I can’t help but agree with what John Linneman said: they should’ve called this a Director’s Cut like what Ghost of Tsushima got because it’s very similar. They gave us some additional content, PS5 haptic support, and slight visual enhancements. Calling this a remaster is really overselling what this game is.
@@usul573 the main point of this is the PS5 version is full price, but if you upgrade from the PS4 version it's $10. Why do I mention Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut? It's the exact same deal. Very slight graphics improvements, haptic implementation, and some new stuff (Japanese lip syncing for Ghost of Tsushima, and TLOUp2's additions are even more significant.)
It is a remaster tho, I think people get confuse. Remasters, or when you change the games, visuals and add content, but without changing any of the code remakes are when you completely remake the game from the ground up.
It has been re-mastered, in other words, mastered/(compiled is the word we use for code) again. It fits the technical definition perfectly, yet not the colloquial definition.

The "No Return" game mode could have been an amazing couch co-op experience. PS5 should be able to handle split-screen quite well for this game, but sadly that isn't a thing anymore
The shot to Ellie at 4:27 basically shows that they replaced the render they did for the base game of the ending scene of Part 1 with how the PS5 remake of Part 1 does it. If you play both PS5 games back-to-back, it’s probably for the sake of consistency.
@@Roland2617 Yeah, I'm guessing they used the wrong model for that scene originally and no one on the development team noticed because young Ellie later in TLOU Pt II doesn't even look that way.
Not much of a graphical or technical upgrade. The game is still incredibly gorgeous across PS4 & PS5. However, that $10 upgrade is primarily justified by the new No Return survival mode, Lost Levels, & Developer Commentary.
Yea, It's kind of hard to argue with more levels and a game mode for pocket change. It kind of reminds me of the Xbox 360 days. Back then, DLC was dirt cheap. Now, it's more expensive than the game itself sometimes
Yeah thats pretty reasonable. Only thing i think that could have been handled better is MSRP if you dont own the Ps4 version. $50 is a lot considering TLOU2 Ps4 has been less than $20 for a while now Sony has been pricing their remasters/remakes this gen pretty high at launch, likely bc Nintendo did it too. Unfortunate, especially since the prices have been staying relatively high for many of these games 2-3 years later
I was disappointed with the visual modes until you reached the VRR support section. It's always amazing when developers support this, now I can either play at 1440p 75-100fps or 4K 40-60fps. Rather than just a locked 1440p60 on the updated build.
@@WreckerALeX it can only be done on a PS5 native version, no PS4 native game updated for PS5 has had LFC to my knowledge, which is essential for the 4K VRR mode at least. Maybe a toggle on the PS4 version to unlock the framerate is the most they could do (at 1440p). Still, this upgrade also has additional modes, so the $10 are for the extra content.
You're right. For me personally, a quality mode with native 4k + 120hz is something I would like in every PS5 game. However, I regret one thing: why this mode in TLOU Part 1 is not as smooth as here. They could release a patch for part one.
VRR implementation on the PS5 is as lazy and lacklustre as this "remaster" though, and only works over 48 fps. That means you're going to notice lot of stuttering and frame drops in the uncapped 40 fps 120hz mode.
*I wish Rockstar would offer a patch for RDR2* since I still haven't played while waiting for the 60fps mode (which apparently it can handle pretty well) Naughty added a free update and for $10, they have added so much more content, small fixes, and even the audio haptic feedback. And TLOU2 is 3.5 years old while RDR2 is 5 years old.
Exactly the pricing is pretty reasonable, just $10 if you already have the game and $50 if you’ve never played it which imo in the world of $70 games is definitely worth it

What i believe happened here is that devs at Naughty Dog knew that sooner or later the massive multiplayer project will not pan out as intended, and hence were forced by the studio to release atleast something to keep the brand image afloat while they put all their (newly freed) resources on an un-announced IP. This update/re-release feels like an attempt to keep fans pleased till some new project reaches the final stage.

I mean it's heavy use of baked lighting is the reason why. When you don't have to spend a ton of time on calculating your lighting and leaving it precalculated it frees up a lot of resources to be used on other elements like geometry and foliage
@@crestofhonor2349 It's not just the baked lightning. The geometry of characters, the animation, etc. It's really insane. The only thing that makes Alan Wake 2 look better in places is the lightning (due to ray tracing, path tracing, etc). However, once Naughtydog makes a truly current gen game, it'll blow people's mind.
@@awsomeboy360 That's why I said using baked lighting freed up resources to be used on other assets instead of spending a ton of rendering time calculating more real time lighting sources
@@crestofhonor2349 That's such a weird statement to say because Ray Tracing was barely in any games last gen. There was no ray tracing Ps4 games. So saying 'by them not using Ray Tracing it freed up space' is such a weird statement to say because there wasn't any intention to implement Ray Tracing for Last of Us Part 2 to begin with (or that the practice was even that huge back then). Despite this, Last of Us part 2 looks great even outside of lightning.
@@awsomeboy360 The statement had nothing to do with ray tracing though as rasterization still is real time lighting. Ray tracing was only less common due to the fact that only Nvidia cards could do ray tracing from 2018 to 2020. Shadow maps, Ambient occlusion, and other rasterized effects are still real time lighting. As I said, baked lighting frees up resources because it's precalculated. Typically baked lighting is calculated using ray tracing, typically at a low resolution as light maps can be quite storage heavy
The last of us already has more remakes and remasters than actual games. It's not enough to just be a slight difference when so many of its peers release similar upgrades for free.
If it was full price I'd agree, but 10 dollars is a bargain. This is also an industry changer in terms of giving us "Cut content" to actually play, I'd love to see that more in Remasters/Directors Cuts ect
@@traviscue2099 Lego star wars did it decades ago. I get that it may be worth it for some, but in the same way that a full $70 game might be. It's certainly no bargain. Again, a fair amount of games get bigger updates than this for free

@@traviscue2099 you misunderstood both points. TLOU from PS3 to PS4: 4x more resolution on Textures, better shadows, from native 720P to 1080P, double the framerate, better everything. TLOU2 from PS4 to PS5: More grass.
More grass you say? I was also skeptical about this Remastered, but after running the game in Fidelity mode with 120Hz and VRR... WOW, the old PS4 version hides
Great video as usual, but one small feedback- the graphics modes description is a bit confusing to be honest. It makes perfect sense after watching the whole video, but it really was confusing as all the modes were introduced without real structure. Would've been great to get an introduction table at the start of the graphics section.
Yeah agreed - Ollie is usually extremely good at structuring content. Explaining the modes upfront would have helped a bit as I just assumed it would have a fidelity and performance mode but it has 40fps and unlocked modes as well.
@@gkork6The Fidelity 4k mode can run at 40fps+ on a 120hz screen. The Performance 1440p mode can run at 60fps+ on a 120hz screen. The “visuals” he’s referring to is that there’s no difference in the graphics settings between and of the modes. The only differences are resolution and framerate.

I think the biggest reason for all the negativity and complaints is the "Remastered" in the title. This is an enhanced PS5 port with extra content, no remaster. If it was called "Definitive Edition" or "Director's Cut", the backlash wouldn't be this huge. But to be fair, this is still TLOU Part II, so some people will always keep complaining about this game.

I wouldn’t recommend paying $50 for returning players like me but $10? More than reasonable!
I just want all this to translate into a decent PC port, unlike Part I. It's incredible what they managed to pull off initially on PS4, and upon reading their Siggraph presentation , some of their shader / material work sounds very impressive & artist-friendly.
I mean, Part I was fundamentally decent in the way that even at release there was hardware that could run it well; it just broke down on weaker systems (to an unacceptable extent, of course). That's very different to say Jedi Survivor, that still doesn't run well even on the best hardware available.
Did they compensate the shutter angle of the motion blur for 60fps in this version? They didn’t do this in the back compat patch for the PS4 version, resulting in a big reduction in motion blur at the higher frame rate. I’m curious about the shutter angle and also the depth of field effects. Shutter angle and Bokeh DoF need to be turned up in intensity when the frame rate or resolution are increased, respectively speaking.
@@mattjudy6780 Definitely should have been free update especially considering we're going on 10 years without any new Last of Us online multiplayer. Not hard to port over the PS4's Remastered multiplayer, but they'd rather just milk this now-stale franchise to death. I thought the GTA5 and Skyrim releases were tiresome.
@@StillhetMusicseriously, we HAD a word and system for this already in place at the beginning of the generation. Calling this a remaster is a slight against actual remasters.
I think they are using this to plug a financial hole after the multiplayer collapse. I couldn't tell what was different from the free upgrade before this video. After the video I feel none the wiser as to why I should spend a tenner, for a horde mode I won't play, some unfinished levels and some commentary. This is the Emperors new clothes of remasters.
So, this is what I think. Naughty Dog had not planned to release a remaster of ToU2, not at least at this time since they were working with the multiplayer but when they had to canceled the multiplayer they decided to release this "remaster" with elements that they had already worked on for the multiplayer, such as the customizations of weapons.
I'd rather them do that, and put more effort into The Last of Us Part III - than worry about multiplayer right now. Finish the trilogy (if that's what it is) and then make an awesome multiplayer title set in that world at that point.
Field of view was already adjustable in the PS4 version, just hidden under the accessibility/motion sickness menu Granted, it looks like you can now adjust it more extensively than before, which is nice.
I can see why they let you upgrade for £10 as that's a decent price for the new mode. But it's strange how gow ragnarok with story content was given for free.
It's not a good comparison. GoW Ragnarok cost $10 more to get on PS5 over PS4, and similarly this costs $10 more to upgrade to a PS5 version. It's the same thing on paper.
I can agree with the comments criticising the use of the word *remastered* to describe the release, when it looks largely similar to the original game (post-PS5 patch)... but it already looked fantastic. Without the additions it would have been harder to justify at full-price, but with those and a £/$10 upgrade for it, it's a no-brainer for me.
@@strykah92 yeah but it sold very well, has glowing reviews and it's in desperate need of moving over to a platform where it will run at a higher framerate. Ideally PC in my case since I'm never getting a PS5
@@JAM92 I know it did, but it's still quite a long way away from Sony's top performers and it's not exactly baffling that they tend to be the ones that take priority. As far as any sort of patch/upgrade/port for Bloodborne specifically, my best guess (and this is just my own speculation) is that they need FromSoft's involvement in some way to make it commercially available and they're not playing ball, which is possibly also why OG Demon's Souls never got a PS4 version and we eventually got the PS5 Bluepoint remake.
The open world was bland, but this game has the best third person combat. The definition of immersion. When the bullet start flying and the heat is on it hits right in the gut. I own it on PS4 and can't wait for the PC port. I will buy day 1 just for the new survival mode.
I’m really thankful for DF’s deep dive on this title. I’m really torn…sure it’s $10USD, however it still feels like a money grab to me. It’s a title that’s been lightly reworked, in the sense of noticeable changes for end users - not remastered.
It’s a pure cash grab nothing more. As you say it’s only £10 but it’s the principle. They’ll do this more and more if people pay that money. For me … they can kiss my arse.. this is a piss take and I’m not interested in this franchise getting milked. I’m not being part of the problem I want new games ffs
It gives you access to PS5 things like high frame rates and VRR, it's worth it if you have a modern top TV. Ignore the other guy, an Xbox shill with its cute Gears of War videos on his channel lol
This feels like more of a director's cut of the game than a remaster. The extra content isn't bad, and considering they're allowing people to "upgrade" for $10 is nice for that extra content, but calling it a remaster is a stretch. They could have just either relabeled it to The Last of Us Part II director's cut or just straight up made the extra content paid DLC. The PS5 backwards compatible version of PS4 looked great and ran at 60fps. I'd literally need a magnifying glass to see any visual differences.
Just waiting on this to release on PC. I truly enjoyed Part 2 when it originally released. Hopefully they do a better job of porting this game than they did porting Part 1. Great Vid guys!!
Yeah I'm not interested in it on PS5. Providing the port is decent as you mentioned, a good PC will do it more justice. Don't think the value is there otherwise
@@StrixWar there’s absolutely no indication there are even plans to make a pc port of this game. It’s not even on the nvidia leak. And after how poorly received TLOU 1 on pc was that definitely isn’t gonna make sony rush out to get a port for part 2
Just as expected. If you own the original, there is almost no need to pick this up, especially with the 60fps patch for PS5, unless you're a superfan of the series.
It's subtle, and may just be a result of the remaster being darker overall, but to my eye there seems to be a little less inappropriate light bleed on at least on primary character assets in areas like under the arms, hair, between the thighs, and in the folds of clothing. It's the kind of improvement I normally associate with bent normals or some kind of tracing solution, but might also just be some kind of granularity bump to whatever system they were using before.
I played the original on a base PS4 on a 1080p TV and it looks and plays amazing. I now have a PS5 and a larger 4k TV and I worry I won't be able to tell a difference with the new version besides 60 fps. I never did try the PS4 version on the PS5.
The animations are on an other level even today. And I never saw a more realistic and dense forest. I'll give them the 10 bucks and play around with the new content. Can't wait though for an only PS5 Title from Naughty Dog
Gamers are blind. Blame Xbots or trolls. Naughty Dog runs circles around most gaming developers especially when it comes to visuals and animation. No one comes close.
Have you seen cauldron Lake in Alan Wake 2 ?? Or even the jungle /forest sections in Horizon Forbidden West ?? Both are way more detailed than in TLOU2.
The main draw here definitely isn't the visual improvement. It's the dualsense haptics and the additional roguelike mode for me. Definitely worth the $10 considering it's more than a visual upgrade.
I bought TLOU2 for 10 euros a few months ago. Played it on the PS5 at 60FPS. Can't imagine paying full price for the PS5 version. Literally not worth it.
To me, 40 fps fidelity mode seems like the main selling point here; however, even though the upgrade price is relatively low (and around 20% more expensive in the UK than in the US), it’s still more than the reduced price of the TLOU2 base (£8.74), which the game was available for during pretty much every sale since the late 2022. Based on what DF showed us, I don’t think that the upgrade is worth buying if you got the base game on sale.
I find it really interesting that here DF are effectively saying "it's the same," but when they were comparing PS5 to PS5 Pro recently, they were trying to sell it as an enormous difference.
Basically just uncapped frame rate and vrr support and more native 4k options. And they retooled some of the lighting and reframed some shots and did some slight tweaks to the character models for certain scenes. And they threw in a new game mode and gave us some cut content. Sounds like an alright package.
Online co-op No Return mode would have been awesome, but I can't wait as I am 200 hours into the game many playthroughs and TLOU2 might be one of my all-time fav games, so no issue shelling out $10 to Sony and ND.
Honestly this game's AA implementation is so good that the 1440p output just looks like a slightly imperfect and moodier camera lens. Is it weird that I prefer it to the "pixel perfect" 4K?
At this point, I won't be surprised if ND is working on a Ps5 Pro remaster for TLOU1 remaster. They have clearly mastered the art of milking the same cow again & again.
@@KaneK1234missing out on an awesome game mode. Added at least another 15 hours of gameplay for me. Why are you pretending the slight visual upgrade is what the ten dollars is for? The meat of the price is the new content, not visual upgrades.
The Ps4 version has a free patch. The performance mode is 100% identical to this new ps5 version. If you really want to play it, get the ps4 version. Save your money.
Regarding Ambient Occlusion (6:31), maybe the increase in resolution makes the game render more foliage on top of the AO of the foliage behing thus making the image looking like it lacks depth when in reality, there's just more things rendered in front of the AO, blocking the shadowy effect. This is a phenomenon similar to what appens in GTA V regarding anti-aliasing: when using MSAA, the game makes the grass look kind of transparent, which makes it look like it lacks some detail compared to classic FXAA ; the explanation lies in the fact that it just renders too many samples and just can't show them, making it look transparent on anything below 4K.
I love TLOU but I'm disappointed that they want $10 for the upgrade if you already own it on PS4. On the other hand, Capcom released RE2R AND RE3R with PS5 upgrades for free if you already own the PS4 version. I get naughty dogs thinking but I wonder what went into it... did they rewrite code or basically just change graphics settings and change the buffer frequency for loading times. Either way I want the remaster so I gotta come up with $10.
I don’t like the DualSense so I rather choose PS4 version, except for the new content I would like to try. The horse riding vibration felt really bad on Sense compared to DS4. RE2 and 3 remake runs better locked 60fps on PS4 version too on PS5.
Not being able to deliver a native 4K60 in the performance mode is deeply disappointing. Which makes upgrading to this even harder to justify when the back compat version is already so good.
Big problem of original Tlou2 - lot places where Shadows just turned OFF, must places in Serafits levels, like Garage and Shop (from E3 trailer). Also very small draw distance for Serafits models and their clothes.
@@Lord_ofcinder They run on the same engine and are made in the same standard, it's not like only in Part 1 you can enable translucency on foliage shaders and in Part 2 you can not, it's a decision by the dev team to leave it looking worse in Part 2 compared to Part 1.
Why did I bother watching any other review besides Digital Foundry XD You guys always take comparisons and analysis to another level. Thanks for your team's work :)
It looks great, and I ordered the WLF edition from Playstation. But this is really a directors cut. Wish they spent more time developing this to add ray tracing and increased models to earn the "remaster" title.
I never played the original so if I can get a PS5 this year this will be 1 of many game that I will buy for sure. What I wonder is if PlayStation plans on doing more of these PS5 'refined' re-releases.
I said it before and I'll say again: Sony is dropping the ball and missing out on an amazing opportunity to add a VR mode to games like these. I loved the first game. Part 2 was a disappointment for me but if they added a VR mode I'd replay Part 2 in an instant. They wouldn't need to change to a 1st person perspective (although it would be appreciated if they gave that option) because 3rd person would still work. Gran Turismo 7 VR mode should have been step 1 for alot of 1st party titles for PSVR2. And they could offer usage for it on PC with their PC releases. Doing that would offer content while original VR games are developed. And a VR mode would give Remasters/Remakes more value and options for play and give a compelling reason to but the headset. COME ON SONY!
How we haven't got a small stand-alone God of War VR game (or experience) is mind boggling. Throwing Kratos' axe and recalling it in VR would be fantastic. Fingers crossed 🤞
Would you be happy if they just called it "no return" dlc and charged 10 dollars? The meat and potatoes of the ten dollars is the entire new game mode that gets you hours of new gameplay. The slight visual upgrades is just the cherry on top.
They called this a ''remaster'' to leech off the good reputation of actual remasters that seek to salvage/restore/preserve a piece of work, for the first game I understand calling the PS4 port a ''remaster'', but for this it's exactly what it is, a ''port''.
$50 is a lot considering TLOU2 Ps4 has been less than $20 for a while now

I was disappointed with the visual modes until you reached the VRR support section. It's always amazing when developers support this, now I can either play at 1440p 75-100fps or 4K 40-60fps. Rather than just a locked 1440p60 on the updated build.
They could do this with the old ps4 version but why not charge more?

For someone who has not played this game yet, can't wait to play this game.
The Ps4 version has a free patch. The performance mode is 100% identical to this new ps5 version. If you really want to play it, get the ps4 version. Save your money.
@@WH250398 You're incorrect.
@@LughLamhfhada0609 1440p 60fps. The only enhancements are the plants. Woohoo.
@@WH250398loading times. In the original you have around 90 seconds vs 15 seconds in Remaster. I agree it's not a huge deal but still
@@WH250398 You made a factually incorrect statement, I was merely correcting you.
I’m sure 4K/60fps could have been hit if ND had put more resources into the remaster.
Big problem of original Tlou2 - lot places where Shadows just turned OFF, must places in Serafits levels, like Garage and Shop (from E3 trailer).
Also very small draw distance for Serafits models and their clothes.
So no real visual upgrades, lame.... This makes Part 1 look way better than part 2 now. I was hoping they could at least make them look the same.
Are people just collectively stupid ? part 1 is a remake part 2 is a remaster.
It doesn't look way better at all
Part 2 looks better in a lot ways than part 1
@@Lord_ofcinder They run on the same engine and are made in the same standard, it's not like only in Part 1 you can enable translucency on foliage shaders and in Part 2 you can not, it's a decision by the dev team to leave it looking worse in Part 2 compared to Part 1.
@@TheMrLeoniasty That is so LAZY of them holy sht.
I love everything I saw on this video. I'm definitely buying this. One of my favorite games. Im especially interesting in the Lost Levels
Why did I bother watching any other review besides Digital Foundry XD You guys always take comparisons and analysis to another level. Thanks for your team's work :)
Its honestly so good that i would call it a remake, like they need to sell this for 70$ imo.
Calling it a remaster is joke.
Surely you jest
It looks great, and I ordered the WLF edition from Playstation. But this is really a directors cut. Wish they spent more time developing this to add ray tracing and increased models to earn the "remaster" title.
what’s worse is that they didn’t even add ray tracing
game already struggles at 4k mode, raytracing prolly would be barely working for 1080p 60 fps...
@@JakeMasterss cuz ps5 cant handle that lol, unless its light RT like reflections used in SM2
So happy we have digital foundry to level set buzz words and save everyone money.
Naughty Dog's next game: The Last of Us 1 Remake Remastered, then The Last of Us 2 Remastered Remake
I never played the original so if I can get a PS5 this year this will be 1 of many game that I will buy for sure.
What I wonder is if PlayStation plans on doing more of these PS5 'refined' re-releases.
Bloodborne please for the love of all that is good and green in this world.

VR just isn't popular.
Third person really does not support VR. Can it be done? Yes, but it is subpar. The point is immersion, not a following someone around simulator.
@@guser7137moss is a great game and is third person performer in vr. Try again
@@alexandrebelair4360 They start releasing games like Tlou and GoW in VR it's gonna get popular pretty damn fast.
Could have been a patch. A free patch...
It's a separate native version. It could have been a free upgrade but not a free patch. Although it does have new content in it.
It’s $10… but that lamp now looks amazing!
Would you be happy if they just called it "no return" dlc and charged 10 dollars?
The meat and potatoes of the ten dollars is the entire new game mode that gets you hours of new gameplay. The slight visual upgrades is just the cherry on top.
@@farhan007 please contact Naughty Dog. My fellow human being, you have better marketing ideas than they do.
Remaster, but nothing changed just the resolution😂😂😂😂😂
They called this a ''remaster'' to leech off the good reputation of actual remasters that seek to salvage/restore/preserve a piece of work, for the first game I understand calling the PS4 port a ''remaster'', but for this it's exactly what it is, a ''port''.
Words don't mean what they mean anymore, everything now is a grade
Remaster = everything is good!!!!!
Remake = might be mixed/ too different
Port = who cares
Couldn’t agree more. The PS3/360 era was the peak of gaming in my option. I hope the publishers get back to basics soon
PS2 has incredible stuff too :)
Now you can see Abby's jacked arms in slightly better clarity. Intimidating!
Now this is why we need a ps5 pro, fidelity mode at 60fps is where we going
And it’s why the 8K logo on the PS5 box is such a nonsense

Very cool coverage! Just love you guys, personally I have no interest in playing through TLOU2 again. Between working in retail in the pandemic at the time and going through a nasty break up it was a very dark toxic combo to mix binge playing TLOU2 in lol.
And it's a long game that you need to want to play again. Like you, I'm not that interested
After finishing Returnal, their only new IP of this gen, I have no reason to turn on my PS5. And if I want to replay it, I'll do it on PC. This gen so far is so freaking boring.

That would be fair... but you should know that it's a way optimistic outlook on it, considering it's Sony
Playing this game on 4k vrr with framerate unlocked is absolutly stunning.
it sure is, game was already beautiful but this is a whole other level of clarity and detail.
So is the fact that you can't spell the word absolutely.
I've still gotta play through this game eventually. Wonder if it will come out for PC someday.
They could have done more with the visuals. Big letdown.
Seems their work began and ended with writing the list of visual changes.
