I think this is my favorite rendition of this aria. They're usually too soupy. The words and the meaning are dramatic enough without milking every note like a milch cow. I feel like Natalie's voice is the voice Violetta would have if she were a real person. My Italian voice teacher made me sing (read: butcher) this aria when I was like 23. Now I just cringe thinking of it and no way would I attempt it today. Kids don't try this at home! Brava Madame Dessay. Thank you for the beauty you gave us in this and your other performances.
Her interpretation is perfect, every single word is meaningful. You can really feel her tragic dilemma and the heart of her madness. It is great art !
More than a singer, more than an actress. She is a great, wonderful artist!
Seeing the presetation of this great soprano i remember of Shakespeare in Hamlet, act 3, scene 2 when he shows to the actor how to act on the stage. The presentation of this soprano deserves a bow. She was brilliant !!!
This performance sets the mark. Natalie and the director understand the heart of Violetta's dilemma. Natalie's emotive vocal interpretation matches her skill as an actress portraying a woman who is torn asunder. I don't think I mentioned her fabulous voice and singing.
How can she be so intense???? Amazing her construction of the character and how her light voice gave a completely new life to these arias!!!!
..la vita completamente nuova l'aveva gia' data la Callas. Questa e' una caricatura e siamo andati indietro. E' una esecuzione vecchia. Quattro scemenze e un vestitino non bastano. Violetta e' altra cosa.
@@fabriziogarzi9892 Dipende da quanto una persona è aperta a nuove interpretazioni. Callas, che amo, ha sicuramente segnato il personaggio, ma non è l'unico modo per farlo. Non posso ridurre Dessay a un vestitino. È meravigliosa, ognuna a modo suo. Ma va bene non essere d'accordo.

Her voice is not up to the role, but I honestly don't think I've ever seen an interpretation of this aria that so vividly portrays her wild emotions: Violetta knows she is dying and she is afraid to die, she's fighting back that fear every day. And she is determined to party like it's 1999, for as long as she can. And now, now there is this young man who has moved her heart, made her experience desire again, and makes her want to live, to stay alive so she can be with him -- and it's making her crazy. I knew this was what was happening in this aria, of course, but I don't think I'd ever SEEN it until this interpretation. I have gotten a little bored with Traviata over the years, but she really understands Violetta. Whatever her vocal problems, so what, she's human -- it's a "brava" performance for me!
I could not agree with your comments more! Insightful thoughts about the character, and a stunning performance, by a world-class soprano. Personally, I think her voice was adequate to the role.

Love that Ah Fors'e Lui. Her voice sounds like it used to in 2007except with a better lower register. Very moving.
She recognized that her voice was not for the role, but still did her best. Indeed, I think that she does not have enough voice for Violeta, but at the same time she is such an artist that her flaws are overtaken by her art.

What a beautiful interpretation of this difficult scene. Dessay's voice is gorgeous. Did her best? Well, yes. And her best is very good indeed in this scene, especially with the annoying pretty boys and the chairs that keep getting in her way. Dumb idea. Did they really think this added to Violetta's drama?
Those annoying pretty boys that you object to are the very heart of Violetta's dilemma. Natalie's emotive interpretation matches her skill as an actress portraying a woman who is torn asunder. Brava!

Non sono d'accordo con chi trova la sua voce fuori ruolo. L'avesse fatta qualche anno prima al top delle sue condizioni fisiche, ma soprattutto vocali, sarebbe andata sicuramente diversamente. Detto ciò, Il primo atto sarebbe tutto SUO!....frivola, leggera, ma alla stesso tempo malinconica, consapevole delle sue condizioni di salute e di donna da compagnia senza futuro! Brava....

per affrontare Violetta ci vuole la tecnica e la vocalità adatta à questo personaggio complesso.
durante la sua carriera Dessay non cantava con la vocalità italiana e la tecnica ancora meno.
dal vivo era così.
negli anni 60 non entrava nell'Accademia con questo suo modo di cantonare perché la concurenza era enorme.
questa è la verità.

Pour le petit couac sur le "trepido desire", c'est pas ce qu'il y a de plus grave, ce que j'admire c'est qu'elle ait réussi le Contre Mi bémol (si je ne fais pas erreur). Contrairement au Met en Avril, où elle l'a raté mais pardonnons-lui elle était malade.
en Octobre, je vais surement aller voir "La fille du régiment" mais j'ai quand même un peu peur de l'état de sa voix. A ce qu'il parait elle devrait s’arrêter en 2015..

j'aime beaucoup. Au moins une cantatrice qui n'a pas une voix stridente. Elle a des mediums absolument fantastiques.
Great Job ! C'est pas son plus grand rôle mais la voix y est, les intonations sont en parfaite adéquation avec son jeu d'actrice (qui entre parenthèse est phénoménal comme à son habitude) donc je trouve qu'elle ne mérite pas toutes les critiques que l'on fait sur elle. Combien de sopranos peuvent prétendre à une aussi grande qualité vocale tout en galopant comme elle le fait ? (Et pour ceux qui disent qu'ils sont stressés par le fait qu'elle saute partout parce que ça risque de faire craquer sa voix, détendez vous bordel, c'est Natalie Dessay quand même!) Sa voix commençait déjà à fatiguer à l'époque mais arriver à sortir une Traviatta pareille en fin de carrière, très peu peuvent y prétendre.
Il est vrai pourtant que je la préfère pourtant dans Lucia de Lammermoor, où dans des opéras français tels que Les Contes d'Hoffmann ou Lakmé, où, à mon humble avis, elle reste indétrônable....
Pas de problème sur la qualité de l’artiste et de sa carrière mais ici on entend les limites de sa voix qu’elle sauve par sa technique ...manque de justesse parfois , limite de la rupure dans certains aigus et mezza-vocce , le rôle est lourd et demande de l’agilité , il ’est plus sûr qu’elle soit encore capable de chanter sans risque le répertoire "d’agilité " où elle excellait

Ok, judge me, but even with all Natalie's vocal issues and the role not fitting well for her, I'd prefer this performance which is emotional and audacious than all divas from the past like Caballé or Tebaldi which were cold and not devoted to the role (this one)! Callas of course is the owner of Violetta.

Dessay no tiene ni en cualidad ni en cantidad la voz para cantar Violetta, pero tampoco Lucia, Elvira, Amina, y ni siquiera Marie. A fuerza de apretar y empujar ha sacado de su pequeña voz mucho más provecho del que se podía esperar, pero vocalmente sólo le podemos conceder actuaciones realmente buenas cuando se dedica a un repertorio adecuado a la ligereza de su voz. Creo que su falla del segundo 3:58 muestra claramente que está siempre caminando sobre vidrios rotos.

Absolument d'accord! C'est pourtant vrai qu'elle réussie à faire avec sa petite voix si peu compatible avec le chant italien beaucoup plus de ce qu'on pourrait attendre, mais ça lui a déjà coûté, peut-être, la possibilité de chanter irreprochablement ce qu'elle pouvait chanter. Je trouve que la faute de 3:55 prouve bien qu'elle chante avec un technique questionable. Il ne faut pas pousser comme ça une voix si légère, hélas!

Why is it every time I see Dessay, she always looks angry and confused and does that weird stooping of her posture? Pretty sure Violetta isn't supposed to be and falling all over men... the weird staging doesn't help either. :/
Elle a quelques problèmes vocaux dû au fait qu'elle a chanté un rôle très risqué "Violetta" qui n'était pas pour elle mais elle l'a fait et elle s'en est bien sortie.Je te recommande le DVD c'est d'une délicatesse... C'est une véritable actrice comme on n'en trouve peu dans ce monde lyrique. Je pense qu'elle doute sur sa carrière, elle essaie de se reconvertir au monde du spectacle, du théâtre.

This role is too big for her voice. She sang too many of these and that caused her vocal decline. Still love her though.

On ne peut pas mettre en scène un opéra (qui date de deux siècles auparavant) de la sorte. Certe Natalie Dessay chante merveilleusement bien mais a quoi bon aller à l'opéra si c'est pour voir des personnages en costars, comme dans le vie de tous les jours, au bureau par exemple?

Pour le coup, c'est plutôt la mise en scène que je trouve sans vrai intérêt même si c'est plutôt beau à regarder, je ne vois pas trop la finalité... Effectivement Mme Dessay perd une partie de sa belle voix et on est tendu avec elle tout le long de l'air... pas très confortable à regarder

J'adore Natalie Dessay, mais j'exprime quand même un peu mon mécontentement. La première fois que j'ai vu cette vidéo, ça m'a d'abord surpris puis après attristé. J'ai 15 ans et j'adore l'opéra.

Oh fidati, lo dicevano anche della Callas che non avesse tecnica... Le mandavano biglietti invitandola a cantare con i cani, le contrapponevano altre cantanti dalla voce più potente... E comunque, "poco suono", a me non pare proprio; ma in ogni caso, anche fosse, rimedia come sempre l'accento: ovvero la capacità di cogliere e disegnare il personaggio, di impersonarlo con intelligenza drammatica e carattere. E questo c'è, in abbondanza.
Immense Nathalie ! Enfin du Verdi qui ne ressemble pas à du "Verdi". Ca fait du bien ! Merci !
