Welcome to what is, in my humble opinion, the best run of 4 Episodes in the history of Doctor Who. If I understand your viewing/recording schedule correctly, then you have already seen part 2 of the finale, but not part 3 yet. I won't spoil anything, but once you see the ending of part 2, it should be very obvious who is behind this and gave Ashildir the bracelet to put on the Doctor.
And to answer your conjectures about Missy, she didn't want to kill Clara herself, but she wanted someone else to do it and take the blame, because she knew how triggered the Doctor would become, and that is what she wants. She wants him to become more like her, but not against her.
The overbuilding of houses was because rental of properties was based on ground area, so you got more house without paying more if you built the upper stories further out.
My favorite episode. It gave me chills.
"The Doctor is no longer here. You're stuck with me!" One of the best and scariest lines ever said by the Doctor.

Welcome to Capaldi at his absolute best.
Capaldi will always be, in my opinion, the best Doctor at delivering lines. He is a man who can speak and make everyone shudder in fear, or cry in sadness, or shout in joy.
ArlanKels Couldn’t agree more. Personally, I think he encapsulates what the Doctor should be!
He was born for this role. And I'm glad to be alive to witness him play my beloved character.
He's the master of monologue.
Of all the actors that ever layed a foot in the TARDIS Peter Capaldi will always be my favourite most genuine actor ever! How he delivers lines with such ease and grace is beyond me.
No one made me dive that deep into a character's emotion ever before.
He can literally play any character and I'm always convinced by his portrayal. Which is why I'd even go as far as saying that he's THE best actor in all of time and space.
Eric at the beginning of the episode: "I got something in my eye."
Everyone who knows this episode: "Oh honey."
On the bright side this was the perfect episode to get something out of the eye with all the crying 😭
"Your reign of terror will end at the sight of the first crying child and you know it." One of the many lines I love in this episode. Also:
Clara: "I will die and no one else here or anywhere will suffer."
The Doctor: "What about me?"
I love that too.

When the Doctor threatened Ashildr, that may have been one of the scariest moments ever in Doctor Who...

You can talk about "the fury of the Time Lord" and anything with Smith, but Capaldi and MAYBE McCoy can only do the really cold anger that makes you genuinely fear for your existence
If you remember, all the way back at Doctor #10, "The Family of Blood" and the four fates that befell the family, then your blood runs could when you see the Doctor threaten "Me". She angered him far worse than the family did.

He's such a brilliant actor, and it's lovely to see his performances appreciated this much.

That's not the question. The episode is cursed. Do you know how many reviewers/reactors had camera issues during "how many seconds in eternity"? Like, ALL of them. So many reactors had "yea, my camera died while recording this, sorry!"

I love heaven sent, like jesus fucking christ its so beautiful omg.
Her death was anticlimactic because it was the cost of her hubris.
Clara's arc has seen her taking more and more dangerous risks in the effort to be more like the doctor, and we see her succeed. She is reckless and arrogant.
They remind you of that at the beginning of this episode with her complete lack of worry for falling out of the tardis.
To be completely fair, this episode doesn't so much "remind" us of her hubris so much as dial it up to an 11 and really bash you over the head with it. If anything, every instance of Clara taking action on her own or going behind the Doctor's back has always been treated as a positive thing in the past, which it admittedly WAS, but there was never even the slight indication that she was being too reckless or taking things too far until this episode when the Doctor suddenly mentions that "it's becoming a problem".
I think if they had peppered in a conversation or three with the Doctor being concerned about her taking too many risks and Clara brushing it off it might have felt more natural for this to happen the way it did.
@@Wolf6119 I mean I completely agree with you, I really don't like Clara so I picked up on her recklessness and whatnot early on. I think that her going behind the doctors back and it being treated as a positive is one of the things that annoys me the most about this season especially considering how it ends.
Like you said they should have made more of an effort to portray this as a character flaw in the front half of the season rather than as a positive.

@@liynne She was supposed to be written out at Christmas, but she came back for one more season. They had an entire season to ~properly~ establish this character trait, and they didn't. I think that one of Moffat's biggest issues as a writer is creating and executing consistent arcs for both character and overall story, and Clara is actually an excellent example of both of these things.
@@abbymartinez8090 If i am not mistaken, Jenna is the one that want out because she didn't like Clara storyline in S08. SM take her wishes into consideration but SM and Peter still want her in Doctor Who. Thus, that is how Last Christmas plot finale do. If Jenna leave, that will be Clara end but if Jenna continue, it is just a dream. After Jenna read what SM plan to do with Clara in S09, she decided to stay.
If I had to sum up the next two episodes I would simply quote River;
"He'll rise so much higher and then fall so much further".
0saintclark0 yeah but Hell Bent gets too much hate. Had some issues but imo it’s still a great finale. Obviously Heaven Sent is amazing but tbh all of this series except for sleep no more is really strong.

The way 12 looks at Clara when he is holding her hand, you can really see how much he loves her.
I know Clara was never the most popular of companions, but for me, she was Capaldi's best companion and one of the best companions of Modern Who. I will admit, when she was properly introduced in 'The Bells of Saint John', she was didn't have that much of a personality, but from 'The Day of the Doctor' onwards, Clara slowly became one of my personal favourite companions, and the close bond/devotion she shared with 12 was very heartfelt. In fact, for me, it felt reminiscent of the legendary dynamic between Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen. Jenna Coleman was brilliant throughout and her death in this episode was beautifully portrayed with great impact. 'Face the Raven' was a great episode, but the next one's a killer. It's one hell of a bird!
Yeah she was definitely better with Capaldi than Smith, but she was always a great actor throughout!
I'd even argue that there wasn't an issue in series 7. I thought it was really cool how we see Clara through the Doctor's lens in series 7, with him viewing her only as a mystery that he needs to solve rather than a person. I think the audience sees Clara as less of a complete person because that's how the Doctor was treating her the entire time. I felt that made it more special when that veil is gone in series 8 and both the Doctor and the audience see her for who she is.
Clara and Capaldi are like Tennant and Donna. Love them. I really disliked Smith and Clara.
She’s top five all-time for me.

I know this string of episodes from Face the Raven to Hell Bent is very divisive, but it works very well for me as a whole. I don’t think it’s perfect, but they did what they could to finally and appropriately separate the Doctor from Clara after showing how reckless and codependent their relationship was becoming, and the performances from Coleman and, obviously, Capaldi sold it.
I think it would have been a lot better if at the end of Hell Bent, they actually sent Clara back to her death. I still wouldn't love it, but I think it would be a massive improvement over the spinning diner
Capaldi is probably best known in the UK (other than for playing Dr Who) as playing Malcolm Tucker in the thick of it. His character was a government whip who spoke almost exclusively in expletives and would usually threaten to kill at least 3 people every ten or so minutes. He is immensely good at making you fear him.
Prepare yourselves for potentially the show's best episode.

Whoever was behind the technical difficulties this episode should be lauded as a hero because they were trying to save you guys from the pain , especially Shane and Eric lol.
God I want them to watch clips of The Thick of It/In the Loop after this. Eric is such a fan of Capaldi as the Doctor, I'd love to see what he'd think about Malcolm Tucker.

I think this is a decent start to our three-part finale .
The initial mystery is intriguing but it’s truly the final sequence between The Doctor and Clara that elevate it .. both Jenna and Peter brought their A game as usual !!.
I do wish the idea of Clara being very reckless and trying to be like The Doctor was peppered more throughout the season but it still worked imo .
Clara was never my favorite or my least favorite companion , she was always in the middle for me but man do I love Jenna Coleman .. great actress !!.
If only it was a two part finale..

CLARA: If there was something I could do about that, I would. I guess we're both just going to have to be brave.
DOCTOR: Clara.
(They hug.)

The guy that died from the raven is, definitely, not the first actor from the classic series to appear on modern Doctor Who. I don't know for certain who the first was but, Clara's grandma was played by an actress who had appeared in classic Who. She had previously been in the 6th Doctor episode "Vengeance on Varos".
Also, the woman who played Val in "Closing Time" appeared in "The Gunfighters" (a First Doctor story) & "Enlightenment" (a Fifth Doctor story).

peter capaldi can go from screaming with pain one episode to speak softly yet with absolute rage and poison in the next. honestly one of my favorite doctors

Regardless of my mixed feelings around the whole becoming too much like the doctor will be destructive thing, that last scene before Clara dies is a work of art. It so perfectly encapsulates the morals and lessons that she has gathered from her time with the doctor and it shows how much shes grown and how much their relationship has grown. Each word drips with their history and leads to strong, beautiful conclusions. "Don't be a warrior be a doctor"
I have been waiting for your reaction to the next episode after this for SO DAMN LONG. I'M SO STOKED. It's one of my all time favorite Who episodes

Honestly Clara was never one of my favourites, they turned her into a mini Doctor, but this episode was beautiful and would have been a great end for any companion. Dying with dignity and to save someone, facing death bravely.

Missy tried to get the Doctor to kill Clara inside the Dalek casing. When he realized the truth, he barked at her to run, which she did. Also, Flatline was Season 8, one of the best present day episodes ever.

Next episode is probably the greatest episode ever written and acted.
Watching Doctor Who on its own, without the context of all the news and promotion the BBC puts out around it, is really a different experience. Before a character ever dies for good, before a Doctor regenerates, the news always tells you that the actor is leaving and who is coming in as a new actor. So the show kinda assumes you already know that kind of info going into the episodes. If you know Jenna Coleman is leaving when you watch an ep like this, it’s impactful, but if you don’t, yeah, it’s not clear what to make of it. I wish Doctor Who didn’t have to contend with a relentless news cycle and we could just be surprised once in a while.

In 'The Day of the Doctor', Kate Stewart says the Ravens need new batteries so that implies they're not the same species as the Shade we see here.
Also, I love that the Eleventh Doctor's last piece of advice to Clara on the phone in 'Deep Breath' were "don't being afraid", and her last words here were "let me be brave".

One of my top 5 favorite new era episodes ever is next. A transcendent performance by Capaldi and some of the best writing in the history of the program. I can't wait for your next video.

First time I saw this episode and I cried a bucket load, peter Capaldi didn’t show much facial expression (probably in disbelief over what’s happening) but his eyes showed all the emotion and sadness. Really enjoyed Clara and I don’t know if it’s truly the end for her but if it is, dying to some soul eating raven ain’t so bad.

25:24 Hate to say it Aaron, but there was one other original Who actors back in new Who before that guy was. Clara's grandma from Smith's final Christmas episode was in a Colin Baker era episode. Although I am not sure if there are many other returned actors

That style of architecture building out as the levels go up came from old Germany when they had a weird taxing policy where they charged for the square footage based on the ground floor square footage.

Fun fact: where i'm from in Scotland people (especially older people) will sometimes say of someone who's died that they're "away [on] the crow road" (there's a great novel by Iain Banks called "The Crow Road" featuring themes of mortality). Maybe because they're carrion birds that will eat corpses, crows and ravens have been associated with death and particularly travelling between the realm of the living and the dead for centuries.
There is a TV series about that book, and Peter Capaldi is uncle Rory.

There's a place in Amsterdam like that. Sort of like a hidden street behind the main street. It's really cool. In fact it looks sort of like the one in this episode. I wouldn't be surprised if they filmed it there.
