See how everyone feels about the 16 Star run is how I feel about the Metroid Zero Mission World Record like.... Where is the mistake. Where is the time loss. Cos I sure as shit don't see any
I wasn't expecting to see Fire Sea BLJ anytime soon in 16 star, but it is due time for 0 and 1 star to implement it. The timesave is simply too juicy for such short categories
It was a nearly flawless execution of the known strats at the time. I don't think anyone ever thought it was literally perfect or that new strats could never be discovered.
The beautiful thing about speedrunning is how new strats and timesaves get incorporated into the run over time, and it's going to be a crazy year for SM64 ahead, I can feel it. Loving the content, keep it up!
Does anyone remember the Matthias Rustemeyer saga in Mario Kart 64, where he got so close to holding every WR category simultaneously, but the community rose to the occasion, and kept picking off his records just as he almost got the sweep. I'm hopeful that a similarly dramatic period will unfold in Mario 64 now, with a sort of reversal of rolls, where Suigi finds a way to jump from category to category, preserving his sweep, as the community attacks from all sides to break the sweep.
Matthias spent years trying to get every world record in MK64 but ultimately fell short. One of his rivals later went on to achieve this feat by hoarding multiple world records at once and not releasing them immediately to give him an unfair advantage since the community wouldn’t know would records they would need to improve and would also have more to deal with when the WR dump would happen.
@@brandonhowell9520 very short answer: yes Short answer: Watch SummoningSalt video about Matthias Vs Dan and then watch Abyssoft video about it for the outcome Long answer: Matthias Rustemeyer is basically the best MK64 player of all time, by the time he joined the community and started getting World Records nobody was close to his records, Matthias was gona try get all 32 world records and then the community in a competitive spirit tried to stop him in numerous times, in a desperate attempt Dan Burbank hoarded many records and released them all at the same time so Matthias couldn't recover and by doing so Dan snitched his way to the 32/32 in the scummiest way possible.
Story of every speedrun world record, omg it’s never going to be beaten. 1 year later, new glitch found, breaks everything and it now takes half the time
I think it’s unfair to say that Slip isn’t capable of beating the WR but weegee is, despite slip having the better PB and running the category more actively. Both are capable IMO. Good video though
definitely understand that and I love slip, but he hasn't rly had any insane runs that could beat the 14:35 yet, but I think he is def on track to get there esp if he were to add smn like fsblj
Is it so different from when cg replaced props? Won’t we just find new ways to work with the tools available to do more interesting things? There will be a Michael bay who ruins everything he touches by over-utilizing the new tools, but there’ll be Spielbergs who walk an interesting line too
There's also Krythalith's setup for LJBLJ (Lobby Stairs Backwards Long Jump), a faster way to get into Dark World that saves around 5 seconds but requires godlike mashing. It doesn't seem like runners want to implement this yet but with the record so tight I could see it happening eventually, since it's right at the very beginning of the run
As someone who’s been spectating SM64 speedrunning, both RTA and TAS, for nearly 2 decades now… I’mma be real, the ultimate RTA SM64 speedrun in each non-120 star category is gonna have to use a BLJ on the elevator to the pipe in BiTS. That’s my postulate for now.
I realized something about Suigi's runs: he plays so immaculately that mistakes seem obvious when watching (this is more apparent in his 70 and 120 runs). I love watching both Suigi and Weegee grind/practice, since it clearly shows that practice is a major key to their success.
The pacing of this video was fantastic! … the effects were awesome and didn’t feel too much, instead they just added to what I was hearing you say … i agree with another commenter, one of your best videos yet
Nice video! This truly is an exiting time to be a fan of SM64 speed running! Really excited to see if the 14:35 will be beaten in 2025. I don’t think it is realistic to get the same amazing MIPS clip again in an actual run so the time saves for all the other tricks must also compensate for that. I guess only time will tell 🙂
Just want to say thanks for making these videos Trey! While i tune in to some sm64 speedrun streams every now and then it's easy to miss these bigger trends and goals of the community. Love your videos, your stuff is a very welcome addition to the speedrun content on youtube 🥰 //dedecimator
Great video! If Weegee is grinding the category now it's really a matter of time, but not so much because of new strats, mostly because Weegee is good enough to take the record in any category if he is motivated to do it. It's going to be pretty tough though. Even if the next record implements all of the new time saves it will need to be nearly flawless in every part of the run to beat Suigi's record.
This. Not only do you have to incorporate all these new strategies, you still have to perform them and the rest of the run nearly flawlessly. Possible, yes. But it's still going to be very hard
This is the best video yet at explaining the path to beating 14:35. Whenever I watch a speedrunning video this well done, I wonder if Karl Jobst is going to make his own version of this video topic linking back here. I've been right about that multiple times already.
Considering that Carpetless is basically mandatory in 120 star for WR (an hour and a half into a good run btw), it's hard to rule out any strat as being off the table these days.
Hello, There is another trick that could save around 4-5secs. Instead of the normal LBLJ, you could BLJ on the first left stairs, so you would skip the door animations. It will take some time to clip the door, but it would be faster. This trick is humanly possible, but really hard. (There's a TAS variation of this where you pause buffer, but I don't mean that.)
A perfect speedrun performed by humans doesn't exist but when speedruns come to the point of the most optimized strats and even tas strats, it's quite capable that human expectations can be beaten with the mindset to grind. You know a run is getting pretty optimized when the timesave is in the details to save half a second here and there.
I get that it’s possible but to get all that adds more chances for mistakes and the probability of hitting all those is like hitting the lotto I think suigis run and Minecraft wr are gonna be the longest lasting spr for a while
Just a curiosity since you didn't bring it up: are we considering the punch out of the door for Mips a strat in the route? Because, as far as I understood, it's a very lucky and rare case that saves a whole second, so strat wise I'd assume it would be better to remove 1s off the calculations? Or instead runners are anyway aiming for that punch and so it will eventually be landed together with the rest? Or instead there's now a setup for it?
@@treybordo yeah, obviously you can still beat it with a slower Mips, I was wondering about the time estimate, but nice to hear there's a faster setup!
@@Nico2718_ With the faster setup it's possible to tie suigi's segment so I just didn't mention it. It's the same odds as before, so I didn't think of it as a timeloss/save but it is around a second if it isn't hit
I tought it was the perfect speedrun because Suigi didn't make a major mistake, that was the key to archived such time. The question here is, can he or anyone archive another run without any major or minor mistake?

I'm pretty sure Slip does the double burn strat for Bully. Saying that this strat isn't viable because weegee and suigi aren't doing it /are saying it isn't viable, while at the same time suggesting Slip isn't capable of beating the WR (although I agree he is probably the least likely of the three to beat it) doesn't feel right to me.
