    Loss of oil pressure made the hydraulic timing chain tensioner loosen up and the chain skipped a few teeth which caused piston to valve contact.

    I did a valve adjustment on my FJ-09 a few years ago and broke the timing chain damper. Dumb ass mistake, but I wasn't able to find all the small broken plastic pieces. Two years later, the oil pick up found those pieces. Yeah, it destroyed the crank bearings, pistons and a bunch of other stuff. I got it completely rebuilt and it's been perfect since. It was $5,500 and took 3 months, but I love my bike.
    My cam chain tensioner had to be replaced, as well as the cam chain and sprockets. The valves and transmission were fine, but the oil was full of crank bearing metal flakes.

    Timing chain failure, clearly. With low oil, the hidraulic tensioner will fail.

    So the most economical way to fix this situation is to try and rebuild this engine? Can insurance be used? It seems that a new one could be found for maybe $10,000 out the door? I’m just concerned there is so much damage. What caused this? Not checking the oil?

    • @provenpowercycles

      @michaelrieser9928 we ended up swapping the motor out. The damage was so extensive, we would have to have rebuilt every piece almost. There was a handful of parts reusable from the motor but not enough to justify a rebuild. He had a warranty on the bike but the dealerships down here aren't the fastest on rebuilds / warranty claims. He knows that and told us he'd rather pay than wait months on end for the rebuild to take place through dealership. We had him in and out in less than 2 months with a new(ish) motor in the bike ripping down the street again! 🤙

    • @provenpowercycles

      @michaelrieser9928 and the issue was low oil while front end was lifting up. Oil starved the head/crank and it destroyed a lot of components in motor.

  • @lold6130

    Why would a 2023 bike use so much oil? Wouldn't an oil warning light come on?

    • @provenpowercycles

      @lold6130 wheelies are a major reason for oil consumption. When you stand the bike up, you get oil that gets pushed up into the airbox and then gets burnt during normal combustion process.

  • @QuicKurtZX14R

    Lost oil pressure to cam chain tensioner and jumped timing, about the only way to hit valves to piston, unless the valves stuck in the guides first which is unlikely

      I didn't cheat either 😊

    • @QuicKurtZX14R

      Thought they had a locking mechanism so they wouldn't back out that much to allow the chain to jump timing, shrugs. On a side note I check my oil level before each ride always, even though it doesn't burn or leak any visibly

    • @provenpowercycles

      @QuicKurtZX14R I think between loosing pressure and chsin slapping it whipped it way back! It got stuck beyond the set point when you are resetting the tensioner.

    Very Strange. I ride my Tracer 900GT since new , it has 59000km (37000miles more or less) it's serviced every 6000 miles, , and engine doesn't have any oil comsumption. Ok, i don't ride it hard but i don't ride it slow either. So very strange

    • @provenpowercycles

      @nunofjantunes wheelies create excessive oil consumption. He admitted to doing it frequently. The oil pickup struggles to get the proper amount of oil and pressure to the critical components and over time it chews away at bearings and journals in the motor. You get metal on metal and eventually wngine failure.

  • @langhamp8912

    • @provenpowercycles

      @langhamp8912 that's a good one too. It is possible!

    • @langhamp8912

      @@provenpowercycles I'm skeptical that even a completely non-functional cam chain tensioner would have such off timing as to hit valve with heads, but mis-shifts and rev-bombs destroy valves and heads all the time. The engine pushing against the valves caused the cam chain and bearing head journal to break and not (I think) the other way around. Rev-bombing is such an awful trend; what's wrong with just reving the engine instead of holding the throttle wide open?

    • @provenpowercycles

      @tysoncott7402 lots of wheelies. When you pop it up the oil gets sucked up through the breather hose on the back of the block, then slowly gets into the intake valves and burnt up. Over a couple thousand miles of doing repetitive behaviors, you get low on oil

      @@provenpowercycles I wheelied my 2nd gen XSR900 nearly every day before it got wrecked and in 24k miles I never had any failure remotely close to this. It sounds like someone made a mistake somewhere to have this serious of a failure.

    • @provenpowercycles

      @RJBiteanerd and that's very possible too. We don't service every bike that comes through here but I do know that doing excessive wheelies can cause premature oil consumption. I've seen it a bunch on stunt bikes down here. There are a ton of variables but he admitted when he checked oil last that he was about 1.5 quarts low on oil which is substantial amount to be low on while doing wheelies

      I have a used 2007 ktm 990 superduke. 25mpg, and it drinks oil almost as fast. I don’t do wheelies. Not a drip on the floor! Internet said that engine is notorious for burning oil. Got the 2024 390 duke to have fun on the twisties and I’m getting 52mpg. Much cheaper per ride.

    How did a brand new bike get so low on oil?

    • @provenpowercycles

      @matthews8576 from what I've seen, it's mainly people who do a lot of wheelies. My theory is that oil is getting blown thru the crank case vent and going thru airbox and consumed during normal combustion process. Owner did admit to doing quiet a few wheelies but usually checks oil periodically. He admitted to getting a little lax on it recently....
