at times but thrilling when you have the space for a 0 to 80 and god tier handling as well!

Just deposited the '23 XSR900.. Gotta say.. it's a matter of self control.. maturity.. knowing when to lean on it. My second bike at age 17 was a Kawasaki 750 H2. A true POS handling bike but a decent ride in a straight line. Quoted 75Hp which was pretty good back then. A Honda CB750 was a slow poke. About the only stock bike that could beat me back then was the true king, the legendary Norton Commando. Wasn't even that close. Here I am 68 yo, and I lived to tell about it! Now that I quit drinking, retired, and money to burn I can handle this Big Bad boy. Will get the blood circulating for sure.
Just got it!! Only a 6 week wait to boot. Gosh Golly this ain't Grandpa's H2 for sure!! and I'm the friggin' Grandpa! Just because you Can doesn't mean you will.. it's such a thrill to Know you could of you wanted to, even if you don't. Respect the Hardware, know your limits.. and you'll live to tell about it.

He was a long distance guy.. had side bags etc. Seemed almost docile. Very Quiet compared to the Paint Shaker H2. Had to be Fast (don't remember the redline), but never advertised as such. The other king over the years was the also Legendary.. The V-MAX.. wow.. that V4 was it.. Now I got my XSR900 Vcyclenut Flash and -1,+2 sprockets (Won't go over 120 anyway). Gosh.. Even if I don't use it, it's worth knowing I could.. Good thing this thing has Modes!! Ride hard, live free..
@@markhall3434 I bought 2024 xsr 900 about 10 weeks ago. Gonna ride it stock until weather gets cold then send to vcycnut. My old “Buff” was a handful for 110lb 16 yo. The kawa was a tad faster tho for sure. Redlined at 7k. Typical 2 stroke, it came on hard at 4k and then just slapped the redline…hang on and keep it pointed straight. Lol. CB 750s had no chance
well....you do have mode #4 for the very faint of heart! The dealer put it in that mode when I rode it off the lot! LOL! didn't take long for that to be changed!
About two days from 4 to 1 when i rode mine away from the dealers 🙄
Just ordered mine! might leave everything on the softest setting for a few months even tho it's not my first bike haha
Awesome! D mode 2 for throttle sensitivity is really good. And if you have lift control on setting two or three it really does quite a bit to tame the Beast

Bikes are about finesse. You either have self control or you don't. Its better to live another day and just enjoy it.
Concerned about safety, you didn’t stop at the stop sign. I’m sure you would complain about a car driver failing to do the same, yeah yeah, I know it was in the middle of nowhere etc, but that car driver will say the same thing and .I just didn’t see the bike.
I usually never do that. That's like the only stop sign that I roll through because you can see cars rolling up to it a very long distance away. Thank you for your concerned though. Safety is number one for me
The XSR900 has very low insurance rates, one of the lowest of any street bike, while the MT09 has much higher insurance rates. This was adjusted from last year when the insurance rates for both bikes were the same, which is logical considering they're essentially the same bike. Apparently, however, the XSR is crashed/stolen in vastly lower rates than almost any other bike out there.
Maybe it's the round headlight.
Yeah I noticed it wasn't bad at all on insurance. And neither was my XSR 700. What do you think about bikes that have almost no data for crashed and stolen? I just bought a 2024 CF Moto 450 NK which is brand new to the states
@@TheCoolestCourier I prefer to only buy bikes with traction control. I didn't think TC was important until I bought a bike with TC. Now I try to be extremely smooth and careful with my throttle, but about twice a year I'll accidentally run over white paint, lawn clippings, or a small plastic bag and have a very serious moment. I think even little bikes benefit from TC.

Yes. I mean technically you could jump on a Super Duke and prevent wheelies just by taking it easy on the throttle. I'm just giving advice based on how most people ride when they get on bikes like this, which is aggressive.
Hate when people say don't get a powerful bike as a beginner. I took that advice and got a cbr500r which I hated and as a result I never went out. No point in having a bike if it's slower than your car. The fun factor gets eliminated. And don't even get me started on how ugly small parallel twins sound. Just get something powerful that sounds good so that at the very least you'd want to go out and actually ride.
Hey I'm just saying, if you started on an R6, you may have cooked it a little too hot into a corner and might not be here to type this comment. Most people will be fine, but for the unskilled or the super new Rider it's just bad advice to start on a missile. I do agree that slow bikes are boring on the street which is why I usually tell people to get a slow dual sport because anything is fun in the dirt. The cbr500r is a little underwhelming which is why for the majority of people I always suggest the mto7. Say what you want about parallel twins but that one is special. I've ridden well over 100 bikes. All the middleweight nakeds, all the 600 Super Sports, 2019 R1, 2020 Super Duke, my 2 xsr's I've had. That being said the xsr 700 and the mt07 are in the top five most fun bikes I've ridden

Thanks for the info! The XSR900 looks awesome, but man, stop blowing stop signs. Even if there is no other car, or you don't see anything, come to a complete stop. Stop signs mean stop, not slow down.
Yeah it's a bad habit I have when I'm in La cresta. I don't do it in any other town but out there in the middle of nowhere it's rare to see another car so I know I'm usually alone. No cops around there either so I end up treating them as a "you should probably stop sign" lol

Two bikes, one guy going 150+, and another guy who didn't see him coming and blew through the stop. One of them didn't make it. In any case, great review, and awesome bike. Be safe bro!

Not a lot I admit, but it is 4 years now and I am pretty committed to advancing my skills on a motorcycle. Track days, off-road, low speed proficiency. I was actually able to whip around a fully loaded goldwing with my fiance on the back through a dirt parking lot the other day. I was pretty proud of myself. They don't warn you that they're more difficult than the big Harley baggers. Anyway, tangent aside. I only consider myself an intermediate Rider, not advanced. But I am mega experience when it comes to safety and recommendations of safety. I've been a delivery driver for over 10 years and in 600,000 miles never been in an at fault accident. I have I have the miles of a 70-Year-Old under my belt with a squeaky clean driving record and I'd like to keep it that way since I'm doing cdl classes for school bus driving
Still a novice rider imo. Gets too happy on the power and sounds immature
