The Last of Us Part 2 has been patched to support PlayStation 5, with 'back compat plus' functionality delivering the PlayStation 4 Pro experience at a full, practically flawless 60 frames per second. We've been playing the upgraded game for the last week and this is our report.

With the 5.5GBs nvme and 10GB memory for games, the ps5 is only 2x more powerful than a ps4, and all the devs could do was unlocking the 60fps ? Come on ...
Wasn't there at least enough power left to grab the texture compression slider, and reduce the overall compression, so the overall graphics look sharper ?
The reason why they only released a crappy 60fps patch , without messing with the graphics is.... they will later release a proper Tlou2 ps5 remaster, like they did with Tlou1 on ps3/ps4.

The audio design in this game was genuinely the best I've ever heard. I remember being super impressed by RE2 Remake but this was another level up

Indeed. All subjective opinions of the story aside... There is no denying that this is one of the best ever designed games. From Audio the overall level and game design. Animation etc. It's a sensation to experience. So getting to now play it in 60fps. Can't wait.
I played it with the PlayStation headphone and enjoyed every delicate raindrop in surround sound. So amazing.
The music gave me PTSD on permadeath lmao, kinda not kidding either😂, also died to Scars as Abby on day1 so there whistle's haunt my dreams
When ellie is crouched her voice pitch changes when shes talking her voicelines too.
I'm glad this generation is officially making the jump and targeting 60fps, or at least giving us the option to do so. I will take a game at 1440p/60fps *any day* over native 4k/30fps.
Sonys trailer for this patch/update specifically states "ENHANCED RESOLUTION" and yet DF report there is no such enhancement??!?

The Last of Us Part II was "next gen" before next gen launched in my opinion.
Absolutely, ND knows how to push the console to its limits.
I played on base PS4. I was absolutely blown away at what Naughty Dog achieved on such an old console.
Played it four times back to back on the various difficulties. Loved it.
@@alansmith4655 I loved playing encounters in game+ mode with all weapons unlocked and unlimited ammo cheat just to have fun with the game's systems such as unlimited explosive arrows.
However, I just started doing a new playthrough on grounded+ mode which doesn't allow any cheats and resources are extremely limited. Boy it ramps up the tension in the game so much more. It's like a completely different game playing it that way where you have to take your time and one small incorrect move and you are screwed. I had to start using every tactic from throwing bottles to actually using the smoke grenades.
Difficulty settings in this game really change how you play the game. There what I love about the gameplay. Enemy AI becomes far more aggressive in hunting you out and flanking. I love it.
Just like the original, i can’t believe it runs on PS3
I played though this game largely blind (even avoided spoilers) on PS5 last week. The experience was flawless, both technically and in terms of the presentation itself.
What I'm still so struck by is the animation work in this game. ND really are head and shoulders above most of the industry in the fidelity and quality of their character animations. So many beautiful bespoke touches during gameplay that help sell the tangibility of the world.
Gears 5 is the closest thing the Xbox has. More exagerated but still very nice. The first Last of Us still looks amazing too.

The Animations are incredible! I wish more games had such detailed animations. They improve the experience tenfold!

I'm glad you pointed out the audio design. Even on stereo, it's detailed enough to the point where Survival and Grounded players can use it to locate enemies. Sound was actually the most impressive aspect for me personally, and it's one that I never gave much thought before playing Part II.
Do you need Sony platinum headset for that?
@@TheSageocool I used plain stereo headsets the whole time. If your PS4 is connected to a 7.1 device though it'll be better obviously
This game with headset is so good. It’s really something else when you can hear a stalker creepin up behind you. It helps but it’s also terrifying
Looks insane...This game has the most "organic" gameplay I have ever experienced, at 60 fps that gets even better.
Agreed, even though the story was kinda flat for me during Abby's part/near the end, the gameplay was enough to keep me going and attempt deathless runs. I'm hoping they port this style of combat to the TLoU1 Remake on PS5 and can't wait to see what they do with graphical fidelity and animations now that they can use UE5.
I just hope they start over with the characters for TLoU3 and go back to their story telling ways from 1 (ex from 2: trying to tell a story about revenge and the affects it has on everyone around you when you're only focused on it...yet the "counterpart" to the main character is given a "hero" spot light and removed from the revenge story to show how "good of a person" she was...such a bad decision, but I can respect the bold move for what they were going for).

@@manuelp7472 It wasn't, but would have been better if it was focused around that theme over the bland shit they gave for Abby's part to humanize her more and demonize Ellie more for mistreating/ignoring her friends/family/love in order to get revenge.
The ‘targeted’ had me worried but I’m glad you guys got early access to the patch and you can confirm that it’s a solid 60fps
Less risky than saying fixed 60fps and have all the nerds cry if it drops to 59fps for one second

Digital Foundry make games sound almost poetic. Gets me excited about gaming like no one else.
Also, say what you want about Naughty Dog, their tech and set pieces skills are unmatched.
I wouldn't say unmatched, but they are among the best in the industry.
@@dragons_red yeah should've added its subjective. And I don't even have a PS system. But they just do random stuff that no one else does, and make it exciting. where else can you walk on a building crane or pet a giraffe or walk in a space museum? but again, its subjective.
Their animation, story telling and acting etc are also unmatched(imo).
@@SkemeKOS I agree. And they're smart about it, They invest in R&D and create systems that they can implement in their other games and improving on them, in this case animation and mo cap. those hose physics they have in tlou2 were an evolution of the jeep rope from U4

I know this game wasn’t for everyone but I gotta say that playing it was a rollercoaster of emotions I won’t ever forget
I would have bought the game, but then i saw staff and voice actors from the game encouraging the political bs hissy fits on twitter. From my perspective, they purposefully made a toxic community. A lot of the "drama" wasnt even real too... Its a shame... now i never want to buy a naughty dog game again. I doubt im the only one who saw that and felt that way.

@Nobody honestly Abby’s day 1 is the slowest part in the game for me, although her day 2 is one of my favourite parts so I guess it balances out
@Nobody I think there’s a legitimate argument about whether the final chapter of the gsme with the rattlers was needed. I personally loved the gameplay so much that I always wanted as much as possible but it did turn into a bit of a slog at the end and I think the farm would have served perfectly fine as the last part of the game, they could have even had X leaving the farm like they did but without the gameplay segment that followed.
I thought that plush shark was real-life footage for 2-3 seconds.

But The Last of Us: Part 2 is number 2 of the best looking games.
The fact this game is a PS4 game and looks the way it does is mind-blowing. This game deserves every technical award it received.
Just came off a 2nd playthrough (on PS5) since my first on PS4 Pro back in 2020 and I can STILL say that this is the best looking game I've ever seen, as well as one of my all-time favorites.

John this is an amazing deep dive ! I especially love the audio section - audio plays such a important part of the experience.
the game mechanic is so well done that it makes all the other game i've played before feel wonky, other naughty dog's game included... the way the character dives on the ground, or fall on the back after being hit by a bullet then aim one handed... this game is an absolute masterpiece
The story may have been divisive but I don't think anyone can deny how graphically amazing this game is.

Already a technical marvel, now with 99.9% stable 60fps, TLOU II is a joy to control and traverse.

Never been immersed into a world like this game. This post pandemic world, the cities, the suburbs, the country and woods in different seasons, simply amazing. Waited for ps5 release to start playing on my oled gx. Honestly didn't notice I was playing at 30 fps this whole time.
It has great motion blur at 30fps with minimal drops as DF says.
@@fenixa2z936 the motion blur and elite anti aliasing solution make almost feel 45fps. They really squeezed everything out of the ps4

This is a really beautiful video. Many of the most visually striking scenes of the game are in the later Abby sections that couldn't be shown in the initial reviews, and I'm glad you've gotten the opportunity to highlight them here.

This makes me wonder how games running on 30 fps will look like from developers like Naughty Dog, Rockstar, Santa Monica Studios, etc. The future of this generation is gonna be as close as it gets to photorealistic graphics, I hope.
It's good to hear some focus on the audio in the game. It's something that's truly impressive, even in the first game.
A great example is the sniper scene you spoke about, listen to the order of the sound arriving. You hear the bullet smash the surface, and a split second later, the shot can be heard. Quite an accurate representation of how something like that might sound.
I'll be giving the game another play through soon as I e still got the permadeath trophy to collect, plus I just love the game, so I'm really looking forward to feeling that 60fps action.

One of the most beautiful details in the game for me, is how the light bounces off the iris in the characters eyes. That looks just like in real life and it's the first game ever to do this. This adds SO MUCH life to the characters. Can't wait to see a TLOU 1 Remake und TLOU 2 Remaster for PS5, hopefully with Raytracing.
I wish i knew this was coming.
Just pulled it out my backlog and finished it last week.
Kinda crazy how the two best looking games (RDR2 and TLOU2) are both last gen games without proper next gen updates.
the last of us pt 1 remake actually looks better then its sequel now.

Great job as always. Just some feedback: I would appreciate if you include the base PS4 when talking about frames, resolution and loading times comparisons, since most of us came from the original PS4 to PS5. I know in this particular case the framerate was solid on base PS4 too but for future comparisons it would be great. Keep it up!

same routine ... such a great year for games for being sich a shitty year.
The reason that section on top the building is slow is because there is a lot of things being rendered that you don't ever get to see. I figured this out when I turned on the highlight assist feature in the accessibility settings. Damn near the entire city is rendered around you and hidden by the fog.
Knew it was coming eventually but hadn't heard anything about timing. What nice surprise tho, I just downloaded the game to replay this weekend. Perfect timing!

Seeing this game in 60fps makes me realise how good the v-sync was for 30fps on the PS4 Pro
V sync? I don't understand what you mean. The ps5 version is also using v sync.
@@helloguy8934 Usually 30fps looks pretty bad, but TLoU2 on PS4 Pro made the 30fps really smooth, not choppy. Might've been the motion blur too. Whatever they did they made 30fps feel like 60fps really well.
Is this a joke? For v-sync to work on 30fps, you would actually need a 30Hz display. V-Sync helps sync those frequencies.
I'm looking forward to WD Legion's 60fps update. It'll be interesting to see what compromises had to be made on a current-gen version vs just patching a last-gen title.

To be honest they might be able to bump up the resolution as well on U4 while maintaining 60fps.
As amazing as U4 is, LoU Pt. II is still technically much more impressive, which gives me hope that they could add more than just a 60fps patch for the game. They should do the same for Lost Legacy and I might finally play through the whole thing. 😂
I played it in virtually 60fps because of my tv settings and It looked amazing.
In regards to the area at 07:30 which drops frames, I think I remember having to deal with tons of NPCs in that scene so that might be to blame. I presume the NPCs on the sub-levels all activate when you reach a certain "mark".

I still hold grudge toward the game. no matter how amazing it is on technical and graphical level. It still way worse than the original game in terms of story.
I don't think anyone was saying the game was ever bad Inna technical sense. I think people have full respect for what the devs at naughty are able to do in thier overworked toxic environment. The probably was the story and the poor direction the game took with such fleshed out characters.
The story is still miles below the original, its a great game, but people never disliked it for technical reasons. It was the story which is still divisive to this day

Sadly, the motion blur shutter speed hasn't been adjusted for this new framerate, so the golf club has less impact and intensity
So many ps4 disc games with the free ps5 patch it makes the games like new .
Try Mass Effect 1,2 and 3 at 4k/60fps and Horizon Zero Dawn at 4k/60. It is awesome.
All with faster loading times as a bonus .
14:48 Not only the enemy tilts their head when you miss a shot, the enemy also misses their own shot so the ammo doesn't exactly go to waste with near misses on enemy. You notice these tiny details with the gameplay mechanics when playing in the grounded mode.
Uncharted 1 does that
