The Audio in this games really stands out. Each fire of your weapon has real impact, your enemies take centre stage, and the overall tone and mood of it is stunning - it really helps you feel the story and scenes. I found HDR in this game is also worth seeing, especially with the natural lighting style. I can't stop using the photo mode to just glare at the impressive visuals.
Said this to my friend! The gunfights are absolutely intense as hell! Every gunshot feels super impactful and like you are right there! Hooked up to my soundbar it's sounds incredible! Like a movie experience!
@@kc-me6wl I'm actually quite impressed how true they kept to the vibe of the concept art. Usually the mood of the game strays from the concept art due to technical implementations. This one resembles it really well, which I think has a lot to do with the impact.
@@DarkP1 whenever he is more candid in other videos he is actually very likable but for some reason on these scripted videos hes thinks that he has to come up with the kings speech or something and sometimes he uses borderline pretentious descriptions to get his point across. case in point in this video he used the word "effortlessly" in a way that didn't fit and kinda didn't make sense. there is nothing about the visuals in this game that were done effortlessly, in fact it is the exact opposite of that word. so much effort went in to this games visuals and sound. the games story, not so much.
@truejustice yeah but the entire purpose of this channel and its videos is to focus on the technical makeup of video games and the hardware that powers them. you can get your opinion pieces elsewhere.

I'm a PC gaming primarily and I was impressed. The motion blur is good enough to get used to the 30fps after a while too. Still sucks it's a console exclusive. Imagine how good this would look above 60fps on my native 1440p monitor.
@@Williampentium133 I usually play on PC and run a 144hz monitor, so 30fps feels horrible for me, but honestly playing through tlou2 felt fine on 30 fps and I think I'd rather a consistent 30fps 2160p than a 60fps 1440p. Although having both as an option would be awesome.
It’s incredible that you can shoot an enemy, see the blood pour out of the wound which naturally pools around the body and then you can even see real reflections in the blood pool
Then you can walk through the blood pool, hear your shoes squelch, and then see the bloody footprints you leave behind.

Or when you shoot someone in the head and the blood and particles have real travel until they hit a wall and stick to it realistically and then slowly slide down, it's freaking nuts
It looks absolutely stunning. But games that fully utilize the next gen consoles will look and run better. Just wait until 2022 and beyond, you'll see games pushing far beyond this from the AAA Sony studios.
I agree! I have a PS4 Pro + LG OLED C9 TV (4K HDR) and it truly looks like a Next-Gen game when compared to any other game on PS4... It's amazing! I also use TruMotion to make it feel smoother than 30fps, it actually feels like 120fps since the TV is 120Hz lol. I love it 😍❤
Safe to say that, as of today, this is the best looking console game I've ever seen in my life. And I said the same of the original TLoU in 2013 so Naughty Dog continues to deliver.
As someone who played RDR2 on a PC at ultra settings I must say that this game is a technical achievement, I have no doubt that this game has the best graphics I've ever seen on a linear game to date(and the most impressive thing is that it is running on a 7 year old console). I hope ND continues to expand TLOU universe on PS5.
@@ThePandaInfernal totally agree this game looks so dam good. So when otherb8gbudgetgames look and run like mud makes so if naughty dog can do why can all big developers achieve this level???
PlayStation has so many talented 1st party studios and their ace in winning people over, just imagine what they will produce with the PS5's power when you look at current gen games like GOW, Uncharted 4, Horizon
Seriously GOW on the ps4 could pass as a next gen title at times. I was playing it again a couple of months ago and some scenes just look so damn good I was thinking to myself if they showed this at the ps5 presentation people would believe it's a next gen title
@@scarface11991 Ha I was literally doing the same a couple of days ago lol. Also some people were saying Ghost of Tsushima was ps5 footage when it was first revealed 😂 as op said some very talented people working at the first party devs
Totally agree that GoW kinda felt ahead of its time from a Technical Stand point, definitley felt like a Next Gen Title. The only recent Game that i saw, that gave me God of War Vibes from a Technical Stand point when i frist saw it, was "Blach Myth Wukong". It looked like something Next Gen, with the same fluid Combat Animation as God of War, maybe even better.
Finished the game yesterday. Incredible game - though it's more of an experience imo. Almost every aspect is top tier. Amazing achievement Naughty Dog.
Yeah it was really amazing. I just finished it too and it’s really stuck with me since. I even went back and played the left behind dlc from the first game
A true testament to what rasterized visuals are capable of. In the future people will look back in total awe at what developers were able to accomplish with sheer work and cleverness to the technology available.
Imagine some people hate this do to a few seconds of the story, while other games don't even have a story!!! Sorry, but humans have become low IQ sick hating egoistic people.
I love how the artists keep finding new tricks to achieve such amazing and realistic results. They're small, but they all slowly add a little bit more to achieve a very realistic image, which keeps games improving over the years.
This game really feels like a culmination everything Naughty Dog was striving for since Uncharted 1. Excellent linear level design, captivating narrative, characters that feel real thanks next-level motion capture, insane levels of detail, the violent, brutal and grounded combat design from the first TLOU, very natural looking and responsive gameplay animations systems similar to Uncharted 4, and even takes cues from the more open level design aspects of Uncharted Lost Legacy. The biggest step forward for this game over the others is the gameplay animations and enemy AI.
I kinda want to take this comment above me to mention a couple things. Game development is harsh, yes. And overworking employees is an issue, but large studios ALWAYS have a ton of movement with employees as a game goes through development. Hire extra in crunch time, layoffs or move to other projects as development winds down. Its shitty but it happens. Most of these people are not saying fuck it, I hate this, I'm leaving. They are moving to other opportunities or fields as their skills progress. The visuals that are achieved in TLoU2 mostly come from the engine and tools that Naughty Dog have been developing for years. More than likely hundreds of people have had their hand in improving these tools. Remember that ND is a business in the vein of creativity and passion. People have been too pessimistic recently about this.
@@aerostorm_ I don't think it's okay to take advantage of people's passion and creativity though. I'm not sure if Naughty Dog does this specifically, but an unfortunate common trend in game development is unpaid overtime. There are also societal pressures that come along with crunch time as well; you're given the "choice" to work late but if you refuse you'll probably be screwing one or many of your co-workers over. It's not being pessimistic when people are being taken advantage of, and I think it's important that people know what actually goes into making a game have visual fidelity like TLoU2.
Don't believe the haters, I'm usually on the PC/Xbox side most of the time but I just finished this on PS4 Pro and Naughty Dog have pulled off an absolute masterpiece
I agree. A single player game that tells a great story and engages one's emotions is a proper artistic experience regardless of the system. This is why Final Fantasy 7 for the orignal PS1 for instance was so great. No real PC gamer would dislike these titles. That said, hopefully this game does come to Windows, so we can experience it.
Couldn’t disagree more in my opinion! It’s no masterpiece with such a floored story structure. Technically / graphically stunning agreed and coming from personally rating Naughty Dog as simply the best studio out there. I’ve completed Tlou at least half a dozen times, loved that game and utterly disappointed in this game. Just goes to show how polarising this game is, everyone’s opinion is valid but fundamentally object to the minority of extreme stuff there has been, but that’s being used to blanket everyone that takes massive issues with this sequel!,
@@adr0110 in my opinion this game is a masterpiece, any game that makes you feel those kind of emotions is a masterpiece, everyone is entitled to their own opinion but in reality most of the hate is because of what happend to Joel, which is stupid coz if what happened didnt happend it would be a boring story.
I am 17 hours in and am thinking the same thing. This was crazy, it is hard for me to understand how this was achieved. Naughty Dog on the PS5 is going to be nuts.
@@kevinchrisney yes yes yes! Can you imagine a stealth based mp match with wlf vs scars on that island on fire? I hope that's part of what they have planned, I AM ALL IN!
Not just that too...the physics engine is nuts in this! I saw my exit wound from a headshot with the blood pools flowing from the exit wound!!! Its nuts the attention to detail
Guilherme Rodrigues i like the ending in theory, it's just the way they presented it took away some of the impact imo. also other stuff like the non-chronological structure is an interesting experiment but ultimately made the game less immersive.
there's such a punchy thud when your weapon connects with the glass and the sound of the glass shattering and pattering all over the floor is so pleasing.
Not overall. Theres somethings that both do better then the other, like character models and facial animation for example, TLOU2 does way better while the open world in RDR2 is way more impressive.
@Subi_fan I disagree man and I've played probably 300 hrs of RDR2 and 40 of TLOU2. The ground and certain textures in Red Dead are definitely blurry, even Pro w/ HDR.
I wish English was my main language so that I could accurately express all the beautiful adjectives that this game deserves and describe the whole spectrum of wonderful and sometimes terrifying emotions I've experienced while playing it. A true masterpiece of a game. It's so impactful that I honestly believe it changed me as a person - I hope for the best.
@@Spoopy_man Thanks. But sometimes I find myself typing entire sentences just to delete everything at the end and not comment at all. The original comment took me a few good tens of minutes to write :D
Games today are more about experiencies as a whole more than each part that composes it and this is one of the best, a roller coaster of emotions from start to the very end. This is a clear example that someting doesn't need to be perfect to become a masterpiece.
As much as I have mixed feelings about the story, the graphics, audio and overall presentation blew me away. My sister who gives no F's about video games, was commenting about how real it looks and how far games have come.
Now that I’ve finally experienced this game on PlayStation 5, it has left me reeling for more. Here’s hoping for a part 3, after the upcoming show is released on HBO.
I feel like they made last of us 2 in a way so that they could never make a third game. Where would the story go from here? Joel and Ellie’s story ended in part 1
I like how he reviews it in very specific detail for half an hour but doesn't talk about the story at all. Appreciate the spoiler free zone. So excited to play this.
Obviously the graphics and lighting are an incredible technical achievement, but it's even more impressive when you consider the attention to even the tiniest details in the game. For instance, when you're playing, if you sprint and then dive into prone multiple times, Ellie will actually get scrapes and scuff marks on her forearms. If you stand under a stream of water coming off of a gutter, it will actually splash and splatter when pouring on the character (in most games it just tends to clip through with zero collision), and Ellie will wipe the water off her face afterwards. The gore system is also incredibly detailed. You can blow someone's jaw clean off if you shoot them in the face with a hunting rifle, or if you shoot someone in the throat, they'll actually gurgle and choke on their own blood as they die. Honestly, the only game I've seen that competes with the level of detail in TLOU2 is probably Red Dead Redemption 2. Frankly it blows my mind what Naughty Dog and Rockstar have managed to pull off on seven year old hardware. I can only imagine what just these two developers will pull off with the PS5 and Series X
@@utlwanangmmeti9466 well Cyberpunk is a much different style of game. It's a very large, incredibly dense and detailed open world, with a day/night cycle and dynamic lighting, as well as being populated with way more NPCs than TLOU2. It's also only the 4th game that CDPR have made, only their second open world, and the first game they've made that's an FPS. I mean it certainly needs to be optimized better, but it's not hard to imagine why it was difficult to get it running smoothly. CDPR also had to get Cyberpunk running on like 7 different platforms, which is a challenge in and of itself
later on you get to play as the opposition side and get to know the people that u initially killed as fast as in 5 seconds, in a much more intimate manner. Idk why people complain about the story other than being too attached to the character from the first game. But this story here is one of the best in video games history. Contrasting morals, justice, grey zones, showing duality and yet also showing uncertainty in that duality

Typical of modern sequel writing, past character development is ignored, past plot points are retconned for convenience and the games plot/writing contradicts itself in so many ways it's rediculous. Its not just JOEL that is gone, it's the heart and intelligence of the previous game that's missing.
There have been times when I had to take a break coz the tension that the game creates when things get chaotic is a little too much for the heart! Outstanding work by naughty dog!
Sorry but graphics aren't everything in the game the story needs to be good as well? This is why alot fans of The Last of Us are very disappointed with Naughty Dog on part 2.
I'm currently playing through this game it literally looks next gen for me. It's best looking game this generation. The attention to detail is jaw dropping.
To add the the blood effects it reacts differently to surfaces If it's on a concrete or tiled floor the blood will pool there, if it's on carpet or dirt it will appear to soak into the surface. This also works if the blood is on both a hard floor and a soft surface at the same time.
While it's not the most gory game I've ever played the realism of the kills made it sometimes really disturbing. Also the sounds the npcs would make if you shoot or stab them in neck like gargling on their own blood were also really disturbing. I've played games like postal 2 or soldier of fortune 2 but none of them had such an impact imho.
There is, take out the game disk and slam it a couple of dozen times with a hammer. If you own a digital version throwing your PS4 under a bus or from a tall building will suffice.
You can thank Andy Gavin, one of the original Founder's of Naughty Dog, When it was just Andy and his friend making Crash Bandicoot hoping Sony would publish it He has made so many amazing Advancements in Coding and Game Engines that have got Naughty Dog to this point and because of his obsession with never leaving hardware unused and squeezing out every bit of power from the machine.
Naughty Dog didn't make Crash for Sony, they made it for Universal. Sony met Naughty Dog when Andy and Jason wanted to sell the company during the development of Jak 1.
The first thing that really stood out to me compared to all the TH-cam videos is the *HDR*. It's utterly stunning in this game! And yeah, combined with the excellent audio, it's *the* one game that really makes me feel like at a movie theater.
@Larry Kenobi however, you have to watch/play through the whole story to understand it, not just through some pieces, because events of plot should be judged only in the context.

@@boccatosantos I like the game, it's amazing and I'm against most of the hate, not that it isn't flawed. But it was just the way you said "enoying playing on my Playstation Headset" that sounded so weird lol.
I am 7 years late to The Last of Us - I bought the remastered version when it came out and tried to play it twice but bailed after 60 minutes, I don't 100% know why. Due to this, I had no interest in Part 2 and actively avoided anything to do with it because it was shaping up to be too violent for me to find any enjoyment. Fast forward to a month ago and I sat down and committed myself to playing Part 1 ... I was so very wrong about this series, it is utterly incredible. I have just finished Part 2, which was brutal, violent, and emotionally impactful - but it was necessary, it told a story, and it made you feel the weight of your actions. It is a masterpiece, no question. I am enjoying working my way through the DF videos now that I know what happens in the game. John's technical analysis is fantastic but if I ignore the methods utilised and focus on just playing the game, it is, without doubt, the most consistently impressive visual/audio experience in gaming to-date IMO.
Glad to hear that as someone who had a similar experience... I now have my PS5 and was able to get TLoU Part 2 for REALLY CHEAP today so I'm gonna sit down and make myself play through these games finally... The weight of everything isn't as bad/crazy as I remember it being back on the PS3 but it's felt a little off and I think it might have to so with the ergonomics of the PS5 Dualsense, gonna switch over to my Dualshock 4 now and see if it feels a little better 🤷♂️
Same, bought a second-hand PS4 Slim with 20 physical and 20 digital games for about equivalent 100 euros/112 USD from a friend in November 2020, got the remaster on sale that December, tried playing it and it seemed boring (didn't help that I had mostly been playing Bloodborne and hadn't ever played with a gamepad before, so a shooter felt pretty rough to my K+MB brain). Played TLOU this February while sick with covid and recovering from apendectomy, I wouldn't say I loved it but I still liked it a whole lot and was amazed how good this upscaled version of a 2013 game looked on my parents' shitty TV. Then I played Part II in March and was completely blown away by the way it looked, felt and presented its story. It's almost an unnnecessary level of detail and dedication and it truly cemented in my mind why having big budget exclusives like this is a good thing. There are no doubt other games with bigger or similar budgets, but none of them have this level of polish and attention to detail, mostly because it's expensive to do, which ND and Sony don't care about as much, apparently. Now playing through the The Nathan Drake Collection and although I thought UC1 was kinda mediocre, if pretty, Among Thieves is an amazing narrative action game and I can clearly see the visual and storytelling development ND went through from this through TLOU to TLOU Part II.
Can't wait to replay it on PS5. The game is great on PS4 Pro but that film grain and 28-30fps is definitely holding this masterpiece back. I'm also very curious how the gaming community is going to feel a few years down the line when all this irrational hate dies down. For those who are going to hate, just know that I've played the game and it is no less of a masterpiece than the first game. I'm going to be putting up an in depth analysis video on why the story is truly amazing and how it holds a dark mirror up to the previous installment. Truly a brilliant and important work of literary art and it's from a video game... If you love video games and gaming in general you should be celebrating this game, not hating it. The Last of Us and Part II have redefined what a "video game" is supposed to be. Games like these are why a hundred years from now, video games will be part of language arts curriculums in schools. Just like books and films. I really don't think gaming history will look favorably upon you if you're one of said irrational haters. I can understand the game not being for you and if you're one of _those_ people, my words are not meant for you. Although, to you I would say to reconsider. I've been analyzing this game from the perspective of a writer, filmmaker and gamer and I can tell you there is a lot of symbolism and a metric ton of thought and care went into crafting this narrative.
Thank you for writing this, it saddens me that not more people share your opinion. Is it horrible and unpleasant? Yes. But it is amazingly written. It is that way on purpose and it genuinely made me feel things that are new, and think about serious things. Even when people think they point at “plot holes” thay are actually touching on the things you should think about and they all have answers. I hope this will enable gaming to truly pass the line from entertainment to art. This is an amazing piece of art with deep meaning, which is complicated to understand, yet which could not be told otherwise, just by this artform.
Totally agree, I'm glad these haters obsessed with identity politics and trying to cancel anything perceived as woke seem to be an american only phenomenon, around where I live (switzerland, and europe in general) the game doesn't seem to be controversial, and for good reason as it's one of the best games I've played in a while. Anyway I'm looking forward to trying it on PS5 as well as it already looks gorgeous.
It's really nice to see someone who also loved the game, I feel like most people just gave up on trying to understand anything the game was trying to do when THAT twist happens.
John Linneman does this perfectly! I am rather glad he is part of the DF team. It really shows how much he cares about the games and that he truly appreciates what the console hardware cn achieve. It is a lot of fun to watch the video he has produced here. I am very much looking forward to his work when it comes to the PS5/XBSX games :)
@@weaverquest For me it sounds as if Alex and John are equally knowledgable when it comes to the tech. It is just that they are working differently. While others have stopped bothering with them a long time ago. I think John is very much appreciative when it comes to the art the developers have created within the constraints of the hardware. Agreed, kinda wish I could see a new Uncharted from ND on ps5 (although we will probably see one from the new San Diego studio), but a new ip or TLOU3 would be awesome as well, if they managed to push the PS4 this far, can't wait to see what they'll do next.
The game is pushing the CPU heavily even in lesser busy areas. You may think they'd be able to hit 60fps on Pro at 1080p, but ND's pushing both CPU/GPU heavily in this game. I've seen leaked footage of the build where CPU/GPU usage were visible on-screen and was surprised to see just how many quiet scenes were actually CPU-bound and had CPU-related frame-rate dips below 30fps, in this game.
Last of us part 2 made me feel really bad about FFVIII remake's graphics. Square Enix is kind of a big company. Couldn't they optimize FFVIII remake a bit better and figure out how to stream textures at the right resolution?
I think it was on purpose. Ff7remake wasn't going for the gritty look of the last of us. It's still a steampunk/manga type world, with bright colours and flowery magic displays. I think square did well to keep it as true to the original as they could. Without replicating block limbs.
@@AdamAdamHDL The art direction of FF7 remake is perfectly fine. I was referring to the texture streaming errors. Like textures not loading at all, backdrops being misaligned and sometimes appearing at the wrong resolution. @@Lanse1984 For me It doesn't feel like a typical final fantasy game because exploration is lacking. For example, One of the toughest bosses in the game is berried in a VR sim. I did enjoy it, I just believe it could have been more epic if they really wanted to.
On a purely technical standpoint, the game is an absolute masterpiece. This level of detail, world-building, storytelling and set pieces are a once in a decade experience for video games. Although the story is somewhat of a mixed bag, credit must be given where it's due. Hats off to team Naughty Dog.

Im really glad you touched on audio and sound design here.. not enough reviews are talking about it but honestly for me it was what made this experience so next level. It honestly would shake me to my bones sometimes with how incredible the sound design effects and combat theme worked together during combat encounters. The sound of a pipe smashing across an enemies face, the pop and tear when you would get shot or hit with and arrow and those rumbling basslines and ominous tones of the combat music just gave me chills. Granted i was using quality headphones and an external dac amp when playing but if you have the means to pick those things up yourself i would wholeheartedly reccomend you do.
regardless of the narrative issues, goddamm this game is a fucking stunnner. I found myself stopping and just soaking in the scenery a lot. On a technical level it's a masterful title and the people behind it deserves all the commendations that come their way and a huge ass raise.
What digital foundry focuses on: the art style and the sheer brilliance of how naughty dog achieved it. Numerous TH-camrs: the golf scene and a muscly woman.
Rockstar, Naughty Dog, and CD Projekt Red are in a master class. They don't rush IPs or give a fuck about audience expectations; they tell original stories that push the envelope, or in CD's case, they're extremely faithful and objective towards source material.
I agree. Their games have some issues, like all games anyway, but they truly know how to push the boundaries when it comes to technology. I think all this ridiculous controversy showed that they need to move on from The Last of Us, but I'm looking forward to what they can make with a new IP on ps5 (if they decide to go that way).
God damn I want Naughty Dog to make a VR game. It would probably be even more immersive than Half-Life: Alyx was, and that game looked jaw droppingly photoreal at times. Hopefully PSVR 2 gets a flagship Naughty Dog title for PS5.

@@weaverquest captivating narrative? I think I lost a few braincells when I read that.

I'm ready to have all expectations DESTROYED 🤣 but it'll be unlikely to top Naughty Dog's Magnum Opus which is Jak & Daxter 🤷♂️ sorry not sorry but it's true... Fight me bro 😂
@@MrRhysReviews haha - J&D is a classic, no doubt. Interestingly after finishing TLOU 1&2 I went and started playing Uncharted 4 again. Now, it IS a great game, buuuut, the weight of the fighting/shooting seems so light compared to TLOU, it was weird to play.
@@LemonJelly360 Yeah I'll get back to Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy (which I finally beat last night btw) to get the Plats (just need to get all the Collectables basically plus a few of the Misc. Tasks etc.) just started TLoU this afternoon and currently up to the town with Bill and I am definitely enjoying it so far...
@@MrRhysReviews I freaking love Jak and Daxter! All of them were great but Jak 3 was my favorite. Hbu?
Jean Lepage that’s your opinion
Thank you for writing this, it saddens me that not more people share your opinion. Is it horrible and unpleasant? Yes. But it is amazingly written. It is that way on purpose and it genuinely made me feel things that are new, and think about serious things. Even when people think they point at “plot holes” thay are actually touching on the things you should think about and they all have answers. I hope this will enable gaming to truly pass the line from entertainment to art. This is an amazing piece of art with deep meaning, which is complicated to understand, yet which could not be told otherwise, just by this artform.
The Last of Us 2 has a shitty story.
I think Alex has the best technical knowledge while John has the most insight on game design.
@@weaverquest For me it sounds as if Alex and John are equally knowledgable when it comes to the tech. It is just that they are working differently. John is very much into old games and old hardware, like older consoles and early PC hardware, to this day. He for example has a huge collection of old console games which he keeps around. While others have stopped bothering with them a long time ago. I think John is very much appreciative when it comes to the art the developers have created within the constraints of the hardware. Alex has a much different focus. And for sure has he different duties and responsibilities within DF.

Based on recent rumors, Square Enix might fix all that in a PS5 update for the game which they may charge $$ for.
