    I love how this episode and the previous one are so up close and personal. Don't get me wrong, the Doctor facing off armed soldiers and Rassilon at the begining is cool, but damn I could watch Twelve and Clara talking and looking at each other forever.

    The soldiers joining The Doctor because they knew him during the Time War was such a cool moment I wish it was expanded on more.

    • @Wolf6119
      @Wolf6119 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Yeah, it's a cool idea on paper, but I've always felt that they really muddle the whole "Gallifrey rises up against Rassilon in support of the Doctor". For one thing, they just kinda show us like 8 dudes and a few ships showing up to reinforce the Doctor, and I guess we're left to assume the entire rest of the armed forces also backed him up, but it would have been nice to have that confirmed a bit more decisively.
      Most of all, though, I just hate how much of a wuss Rassilon is in this scenario. He tells them to kill the Doctor, they don't, then they tell him to fuck off and he just kinda goes "Aww... Okay." and, I guess, just wanders the Hell off into space. He doesn't try to negotiate once he's put at a disadvantage, doesn't try anything clever, just kinda accepts defeat and bails out cause the plot didn't need him any more. (I know there's an audio story or book that covers what happened to him afterwards, but that doesn't make up for the way he was just dumped from the plot entirely in the show itself).
      Yeah you could maybe chalk it up to Rassilon just going through a particularly pathetic regeneration, and that he doesn't quite have the strength and energy of some of his former faces, but it still seems like a pretty sad waste of a classic legacy character, who has always been a compelling antagonist in the past.

      @@anonymes2884 Yes, it's beautiful. I don't know if it's the writing or acting (prob a combination of both), but I feel like you never really got that sort of subtlety or subtext with RTD. Moffat can be just as bombastic and over-the-top, but I think he's so much better when it comes to the quieter, more nuanced moments. 12 and Clara's relationship just seemed more complex and interesting than 9/10/11 with Rose/Martha/Donna/Amy...though I'm sure there are hordes of people out there just itching to disagree! :-)

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@iancossey105 True enough, in film and TV it's almost always a combination of things, really great moments need everything to align ("Heaven Sent" is a perfect example of that in fact, where writing, acting, set design, score, even editing all come together to make something greater than the sum of its parts). And I broadly agree about Moffat. His writing feels to me to have more layers to peel back, more substance (and he clearly _loves_ time-travel stories, which also fits my tastes).
      I do like RTD's run too though (never really been an either/or sort - i've always liked "Star Trek" _and_ "Star Wars" for instance ;), it's just that they have different styles.

    • @shauntempley9757
      @shauntempley9757 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. We saw with the Doctor what happens. She thinks she gets a long time like the Doctor. She actually gets one trip, then boom Gallifrey arrival. Just as the Doctor did. He got one trip after landing on Trenzalore the first time, then the 50th, then the return journey to Trenzalore. Also, all the other TARDISes all retreat to Gallifrey when temporal trouble occurs. Clara is temporal trouble, so her TARDIS will flee back to Gallifrey once it learns of the issue. Only the Doctor's TARDIS runs to trouble.

      You also watched 11's last season, so how many episodes between Trenzalore visits? Exactly one episode, The Day Of The Doctor.
      If the Doctor cannot change that rule, what chance does Clara have?
      Her next trip is straight to Gallifrey. This diner stop of hers is the only stop she gets.

    • @Jim_The_Fish
      @Jim_The_Fish 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@shauntempley9757 That rule was never established. You’re only talking about correlation. Matt Smith only had one episode left because of timing, and Moffat wanted to wrap up his story with a huge bow. What about the TARDIS’s nature ever suggested this? And Clara is in a completely different TARDIS. She literally said “the long way round”. And the Doctor had two heartbeats, while Clara didn’t have any. Idk where you’re getting all this misinformation or if you’re just making it up, but that’s some serious reaching.

If you missed out on why they were so close, that again is on you and to blame the writers is a cop out, because other people got it. If you find confident females abrasive again that is on you. She felt flat for you? That is what people call an opinion and the good thing is, that you are allowed yours. But you coming on here, is in no way going to change my mind, so now that you have stated your opinion and I have given it's due. You can move on with your opinion and my opinion both in tact. @@Zomdra but let's discuss some of the other comments. I get why Rose loves the Doctor so much, she was a 19 year old spinning her wheels when first a crazy uncle drops out of the sky and then he turns into a handsome dashing sword fighting man who loses a hand and still wins a fight to save the Earth, but why did 10 like her so much? She dated Micky for half the season, but at the end he was so sad he cried into a wall. Martha who was working on being a Doctor was kissed by him on the moon and yet she fell deeply into love with him, even though she did just as much figuring things out on the moon that the Doctor did? Donna and 10, she left him because she watched him commit genocide, but now it is all cool because she was bored? We pick and choose what we wish to buy into in a show in which a person can change their face and they travel anywhere in time and space in a blue box.

Also I don't know where you're getting this sexism angle from in my criticisms, just the fact that she's a confident woman isn't the reason I don't like her (for what it's worth, I am a woman FYI). Oh and that last crack about Victorian women...really now, I know what you're trying to say with that but a) Victorian-Clara wasn't the docile, subservient type of person you're implying and b) I actually said I like Oswin the most.

    I'm glad you guys liked this episode as much as I did! A great sendoff to Clara, and if you look back at everything we've had this season a lot finally makes perfect sense, quietly building up through small interactions the conflict that would be the Doctor dealing with her gone and to what lengths he would go for her, as well as Clara going HARD on what her character is supposed to be and letting us know what she treasures the most; her adventures. She doesn't care at all if she dies, but her memories of all she's done are a different thing, and she won't give them up without a fight. In a way this was also her choice during Face the Raven where she did something stupid that got her killed, but trying to change that would be to change Clara herself, and that's a line the Doctor is crossing here.
    ALSO a bunch of badass moments early on in Gallifrey, where Capaldi really just flexes on everybody during these dramatic scenes. He's the best.
    Thanks for these reactions, excited for the next couple of specials!

    Peter Capaldi always wanted his Doctor to have that obsessive nature that characterised the protagonists in the German Expressionist school movies. So, for me, this finale actually fits the characterisation of the 12th Doctor perfectly especially when it comes to the narrative of the 12th Doctor Clara's relationship, Capaldi and Coleman in interviews stated that the relationship is deep romantic love & indescribable bond so it only makes sense that the doctor will never give up on getting Clara back even if it means breaking all the rules that he adhered to before, to the point that he would be tortured for 4 and half billion years, kill someone, and fracture all of time and space when it comes to Clara. My doctor and my companion that I cannot thank Capaldi and Coleman enough for my favourite era in Doctor Who.

I personally quite enjoy the idea that Clara becomes so much like the Doctor that it kills her and shows that a human can't be him quite like Donna in Journey's end and John Smith in the Family of Blood. It also robs the emotional weight that Heaven Sent has for me because he spends the entire episode grieving for someone, which we've never seen him do before if i'm not mistaken, just for it to be undone the next episode.

      @@selenkocali7025 I'd say from the moments leading up to her death until the end of Hell Bent he's going through a version of the 5 stages of grief. Denial in his disbelief over how she'd do something so stupid and wanting Me to fix it even though he knows that she can't. Anger in his threats to Me and the entire street/ when he first arrives in the confession dial. Bargaining by trading 4.5 billion years of his life (even though he doesn't actually age through then he does live and die trillions of times and he knows it) for the chance to maybe get her back, depression to a lesser extent when he gets mind wiped and knows he's losing her/ when he's in the diner talking about how much she meant to him and acceptance when he sees her picture on the TARDIS and realises that he's just been talking to her but doesn't go after her. It's obviously not a process of grieving her death necessarily but he's grieving the loss of someone who he went out of his way to seek out all those years ago. This ending does have a certain poetry to it, but it undermines the idea that people can't be the Doctor and instead rewards her for it with infinte life and a time ship to do with as she pleases, which does ruin it slightly for me.

    *Jenna Coleman and Clara's accomplishments on this show (Series 10 spoilers):*
    *1)* 38 episodes of _Doctor Who_ in total, from 2012 to her final appearance in 2017, making her the longest-running modern companion, and in terms of duration as a series lead potentially the longest-running companion period.
    *2)* She’s appeared in four Christmas specials - _The Snowmen, The Time of the Doctor, Last Christmas, and Twice Upon A Time._
    *3)* She’s featured in stories with every single Doctor to date, including Thirteen (due to _The Name of the Doctor, The Day of the Doctor,_ and _Twice Upon A Time_), and has worked directly opposite four different Doctors (Eleven, Ten, War, Twelve).
    *4)* She’s appeared in two regeneration stories - technically four if you count One' and War's regenerations.
    *5)* She appeared for the 50th anniversary, the return of Gallifrey, and the introduction of the first female Doctor.
    *6)* Clara met the Doctor as a child, helped them choose their TARDIS, changed their mind about destroying Gallifrey, and got them a new regeneration cycle.
    *7)* Got her own TARDIS and companion.
    *8)* She attended the Doctor Who Proms celebration with Matt in 2013 and the Doctor Who world tour with Peter in 2014, among many other big events for the show.
    *9)* She’s technically the first woman to have top billing for a _Doctor Who_ story and her face in the titles, thanks to Series 8's _Death In Heaven,_ where Clara claimed to actually be the Doctor.
    *10)* Her cameo in _Twice Upon a Time_ was the last thing Steven Moffat ever filmed for the show.

    The doctor actually does watch the show. He is fourth wall aware, it just doesn’t come up very often. - The original Holiday special (the seventh part of “the daleks master plan”) ends with the first Doctor turning to the camera and saying “Oh, and incidentally, a happy Christmas to all of you at home." showing that he’s very clearly aware that he is a fictional character on a tv show. The 12th doctor speaks directly to the camera even though there’s nobody there when describing the bootstrap paradox in “before the. Flood”. And he says he’s nothing without an audience while looking at the camera in “heaven sent”. And, of course, the most obvious example: The TARDIS translation circuit works through the fourth wall on members of the audience, which is why you hear the dialogue in English.
    If you think about it, it does sort of make sense. The perspective of the audience is the perspective of an entity beyond time. We can flip through the doctors timeline at a whim, go from the 12th back to watching the 1st or the 3rd, and even if their universe was retroactively destroyed we would be fine in the “real world”. - And the timelords, with their time-senses, would be capable of perceiving such entities.
    The audience likely exists somewhere in Calabi-Yau Space with the Eternals, Chronovores, and Guardians of Time. Our existence godlike even relative to the Gallifreyans, which is why we were immune to the time war. The doctor likely doesn’t try to fight us because he knows we’re harmless or even benevolent observers, that won’t interfere in events. Kinda like Uatu the Watcher.
    Actually, it might go even further than that, if we speculate that the audience represents a pre-existing entity in Calabi-Yau Space. We could be the Guardians of Time. - Hear me out, the Guardians of Time rarely appear in Doctor Who, but the one time they did they made the Doctor the Champion of Time, a role with vaguely defined powers, then pissed off never to be heard from again. Yet they’re presumably still watching their chosen champion fight, may have even played a role in why he was able to win the time war.
    So they’re extra-dimensional largely unseen entities with power over time that watch the Doctor while viewing him as a champion or even... a protagonist, and ensure that he wins.
    _Why_ does the doctor always win? Because he’s the star of the show, because audience members LIKE watching him win, because the guardians of time have chosen him to be their champion, to fight on their behalf, on the half of their entire species.
    The Doctor has the power of Plot Armor because he is a fictional character, granted to him in-universe by an audience stand in, and his time-senses show him that he is being watched by time-entities even if he doesn’t have any power in our world to stop us, which is why he is so nonchalant when he does decide to address us.
    At least that’s my head canon. But I’m just a big dumb idiot without a time-head so what do I know?

    I admit to not being enamored with this episode when it first aired, and while I have rewatched Heaven Sent many, many times, I can't have seen Hell Bent more than twice. It still has problems but for, especially the ending and Clara's death being reversed, but hot damn that pre-titles scene was so good. And as always, watching episodes with you guys always make me appreciate the lackluster episodes more, so thanks.

      And goddamn, the individual lines and exchanges, their deliveries by cast but especially Peter Capaldi, were fantastic. I just wish the whole wasn't less than the sum of its parts.

    frankly I think her death in Face the Raven was so well executed sine her story-line was mostly along the lines of trying to BECOME the Doctor and her hubris getting her killed at the end
    and while I don't dislike this ending for her I at least want her to NOT become the Doctor at the end, she was rewarded for trying to be like the Doctor or maybe just see her return to her death and accept that her hubris was her undoing

    I like the idea that the hybrid is just the doctor whenever he gets to close to someone. He got way to close with Clara so he was forced to forget her because he was breaking all his rules just to save her. It shows that being as powerful as the doctor can be a curse because if you ever get to close to someone how do you stop youself from breaking reality just to save them?

    One of the biggest criticism's of Moffatt's era is his constant rug pulls and then flip turning and making everything okay again. I think this is why Face the Raven doesn't work for some people, as Moffatt fakes out so much you expect her to be saved and it kills the tension in it. Similarly, it's why some people hate Hell Bent, as it does exactly that: retroactively lessens the impact of what was seemingly a final death.
    I do understand and somewhat agree with this criticism, and I say this as someone that really likes Clara and Smith/Capaldi.
