What a tremendous, stellar sound and vocal technique. Personal preferences put aside, you simply cannot deny what an outstanding singer she was. Acoustic and artistic preferences are another thing. It's fine to dislike her but plain stupid to call her a bad singer.
She was the greatest opera singer who ever lived. He voice was huge, yet incredibly agile. Her top never thinned out, like it does for so many sopranos. The beauty of the sound she produced was unmatched. Her technique was never bettered, and the trill was unsurpassable. Much of her success was due to working with her husband and taskmaster, but he knew knew exactly what he was doing - and she did the work!. People complain about her diction or her lack of drama; all that improved over time. I've never been as thrilled by the sound of any other singer as much as I have by her, because what she could do with her voice no one else could.
Of the many wonders of Joan Sutherland, one is her absolute consistency! She never gave a bad performance, she was never anything less than her best --- which is already saying a lot --- and she was as brilliant in live performance as she was on recordings. Perhaps no other operatic artist matches this standard. Her "Sempre Libera" is one of the glories of opera, always thrilling, always perfectly sung, a spectacular tight-rope walk with aplomb and strength, beauty and technical brilliance. She is certainly one of the greatest sopranos of all time.
The only soprano's I've heard who could meet every technical demand of this aria are Sutherland and Callas. And the only soprano I've heard who sang Sempre Libera better than Sutherland is Callas circa 1952. She sang it with a Wagnerian sound, perfect coloratura, far better diction, and the coloring and interpretation that was beyond Sutherland. The manic desperation in the second verse, and the way she colors every repeated high C at the very end, as if each C is a different thought, is something I have to yet hear from another soprano. Technically Sutherland is the only person to match Callas in those performances. th-cam.com/video/IK-1wQoC-jk/w-d-xo.html
@@Anduril919 I'm not old enough. Recordings give a very good idea of the singers' musical artistry and technical prowess. I did hear Sutherland live several times, and she was great. Joan Sutherland had fantastic coloratura technic!! Not sure if coloratura technic is taught today. I cannot remember hearing it in recent times. What a shame!!
The tenor sounds like Richard Conrad, who recorded the album 'The Age of Bel Canto' with Sutherland and Horne. He might have been having an off night here. He was good at coloratura but had a 'billy goat' fast vibrato and thin tone.
For visuals and voice in this role, Anna Moffo was a standout. But was this 1963 from The Voice of Firestone TV program? I wish the credits were fuller. Conductor? Tenor? If it was Voice of Firestone, the tenor was probably out of their chorus!

The only tenor who did not sound "thin" next to Sutherland was Corelli in the great Huguenot staging at Scala.
