WARNING! $5300 MSI GT77 BRICKED! $4000 GE78HX BRICKED!

  • As I was updating my MSI GT77 and GE78HX gaming laptops both laptops were bricked by a crash while it was a 3% done with the update. I have no clue what's going on or why it crashed, but it is incredibly frustrating. I have already sent the MSI GT77 back to MSI for repair. I will have to also send the GE78HX back for repairs as well. For now, my advice is to DO NOT UPDATE BIOS until MSI can replicate and prevent this from happening again next time. I know some users were able to update successfully, but I have also heard of several others where the bios updates had failed. I will update pinned comment once I hear more back from MSI!

At this point, I would NOT recommend updating the BIOS on the GT77 or GE78, unless you have to. I will update this comment when I get more info from MSI, and they have assured me that the bios updating tool crashing bug has been addressed. UPDATE 1: Called MSI support. They said that I have to go to their website and setup a RMA online. They could not do it over the phone. The support rep literally said "I do not recommend updating the bios unless you absolutely have to". UPDATE 2: I created an MSI account, registered the GE78HX, and created a ticket requesting help. I hope I don't have to pay for shipping. UPDATE 3: MSI has examined the GT77/GE78, and they said that the bios updates failed because of undervolting settings that were still applied to the laptop, even though I had set the undervolts back to "0" before updating. I suggested and they are working on revising their update methodology to force bios settings to default values before applying updates in the future automatically. They are also working on adding a bios update backup methodology so that even if a bios update fails the laptop will still be recoverable without having to be sent back to MSI in future laptops.

HOLD ON TRY THIS FIRST!: I have a GT77 HX 13VI and the reset worked for me but when you do the reset trick using the power button, you have to have the power adapter unplugged from the laptop while you are holding down the button waiting for the flashes. Then you plug the laptop back into the external AC power supply and make sure the power supply light is on and all that and the laptop is getting good external power and then you press the power button again to start it up. It takes forever the first time it starts up and will probably cycle through the logo screen a few times. I thought mine was bricked but did the reset this was exactly as described in the manual following those steps with the power adapter and it worked. Mine didn't brick on a BIOS update though, it bricked after changing the ram speeds. Page 2-4 "Battery Reset"

So in short, from what I see in this video, you didn't plug it back in after the flashing power light before you pressed the button for the second time.

MSI have one of the worst BIOS update processes compared to all the other brands. Everyone else has evolved past sticking a file on a USB stick, they should too. Weird considering how much more option the BIOS gives you compared to others, maybe those are related.

Hey Giz! I have the same laptop (GT77). The update is not technically an update because it's a bug that destroys the entire BIOS system so we just have to wait for the next update that will resolve the issue. I contacted MSI and shipped it back to them already.

15 years ago? Yeah, you could have bricked it. Those were the times when sometimes a motherboard had 2 BIOS, one was backup in case your default bricked after update. They tried to solve the problem like that. But today? In case of a failure, it usually reverts the update and reset to default and that's it. Unless a producer fucks up, like in this case, you're safe.

The general rule of thumb in the 90s was don't update your BIOS unless you have a problem with your computer. With that said, this is unacceptable but not uncommon with new products. I just wait until there are three or four updates available before tweaking any new rig.

  • @highlanderc
    @highlanderc ปีที่แล้ว +6

In this day and age I do NOT understand why this happens. There should be an area that never ever gets changed/updated that allows you to flash the previous bios. They also need to allow previous version flash. This is getting ridiculous.
This doesn't happen on vehicle ECMs and this should be the same way.

This happened to a bunch of people with the 1440p 165hz MSI monitor I own as well. It didn't happen to me since I read about it first, but a bunch of people got a bricked monitor after doing a firmware update from MSI's own website.
They basically didn't give the full instructions on how to update the firmware and people had their monitors bricked due to their lackadasical instructions. Sad to see it happening with their laptops too.

I also tweeted this to MSI but it doesn’t matter what you tweet to MSI they simply ignore everything. Not good enough.
With regards to the Bios update problem. I updated my GE78 4090 the day the update came out without any problems.

I just ran into this exact same problem less than 24 hours after getting my GE78HX. The update crashed at exactly 4%. I decided to fix it myself as I had a CH341A programmer. Well, turns out that the standard included clip isn't physically compatible with this laptop's BIOS chip. I had to order a different one and waited for nearly a week. With the correct clip and the CH341A programmer, I was able to reflash the BIOS and the laptop was back to business.
This is unacceptable. A $5000 laptop should not be expected to require such advanced methods of fixing. I did NOT set any undervolt whatsoever in the BIOS and yet it still happened.

I have already dealt with this situation with an MSI laptop. 1. hold the power button for 30 sec, it takes a long time and several restarts before MSI re-introduces all the settings of the laptop, about 3 - 5 min. let run. 2. After connecting the power adapter, it just started loading. laptop after BIOS reset with power button 30sec. 3. In case of a major problem with the BIOS, holding down the F1 and F4 buttons at the same time as the Power button has proved useful for some models. I updated BIOS in extended BIOS mode ( left ALT + right CTRL + right SHIFT + F2 ), you can test whether it will work properly.

@gizmoslip I had a similar issue with an asus strix g 17 and I actually had done all you just did for a month because bluetooth refused to work and bluetooth drivers and bios kept dropping out..... I was determined not to pay to ship it back to asus. I finally called Asus and they had me hold F2 and power for a few seconds and the laptop was fixed..... just like that. It's really frustrating you spend so much $$ and then things that seem so simple become so difficult on a elite machine.

This sucks, and it's made worse because MSI doesn't have next-day, onsite support available like Lenovo and Dell. That is one area where Lenovo and Dell both shine. I haven't needed to use Leno's support, but I have used Dell/Alienware, and it was exactly as advertised. This situation is enough for me to give MSI a wide pass until they can sort out this issue and others I have with their machines.

What else do you need than this guy's videos and Jarrod's? They pretty much cover the subject.
At this moment, at least based on their videos, some research and my subjective opinion and my subjective needs, Scar 16 is the most balanced laptop you can get. It doesn't suck at any particular aspect, everything is at least good about it. And there is no laptop that is great at everything. Sadly. But we hear about its issues, excessive coil whine and also some laptops with RTX 4xxx, including Scar, have some stability issues. Because of such problems, which shouldn't happen, I'd wait and see how it develops. Some manufacturers like to avoid solving problems and cover under the carpet.
But the rest is your needs e.g. Scar doesn't have as many USB ports as some other laptops offer, for instance. Or maybe you don't care about a crappy display so you can consider Legion Pro 7. Maybe you want the smallest and the lighest possible with full power of CPU and GPU, consider Razer with their extra compact Blade 16, but also significantly smaller and lighter power supply than the others. Gotta answer for yourself. It's not like you will be unsatisfied with any of those top tier latest laptops. They have just different pros and cons.

It now costs around 2180 USD (previously it was 2800). Will it be better than 3070ti? or will this gpu equally perform with RTX 4070? And will it be good enough for solid content creation? please give me a reply.

@@GizmoSlipTech Even though I did not download firmware from any MSI site, I experienced the same problem twice on my ge77hx laptop. After installing a program, it asked me to restart. I restarted and the bios was completely erased. I barely returned the product. Now they will give me a high-end laptop.
