Craig’s joke about Bergman and Bebe Anderson was very enjoyable. Thank you all for doing this, I hope you never stop. Quintet seemed like it was a burden to watch, but you made it enjoyable to watch people watch. Seeing this video might be the most fun anyone has ever had because of this movie. Thank you.

We see Matt walking away. Cut back to Craig, still in his chair, waiting on Matt to say, "And now, watch this." He doesn't say it.
"'And now, watch this.' Come on, Matt. Say it."
Cut back to Matt. The camera follows him as he walks out the door and down the street. Cut back to Craig, getting increasingly more frustrated.
"'And now, watch this'! 'And now, watch this!' Say it already!"
Back to Matt. The camera is now stationary as Matt slowly walks away from it, down the road. When he's just a dot on the horizon, we get an abrupt freeze-frame ending.

Damn it Johnson, I had only *just* gotten Send In The Clowns out of my own head after about three days because of the old Carol Burnett episode where she performs it straight, and now you've put it back!
I can't tell you fellows how glad I am that this film - a favorite of mine since adolescence - has finally received a reaction. I know it's dark, bleak and all but incomprehensible, but as you learned for yourselves, it has its fascinating aspects too. It really does reward repeat viewings (not that I actually think you'll take me up on that) and encourages you to gradually figure things out for yourself; using only the film, you can pretty well work out the basic rules of the Game. As to "self-indulgent", I suppose they meant Altman was presenting something only he (seemingly) could really understand.

I think it was a bona fide inspiration to use the empty buildings of Expo '67 as the futuristic city. (As I understand it, they sprayed fire hoses all over the place to make it look even more intensely long-term icebound.) The brilliant opening tracking shot of the snowbound train, eventually zeroing in on two specks in a universe of white upon white, sets the movie firmly in its world of dead technological dreams. I especially love the scenes in the decrepit Information Center, with the fractured crystal display screens and the eerie squeak of their swivels. And the Pentagon shape showing up everywhere is clever (Grigor's own game-pieces are starfish with five limbs). Did you notice that Tom Pierson's unsettling score makes use of the number five, too?

But I definitely did think your irreverencies were appropriate as well. These days, any movie so solemn and self-important as this virtually begs for it. You did well at throwing the unintentionally funny bits into sharp relief. (And, Matt, with your help I appreciated the final tracking shot as I never have before.)

I don't suppose by any chance you'd consider undertaking to view John Boorman's 1974 feature *Zardoz* any time soon? That's certainly an SF film like no other, and a real jaw-dropper that has to be seen to be disbelieved. If, on the other hand, it's already been under your scrutiny...well, I wish you much enjoyment of whatever you decide to see, and success in your endeavors.

The thing with Canadian cinema, and indeed, Canadian culture, is that 90% of it is simply American culture. We consume so much of American culture that more often then not, most Canadian actors and film makers simply head south because the two countries are so intertwined. You see this in music and sport as well - at some point you simply need to move to the US if you ever want to make a name for yourself outside of the small confines of the country.
Not helped by the fact that the CRTC (correctly, though the methods of doing so feel heavy handed) effectively force entertainment entities to take on Canadian content so that the Canadian entertainment industry isn't completely taken over by American works, which would have happened to begin with even if the CRTC hadn't placed these rules. So yeah, that probably leads to a lot of Canadian films specifically having that cheap, indie feel and a cold texture, as Matt pointed out. There's simply no point when more often then not, Canadian directors and screen writers, musicians and artists will eventually have to go to the US in order to further their careers in any sort of meaningful way.

I listened to the Empire Film Podcast with Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright and you are correct Matt. That’s exactly what he was trying to emulate.

As I wrote in comment under an earlier episode - I saw The French Dispatch five times on five consecutive nights, and I enjoyed it more each time.
After we filmed this, I remembered your comment, and I have to admit I felt bad that we didn't mention you and your cinema immersion tank challenge. I have to admit, I wish I had the time to do a 5 night dispatch, myself.

I read the novelization of the George Segal film "The Black Bird" when I was a kid. And some Herbie ("The Love Bug") movie.

Now you guys got me to want to read the novelization of Quintet.
It might have been the film maker's intention that people just didn't have the energy or inclination to have sex but I don't buy it as realistic in this context. Can ANYONE have the energy and enthusiasm to play a BOARD GAME but not to have sex. Somebody is gonna chime in and say "yes" but I contend that it wouldn't apply to most. Oh, and I'm not counting couples that have gotten tired of each other and would rather do ANYTHING than have sex. These are people that haven't had sex in ages with anyone. If they had energy for gaming they'd have energy for sex.
Hey guys, love the show. I wanted to share an experience I had. I was listening to your show one night and all of a sudden realised Craig’s name is “Craig”! What! Then I said, Craig is not a Craig. I could not allow myself to say Craig aloud thinking about Craig, because the name Craig does not suit Craig. Then i thought, what name suits Craig, and I believe that name to be Allen. Craig you are an Allen - nice, kind, thoughtful guy, not a Craig. But wait… then what happened was that I realised I had forgotten Craig’s last name! What is it? I vaguely remember it ends with a ‘son.’ Is it Craig Anderson, Fergusson? I could not remember, then I had to go back to the start of the episode where your names come up, and saw Craig Johnson. The nightmare was over. By the way, a seen it suggestion - have you guys seen Werner Herzog’s Aquire, The Wrath of God? I think that film is amazing!

most jaded millenial here, hated french dispatch, aesteroid city was fine. both beautifully painted pictures of un-centralized under-thought story and the obnoxious humor.

Seven Days in May, seen it?
I struggled to get through the first few chapters of Tarantino's novelization, mainly because his choice to (partly) employ the Present Tense narration. Although I understood later why he did that, I still found it a bit forced. I didn't think that the poor style might have been a conscious decision, but whether or not it was, the outcome is the same - it doesn't make it a smooth read. To illustrate, just let me just quote this: "[H]e noticed the collection of owl hoots collected in front of it". Really?
But I must say that despite all its shortcomings, it really expands the world and characters of this wonderful movie. Even if you've seen deleted scenes on the DVD/Bluray release, the book still has a lot more to offer and I was struck with a truly poignant feeling when suddenly there was no more.

We forgot to mention in our summaries that the reason he heads into the city is that there are no more seals. Stupid apocalypse.

Holy cow there’s a Once Upon a Time in Hollywood book? Sucks that the writing is bad but are there anymore scenes??? I can imagine them well enough because that is a movie where I want more from that world. Also I would argue that Brad Pitt was the lead not supporting actor of that movie.

Not a bad guess, there! But in actuality, Francha called out for "some bouza", which is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented moss. (Yuck.) The name is obviously derived from slang "booze", perhaps with a touch of Greek "ouzo" to make it more exotic and individual. 😏 🍷
I'm curious as to the reason all the dogs seemed to be the same breed. I wonder if there is some bigger meaning, or that they only could find one dog handler for their budget.

OK, now I'm wondering what the "weird Don McKellar" movie was. 'Last Night' is a favorite of mine. Callum Keith Rennie as the guy trying to complete every conceivable sex act on his giant list before the world ends is funny and sad, especially the clumsy come-on to his old friend. McKellar's awkward encounter with his former high school French teacher Genevieve Bujold, as he tries to remember and speak the correct responses to her greeting and queries in French is so very anglo-Canadian.
It's the one where McKellar's character and a friend take a road trip from Canada to New Orleans. Jello Biafra plays a border agent.

I too hated the novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I was so excited for it when it was released over the summer as I love the film, but Tarantino should stick to screenplays. He does so many things wrong and turns characters into things they weren't in the film. This is the only book that I have ever begged myself to put down.
This movie is like the final sneering wheeze of 1970's nihilism just before Reagan became President and everybody lightened the fuck up.

You know the screenplay for once upon a time in Hollywood was pretty poor too. When so little happens in a movie that you can interpret it anyway you see fit it's not good writing, just kind of a movie con.

Matt, I'm a jaded millennial (1997), I saw the French dispatch twice, once on my own, once with my dad, and I didn't liked it. I think I was just over stimulated and couldn't take in all the comedy and art that he was putting into it, and because of that just turned off at certain points. I recognize the quality, but it just didn't work for me. My dad liked it, though.
Also, I saw it the first time as a double feature with "Last Night in SoHo" have you seen it?

I stopped watching Wes Anderson's films at Life Aquatic. I'm not sure what came first: my annoyance at his one-trick pony way of directing or the fans' swooning over his one-trick pony way of directing. Hip music? Check. Stylishly cool and quirky characters? Check. Just enough twee not to be cloying? Check. Quick close-ups? Check. In any case, I'd like to see some more risk-taking from him before watching any more of his commercials. - Jaded Millennial
