    Here's what the reverse button does Sean. It's very simple, it has nothing to do with the bike. The bike doesn't move, it makes the Earth go backwards. Yes, I know it is hard to believe but remember, this is Honda we're talking about.
    P S, The Gold Wing started out in life as the king sport bike so it has the gene pool to be quick and nimble.

    Not as heavy as they look?? Wanna bet?? They are big HEAVY motorcycles. They are very well balanced with a low center of gravity so their mass isn't as evident once they're moving as it might seem it would be. However, moving them around at low speeds, walking speeds, can be very challenging. The fact that they have a reverse on the bike is a good indication of just how massive they are because there will be times when you're really going to need it. Don't get me wrong, I rode a GL1500 for 7 years. They're great motorcycles, but they are also very massive motorcycles.
    One your comment about the transmission? Yeah, it's "only" a 5-speed. The problem is, in my opinion, is that it could easily accommodate one more gear. My GL1500 was spinning 3000 rpms at 70 which is ok, but always seemed somewhat faster than it needed to be. It had plenty of power, no need to downshift to pass 90% of the time, but it always felt to me that it was spinning way faster than it needed to be. Add a 6th gear and drop 200 to 300 rpm at 70 mph. It would offer more relaxed cruising rpm at freeway speeds and maybe help fuel economy too. The one thing I was always disappointed in with my GL1500, was it's cruising range. On long road trips, I was usually looking at the low fuel light around 175 miles and sucking fumes to get to 200, if I could get to 200 miles on one tank. I thought that was way short for a dedicated touring bike. Most touring bikes I've owned would make 225 to 250 miles before thinking about reserve. For me, sub 200 mile cruising range for a dedicated touring bike is not acceptable. The GL1800 went to fuel injection and added 0.6 gallons of fuel capacity and could easily make 200 miles on a tank. If my GL1500 had been there, I probably would have hung on to it longer. It's not the fuel economy itself that bothered me, just the limited cruising range.

    My "87" Suzuki GV 1400 Cavalade LXE was "King of the Hill" when it came out. 1400cc Vs. 1200, Auto-Leveler for extra rider or trailer, Hose to air up a tire, Air comfort bags in front & Back seats & 2 in backrest, Auto volume on sound system: loud truck pulls up it get louder. All before anyone else.

    The reverse button inserts a cogwheel between the startermotor and the gearbox, making it turn backwards very slowly. Therefore it only works when the gearbox is in neutral. You can imagine why.

    I bought my first Golwing last week. I'm 6'3" with my riding boots on. Its a 2007 with 29,000 miles on it. Very good low price. I ride Harleys, since 1979. Started with a brand new Superglide in 79. Now I have a Electra Glide and a Fatboy. Heres my review first time ever riding a Goldwing, GW. Yes its smooth, whatever speed you want, its smooth and quiet. It goes through the gears quick. I think the shifting of gears on my Electra Glide, EG. is smoother, when releasing the clutch and giving the throttle that transition is smoother on the EG. I'm 6'3", I must get some highway pegs for the GW. I must be able to stretch my legs forward. I feel like a jockey sitting on a racehorse without forward placement of my legs, highway pegs will fix that. The GW does indeed respond quickly. It actually feels as tho I'm riding a small bike, .... 600cc? Very nimble. It is nice to have a reverse on the GW. The rear brake pedal requires some downward movement, more than my EG but that's just something to get use to.The GW is well balanced. At any cruise speed it is nothing to take both hands off the bars and maintain a straight line. It's nice to hear the radio without blasting the volume. I like the GW a lot. I think it's a very DEPENDABLE motorcycle. Arguably the best built motorcycle in the world .... but..... There is just something magical about riding a Harley Davidson. The EG just feels soo good. I rode the GW for one week then yesterday I rode my EG and .... if I had to choose one over the other.... I'll take the Electra Glide.

    Sean, this is how the reverse works on a Goldwing. You push the button that says REV. That alerts the little gnome under the plastic where the gas tank is on normal motorcycles. The bike must be in neutral and running for reverse to work. The little gnome then sends a message to the genomes that live in the saddle bags and top bag. Then, when you hit the start button, the little genomes put their feet on the back wheel and voila, they run very slowly causing the rear wheel to power the bike backwards... This is simple physics that genomes are known to cause. They also drink beer and bowl under all that plastic... Rip Van Winkle experienced this general genome factor and made it famous enough to have a book written about "The little genome factor", which was changed to fit the story books for young children, but colleges expanded the use in their English Literature classes. So, now you know that Honda has hired and retained millions of little genomes to power up their reverse gear on Honda Goldwings... True story, "trust me", as any politician would say... If your reverse gear stops working, yell under the Goldwing and put some beer under the bike. Come back an hour later and the reverse "method" will then hopefully work. If that does not work, you must have pissed off your genomes and are screwed.

    I would like that 6th gear myself. Not to go faster, but drop the RPMs at cruising speed.

    • @TheGamersRace
      @TheGamersRace 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A 6th gear wouldn't necessarily drop the rpms in final drive. It could just change the distance between shifting, making the gears shorter. That could be bad.

      @@TheGamersRace cruising on the Interstate at 80-85mph, your at 4,000+ rpm. Even though 5th is overdrive, wouldn't a higher gear bring down the rpms and as such increase mpg?

    • @TheGamersRace
      @TheGamersRace 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ronfriedman8740 Only if that higher gear had a ratio higher than the final gear of the 5 speed. If 5th gear has a ratio of 1.1:1 and you change to a 6 speed transmission with 6th gear being a ratio of 1.1:1 then your RPMS would be exactly the same. The only thing that matters to decrease the RPM in final drive is the Ratio, not the number of gears. You could just as easily just change the ratio of 5th gear to get better gas mileage. Even lowering the RPM wouldn't necessarily produce better gas mileage, it just depends. It usually does, though.

    I wouldn’t recommend that shop to let you test a new machine. This black wing with a cold engine temp just got almost max rpm straight. That seems a motor to get overhaul in a premature mileage. Of course many do it when test things they don’t own, but it creates other expenses for the new owners to rebuild what others break.

    Two things; 1st, Air bags on motorcycles, .. no! No air bags we die like Real Men. 2nd, Goldwing's, like most big bikes, DO not handle well inasmuch as they do not change direction well. It's physics, .. just too much mass. I had a 96 Kawasaki Voyager 1200, which was the equal to and direct competition to the then GW 1.2 liter. It weighed over 750+ pounds. I could lean that over like a sport bike until pegs and crash bars started to scape but getting it going in a different direction was a whole different issue. Also, after 3MPH all bikes are pretty easy to ride because at that point its all about technique not muscle. I don't care who you are after 3MPH if your technique isn't right you WILL be picking gravel out of your forehead.
