But agree, in that state of disassembly and knowing their reputation, why would you not take the engine apart? Could make the difference between a real joy or an absolute pig!
I’m glad others are interested in the build, wasn’t sure if it was just going to be something I enjoyed 😅 Agree on the engine, the more I think about it the more I need to know what’s going on in there.. it was supposedly built by PJME but no paper work to back this up 😫

Forks are fine, left fork has a spring and the right side doesn’t. As one does damping the other does the rebound. You also have to tap the paddock stand bobbin wholes yourself as they don’t come pre threaded. Most people just put nut and washer on the inside. The arrow exhaust will rust as the costing burns off really quickly.
Interesting, the right fork leg has zero resistance though? I would have thought if ones compression and the other rebound it would still have had some fluid in it? Yea I know the expansion chambers don’t stay that pretty for long.. sadly 😅
@@stoneautomotiveit’s been that long since I’ve worked on an RS125 but I think the right fork (calliper side) has a damper in it and it should have oil. It should compress pretty easy and return just short of full travel if that makes sense. The left has the spring and has oil too. When we raced them, it use to make getting the front wheel in and out a pain with a normal front paddock stand, as the legs never lined up.
Thanks 😎👍 I think Griff is far to busy to accept calls from me on every Aprilia project I begin, I’ll save his number for the real emergency stuff haha
It’s going to be a nice build, well done, 👍👏👏🏍️👏👏👍 but I would definitely strip the engine down for peace of mind, better safe than sorry, as I’m sure you don’t want Sod’s Law to come into play, keep up the great content. 👍🏍️👍
Great project. 👍 I would at least be removing the top end and checking crank play and bearings. Check the ring gap on the piston. Making sure it's fitted the right way round. 😉
Only one fork has a spring (not that uncommon) To support the frame, there are holes near the swingign arm spindle. Put a bar through there (I bought a 1/2" drive 24" extension bar for this), and just support each end on an axle stand. Stainless socket head bolts on the disk are a bit worrying. Shame the bracket has been cut off the front of the frame. The pneumatic power valve was the old system. RAVE 1 was the early / mid 1980s pneumatic power valve setup without an adjuable preload. RAVE 2 had adjustment (can change the prload on the spring to mess with where it opens) replaced it in the mid to late 1980s, and then for 1989 Aprilia switched to the RAVE E electronically controlled system. My experience with them over the years is that the RAVE E is less prone to sticking. Advantage of the pneumatic system is that it is cheap and means the bike can be run without a charging system (especially useful on the 123 engined bikes where the ignition system didn't require a battery, etc), and no cable required (some of the power valve blades wear badly where the cable attaches - not helped when people put them in upside down!). Italkit do 2 aftermarket pneumatic valves, one (the one you have) being equivalent to RAVE 1, the other being equivalent to RAVE 2. I bought my RS125 new in 1993. One of the first batch in the country. I still own it. Currently just waiting for me to bleed the rear brake through before I MOT it.
Think you’ve had a bargain there, definitely, worth a look inside the engine for peace of mind….im sure I remember hearing something about these having plastic oil pump gears and issues with those but this was 20 years ago now I’m sure there’s a well know fix theses days
My pal wanted a 400cc just passed his test, guy in the bike shop said get the apprillia 125, take the restricter out the exhaust & it will almost keep up with 400s
I would say the RS250 is a closer road match to the 400cc Japanese sports bikes personally. The RS125 are certainly little rockets but you need to be sub 60kg in ride weight for them to be effective against a torque loaded 400cc 4 stroke.. me being 93kg does no favours for the rs125’s power to weight ratio 😅
