I've seen some videos about Reforge and usually they will use a clip or multiple clips of some of the things he says for critical reasons or to point out hypocrisy or double standards etc. It's not like a direct reupload of his actual episode, not even close, as a matter of fact he's usually one of a few people being talked about in some of these videos. The context of the original Reforge video and the ones made by others criticizing him cannot act as substitutes for his work or be mistaken as his work or even contextually the same. I'll go out on a limb and say that it's just an emotional reaction as this type of behavior usually is. I ask myself a simple question, would he have a problem if the people he's accusing of "stealing" his work were to be praising and agreeing with him in the videos they're making?

Reaction content can be a very difficult beast to tame. i think too many in that community got lazy and because they've skirted under the radar of being sued , the next guy went the "well if they can do it that way, so can i, route". And most of the time they get away with it so it continues on.
its because the question of it being a market replacement can often answered with: technically yes, but very probable that its actually not. U would have never even heard of the movie, article or whatnot if ur favourite reaction youtuber hadnt had this in their content, and even more unlikely that u would actually buy that thing, since theres so much content out there for free anyway. There are so many gamers out there actually advertising the game by playing it in public, which can be compared to any "reaction content" since its nothing else than publicizing copyrighted material.... u can see this by Nintendo actually copyright striking youtuber for displaying their games on their channels, a bunch of those every 5 years or so. Which is a disgusting practice. Copyright in itself is a dehumanizing practice of claiming property to something that can be endlessly reproduced to capitalize on the gains and take away volume in common space of ideas. The character of a game is to play the game, and watching the game almost never fulfills that same use, and as you said, it’s usually just free publicity. Many people buy games after watching them. But for an article, there is little reason to read/buy the original article if you show off 100% of it. Maybe you get some publicity and new viewers, but that’s very minimal

Very informative video! Thank you for the correction on the true application of fair use here. I would add, as a friendly comment, that these type of videos are not the majority of reforge's content. I've watched him over the years and what he usually does are live streams where he writes a 15-20 minute opening monologue on a topic and then discusses/debates said topic with viewers for 2-3 hours. These topics can vary drastically and he does try to put the time in to learn a good bit about whatever he covers for the stream. So while id totally agree reaction content is low effort (we all know it is BUT people like it, so people make it), id say he does do a pretty good job during the live streams. His mistake here with the legal misunderstandings of fair use are unfortunate and again it is good you informed him of said misunderstanding, but id not say it is an indicator of him as a creator as a whole. Anywho, great video still. Definitely glad I found the channel. Like your style and thorough approach. Will definitely check out more of your work. :)

The context of the original Reforge video and the ones made by others criticizing him cannot act as substitutes for his work or be mistaken as his work or even contextually the same.
I'll go out on a limb and say that it's just an emotional reaction as this type of behavior usually is. I ask myself a simple question, would he have a problem if the people he's accusing of "stealing" his work were to be praising and agreeing with him in the videos they're making?

Reaction content can be a very difficult beast to tame. i think too many in that community got lazy and because they've skirted under the radar of being sued , the next guy went the "well if they can do it that way, so can i, route".
And most of the time they get away with it so it continues on.
its because the question of it being a market replacement can often answered with: technically yes, but very probable that its actually not. U would have never even heard of the movie, article or whatnot if ur favourite reaction youtuber hadnt had this in their content, and even more unlikely that u would actually buy that thing, since theres so much content out there for free anyway. There are so many gamers out there actually advertising the game by playing it in public, which can be compared to any "reaction content" since its nothing else than publicizing copyrighted material.... u can see this by Nintendo actually copyright striking youtuber for displaying their games on their channels, a bunch of those every 5 years or so.
Which is a disgusting practice. Copyright in itself is a dehumanizing practice of claiming property to something that can be endlessly reproduced to capitalize on the gains and take away volume in common space of ideas. Worst thing is, that often not the creators themselves, but the corporate parasites they contracted with are winning the most.

One of the core characteristics of a game is that it requires human interaction to work. Most games have a minimal level of skill needed to play, whereas a song, movie, or news article do not. Additionally, every person will play most games uniquely, since most games are not 100% linear.
This is why gameplay is seen as an acceptable thing to most publishers. The character of a game is to play the game, and watching the game almost never fulfills that same use, and as you said, it’s usually just free publicity. Many people buy games after watching them. But for an article, there is little reason to read/buy the original article if you show off 100% of it. Maybe you get some publicity and new viewers, but that’s very minimal
@@Tohru_Gaming movies are watched, articles are read.. this is human interaction, too. U need eyes, pattern recognition, a brain, reading skill and so on to watch and read. Its just that u limit ur definition of "skill". Basically every human being is normally able to play those games. There is no cognitive barrier that prevents half of humanity being able to play or somesuch.
And ur perception of sound, what ur brain does with pictures or any perception at all is already unique. That doesnt distract from the fact that the content of the game is copyrighted content and to distribute it while making money of it IS comparable to reaction videos of people watching movie, commenting on it, going through emotions and so on.
What u presented was a line of arguments that would make playing a game how its supposed to be played by the devs somehow magically fair use in general. But fair use is a defense in court when the use of copyrighted material is judged in detail. And its not generally the case that playing games while recording it is always fair use, while reading an article or watching a movie isnt. Thats a false generalization. And the distinction u make between movies and games isnt as large as u frame it to be.

Thr problem with Reforge Gaming is that, he looks to appeal certain audience where basically he got himself into a box he doesn't know how to escape... This is because to appeal to that audience and keep it, he has to think in a certain way that is very restrictive and once in that loop, one can forget how to make original content so when he feels threatened... Meaning that someone makes a valid critique to him, because he forgot how to have critical thinking, the only way he can respond is like any of them would. Legal action threats, because he no longer is able to come with an argument and fall into making lazy content that is bordeline just reading ab article, disagree with it and make some opinions that are honestly to laugh at something for which channels like Fritanga and others mock him so much, because is easy for them with thr argument level he has, which is almost none existent and one would think that he could come with a reply but instead is going for the "imma strike you".

Ever since then, when my membership expires, suddenly, I am mysteriously gifted a membership by someone I've never heard of, met, or interacted with in any way. You know the absolute irony of a games critiquer claiming 'paywalled content' is not fair use, just what does he think games are for the most part? They're genuinely paid content, paywalled if you were so inclined.
I mean, if commentary isn't fair use on something, than neither is reviews/criticism... and the spicy irony of that would be that he thus reviews content he himself considers illegal, which makes him either stupid or immoral to the core.
I agree, reaction channels that do nothing other than watch a video and make faces at a camera are stupid and a blight on the industry. But some channels like GoodLuckAmerica are technically reaction channels, but they are transformative in that they add their expertise - in GLA's case, he is an ex officer who watches police videos and breaks them down tactics and all.
Only reaction videos I tolerate are ones where the content being reacted to gets broken down and discussed. That's actually interesting. Watching dudes just go "huh huh cool" every 20 seconds is a complete waste of time, why would anyone even watch that?

The problem with fair use, and to some extent, all laws in existence is that you needs actual court ruling.

The bigest mistake people make when they hear about these 4 factors to consider, they think that, if any one of them is happening, then it is al blocked, rather than considering anything. I would add, as a friendly comment, that these type of videos are not the majority of reforge's content. I've watched him over the years and what he usually does are live streams where he writes a 15-20 minute opening monologue on a topic and then discusses/debates said topic with viewers for 2-3 hours. These topics can vary drastically and he does try to put the time in to learn a good bit about whatever he covers for the stream.
So while id totally agree reaction content is low effort (we all know it is BUT people like it, so people make it), id say he does do a pretty good job during the live streams.
His mistake here with the legal misunderstandings of fair use are unfortunate and again it is good you informed him of said misunderstanding, but id not say it is an indicator of him as a creator as a whole.
