She is the greatest singer ever to have walked the earth. When I was 17 a bought out of curiosity an opera CD. It happened to be her Traviatta with Bergonzi. I was instantly transported to another dimension. I absolutely adore her. Thank you for all that you have given us! ❤
The END OF HER PRIME? She was only 49 and would sing another 11 years. Every singer of course can not last forever but she did a pretty job. But the bigger question is how do I get a copy??
@@johnpickford4222 I think her prime was 1959 - 1975. She sang until 1990. I don't consider 1976 - 1990 prime years but she remained a great singer for a number of years after 1975 but she was not as astonishing as she was in her prime.
@@williammaddox3339 Well, I don’t want agree but part of me does, a lot of me does. . I couldn’t convince the folks to celebrate my high school graduation and 18th birthday by attending THE TALES OF HOFFMAN. I didn’t hear her until ‘84 when she came to Detroit (the week after the Met tour!) for one performance of ANNA BOLENA and her 3 final NORMAs in ‘89. I regret not going to Toronto for NORMA, ADRIANA LECOUVREUR and HAMLET.
@@johnpickford4222 BTW There is a great JS recital from late in her career "Joan Sutherland in Munich Live Concert 4/29/1979", She was in stunning voice that evening. Look it up on YT
Back in the day, Sutherland and Beverly Sills were often compared. I saw them both in Traviata and Lucia. Both technical wizards. Both had beautiful tone. Without a doubt, Sutherland had a more refulgent sound, bigger and warmer. Sills had by far a more convincing characterization. I could never choose between them - they were both too great.
1975 hatte sie noch viele Jahre Zeit, die Möglichkeit, Menschen, Zuhörer, glücklich zu machen!!! Sie hat diese Zeit genutzt. Wieviel ärmer wären wir ohne die folgenden Aufnahmen?
I own a copy…this sounds much better!!! She’s the supreme queen of opera… and what a rock star! I just noticed that the last scale before the end is started again on Eb instead of G…no big deal for Joan, she just scales up to high Cs, adds a triplet or two on the way up…Now THAT is vocal technique!
Really, Joan had an astonishing instrument! But years of hearing Sills, Caballe, Price, Moffo, and Callas have brought me to a strange realization....did Dame Joan ever actually achieve a Pianissimo or even a piano? To my ear(which is trained....thanks IU), the softest she ever gets is a mezzo piano. Don't get me wrong - I love Joan ( and I told her enough times in person)....it's just my opinion. If anyone reads this and is a Joan fan, can they direct me to a recording on youtube to prove otherwise? Thanks!
@omarsomehow69 and it looks like you admire Renata Tebaldi. Help me out here - everyone raves about her, but to me she sounds just fine but has a very suspect top.
I am pleasure very much to heard her voice .Her voice is more beautiful than Callas (IMO) but last Eb is good this time? Why not more vibrato? I head record of Callas is n Mexico 1952 she did Eb great! Piecing my ears.
Regarding the high E - you're comparing two singers at very different ages. In 1952 Maria Callas was in her 20s. Joan is nearly 50 here. By that age her E had become more variable. She could sing a stellar high E into her 60s, it just wasn't as reliable.

That was the same album where I first heard Sutherland!!!!!
She wasn’t just loved - she was adored. Inspirational.
And nowadays she's worshipped 😂😱
Her instrumental-voice articulation is unbelievable!
The trills, the scales, the projection, the dynamics!
We can hear everything!
Estupenda!
instrumental voice articulation. well said.
Listening to my beautiful Joan is a moment in Heaven.
Listening again for the umteenth times, her high C's are insane!! Some are rivaling those of Nilsson. So huge and so full of ping- squillo.
I have never heard Joan sing quite so beautifully. A magnificent performance...!
This is an unbelievably vibrant performance! It's beyond exquisite!
I saw her onstage from 1973 to 1987. Of course, in 1973 she really was stupendous, but she was still a marvel in 1987 (Puritani & Trovatore).
потрясающее исполнение.
And it is from the end of her prime. Those videos are rare.

It's all been said so many times before our Joan "La Stupenda"
La Stupenda..... Maravillosa !!!!!!

I saw the Act 2, scene 1 here w/Cornell MacNeil but I though Robert Merrill sang Germont on the ‘75 Japan Tour?
The Sutherland biography lists Merrill but there were 3 MET operas that were part of the tour. Maybe MacNeil filled in for the Traviata performance?
