Slim obscure mechanic: In the Mimi chase sequence in 2-4, using Slim before Mimi enters the room causes her to not know you are in the room, so she looks around a little and, because she thinks you are in another room, just teleports out to look for you.
Another Dottie obscure mechanic: You know the mushrooms pulled by a rope in chapter 2-2? Those are normally unobtainable, but with Dottie you can go through the rope hole and finally get back at Mimi by getting the mushroom. (Also Merlee why is your mansion still trapped when you end chapter 2? Lazy much?)
Another Barry obscure mechanic: In the PAL version (the one I play), Barry got a nerf. Barry usually can reflect projectiles, like those of Ruff Puff and Cherbils (which are the same in this version), but the proyectiles of some enemies like Boomboxers and Magiblots actually crash with the barrier and dont get reflected as easily, and have to be approached while moving in that direction with some momentum to actually get reflected
Funnily enough I knew that as a 10 year old because I tried everything to escape the terrifying invincible spider monster and saw that Slim made me invincible as long as I stood still.
YET ANOTHER obscure mechanic for Brobot L-Type: If you place a bomb during his suction attack, he will actually suck it up and it will explode on the inside dealing damage! This boss is so well designed. You can counter literally all of his attacks using a different ability, yet you'll never see any of this on a normal playtrough.
Another obscure mechanic is if you got to chaper 2-3 and try to get 1M rubys with the wheel, the game speed goes up and a bunch of videos and images appear on your screen
there's an obscure Thoreau easter egg i discovered as a kid after killing an enemy, you have a few seconds before it explodes and gives you points. if you use Thoreau to pick up the enemy when its dying, it will play a special dizzy animation as ur holding it. i believe this works on every non-boss/invincible enemy, and to my knowledge the animations aren't used elsewhere (i never used status effect items much, so maybe the animations are also used for when an enemy is dizzy, but who cares man its a neat easter egg regardless) EDIT: i checked the mario wiki, and apparently this also happens if you pick up the same enemy after throwing them, before they can recover
Two things: it's probably not that obscure, but you didn't mention that Carrie is what allows Bowser to use fire in midair. Also, the only way to cure a status effect in the game other than Piccolo is by using the Slimy Extract, which is obtained by cooking a slimy shroom, which is obtained by purchasing the midrange package at the flopside inn and flipping into 3-D in the morning. Why they did this is beyond me. Bonus: one of the most cost efficient healing items in the game is Ink Pasta, which requires ink from a blooper and a fresh pasta bunch. It heals 25 HP
Unless the status effect is poison, of course, as seemingly every single HP healing item (outside of the ones that heal over time) mentions. It seemed really weird to me when I first played and it still seems weird to me to be honest, I don't recall poison even coming up that much.
@@hoodedman6579 Strangely enough Poison was an odd status effect in the first Paper Mario. The item meant to cure it, the Tasty Tonic, is less effective than healing with a standard Mushroom because the effect of poison is just so weak. The only other thing it cures is Shrink, which is a powerful debuff but so rare it's not worth keeping cure for, and Eldstar cures both anyways
So the reason the beatboxers are stunned by the bombs is due their extremely good hearing so of course an explosion would disrupt them. This can be discovered by the tippi skill
Its me, the guy who taped his wii remote down as a child, coming back in the morning to that pitiful amount of rubles before I realized there was a hidden pixel and felt so stupid finding it after devoting six further hours to hamptering.
this video is speedrunner approved. Just something small to mention for the Amazee Dayzee Card grinding you can use regular catch cards as long as your level is high enough
Non Obscure Mechanic (that I’ve never seen you perform): After jumping on an enemy you can shake your Wii remote to trick in mid air. This trick gives you more experience the more times you perform it before touching the ground, but you are only able to perform one trick per enemy bounce, meaning you have to keep bouncing on enemies to trick more. Maybe Obscure Mechanic: Based on how you shake your Wii remote to trick, you will perform a different trick. They are all functionally identical (maybe they can vary on time taken to perform the trick, I don’t know sorry).
I love reading the Wiki page on the various Sammer Guys, especially Tippi's various tattles, which provides a fun little quirk of each character pertaining to their life outside the ring, like how Zesty Recipe makes gooey brownies for the Sammer Guy break room on a daily basis.
Here’s another obscure fact: if you somehow manage to skip getting a Pixl, the game has failsafe dialogue that will play before the End of Chapter dialogue.
Although strangely enough, this isn't the case for Thudley, Fleep or Cudge (who are impossible to skip anyway since you cannot progress without their abilities)
putting the single most well known obscure mechanic on the thumbnail so terminally online nerds will show up and be like "HA, bet i already know this crap!"
Oh yeah, as a kid I dived head first into filling out all my recipes from the kitchen, so there aren't any items I didn't know about. I don't know why, but getting all that cooking done was just a lot of fun for me.
If Thudley’s speedrun application gets to be included, then Slim’s should also be mentioned Using Slim plus a gold bar, you can go out of bounds in practically every room from my understanding. This allows for countless speed run tricks, with the most famous skip being able to skip the Florosapian’s scanner room, making the Thudley jumps to access the O. Chunk’s fight completely unnecessary. :3 Edit: It wasn’t mentioned in the video at all, so I figure I should throw this out there. If you’re looking to grind money in this game for catch cards or Tippi tron, buy mystery boxes. That sounds weird, but hear me out. Mystery boxes are sold at the Cragnon shop for 3 coins each. You only need 30 coins to fill your inventory. Take them to the Flipside kitchen. Mystery Boxes usually result in a mistake when cooked, but have a special chance to cook into a verity of recipes. These recipes sell for around 10-90 coins EACH. I am not kidding. It doesn’t matter if you roll 7/10 mistakes, because so long as you get at least 3 10 coin recipes, you will make money. Go back to the Cragnon shop, sell all your recipes, and buy 10 more mystery boxes. I figured this out because I was 100%ing the game. When you buy stuff from shops, you get a store point, and you need 300 store points in order to get the Whacka card from the point rewards. I started at 150 points or so, and went until I got 300. So how much money did I make? Well, considering I hit the max cap of 999 coins 3 times during the process, I’d say I made out like a bandit. Took a while, but it was much faster than running the Pits over and over. BTW, don’t sell your stuff at the shops in Flip or Flopside. Things there are more expensive than other world shops, and sell for much less. Do all your purchases at Cragnon’s shop, it’s much cheaper.
I just learned this yesterday from an older video of fighting every boss in 3D, but did you know you can get certain bosses (and most enemies) stuck in the opposite plane (2D/3D) by using Thoreau to grab them and flipping into 2D/3D? It's funny, I never thought about doing that and the only time I've technically done it is when the game makes you do it for the Red Bridge guy. The game was trying to tell us it was possible haha.
This is late but did you know in TTYD you can press A to make Flurrie do her body slam early, or press A to make Lakilester throw his spiny faster in Paper Mario 64? I notice a lot people don't do this, and instead choose to wait a little
14:03 And the thing about this is that one of the grandmas you meet in Chapter 7-2 does tell you about it! She suggests you use an object that does music if you have any.
For the longest time, I thought that because the vault in 2-3 exists, and because of Mimi's dialogue when you pay off the loan, there had to be something coded into the level that would prevent you from collecting 1000000 rubees through either of the labor rooms. My thought was that after you earned a certain amount of rubees, the game wouldn't let you work for anymore unless you gave Mimi what you'd collected up to that point, and then after you did that she'd spout some kind of interest nonsense that would put your debt right back to 1000000.
Okay I wanna add some funny things towards to things in this video: First of all here an obscure mechanic for Slim: Slim is actually one of the most powerful Pixls in the game. How so? Well there is a speedrunning Glitch called "Goldbar Clips". For this glitch you throw a goldbar near a wall in 3D, jump while having Slim activated in the direction of the wall and into the Goldbar, open the quick menu by pressing 1+2 at the same time and then switch to a different pixl while holding in the direction of the wall then. This glitch allows you to clip out of bounds literally everywhere in the entire game and is in this regard even more powerful then Thudley since most Thudley jumps got replaced by Goldbar Clips in speedruns (also Goldbar Clips are super easy so go ahead and try them out yourself (: ) Second is related to the ending of the video: The game actually has another failsafe for every Pixl besides Thudley and Cudge. This failsafe makes it that you will get your Pixl regardless if you have opened the chest or not. The funny thing is that in speedruns the only Pixl that don't have a glitch to skip them are Thudley and Cudge (yes you could farm the 1million rubies in the wheel and then do an easy glitch to skip Slim, but you will get them back still) which is obviously perfect since we wouldn't get them back from the game if we could. The game even has special textboxes for this failsave after completing the chapter where you were supposed to get the Pixls. (: There are obviously a lot more obscure mechanics I could mention about this game (Bonus one: In Flopside there is an Artist NPC, if you interact with him while playing Peach he will change her hair) but those are the things I mainly wanted to mention here. (:
I could have sworn that if you backwards slide on the hampter wheel you could get rubies just a bit faster. Like, it takes a bit of trial and error but if I remember correctly you gotta run right, change directions, jump left, then slide while facing left to preserve momentum. I remember the light for earning rubies going faster as a kid on my console.
Obscure mechanic for Barry: if you land on an enemy while using Barry, you’ll get two hits, one from the jump and one from Barry. Landing on the enemy cancels Barry’s animation and gives you a bounce while the enemy gets knocked away from you due to the recoil from getting hit by Barry. If the enemy is spiky or otherwise invulnerable to jumps, only Barry will get a hit, so you won’t bounce and the animation won’t cancel, and only Barry will inflict damage.
23:00 It's me. I was that kid. I did exactly that because i couldn't figure out that level. When I woke up to basically nothing, I told my brother about it. He didn't play the game, but he was very active on GameFAQs and helped me by asking on there.
While running with Dashell, if you jump and hover with Peach, she keeps her momentum as long as you don't change direction. This trick lets you gain enough distance to go over spiked floors where you're intended to use Carrie.
22:58 I was that kid to an extent. I taped the D-pad of the Wii Remote so Mario always went forward, then would switch the HDMI to actual television and watch an episode of Spongebob, then went back. It took me a while to catch on, but I eventually realized I was only making 18000 Rubees every time, so I would check like every 5-8 minutes afterward. I got bored of it around the 100,000 mark and just did the vault instead.
Theres one thing about Barry that wasn’t mentioned, Barry can deflect projectiles, some can damage the enemies back, this isn’t the most useful thing but it is still worth mentioning.
Obscure Mechanics List: Did you know that using Fleep instantly sends you into 2d from 3D? No need for an animation. Very good for when you need to kill an amazy dayzee. The sammerguys are programmed only for the current line they're standing on, so if bowser's fire is slightly below or above them, they'll continue walking and jumping into it as if there's no hazard, while they run away if bowser is on the same level as them. Using fleep twists the entire area selected, not just one thing. So there's a neat thing in the Brobot L fight where if you use fleep right as the missile spawns the game crashes! Or more specifically, fleeping both Brobot AND the Missile at the same time. This also works with the fist but it's a much tighter timing. (Tested on Official Hardware, crashed all three times.) In space, Carrey works completely different, instead moving you in a 2d space. In 2D you can move freely, but in 3D you can only go forwards, backwards, left and right. You are unable to change height Bowser cannot climb ladders. Beetles, and spinies and clefts are immune to fire, but lose their immunities and defense when being flipped over by boomer. You can use Ghost shrooms as a replacement for Poison Shrooms in any recipe. Using the Return pipe at count bleck's instead brings you to flopside tower, everywhere else brings you to Flipside Tower. Funny Mistakes: Using slim in 3D makes you turn 2d. So instead of slim making you seem invisible you actually disappear from existence. And finally: Exploits and weird trivia! Luigi can singlehandedly maneuver every single none 3D required section in the game BESIDES the long pit at count bleck's and the over there gap, which requires peach. The "Retired Adventurer" in Flipside is telling the truth! The grandmother, merluvlee and the map seller tell this fact, with the grandmother referring to him as the adventurer, Merluvlee telling of Piccolo being in the abandoned house of an adventurer, and the map seller finding the maps of an adventurer in that same house! He is also the only person in flipside and flopside to not have a counterpart (besides the casino goers), as he owned the houses for both flip and flopside. For some reason, you can infinitely combo the Big Sammerguys with Barry because they take longer to recover from his stun. The Mega Blooper is the only enemy unable to be inspected by Tippie, or Tiptron. Holding down during the countdown while using bowser in the sammerguy fights will always make it so the enemy gets hit before they're able to attack you, but if they're a jumping/laser guy or a big sammerguy, then they instead will hit you first. So this tactic works on around... 80 of the 100 sammerguys. On the same note, for Jumping guys, they always jump the same distance. So if you jump slightly backwards and hold down, they'll jump into the fire anyways and can't hit you. After getting Slim, you can return to the Mushroom Traps in Merlee's Mansion, you can go through the small gaps and actually get the mushroom, along with finding the pulley system in it's own room. Among all of Bower's troops that work for the count it is said that every single one resisted the count, except ONE goomba, who turned on Luigi voluntarily. Sky Juice can made by any apple from the Overthere, EXCEPT the Black one which creates a mistake. This is because it tastes absolutely horrible. Selling a cooked version of any item sells for more than the buy price for that item, EXCEPT Ultra Shrooms which only sells for 180 coins, a 120 coin loss. Shooting stars sell for 225 coins after being cooked into meteor meals, while a regular shooting star only sells for 46 I believe. It also becomes an automatic success, so always cook your shooting stars.
This might be an obscure fact about the Ninjohn enemy - they strongly resemble the Garo enemies from Majoras Mask, who also explode when they are defeated.
swuigs only let you bounce on a few shots and atop firing until you hit the ground, but while you're on carrie you're considered grounded even in the air
I’m pretty sure the emergency ration and space food lists their special attribute in their description. Just open it up in the item inventory, hover over the item, and hit down on the d-pad and it’ll show a second page of the description
Here's a super obscure mechanic about the Megabite family. If you pause the game with + near one of those, it will flip to the opposite direction every pause, meaning you can manipulate it's direction.
he forgot about the fact that the dragons still move during switching to 3d so its easier to do the trick and if your good enough you can jump on the antenna directly with Mario. also Thudley jumping is a 1 frame window after canceling
Yeah Fleep is a lot more useful than people give him credit for. Not only can he solve pulze and find secrets but he can also stun enemies stop projectiles and even one shot the Mr. I’s so you don’t have to circle around them.
Funnily enough, the Thoreau/Boomer strat at 6:05 is actually how I hit the switch that unlocked the Flipside Pit lol. Can't remember where I first learnt it but I thought it would be funny to try and make the shot from a couple blocks away
Did you know that using peach’s parasol for a very long time during the final boss fight, will cause dimentio to shake his skirt and summon a bunch of Luigi pal pill enemies which will run at you. They’re extremely fragile and will die on contact with the parasol but it’s a very neat mechanic
Dude, this is my favorite game of all time... AND YOU DARE THINK I DONT KNOW EVERY SINGLE DETAILS ABOUT THIS GAME ??? Im joking, this an amazing video. Every super paper mario video is a good video
I'm not sure but I think groundpounding the floor revealing Francis might have been used in future games like 3D world where groundpounding also doing the same with invisible blocks and enemies
I like how you make a game that is way too easy for experienced platform gamers into an actual challenge, and thus make the most of it's mechanics. Dottie and Peach are still broken though. I wonder how hard it would be to beat the pits of 100 trials at level 1 without either of them, or if it's even possible to do it without capture cards.
I got an obscure mechanic I have seen like one video show off and nobody else. If you use Peach during Super Dimentio and try to use her parasol to get invincible, he will summon an army of tiny Luigi pal pills to try n knock her into him. I have seen this in one video (a 5 hour video by I believe Yoshter called "in defense of super paper mario" if i remember right. i watch a lot of SPM videos). this is such a neat little attack and i have not seen anyone talk about it. It's also shown on Super Dimentio's mario wiki page!
17:07 : I always buy regular Catch Cards instead, and somehow...catching Amazy Dayzees with those still works 100% of the time. However, I didn't know entering this pipe respawns the enemies outside. oO
I thought that Piccolo was required for the Underchomp lmao, so I had to do 7-2 over again. I don't remember why, I think some NPC hinted that a Pixl could put them to sleep?
Honestly, I wish they redid Super Paper Mario a bit more - like yeah it's a nice celebration of Mario content but as an active RPG it basically needs more "depth" in its combat. 🥁
Actually, you can skip Slim in 2-3. The top part of the cage is intangible as long as you move diagonally, for an example you can check out an any% speedrun.
The "shell trick" feels so weird to me lol I remember trying it in the game but instead of it giving you negative points it just broke the shell. I'm probably misremembering though
You didn’t know this about slim did you? You can actually clip through any wall with him and to do this you need to buy a gold bar which can be found in either flip side of flop side I can’t remember and either in 2d or 3d use the gold bar so your character throws it against a wall but make sure it lines up with the wall, make sure it’s not too far. Then jump on the gold bar you threw while having slim’s ability on you in 3d or 2d and press an and b at the same time to open up you characters, pixels, and items. Change your pixel to any pixel you want and depending if you did this 3d or 2d hold any direction of the wall you want to clip in if done in 3d and in 2d hold either or left or right depending on which wall and you’ll clip through any wall ever
This is useful for when you reach that block puzzle in 5-1. Using slim’s ability and a gold bar against the wall and pressing a and b at the same time and change your pixel while holding the direction of the wall you want to clip in can skip the puzzle entirely. People used this trick in speedrunning
On my recent SPM playthrough, I decided to manually grind all 1 million rubies [With Hampter wheel] and it was fun because I just played other games while grinding. 10/10 Go full hampter
#fleepsweep!!!! 🔄🔄🔄🔄 never knew the detail about the fists until the challenge video it was in but that's such good attention to detail by the dev team
A mew under the truck thing that I have no idea if true but could check but don't feel like is supposedly in post game you can find an underwhere npc thats supposedly dimentio.

Scandalous, right ?!

Second is related to the ending of the video: The game actually has another failsafe for every Pixl besides Thudley and Cudge. (:
There are obviously a lot more obscure mechanics I could mention about this game (Bonus one: In Flopside there is an Artist NPC, if you interact with him while playing Peach he will change her hair) but those are the things I mainly wanted to mention here. (:
The failsafe isn't present for Fleep either, which makes sense since, just like Thudley and Cudge, it's impossible to progress without him
Super Paper Mario has rpg elements in a platformer package, and it's something so unique I almost wish it was expanded upon
For a game with such shallow platforming, There really is a lot of obscure gameplay stuff I didn't even know about myself. This is cool.
0:34 weirdest mechanics in the best paper mario game*
I could have sworn that if you backwards slide on the hampter wheel you could get rubies just a bit faster. Like, it takes a bit of trial and error but if I remember correctly you gotta run right, change directions, jump left, then slide while facing left to preserve momentum. I remember the light for earning rubies going faster as a kid on my console.
The Space Food Community has taken note of this treachery.
You should try a minimum XP run where you avoid as much experience as you possibly can
22:58 I was that kid to an extent.
0:04 And it's been awesome! I love this game and it's great getting to see so much more about it 😄
I hope there's a PM64 arc someday too XD
Love the Super Paper Mario videos, thought the game was phonomenal as a kid and now I het hyperfixated on it every 6 months lol
I'm so happy for all this Super Paper Mario content
And you did 3 Hampters lol
Obscure Mechanics List:
Did you know that using Fleep instantly sends you into 2d from 3D?
(Tested on Official Hardware, crashed all three times.)
In space, Carrey works completely different, instead moving you in a 2d space. In 2D you can move freely, but in 3D you can only go forwards, backwards, left and right. You are unable to change height
Bowser cannot climb ladders.
Funny Mistakes:
Using slim in 3D makes you turn 2d.
"fleeping on their shit" brand new phrase
swuigs only let you bounce on a few shots and atop firing until you hit the ground, but while you're on carrie you're considered grounded even in the air
I’m pretty sure the emergency ration and space food lists their special attribute in their description. Just open it up in the item inventory, hover over the item, and hit down on the d-pad and it’ll show a second page of the description
So this isn't really obscure, but you can use Barry right before you land on an enemy to deal extra damage, so that is something :)
I’m not sure how obscure it is but Thoreau can pick up enemies again mid throw and cause a dizzy animation when caught. Even works on some bosses.
Apparently if you get slim in 2-3 and go into the hampter wheel room you won’t need the key code
1:45 whoever found this (if it wasn’t you) well done i don’t think anyone would randomly notice that
Bowser can’t climb ladders
Hi Grimble!
I'm so happy you enjoy SPM!
Reaching level 99 in 25 minutes.
I'm not sure but I think groundpounding the floor revealing Francis might have been used in future games like 3D world where groundpounding also doing the same with invisible blocks and enemies
most of this stuff is mentioned in the strategy guide
Mint vid Bongle!
may this arc never end
I like how you make a game that is way too easy for experienced platform gamers into an actual challenge, and thus make the most of it's mechanics. Dottie and Peach are still broken though. I wonder how hard it would be to beat the pits of 100 trials at level 1 without either of them, or if it's even possible to do it without capture cards.
For Fracktail if you stay far left as Mario and just walk right at the last second you don’t even need to jump and can just fall onto his head again
Also if you wanted a fact for Slim you can use Gold Bars and Slim to clip through walls
I don’t know if you’ve done this yet but can you make it so every single door you enter can send you anywhere? That would be cool
10:29 THIS is the kind of old-school gaming I remember!
10:45 I made him shout "Son Goku" at the top of his lungs lmaooooo
I'm actually that one kid, I knew about the 18000 rupee cap before because I taped my Wii remote before going off to do something else for a while.
So many interesting facts.
The top part of the cage is intangible as long as you move diagonally, for an example you can check out an any% speedrun.
these are the Bringle vids that I want
10:58 Beep-O swears a couple of times in Mario X Rabbids. Like in the section where you assemble the Phantom of the Bwahpera. Though it's censored lol
I'd recommend watching Fatguy's Super Paper Mario let's play; it has a lot of cool stuff
Smart idea copy and paste Luigi‘s little model and paste it in the boss battle and color it black 1:51
The "shell trick" feels so weird to me lol
I remember trying it in the game but instead of it giving you negative points it just broke the shell.
Also IIRC, the korean release has an exclusive unused room [correct me if I’m wrong]
#fleepsweep!!!! 🔄🔄🔄🔄 never knew the detail about the fists until the challenge video it was in but that's such good attention to detail by the dev team
6:30
I assume it functions like a flashbang to them aurally
ummm banger alert ‼️⁉️
A mew under the truck thing that I have no idea if true but could check but don't feel like is supposedly in post game you can find an underwhere npc thats supposedly dimentio.
Erm, you didn’t mention that the Eeligon is the GOAT. What the freak
We need hampter mode 3
SPM doing the Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric Knuckles pause glitch before it was... cool?
Guess who as a kid played the rubee jumping minigame to collect 1m legal rubees... this guy
need a paper Mario 64 arc
Myth correct because Luigi is actually Mr. L because you know 0:59
6:05 Woah wait, when did you become that high level? XD
but to be fair the ruby thing is good made to not miss the pixle
I thought stealing Mr.L item was intentional lol
