0:34 Mike Judge also used Geto Boys "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta" in Office Space, and hired former Geto Boy, Scarface, for the pimp role in Idiocracy.
That “Wurdolak” vignette, I’m pretty sure, is not ripped off of Poe, but is instead an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s “The House of Vurdolak”, a classic vampire short story.
Whoa! Does Craig now like vampires? This is quite the character arc he’s gone through from the early seasons. Once he said vampires simply weren’t scary, but now he gets it. As a vampire fan (and a Craig fan) I am so happy for him. Ha ha.
23:07: Seen It: "Adaptation", i think fits into a similar vein, about 2 disparate artists trajectory in life. (this is one of my favorite Nicolas Cage films, w/ him playing both twin brothers)
Idk why but I haven't watched any of you guys' videos in a good long while, and it's treat to revisit the show with Black Sabbath. I saw this a couple years ago and was blown away by The Wurdalak! Glad you guys enjoyed it too.
One thing that this film did right: The original Italian title. So many of the major shots of the movie weren't about the gore, or the tension, but the facial expressions of the characters.
Donna Del Lago (1965) aka. The Possessed by Luigi Bazzoni was really my first experience with Italian moviemaking. It is a mystery thriller and thus one of the early examples of the genre "Giallo", which Bava, director of Black Sabbath, also contributed to. It actually awoke my love for the genre. I love this movie, its use of shadows and dream-sequences. It feels Noir due to the mystery and the somewhat naive/romantic main character, yet it takes place mainly in a hotel and with only really a handful of characters.. I would recommend anyone, even those without a fascination for the genre, to go and watch it.
Hey Craig, if you need someone to teach you how to play Flinch, I'm your huckleberry. It was a Central Wisconsin favorite growing up. (I mean, its no Sheepshead...but...)
Thanks for doing this! I have been a big fan of Italian cinema since my teens. You guys hit all the nails, on all of the heads. ✊😀 **I am sure you have seen Suspiria, but how about the rest of the Three Mothers trilogy?
WOW!!! One of my favourite movie on Welcome to the Basement! PS co-writer Alberto Bevilacqua was a very "intellectual writer with big, fancy glasses" kind of tipe and was mostly ashamed of his work with Mario Bava. Only years leter, after the ridiscovery of Bava, he came back around and started giving interview about the movies he co-wrote.
Have Matt and Craig ever done a True Crime type scene-it, or a scene-it featuring movies based on real life crimes? I'd be so curious on their thoughts on balancing public interest in crime with the ethics of exploiting tragedy and revering violent offenders. My roommate was watching The Haunting of Sharon Tate and I found it so crass and exploitative as to be unwatchable, but I would be lying if I said I hadn't enjoyed media about Jack the Ripper, etc. Is time the only factor that makes true crime 'acceptable'?
My partner and I do a Halloween marathon each year. Last year's highlights were The Witch and A Quiet Place and this year we've particularly enjoyed Get Out, Train To Busan, The Thing (Carpenter) and the Suspiria remake. This weekend's climactic double feature will be The Brood followed by Hereditary! Hereditary has been widely lauded as a modern classic and I've avoided any plot points or trailers, so here's hoping it cuts the mustard! Anyone else have similar plans? If so, what will you watch? I was never a big horror fan but my partner convinced me and I've been surprised by the variety and depth of the genre 👻👹🤡🎃
Hey I accidentally disliked it first because I clicked in the general vicinity of the thumb buttons while I held my phone with one hand. I rectified the situation.
Two strong agreements. I was aware of Black Sabbath but hadn't watched it for similar reasons. Now, I want to. Also, I hated My Dinner with Andre for the same reason: Andre. Not only do I not like him or anything he says but he monologues for 75% of the movie. You have to wait until the last quarter to really hear anything from Wallace, who is delightful, but it's too little too late.
I don’t understand the Gogol reference. It troubles me because he is my favorite author. Did you mention him because the woman calls him an idiot? As in the Idiot by Dostoevsky? But that doesn’t make any sense. Can anyone help me with that reference, it’s really bugging me.
Hey Craig... CRAIG!!! You can find some directions to your new card game on it's wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flinch_(card_game)#:~:text=To%20start%20the%20game%2C%20the,card%2C%20and%20repeats%20the%20process.
Matt may have birthed Stu, but Craig brought us Kreschnev. Two great gifts!
We need Stu to meet Kreschnev
You've forgotten about Fran Newhaus, one of the most important new additions to the Basement!
The birth of a new character, Khreznev.
I still wait for Ernesto at the end of every video. For some reason I was worried you’d change it after he passed away. But his spirit lives on!❤️
Such a fun episode. "Watch out it's Kurt Vonnegut!"
“Italian napkins are very powerful; have you seen Othello?” 😂
Hot Prediction / Take: Khreznev is the new Stu and I am **loving it**
Dude, same here, fingers crossed, but this is 2020: not happenin'.
0:34 Mike Judge also used Geto Boys "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta" in Office Space, and hired former Geto Boy, Scarface, for the pimp role in Idiocracy.
We demand a team-up of Stu and Khreznev...make it happen!
That “Wurdolak” vignette, I’m pretty sure, is not ripped off of Poe, but is instead an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s “The House of Vurdolak”, a classic vampire short story.
He was saying the third one, not the second one, was a rip off of Poe as it is very close to his famous story The Telltale Heart.
@@legofan370 Oh, I missed that. Ty for the correction. Nevertheless, Tolstoy deserved a mention, ha ha.
Whoa! Does Craig now like vampires? This is quite the character arc he’s gone through from the early seasons. Once he said vampires simply weren’t scary, but now he gets it. As a vampire fan (and a Craig fan) I am so happy for him. Ha ha.
10:15 Hah! Frontier Psychiatrist popped straight into my head, too!
14:30 when that doll is in the shadows, the uncanny valley is pretty effective
23:07: Seen It: "Adaptation", i think fits into a similar vein, about 2 disparate artists trajectory in life. (this is one of my favorite Nicolas Cage films, w/ him playing both twin brothers)

Love this movie and this episode! Was just watching Mario Bava’s “Kill, Baby... Kill!” and wondered when you guys would watch some Italian horror.
I really enjoy when you guys watch anthology movies like these
"Sexy Transom Music" will be the title of my memoir.
the Krezhnev bit was hilarious! I was laughing throughout!
"Khreznev" has me rolling on the floor laughing:)
Hey Craig, if you need someone to teach you how to play Flinch, I'm your huckleberry. It was a Central Wisconsin favorite growing up. (I mean, its no Sheepshead...but...)
Terrific show! I would like to see a sequel to 'My Dinner with Andre' with Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn. 'My Dessert with Andre'
Thanks for doing this! I have been a big fan of Italian cinema since my teens. You guys hit all the nails, on all of the heads. ✊😀
**I am sure you have seen Suspiria, but how about the rest of the Three Mothers trilogy?
There's a Suspiria episode, though I can't recall if they mention the other two movies.
10:19 I appreciate the Avalanches reference
Loved the Avalanches joke...
The name Wurdalak is going to stick in my head all of today, I can feel it in my bones, taking root.
Hilarious episode, bravo!
This movie really creeped me out as a kid, particularly the “I Wurdalak” and “La Goccia d’Acqua”(the Drop of Water)segments.
In Soviet Russia, phone calls YOU
Respect Craig's knowledge of the Frontier Psychologist.
Happy birthday, Jackie!
Seen it: return of the living dead (1985) one of the best zombie movies out there...ONE of them!
what's the song reference at 9:12? it's been stuck in my head for some time now.
Call Ozzy! Tell him he has to record a song called: "Welcome to the Basement!"
We had that Flinch game when I was a kid. :)
I liked the part where your edit made it look like the lady heard you singing "Legs" and she really wanted you to stop.

Love the Ramones reference! Anyone else get that?
Nice apartment Craig, except for that whacky neighbor Cosmo Kreshnev who is always sliding through your door.
Office Space, agreed.
Office space set me on my career path. I watched it when I was 10 and since then I would be damned if I worked in a office.
Vonnegut jokes? I love this episode.

Hank Hill is in your impression repertoire, Matt? Why aren't you using it more?
Stu Kreschnev and Fran Newhouse need to start a travelling comedy show together.
Hey I accidentally disliked it first because I clicked in the general vicinity of the thumb buttons while I held my phone with one hand. I rectified the situation.
i hope one of you goes as Kreshnev for halloween
What is Craig's everyday job?:)

I always like when you expect trash but it's pretty good

Thick Italian women... my weakness.

As a middle aged white guy who likes rap... I didn't realize it was a joke. Am I a joke to you son?
You can find the rules to Flinch on its Wiki page...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flinch_(card_game)
Frou Blucha, LOLOLOLOLOL
This movie was kinda good
Symbiopsychotaxiplasm?
Joey Ramone will not forgive you for that remark!
Khreznev is just Russian Stu
Damn it feels good to be a gangster
Fuckin' A
Blucher!
I prefer the remote episodes to the masked ones.
Black Sabbath are from Birmingham not Sheffield
dude are you stuffin' that face mask? it look like you put a sock to... umm... add some girth to that nose. tell me it isn't so...
You could have chosen a better Black Sabbath album for the background
Maybe Matt doesn't have another one. Gift Idea?
Had I known more about the subject matter of the movie I probably would have chosen Master of Reality.
I mean, I *do* love sweet leaf...
