  • This math and science video tutorial shows you how to identify the dependent and independent variables so you which data to plot on the x axis and on the y-axis. It contains plenty of examples and practice problems such as word problems. It shows you if the dependent variable and independent variable is x or y and it discusses the relationship of certain graphs such as linear curves, inverse relationships, and quadratic or parabolic functions. Examples include Newton's second law of motion between force, mass, and acceleration, boyle's law of pressure and volume in chemistry, and distance vs time under constant acceleration in physics. It also explains the difference between the control group and the experimental group. The slope of the line for the force mass example is acceleration.

Great video! I recall learning about the dependent and independent variables in high school, but that was 30 years ago. This was an excellent refresher - straight-forward and easy to understand. Thanks for your contribution.

    Hello,
Thank you for the great video!
I do have a question about the table. Is it safe to assume that the left side column of the table is associated with the x-axis and the right side column associated with the y axis? I have some data tables with out any statements or instructions on how to graph.
    Kind regards.

Hi Emir Bell, Always keep in Mind, Independent variables - Cause and Dependent Variables - Effect. Here, Different masses are Mentioned as Causes and Force is the Effect. You know, There is no Effect without Cause. X Axis is the Cause (Mass) and Y axis is the Effect (Force). You Can Measure the Force (Effect) only by Changing or Varying the Mass Value (Cause)...Even Without Statement you can Understand the Table by Verifying the Cause and Effect Relationship. I hope U will get this point... Thank You...

x-axis goes left to right (horizontal). The y-axis goes up and down (vertical).

I feel like this is a silly question, but I'm doing math with all new variables, follows logarithmic trends. The deviations come from linear trends. I'm getting confused on what "proportional relationship" means. In this example, is acceleration also proportional to your Y-axis??? Say you have 3-4 variables, where do you draw the line of being related
