    I remember my old boy getting a musso back in '05. for the price he paid, he got 300,000kms and 10 years out of it. Taught me how to drive in it and everything. it died slowly after the 8 year mark, but for a 4x4 under $30k you cant beat that. The worst part about it is listening to Hilux and Ranger owners talk with their heads up their own arses.

    I've been driving Ssangyongs for the last 8 years and just bought another one last week, because you stick with something that you know is good.
    So I test driven the Musso and despite all the perceived negative comments I did not feel uncomfortable with any of the performances. I bought one the same day and am impressed with the safety and comfort experienced. Pulling a caravan does provide a more valid load test and such an experience would put the Musso in a good spot. Never understood why this assessment was not included in the review?
    Now after 2 nearly two years of driving the Musso and crossing the Nulllabor with a 1.8 tome Caravan, followed by a 12000km trip to Darwin and the rugged Kimberly with a three tome caravan I can confirm the Musso can do it. The only thing that I missed under certain conditions was a few more "horses" under the bonnet. This was apparent when experiencing strong headwinds over long distances travelling in the outback. I often had to trim the travel speed down to 80 - 85 km/hour to keep the engine out of extreme strain and fuel consumption (26ltr/100km). I must stress that travelling under normal conditions the Musso moves comfortably at a 100km/hr using an average of 17-18 ltr/100km. I spoke on the trips with many campers with other vehicles and their experiences were not much different even with bigger engines. I have now 70000km on the clock with most of it doing it tough but so far it shows no signs of fatigue.

    I own a 2020 musso XLV long wheel base which has the largest tray in this segment. It has leaf springs and is rated to carry 1050kg and tow 3500kg combined.
    It tows my caravan of 3000kg with ease and has the same engine out put as the tritan.
    I paid $34 000 on the road with tow bare and tray cover along with all the extras over a tritan.
    I drove both utes and more and found the musso to be the better ute over the tritan and the best ute over all for bang for your buck.

    A lot of utes are sold to people who don’t really need a Ute.
    They don’t tow or carry huge weight. This includes Ranger and Lux owners too.
    This Musso has a readymade market. Priced well and looks good. I reckon they will sell 2500 in the first year. Providing the dealers do the right thing and they prove to be reliable, sales will double the year after.
    That’s my prediction.

    If you said the name "ssangyong" 10 years ago, the reply would have been distant screams as the person you spoke to ran for the hills! However lose the stupid 20" wheels, add a longer tray and some leaf springs and these days you have a serious contender. I dont think it will ever out sell the triton, but theres no contesting the value with the trim level, long warranty, capped price servicing, and buy in price. Would love to see an entry level manual test and comparison. Better than a great wall thats for sure. Get used to them guys, i believe we'll be seeing a lot more of these in years to come!

      so why dosen't the name ssangyong 10 years later still not make you scream and run for the hills? what recognition do they deserve? they shouldent even be mentioned in the same sentence as Mitsubishi Triton. th ed 7 year warranty seems to be there claim to fame.... huh big deal. the quality vehicles dont need the warranty. if people are happy to keep fixing a car and not pay a cent then perfect but the real ute owners that use them for trades dont want to be off the road even if the repair cost nothing. time is worth more money. i guess its inevitable that such a popular segment will become flooded with crap. everyone want a piece of thd pie.

      @@cenzofrisina6517 what recognition does mitsubishi deserve? They've been around longer... thats about it! Mitsubishi are certainly not the most reliable manufacturer selling in australia right now. They rely on value and a long warranty for sales. All I'm pointing out is that Ssangyong seem to have pipped them at the post in both of these areas. Mitsubishi also have a 7 year warranty but its capped at 150ks. The ssangyong is not. Mitsi has capped price servicing, but it stops at 3 years where the ssangyongs doesnt. If you spec to a similar trim level with the triton, then the price is exponential! Unlimited km warranties are becoming the nowm now. It shows confidence in a product. Would the triton sell in the same numbers with no warranty? I doubt it. What experience do you have with a new ssangyong that proves it unreliable? Not that long ago hyundais and kias were horrible, now theyre well built cars that sell in the masses. Back in the 80s and early 90s mitsubishi's were unreliable, underpowered and uneconomical shitboxes, that now do their best to meet the market. It is possible through research and development for a manufacturer to develop an acceptable product. I suggest you have a closer encounter with the product before judgement. You may find theyre not as bad as you think.

    The Musso is a family twin cab ute with a soft and more refined feel where the Triton in a higher spec tradie ute. To compare the two and pronounce the Triton a "winner" it not a fair comparison of what market they are intended for. Like matching a commodore to a Rolls Royce. Both 4 door sedans but each focused of a different buying market. For me its the Musso. A great all round family twin cab for the urban life we lead. Good for picking up the kids and able to take a load to the tip on the w/end. Not as hard edged as the triton who i would suspect is marketed to the w/end 4wd male buyers looking for the occasional off road or the week day tradie.

    Mitsubishi need better QC regarding their painting sub assemblies, whoever the operator is mixing the paint is far off what the chassis is being sprayed on the assembly line. Look at the colour match difference on the Blue, Grey, Pearl white front bars to front guards. Paint does look different on plastic, but that's a pretty big difference. Looks like the clear is satin. Other than that, the Triton is great.

  • @frankpinion4937
    @frankpinion4937 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's to be expected that the triton would feel better with weight in the back as it's probably got useless leaf springs. However if the triton is empty then you'd find it would be as stiff as in the back. Leaf springs unless you're a farmer and putting big loads in the back and totally useless as they are too rigid unless loaded. Coil springs or even better air bag suspension is superb and gives a very good ride quality. Most people would very rarely put that sort of load in the back however they might want to tow something with it, more than likely. As you say if you're a tradey and like to leave it loaded up then go for leaf spring option.

    Dang it SsangYong, 20" dubs?? If the Musso goes on sale here in SA, that would immediately rule it out for most lifestyle families or farmers. Our country roads and those of our neighbouring countries (which many Saffers will visit with their bakkie (ute)) are just as rough as those in the Outback and, apart from likely tyre failure with those wheels life will be hell inside. A shame, because the rest looks great for the price. The Musso was always meant to be a luxury sport utility ute rather than a full on workhorse but now it's pretty much useless off the tarmac. Bring it out with 17" rims and all-terrain tyres!

    Maybe because most of these utes never go off road? I want to like the Musso much more than the Triton. It seems that the Musso has lots more positives and only three negatives - load capacity, high speed steering feel, and ride. I may buy a ute soon, and I hate the thought of paying more than $40K for one. Hopefully the ride will be improved by the Ironman tuning, and hopefully the steering isn't too bad (but steering feel is important), and as for the load capacity, I can't see me loading 700Kg in the back ever. I guess if the Musso can't pass my steering and ride acceptability test, then its back to the drawing board. Or the good quality, the warranty, and the features, including all the safety features, may win me over. I recently drove a 3.2 Ranger, and it was awful!

    • @Ray147
      @Ray147 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This would be for private use only, mainly towing a small racing car and its trailer around. I still need to carry stuff around, nothing too heavy, and carry passengers. I don't need to go off road. It needs to be comfortable and well appointed. The 4x4 comes standard, so I have no choice there, and at $40K for the top model, its still below the low range Triton spec. Look at all the utes driving around now. They rarely have their trays full up.

    Another point worth mentioning, is that the Musso has, gas stuts for the bonnet/hood, whereas the Triton has the dreaded prop support rod, which can only be interpreted as mean spirited on Mitsubishi's part, as the paltry price difference would not be something that prospective buyers would whinge about. Come on Mitsubishi, it's 2020, time to lift your game somewhat...

    • @lukey139

      @@lukey139 My main opposition to the prop rod is it's hindrance to working around the engine bay, whereas gas struts do not. As for wearing out over time, make that a bloody long time. You may remember vehicles from the 1950s to the 1970s, where bonnets/hoods were spring loaded, which on my 1966 Holden HR, up until the day I sold it in 2008, not once needed adjustment, including the pivoting pins. Also, just about every make of car on the road today has a similar spring loaded mechanism to open the boot lid/trunk, or by gas struts. No, Auto Manufacturers concluded they could shave a few dollars by doing away with a spring loaded bonnet/hood with it's intricate hinge-pin setup, by adding a prop rod, and lighter weight hinge etc. Cheers, and thanks for your feedback...
