Define Generic Section in STAAD for Analysis and Design | Difference of General & Prismatic Section

  • Do you know what is the difference between a general and a prismatic section in STAAD and proper usage of these categories?
Use of a built-up steel section in any commercial or industrial project is very common. As per the design requirements, if the available hot rolled sections are not sufficient or economic, then we need to use a built-up section. There are different ways to define a built-up section in STAAD which can be further used for design.
In this video, I have discussed about different methods available in STAAD to define any random section for analysis and design and what are the differences between a General and a Prismatic section.
Also I have discussed how to generate a section easily using profile points and from the section wizard.

Hi! Do you have any reference to calculate warping constant for built-up steel section? For example, H-shape + Tee shape. The warping constant is based on the property of the generated general section and is not based on the actual shape of the built-up section.

You can consult Roark's Book of formulas.

Thankyou for your continously sharing it helps a lot.It is very clear now why if I use prismatic, design check did not perform..

built up section created with section wizard.
    1. found I -major axis value is Iy and I- Minor is Iz, which is reverse in Staad. hence we export to staad, the values is not matching. can you please verify and reply.
    2. when the member is assigned, user defined(built up section). and when run analysis is clicked, the structure is stopping saying verification of member properties. upt file is saved at the same file path, where staad file *.std is also avialble. please verify and reply.

I can remember both of these problems existed in an older version of STAAD and were fixed in later version. Which version of STAAD you are using? Also, I need to check the upt file that you have created, so it is better if you can raise this query in Bentley Communities forum and upload this .upt file for review.

when i export it to general section it pop up "Profile points for the shape will not be exported" please help me thanks in advance

Just click on Yes and proceed, it's a reminder about the internal logic set for general section. If the profile points are used to create the section, it no longer stores in the memory during export, but all other properties are exported. So, that section can be used for analysis.

    How to create Rod sir

You can use user table Pipe section with zero inner dia or add the rod property under standard database (Dutch section database - solid round).
