2023 Mitsubishi Triton Xtreme review: New 4WD rival to Nissan Navara Warrior and Toyota HiLux Rogue!

  • The 2023 Mitsubishi Triton mid-size pick-up finally has a proper off-road-focused rival to the locally engineered Nissan Navara PRO-4X Warrior and Toyota HiLux Rogue. Enter the aptly named Triton Xtreme. It's produced by Walkinshaw, the parent company of former Australia car manufacturer Holden Special Vehicles (HSV).
While not quite on the same level as the circa-300kW Ford Ranger Raptor, the Triton Xtreme still throws the gauntlet down when it comes to 4WDing, offering adventurers even more 4x4 capability - and tougher looks. Simple recipe, right?
Well, in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Dave Morley puts the new Triton Xtreme through its paces on- and off-road to see if really has what it takes to challenge the establishment. Either way, the next-generation Triton will be with us soon, so it'd better be good if buyers are going to forgo waiting for the new model.

About time you had a reviewer, that actually knows what they are talking about

Dave's rating 6.5/10 is actually pretty poor. He talked it up quite a bit, then hit us with a surprisingly low score. Left me a little confused to be honest 🤔

He's reviewing a gsr with new tyres and some random suspension thing. Everything else is the same. It's a 1/10 effort from mits

I’m commenting before I watch this review because I wanted to say that on appearance alone they got the right guy to review a Ute called extreme

Good review. I'll keep my MY23 Triton GLS at nearly $20k cheaper then the Xtreme. I might even get a set of aftermarket suspension and ATs as well.

😂😂😂$71990 Triton extreme added few things on it that make the car look nice, bit better suspension and that's it.
Gls with premium leather seats $59000
    Add BFG tyres, $1800-$2000,
    Suspension $3500
    Decals few hundred $$$
    Flares around $700
    bash plates around $750.
$7000+ worth of upgrades, that regular people can add on!!!
    Still save around $5000-$6000.
I have a glx+ Triton, with heavily modified with accessories and it still hasn't hit $70000. The only thing i wish it had was keyless entry and start and led lights. Been towing light pod trailer and been off-road, high country, never missed a bit, never felt underpowered, and 4wd system is mint!!!
Not really worth the $$$ for the extreme but just like every other ute seller, they are doing the same thing!!

Just a reminder WAG also did the GMH Colorado SportsCat and that failed to get any market share with a near similar makeover set up.

If you buy the GLS (as the gsr is a rip off in itself, 6k more for black plastic and a roller cover), you can pay under 50k easily. You could chuck 20k worth of good quality mods and make it blow any factory 4x4 out of the water in terms of capability and feature, and probably have a couple of thousand left over for fuel to go for drives.

*FOR $72,000, one would expect that MITSUBISHI would include gas struts to the bonnet/hood as part of the package* . *The EL CHEAPO* steel prop rod is a glaring example of what it, and some other Auto Manufacturers really think of their customers. In a word, they don't *THINK* For pity's sake, back in the 1950s/1960s we had spring loaded hinges that lasted the life of the vehicle. LDV's T60 and T90 costing $30,000 less use gas struts. Forget what your dislikes may be about Chinese manufactured vehicles, the argument is, if they can do it, Mitsubishi and the other cheapskates can do it also. In fact it's no secret, that the current crop of Chinese manufactured Utes/Pick Ups are better equipped in comfort, and safety tech, etc. They've truly lifted their game where it matters. One vehicle of note will be the 2023 GWM Shanhai Cannon, Ute, whose top spec variant will come with a V6 engine, and an interior that looks like it was influenced by a Bentley Mulsanne. That said, I've not heard if it will be released in Australia. If so, it's price may be somewhere around $57,000 or a little higher. It's SUV sibling is the Tank 500, is as big as the Toyota Land Cruiser LC300 to give you a perspective of it's size.
As a footnote, the GWM Tank 500 is exported to Russia in huge numbers, and one uploaded Vlogg here to TH-cam, runs a business, whereby he completely disassembles new vehicles and reports his findings here. His report on the GWM Tank 500's body structure and strengthening support ribs was favorable Cheers and drive safe...

Mind you other brands do the same. Never buy top of the range..

exterior looks tuff still, interior is bad, engine is weak, but end of the day the average joe can get all this extra gear done for half the cost.

If you actually wanted to go off-road you vould get a new Navarra Warrior SL and add a snorkel, winch, CB radio, canopy and probably even a 2nd battery for less

I love my Triton but this isn't worth $20k more. You could spend under $10k on a GLS and it'd be way better

Honestly such a pointless spec , do not buy this.
Buy the GLS or GSR for $53k & the same mods to build this thing will cost you $3-4k with better gear.
This Xtreme is just a sticker spec Triton

No tech upgrade, no bed liner, no performance upgrade, no full body bash plate, no bullbar yet its over $12k more than the GSR. Really dont know whos buying this, whos brainiac idea it was and then who approved it.

Well of course the buyers have endless pockets. They are mostly tradeis who do cash in hand jobs and pay almost no taxes. Whatever little tax they pay they can reclaim by buying vehicles like this for "work" related purposes.
