  • My new 10 year old generator lasted 2 hours before it quit making power. Grrr! No one in this area works on the electrical part of these generators so had to figure it out myself.
    Thanks for Watching

Matt clipped a zip tie when in the process of changing the AVR. Just a suggestion to anyone doing the same. the zip tie needs to be replace to avoid wiring being sucked into rotor and damaging the windings.

thank you so much. I got a generac gp5500 from a friend that was dumping it. I took it home and tried this and now it works PERFECTLY. Now i own a handy reliable genset.

I acquired a GP5500 recently that had not been run for at least three years. After cleaning the carburetor, I wasn’t confident it would be OK, so I bought a new carburetor for $24. That turned out to be a great move and it started on the second pull and ran perfectly.
I was sure that it wouldn’t produce power after that length of time but I plugged in a drill and it ran on every outlet.
Your video was helpful and now I know what to do if it ever does loose power. Thanks.

I have the same problem . It stopped producing power and would only run for a second like yours did . I checked the brushes and they were fine . Checked power to the brushes when it was running and would only have 12v momentarily which explained why it only put out power momentarily. Purchased the part on eBay for $20 here in Australia. I will find out in a week when it arrives 😊

Sad that the AVR went out with almost no run time. Unfortunately Generac's quality has taken a sharp decline over the years compared to what they built in the late 90's.

If you look to Jame's Condon his channel he does integrate work on these sort of generators and has quite a good reputation in getting of what he finds that is used to work again.

I think you need to turn the drill in the reverse direction - make sure that the reversing switch (if it has one) in in the forward direction.

This was helpful except the AVR wasn't the problem in my generator. When I opened it up, I discovered the brushes (which deliver current to the AVR) were badly worn and one of the carbon posts was broken off. Safe to say *that* is surely the problem and a replacement part is only a couple bucks.
So first *check the brushes* if it runs but no power.

First thing I checked on mine . Power was only being supplied to the brushes momentarily when it was running which explained why it only made power momentarily. Hopefully the new avr fixes my problem when it arrives off eBay

@@45diychannel79 Don’t forget about the generator safety rules: anyone who uses portable gas generators really needs to see this safety reminder. All generator safety rules should be followed carefully. This advice is just to make sure that everyone is aware of all the warnings and it’s just to remind people to be careful using portable generators. Generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. Every year, hundreds of people die or get injured when using portable generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution. Make sure you are using your generator carefully and keeping others safe as well. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Never use your generator in your porch too. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide and seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Please do not allow a child or unqualified people to operate the portable generator. Just because some manuals missed what should be listed doesn’t mean it’s safe to do. Always follow the generator safety rules when using portable generators. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Do not wear loose clothing when operating the generator. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the safety rules. th-cam.com/video/I1jT3ANENvI/w-d-xo.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. Hope this helps. Thank you.

I acquire repair and flip these generators and this line of Generac brand is on the worst there is. One had metal tank that rusted from the inside within 3 years of being new. Cleaned out the rust from the carb discarded tank and scabbed a plastic tank off a donor unit to get something usable again. These also have one of the worst carbs out there. You have to buy from them because they mask who makes their engines for them in China.

    • @raymondgarafano8604

No problem. I do think brushes style gens are better though as brushless it
means rectifiers on the rotor, so more time to take gen apart to repair rectifier bridge. brushes send power d.c. to windings on the rotor through the slip
rings. as long as there is continuity to windings, they can be flashed at times
to keep up the residual field and if anything the avr can easily be replaced if it goes bad. a gen subjected to dampness could mess up solder connections at the slip rings. starting and running gen with a good load every few months is good and NOT letting engine run out of gas with a load is very important. Also
getting a cheap capacitor for gen and not being extinguishing and mess things
up and could cause a bad fire or explosion if there are gas fumes present.
