I love that this episode is essentially just The Doctor watching a Doctor Who episode.
Trial of a Timelord did it first
“Nardole are you secretly a bad ass?”
“Nothing secret about it baby doll”
*yelp*
Pure gold.
The TARDIS not translating the Pope in Bill’s apartment was a tell that something was up.
I thought that too but they make the mistake of translating later
Maybe Bill wasn't on TARDIS for a while, so translation effect ended.
I think it didn't translate because that other woman was there (someone who hadn't been in the Tardis).
I think it might be a little bit of each of your ideas partly because they are in a simulation, partly because the other woman was there, and maybe bill hadn’t been on the tardis enough
@@boltstudios4690 In The Christmas Invasion, there's that government guy who hears the Sycorax translated into English without ever having stepped foot in the TARDIS
I always like Missy's line "Get off! I've just been executed. Show some respect."
"He's not a killer."
"Look up the Doctor, under cause of death."
''My kill count machine broke.... That's fucked up, dude.''
jeck jeck It’s over 9000
That could just mean he *_accidentally_* caused their deaths. That's a way he could still be "not a killer".
@@TheGreater-ScopeVillain daleks can be murdered
@@The-Lone-DalekCybermen too. Them and the Daleks he'll kill almost any day he can. Daleks for obvious reasons and Cybermen as a pity. Though he sometimes flip flops on Daleks depending on the scale of killing required.
Personally, this is the most underrated story from Series 10. From time to time, we get Doctor Who stories that are like nothing we've ever seen before and, for me, Extremis was like that. It was surprising and tantalising from start to finish, and easily one of Steven Moffat's best. I know people like to bash on this episode because they think it's too Moffat-y, but I personally love the devices and tropes he uses in this episode, especially the whole simulation device. Plus, the ending/cliffhanger was perfect! - "How can I save them when I'm lost in the dark?"
Love this episode. One of Peter Capaldi's best. And Moffat's writing is stellar.
Underrated? I feel like people rave about this episode a lot, with only the finale *sometimes* placed above it.
Does anyone else get happy when they see that the crew are genuinely enjoying the episode? 🙈
Ailin Ell yeah doesn’t happen often
@Harold Tong Eh, I personally disagree. Usually the crew seems at the very least, entertained. If they _really_ didn’t like the show, they would drop it.
SpookyGhostGoku of course but I’ve noticed lately with doctor who reactions early on that they don’t really have high energy or discussions on it and get hung up on time problems that seem logical for the show. They’ll say they like something but won’t elaborate much on those thought thread and talk about unrelated topics. And I feel that in the future maybe even after this season they’ll consider dropping it. Which I might prefer to zombie reactions sometimes.
I didn't particularly care for this two-parter when I first saw it. But after seeing such a _positive_ reaction from them, as well as another channel, I think I may revisit it. But perhaps this time I'll wear a hat.
Thomas Kelly I don’t know man. I just came off of a early access to next week and honestly the discussion part for me is what really is lacking in these reviews. Not to say their other reactions aren’t great but you can see how most of them are not interested if the doctor isn’t actively jerking himself off.
"I'm doing what everyone does when the world's in danger: I'm calling the Doctor." One of my favourite lines, although I'm not entirely sure why.
One of the greatest episodes of this (or any) Dr. Who series! But I especially love the In Extremis saying: “Goodness is not goodness that seeks advantage. Good is good in the final hour, in the deepest pit, without hope, without witness, without reward. Virtue is only virtue in extremis”, and how it will be (very subtly, but with such impact) essentially “referenced” before the end of the season, if one pays close attention.
The first time I watched this, when they were in CERN and the guy asked them to choose a number, I thought, sure, I'll play along. And I said number 36 at the same time as them... I thought I was gonna shit myself until I said a different number the second time.
I said 76.
Looks like Rocco Colasanto (the happy Italian guy from "Turn Left") came out better in our universe than he did in the "Turn Right" universe... he became Pope!!!
Turns out he wasn't lying when he said those trucks were taking them to labour camps to be given "Good work"
I mean, that is an actual theory running among fans.
Wolf6120 Oh yeah!!! Never noticed that before! I must be in a simulation obv!
my favorite line: "particle physicists and priests, what could scare them both"
the world is a simulation xD
Without hope
Without witness
Without reward
Calvin is on fire for this one. The cyanide pill metaphor helps me understand something I never got the first time around. And the idea that the Doctor engineered his own presence as the execution makes so much sense.
This was a GREAT episode, in both drama and comedy (I fucking love the Pope barging into Bill's bedroom, and the followup next week). It's a shame the rest of the Monk episodes don't really live up to its standard, because if they had it would probably be one of the defining arcs of Capaldi's run.
Also, some fantastic attention to detail in one little instance; The Pope speaking Italian and needing the Cardinal to translate, instead of the TARDIS doing it automatically. Clearly the Monks hadn't QUITE worked out the details of the TARDIS in their simulation 100% lol
SPOILER
i think the last part of this story is fairly good except for the rushed ending
Wolf6120 I still like the next episode.
He’s speaking Latin isn’t he? That’s the language he’s supposed too anyway.
Jacob Hogan The church don’t actually speak to each other in Latin regularly lol, that’s just for religious services. Most of the Vatican leadership are Italian, and the current Pope is also fully fluent in Italian, despite being Argentinian
I share the same sentiment with everything you just commented on. Although thinking about it now, I still think the next episode's build up and cliff hanger is pretty stellar too, but the conclusion episode, not so much.
Don't ya just hate it when the Pope crashes your date?
Every time
Again
It does tend to put a damper on the romance.
Eric: "I feel terrible about GTA now. All those hookers...."

Amazing thumbnail !
Alright, so Extremis is (apart from the finale) my favorite episode of the season. The follow up is still good but doesnt hold to this one, imo.
The monks didnt entirely work for me in the end, despite some great ideas here and there, but as a stand-alone, I'm a huge fan of Extremis !
Extremely good episoe imo !
entirly agree!
My absolute favourite moment from this was at the end, with the Doctor being contacted by his simulated version. It's just so good, that whole moment of 'okay, I may not be real and unable to stop you, but screw that, I'm going to get the actual Doctor to fuck you up'.
I am so happy to see the crew enjoying an episode! It's not like they haven't been enjoying Doctor Who, but this is the first episode in a long while where they actually DISCUSS the episode! Raising interesting questions afterwards, like how Aaron asked them if they would kill themselves to stop this supposed demon. Lately most after their talks afterwards have been short and usually without even discussing the plot of the episode.
This makes me incredibly excited for the upcoming reactions!
The UK officially uses Metric but a large part of the population casually uses imperial out of habit. Typically older generations
Metric is the system used by computers, majority of sciences and engineering (internationally) which is why schools in the US get encouraged to adopt it.
The UK officially uses a weird, bodged together mix in fact. So we buy spirits in litres and vegetables by the kilo but beer (and milk) in pints. All kids are taught the metric system at school (and _only_ the metric system as far as i'm aware, aside from lessons on converting between systems) and science and engineering have been pretty much exclusively metric since the 80s but our speed limit signs are in miles per hour and lots of people, young and old, will still talk about e.g. people's heights in feet and inches and most distances in miles. We're a mess basically :-).
Yeah, the UK _officially_ uses metric, but road signs use miles, yards, mph. People still measure their height in either metres or feet/inches, and their weight in either kg or stones/pounds. Food labels are always metric, but generally also list energy in calories, and the sizes might correspond to exact imperial measurements, for instance 454g or 568ml for 1 pound or 1 pint.
@@TheMoonRover One of the "UK-isms" that tickles me is the stopping distances chart in the Highway Code - it lists the speeds in mph (with km/h in brackets) and then the stopping distances in metres (with feet in brackets). No wonder people from abroad think we're all bloody mad :-).
@@anonymes2884 Not to mention fuel prices in £/litre and fuel consumption in miles per gallon.
Same thing here in Canada (the only countries that use Imperial are The USA and their ex African colony Liberia. We switched in the 70’s.
When the Doctor started talking about video game characters fearing death when you shoot at them I immediately flashed back to the cartoon Reboot.
Seeing this made me realise I have to rewatch Doctor Who
is no one going to mention its really cool that they started watching steins gate recently and this is the same CERN from steins gate
Great seeing you _love_ an episode again!
Personally this gets better for me with every rewatch!
Great concept, brilliant cast & Nardole getting to show his -secret- badass side!
I thought I was tripping and thumbnails got mixed up because there was another blender video on my dashboard, plus I'm working with blender right now
That thumbnail was just perfect
I remember watching this when it first aired with an awful hangover and didn’t understand it then watched it again the next day and loved it.
The Doctor being blind is such a cool twist on the usual status of the episodes, I really like it
i love the after effects thumbnail
Re: The Doctor borrowing eye-sight. That shouldn't come back - That Doctor was in the simulation. It didn't actually happen.
I love you guys for referencing Scythe. It's such a good series
I love this thumbnail so much.
" Cause of death: The Doctor" Counter. Despite that device being able to count to infinity, it somehow still went in overflow...
Good episode imo.. the mystery and atmosphere engages you throughout .
I like the idea of an alien species that practices it’s invasions through simulation before doing so for real .
The humor is also on point as are the performances aswell !!.
Matt Lucas has an absolutely amazing BBC documentary series that's more of a mockumentary and it's called round planet....I can't seem to find it anywhere these days however if you can find it it is absolutely worth doing a reaction to you do learn stuff but the way that he does it is absolutely amazing
The Doctors kill count still going on and not stopping even as the episode ended it still hadn’t stopped is such a small but brutal detail
I kind of want to see Rachando in a future episode with that gentle whirr still going on.
About the Simulation, to keep it simple:
If intelligent life doesn't kill itself and survives long enough to create a simulated universe, our chance to be real shrinks to 1 in 2. But, if you could, why would you only simulate one ? you wouldn't. you would run like a few hundret thousands or millions of tests... 1 to x million chance to be real.
On top of that: Schrödingers Cat. As long as the box is closed, the cat is dead and alive, because the simulation doesn't need to waste power on it as long as no one looks.
The cat is a macro scale object. That means its quantum state is always decohered by its own self. The cat is dead as soon as the cat's body is dead. Shroedinger made up his cat to show how the Copenhagen interpretation was a load of BS. Not as an example of how it was right.
@@markhackett2302 someone who gets the context! You're a rare breed.
Always pisses me off the whole "the cat is both alive and dead" nonsense.
Remember back in Turn Left when Donna lived with the pope for a while?
One of the best episodes this season
Already missing Shane. Fair play to him for wanting to focus on his family.
These episodes are actually hilarious the way other eps in this series cannot be. I like it! 😹
OMG the Pope in this is that Italian guy from Turn Left. Had not noticed that first time I watched this
There is such thing as a Simulation Argument and it essentially says, that if there is an advanced enough civilization to create a simulation, then it can do it many times over. This in turn would mean that it is more likely that we are a simulation than not.
as an italian, I burst out laughing when the Pope appeared at Bill's apartment speaking Italian
One of my favorite episodes of the show, and my favorite series 10 episode!
The doctor that got his eyes back for a second was in the simulator so that won’t affect the real doctor
I finally caught up with u guys..!!!
Started in October from 1st episode of 9th doctor..😁
The first hint The TARDIS did not translate what The Pope was saying
Shane is reading Scythe! I just met the author for that series. Great books
Such a brilliant episode, the three parter is so strong even if it kind of fumbles on the third episode.
Still better than the entire Rest of the Season, i like the Idea of the Monks "beg us to rule you"
@@DasKame I would say it is better except for the finale.
I completely agree.. This 3 parter s the only reason I even rate series 10 as good.. This is a very average series in general. The last 2 episodes are alright, good episodes..
@@cricketcsk03 the last two episodes of series 10 are all time greats

If you create a simulation of The Doctor, expect them to defeat you.
This episode just make me want them to watch steins;gate even more
When I first watched this episode, I didn't realize they caught on that the simulation was being used to take over the real world, just that the simulation was a simulation. So I thought they just killed themselves because they couldn't live with the idea that they weren't real, not that they were removing themselves as data that could be used against the real world.
In Britain, imperial and metric are used pretty much interchangeably
Feet and Inches are annoying for me. I am from England and all through school I was taught in Millimeters and Centimeters but 30 years before me in this country we still used the old system of Feet and Inches. The problem is there is still generations of people taught in a different measuring system and some work places still work under those rules because the people in charge are from an older generation. Over the summer I worked in a wood yard and customers would come in and ask for planks of wood or what ever in Feet and Inches. I wouldn't have a clue what that was so I had to get someone to help me and it just made me feel stupid. He was trying to teach me but it was hard to get into my head and hard to work out on the fly since I am bad at maths as it is. Glad I don't work there anymore.
Some info on simulation theory if you're interested:
One way I've seen simulation theory argued is this: Imagine some super advanced alien civilization (or ancient humans that were super advanced) that decides to simulate a universe with some sort of super advanced computer. If they let their simulation run long enough, the beings in that simulation might get the same idea and make their own simulation, and so on and so on. With that idea in mind, it is MUCH more likely that WE are in one of the potentially infinitely-many nested simulations. After all, there is only one original universe and a bunch more simulated ones.
That is not necessarily science, just a logical argument inspired by the following actual science:
Simulation theory, as far as I can tell, is inspired by an actual scientific principle called the "Holographic Principle." The idea is that, if we look at the surface of a black hole (the event horizon), we run into LOTS of issues. The biggest one is the fact that, if black holes truly never die and thus never re-release their material back out into the universe, then they violate conservation of information. Quantum mechanics, among other things, tells us that information about the states of particles (or anything) must always be conserved. You must always be able to, at least in theory, take some amount of information and determine the previous state of that information. Now you see the issue: if stuff falls into a black hole and is forever cut off from the external universe, that is a massive loss of information. Black holes are only characterized by three things: their electric charge, their angular momentum (spinning), and their mass. Any other information about the stuff that falls in is lost at the event horizon.
Now, finally, the holographic principle. One idea to solve this black hole "information paradox" is to consider the surface of the black hole. You can do some math and determine that all of the information that falls into the black hole is actually preserved on the surface of the black hole, which itself is a 2-dimensional surface in 3-d space. Thus, it's almost like the 2-d information on the surface is "projected" into the center to create a 3-d image.
In that way, one could argue that the entire universe might only be a 3-d looking PROJECTION, projected by information on some very, VERY far away 2-d surface.
That's all a very simplified explanation of it, but I hope it makes some sort of sense to you. Basically, the illusion of 3-d space (illusion might be the wrong word: it's identical) can be generated by a projection of information on a distant 2-d surface. Once you consider that, it's a hop skip and a jump to thinking that we live in an actual projected simulation.
We don’t know that there is just one universe though.
@@jacobhogan3208 We don't have evidence for other universes, so for all intents and purposes there is only one. Or at least, we live our lives assuming there is only one.
We don’t have any real hard evidence contradicting it either, so you can’t really use that viewpoint.
@@jacobhogan3208 That's not how it works. The claim is that there might be a multiverse. There is no evidence. So we reject the claim and keep investigating, for now.
Simulation Theory is a bit tricky to grasp, but it essentially goes like this:
With how quickly technology is advancing, it is predicted that, eventually, humans will be able to create simulated worlds just as advanced and complex as our own, with simulated people just as advanced and complex as ourselves. We’ll essentially be able to create life!
At which point, those worlds we create would go on to grow and create perfectly simulated worlds of their own, which in-turn would grow and go on to create perfectly simulated worlds of _their_ own, which in-turn would-
You get the idea.
The Theory is that, if there is only _one_ “real world” and an infinite amount of perfectly simulated “fake worlds” spawning from it, then the chances of us being that ‘one in infinity’ are pretty slim at _best._
If you believe in statistics, then _technically_ you should also believe that this universe is just one massive simulation.
The monk trilogy is rough but extremis is amazing!
0:12 xD
I don't know why I loved how capaldi said EMAIL, sounds very 60 year old somehow
18 years ago Calvin? really that long ago?? ;) ;)
"It says height but it does it in meters, it says weight but it does it in pounds."
Oh trust me, that's not the Doctor's glasses being weird, that's just the British measuring system being a complete fucking mess. Where America uses Imperial and Europe uses Metric, Britain is stuck in some weird in-between purgatory of measurement after they kinda tried to switch to metric in the 70s but half-assed the implementation.
Bathroom and kitchen scales weigh people or food in pounds by default, but doctors will measure you in kilograms. Clothes sizes, height, and furniture are measured in metric units, but if you're giving someone directions or talking about the distance between places, it's basically always feet and miles, and speed limits on signs are in miles per hour too. Gasoline is sold by the liter but drinks by the ounce.
As a non-Brit currently living the UK, I can confirm, it's sometimes absolutely maddening trying to guess which one you're supposed to use for what lol.
Thanks, Eric! Thanks, Shane! Thanks, Calvin! Thanks, Aaron! ⏳
No one expects the Spanish inquisition
Why Spanish? This is set in the Vatican City with Italians and British people.
(The Spanish Inquisition took place in Spain, that’s why it’s called that.)
Jacob Hogan it’s a reference to Monty Python. It’s a joke
I live in the UK and I use feet for height way more than metres...but then again I'm absolutely shocking at guessing distance whether I know them or not 😂
Shaq made a movie called cousin and Sinbad made a movie called Shazam that does not exist and he never made... Yet they made a scene from the movie to mess with the people who believe the movie existed like me who watched it all the time as a kid and it's literally the scene from the original movie
This arc is clunky as hell and rough in spots, but I can't help but love it.
The idea is brilliant, the actual writing is rough. I didn't really like the speech about how video game characters feel it, it's a terrible and forced analogy. We already understood the concept, they just tacked on this weird idea that characters in our video games know.
It's not a weird idea, they do know. They just don't know the same way we do, what Mario in Super Mario knows is he's supposed to go right when you press right on the controller, the same way we know to react when you touch a hot stove or something. The enemies move left to right and right to left because they've been programmed to do so, essentially *thinking* they should move left to right and right to left.
We definitely do use feet in the UK, aswell as metres.
I'm sad they skipped and didn't mention the line about being good
TO THE DYNAMITE ROOM!
If you're in a simulation and you realize you're in a simulation you can learn how to hack the simulation and get whatever you want in addition to speeding up time to where you can become super intelligent know all things within a few seconds and even learn how to affect the world outside
I went to middle school and high school in North Canton. I learned both imperial and metric. It’s not that hard.
Still wanting to see nardol cosplay lol. probably wont happen but I can hope
I’m really looking forward to episode eight reaction. If you’ve seen the episode you know what I’m talking about. It was pretty pointless and stupid, but it’s great for reactions. Also, just a few weeks ago till we get to episode 11!!!
Leave it to *Blind Wave* to watch _Doctor Who_ with their eyes (a pair each, held inside their heads with their faces, peeking out at the screen). Them and their _head eyes._
Your first clue that something is off is that the tardis didn't translate the pope
Great 3Parter, the best Episodes of the Season, i really liked the Monks
It's just the UK, don't flatter yourselves. They use both systems but older people used to metrics. Everyone else in Europe and most of the other countries use the metric system. Cause it MAKES SENSE!
Nice thumbnail
Does the Tardis not translate Italian?
Supposedly it’s meant to hint it’s a simulation, and also he should be speaking Latin.
Who didnt crop the thumbnail hmmm?
That’s the point though
so no one gonna talk about the messed up thumbnail?
Can't watch the next episode in Germany
Good video

Hey, if anyone's interested, I'm reviewing all the Doctor Who stories on my channel, with me just having upload my review of: 'Frontier In Space (1973)!' No pressure, of-course; Just if you're interested! (Yes, I'm planning to do Big-Finish! :)
To be honest it hella annoyed me that mummies made Pope's English so lackluster. Like come on - for last decades we had literal polyglots, and with English being so popular language nowadays - it's obvious it will be the main language Pope have to know in the best way possible, and the actor looks as if he doesn't even understand what he is talking about.
Other than that - I still feel like this should have been double episode and not trilogy - like whole finale and most story for Bill was so trashy. Villains also were pretty lackluster comparing to the concept Extremis was giving us. Like after watching this episode I was really hyped about them, and then they were just soo mediocre...
The actor understands English, and a few things.
1: The most spoken is Mandarin
2: The Pope lives in Vatican City,
a country since the 20’s that speaks mostly Latin.
3: The Pope only usually speaks Latin and has to be translated.
.
4: The Vatican is bordered on all sides by the country of Italy so it should be Italian if anything along with the country he was born into’s Language.
@@jacobhogan3208 1. Doesnt matter when most people speaking Mandarin are native speakers who dont leave China in their whole life. English is the most wide-spread language used by non-native speakers.
2. Pope is talking to British girl and to alien that is known for his British Police Box. On top of that Tardis should have translated it to English either way.
3. Not really. Especially when being outside Vatican City, last few Popes always tried to speak the language of the people.
4. It should be English, cause Tardis translates everything, usually not even leaving the accent.
I mean I know the actor and some of his other roles, it doesnt change a fact that Monks should have done it better and the character of the Pope should have been written way better.
Whats calvin’s ig?
This may not be the right video, but I'm just gonna say that their review of Rise of Skywalker might be the most controversial video on their channel. Even if they like it or don't, it's gonna be interesting
Nice thumbnail lol
23:45 I mean he lost his pee-pee...
Scythe is amazing and at the point of this the third book's already out and it was amazing as well.
There is also a movie coming out of it apparently
Wtf is the thumbnail
Il like this arc, but it's just too long. A 3 parter was not a good idea. It takes a slot in a short season for another potential story.
Well, it's not like they didn't do worse for Series 9? As great as the episodes are, it's packed with two parters, a three parter and at least three single part episodes. Series 10 is much more tame compared to 9.
Common core is trash and did nothing but confuse the shit out of kids. The goal wasn’t to help kids that performed worse in school, it was to lower the grades of kids that performed better to even them out.
