    I have a really good idea. At the end of every Welcome to the Basement episode for 2019, Matt and Craig should figure out exactly how a Nick Fury after-credits scene would play out for the movie they just watched.All you need is Matt to want to and it will probably happen. Dot it Matt, you know you want to

    I think we, as Basement Dwellers, ought to appreciate that Craig had an entire separate intro spiel ready if Matt had picked Mamma Mia. That's the kind of dedication that makes for a quality program, and for a meaningful birthday gift.

      I don't remember all of what I was going to say, but I do remember that I was going to mention that Mamma Mia was, like My Big Fat Greek Wedding before it, was co-produced by Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson. The two movies combined made a billion dollars worldwide. Not that box office is the most important thing, but: a billion dollars.

    Now you need to watch the 1954 remake starring Judy Garland and James Mason-it’s absolutely heartbreaking and I think one of Garland’s best performances.

  • @NinjaDimes
    @NinjaDimes 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great episode as always! You got me at the start with the Nick Fury idea, haha. I want this to be a thing.
    As for the last comment... As someone who was into K-Pop, just... no. I mean, it's nice poppy music, and it's super catchy and I like it-- but the 'stories' the music videos tell are mostly vacuous, cookie cutter and manufactured. There's no depth or feeling to most of it-- Kpop is kinda like a machine run by rich dudes in suits, and the stars themselves rarely get input, money or real recognition from their companies. I feel like what happened to Shinee's Jong Hyun is an example of the dark side of Kpop. Companies manufacture most of the bands, then use a basic formula to just churn out song after song and play on the feelings of teens. There are exceptions to this, but most of the boy bands aren't it. There's nothing really special about EXO's "Universe" MV, for example, or BTS's "DNA" either, they are pretty standard cringey boy band videos. Also, idk but Matt doesn't strike me as the type who would get wowed by Kpop boy bands in any capacity. That said, there are some great catchy pop songs in Kpop, and if you want some bubblegum pop, it's a good place to get it.

  • @Chastain86

    A thought came to me as you two were discussing the work of Noah Baumbach during this episode -- and that's the concept of being unable to enjoy a movie on its own merits... but instead of what you wish a film WAS, or had the potential to BE.
    A great example of this was "There Will Be Blood," which I immensely disliked not for what it was, but for its downright refusal to be something more approachable. Ultimately, I realized I was judging the film for not living up to my own expectations. Once I realized that it would not conform to what I wanted, I was able to instead enjoy it for what it actually is.
    Do you guys ever have situations like this, where you feel as if you need to take a step back and reassess a film because you suspect you judged it for not being the film you wanted it to be?

  • @Jade12291
    @Jade12291 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just... wanted to take a moment to leave a public service announcement about the 2018 Star Is Born "remake". So I was originally introduced to a star is born because of this show. So I watched the original and then I waited for the new one. I have to say... I've seen a lot of movies in my time. I don't care about the genre or what it may be about. I grew up watching movies with my father and we would just go and see anything. Then when redbox became a thing we'd rent whatever from it. So it certainly wasn't that I didn't care for the genre or the idea of "musical" movies. I especially love music themed movies and so was excited to see what they did with the movie this time around. You know... it being the second remake of this movie after the original and the 70's version with Barbara Streisand. Movies about music and small time people making it inspires me. This...is not that.
    This... Is the first movie I've ever walked out of and I've seen a loooot of average and shitty movies. The beginning not so bad you know the music's pretty good till gaga makes it. Didn't even know her name till it was plastered on the billboards. At some point it set in that this movie kept telling gaga or Ally to not lose her voice. You know what's ironic about that? This movie didn't have one. I had no idea what it was trying to get through. Several parts where just cringy or annoying I felt like I was the drunk one watching some weird Spanish soap opera only one where I care less about the characters. You don't care about these people less than an hour through. It feels forced and the script is half ass strung together. Characters are put in out of nowhere like they were supposed to be a bigger part of the movie and were cut. I didn't care. Sitting through this nearly 3 hour movie was like having a dementor spit down my throat and suck out my soul (or what's left of it).
    This is the most painfully average movie I've seen in a long time. They had something that could've been interesting and deep with decent imagery no. It had all these scene's, but didn't know what to do with it. I'd rather watch the new predator again. That was bad, yes, but at least it was stupid and a little funny because it was so horrid.
    There were several points in the movie where there is talk of suicide and some imagery, most definitely hinting to the end I was to damn bored to sit and wait through, and most definitely hinting at the original and vice versa as seemed to be done a few times. To be quiet frank I can relate this movie more to low budget Horror movie. One where I am rooting for the killer and not the group of people trying to survive. About an hour in I was waiting for the lead to kill himself already and end my pain. Don't waste your money on this. Don't even torrent it. Save the space on your computer. If you want to watch this movie you'd be better off just listening to the soundtrack and putting two and two together. At least that is pretty good for what it is well, save for some of the last songs. I regret spending the 8 bucks I used to see this movie. The only good part about this movie were the Queens.

    It was my turn to have a strange dream about you guys. You created a new youtube show with twin brothers named Brian and Marc, who looked suspiciously like Casem from Beer and Board games. It was a cooking show called "Cooking With Matt, Craig, Brian, and the Other Guy", the joke being that for some reason you all refused to address Marc by his name and barely acknowledged his existence, even though he did most of the cooking. For your first episode you made sirloin burgers with special toppings- and I do mean special, for example, one was topped with white truffles (which cost several thousand dollars per pound in real life). Unfortunately, this show premiere brought the wrath of the internet down on your heads, because at the end of the episode you cut one of the burgers open to better reveal its doneness to the camera, and showed that these burgers that had been made with ridiculously expensive ingredients had been so overcooked they looked like grey, flavourless briquettes.

    I actually kinda liked Greenburg (Gerwig and Baumback), but though LadyBird was just ok (overrated). Nothing special, but a decent movie. Wouldn't watch it again.

    Also agreed - Greta Gerwig is already better than her boi.
