    I am a professional caricaturist and largely work from photos. The “enhance” phenomena Matt describes has, in my opinion, completely addled the general public’s collective understanding of how imagery works. I cannot tell you how many pictures I have been sent where the subject was obscured, too far away from camera or at too low a resolution to be visible; but it seems people believe that a piece of software something like the interface seen in Minority Report or the Iron Man movies actually exists, and items can be plucked out from the tiniest few kilobytes of jpeg, rotated in mid air and examined in minute detail. Yes: a pet peeve, a bugbear, a constant struggle.

      You should just take the opportunity to experiment or make up your own funny little characters when someone hands you stuff like that

    • @maslav_
      @maslav_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kind of an interesting point to consider is that "enhancing" images is starting to be a thing due to the advancements in neural network image processing. Those algorithms can't recreate the exact features of the original image, but since they learn how a tree looks or how a human face is constructed, they can generate fake data that fills out a low quality image and makes it look sharper and higher fidelity.

    My pet peeve in film is when you watch a scene, let's say a bank heist, and then later in the movie, some characters are watching the "security camera footage" and it's just the same shots we (as an audience) all saw before, but grainier or in black and white and on a smaller screen. So dumb. I would even mildly appreciate it if the film makers used unused footage, but they don't!
    Thanks for the show fellas.

    Image enhancement only works with random keystrokes.
    They didn't need capes or ruffled shirts because they already had ridiculous high collars.

    • @steviea427
      @steviea427 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. Capes and ruffled shirts would not be practical in space, no matter how cool they are. Everybody knows that. High leather collars are the way to go. Also, I have been saying "enhance image" and hitting random keystrokes for a while now and nothing ever happens. Do I need to upgrade from Windows XP?

    Note: among movies that duplicated Bava's 'Planet of the Vampires' e.g. 1979's 'Alien' and the subsequent 'Prometheus' - I'm always spotting others that stole elements from 'POTV'. Example: the very last scene in 1980's 'Saturn 3' where the ship is headed towards Earth - the director duplicated the last 'POTV' scene and the music is also verbatim, less 'S3' adding some horns to the ominous sounding music. Only takes a moment to TH-cam it to look and listen. It is exact.

    I thought the Ewoks were interesting and essential from the point of the view of the story; they were "noble savages", totally lacking in guile and "the dark side", and as such, escaped the Emperor's clairvoyance. The visions of victory the Emperor had were the version of events where the Ewoks played no role.

    I was a kid when Phantom Menace came out and I love it to this day. The cast is great, I think they all created very distinct characters. Like, I still cannot comprehend Qui Gon is Liam Neeson. And I really enjoyed the podracing, the Gungan City, and the most badass lightsaber fight ever made. And that soundtrack, amazing. How could John Williams raise the bar and create another standalone trilogy of iconic soundtracks, i do not know.
    I don’t know why people don’t like the prequels, really. I think it may be a kid thing, like you guys and the Ewoks. People who have waited for “the new Star Wars” a long time and got something completely new were disappointed because they created a vision of what it would be in their heads and were incorrect. Just look at the sequels. Kids love it, adults keep complaining about it (I loved the visuals, but the story is all over the place)

    My pet peeve is the scene in every action movie where someone (usually the bad guy) flicks a Zippo lighter aflame and instead of lighting a cigarette or a piece of paper or anything else and tossing it into the pool of gas or pile of flammable material, they toss the Zippo itself, thus destroying a perfectly good lighter. I call it “Zippocide”. It really bugs the @$#&* out of me. What if you need a lighter later on? You’re screwed!

    I think in many cases by the looks of it, the way they pulled off the planet surface shots looks pretty good! I think if they toned down some of the campier, more "brightly lit" elements of the set / wardrobe this would look pretty ahead of it's time. Some of the underlit more "harshly shadowed" shots looked fairly contemporary. Is this like a prototype LIFEFORCE!?? :D

    Haha that's funny-- The Ewok argument is the exact same thing I say about them. I always remind my friends who gripe about the Ewoks being 'too cute' or 'fluff filler' -- "You know they are going to murderize everyone when they're first introduced, right?" I never understood the anti-Ewok rhetoric. Somehow people see cute and forget they are like a carnivorous warrior race, like it somehow negates that. And I don't mind the Yub Nub song too much because its still John Williams and it fits the score transition quite well. And yeah I also cant stand the prequels, (edit: Red Letter Media has a good breakdown on why they're so bad) I think they are far worse than the sequels (even though they weren't great either) and anyone saying Rose was the next Jar Jar needs to get their head examined, lol.

    "Mmmm ACTUALLY you CAN enhance digital pictures right now, forget sci-fi future times. Look at the way underwater cameras can now 'remove' the water from pictures. We took an out of focus Hubble and enhanced that biatchass.
    ENHANCE!

    Toby. I bet everything bad that happens is his fault.

    Re: Enhance the Image
    You are correct that zooming in makes things bigger, not clearer. Zooming in on something will not help. However, that will soon not be the case.
    As cameras and televisions improve, we’ve reached the level that input/output can exceed the capacity of the human eye. Cameras can now see better than our eyes can. This leads people to ask, “what the point is of all the extra details if we can’t see them?” This is it; Enhance the image. If the camera sees equal to our eyes the image will become bigger but not clearer. But if the camera sees better than our eyes, enhancing the image will bring up smaller sections that now (downgraded in quality by the zoom) are equal to human eye equivalent. Since the “better” quality details can’t be seen by us there is no perceived drop in image quality. To a digital eye, that section would suffer the same effect we have of calling the zoomed section “blurry” as it is only in 8k rather than 80k, for example. Since we couldn’t see the drop in quality, it’s imperceptible to us, it looks like a good sci-fi zoom with apparent blurry-ness. (Technically it is blurry relative to itself but we don’t know.) This is why we continue pushing cameras and TVs past what our eyes can naturally see, for the “Enhance the Image” sci-fi future we see in movies. We can’t “Enhance the Image” now, but in the future we will. Hopefully that made sense.

      What you're talking about is scaling, not "enhancement".
