  • Have you ever wondered why in PEB industry, tapered sections are used as a rafter or column member? Is it only for economic design? Also, how these tapered profiles and section depths are calculated along the span?
    If we design a steel structure in STAAD using traditional design approach, then we need to manually review the design results and change the section size so that the optimum section is used. This process is time consuming, also it is very hard to find out the most economic section by trial and error method.
    Optimization does not mean use of an economic section only, rather we need to ensure proper distribution of material where it is required. And with this approach, we can further reduce the steel quantity and overall construction cost of any structure.
    In this video, I will cover the basics of tapered member design, how the profiles are determined, how the section depth at various location is fixed. Also I will cover the factors which affect the section selection process including high shear, interaction and serviceability conditions.

      I have developed this only for IS800:2007 code at this moment. Several OpenSTAAD functions which are required for tapered optimization are not available and I have to develop the entire Indian design code engine by myself to make this work. Unless those functions are implemented, I am not in a position to implement tapered optimization for other design codes, hence this will not be published soon.

    Hello Surojit Sir, your work is fabulous in the field of automation. Can we prepare same MTO for RCC as well?

    • @surojit_ghosh
      @surojit_ghosh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This template can be used to extract concrete information (volume, weight). But right now reinforcement information cannot be extracted using this. As there is no direct function available to get the reinforcement information for any concrete member, it is a bit tricky to extract the bar information. Also RCDC can generate a very extensive BOM for concrete member. That's why I have not included this facility in the MTO template. I will include concrete member in future.

    sir, please make a video on connection designs especially that of bracings.

    • @surojit_ghosh
      @surojit_ghosh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know, it is really very easy to design any connection including horizontal and vertical bracing connection directly using the STAAD model data using integrated connection design module. If you assign a connection tag to any member, then the end connection is designed automatically once the analysis is complete, else you need to manually assign the connection template and design.
      I have some plans to create a new video series on connection design. Keep watching.

    How to design castaletted beam? What are the checks we should do?

    • @surojit_ghosh
      @surojit_ghosh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure which design code you are referring to. For Indian design code, there is no specific guideline for castellated member design. If you want to know about the design rules and different checks, go though DG31 code. Also you can check part 6A of this optimization series for more details.

      Are you referring to the wind and seismic load combination factor 0.6? Check table 4 of IS800:2007 code, you can notice for limit state of strength, the combination factor is mentioned as 0.6 (DL+LL+CL+WL/EL).

    sir , please tell us how to optimize tapered members please

    • @surojit_ghosh
      @surojit_ghosh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no in-built option available in STAAD to optimize any taper member. We can manually optimize it, by guessing the dimensions, but it will take more time and will not be accurate. We can guess a range of section depth(which I have discussed in this video) and then go for trial and error. But the most efficient way to optimize a section is by using any custom macro. Optimization is a multi-step approach where depending on the selected section, section forces are modified and that further changes the section dimension. So it is always better to take the help of any software or any custom macro.
