@@ATPokemon I was about to tell them that - especially considering we are running out of new episodes - this would be a cool thing to see for them with Husbands still being fresh.
The one thing I will always love about this episode is the ending; the words “and they both lived happily ever after”, but then the “ever after” dissolves, because it wasn’t ever after, only 24 years. And then the “and they both lived” dissolves, because they didn’t both live. But the one word, “happily” remains, because they were happy, and that’s what counts.
You're both right: 24 years may not be forever but since they are both Time Travellers, they can pop in and out whenever and wherever they like. They can have numerous adventures altogether. For them, time is just a timey-wimey wibbly-wobbly thing.
For River, it's before the library but after The Angels Take Manhattan where she's just become a professor. The stuff about the doorstep and the suit Aaron mentioned was said in the library. "Funny thing is, this means you've always known how I was going to die. All the time we've been together, you knew I was coming here. The last time I saw you, the real you - the future you, I mean - you turned up on my doorstep, with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Darillium to see the singing towers. Oh, what a night that was! The towers sang and you cried. You wouldn't tell me why, but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the Library. You even gave me your screwdriver; that should've been a clue."
Definitely. The only way to top it would have been if he had said "Penny in the air......and the penny falls." and then "Hello Sweetie." The penny line would be a call back to River's earliest adventure with The Doctor from her perspective (Let's Kill Hitler), and it was the line she would always say when people didn't catch on to things, including the fact that the Doctor didn't recognize _her_ because her face was different. It would be the perfect mirror.
When he points Rivers new screwdriver at her head and activates it he is linking the neural relay inside it to her brain. Amazing attention to detail from the library 2 parter

The cycle has been finished - only blank spots between episodes are what left to fill unfortunately. Unless Jodie takes River from the Library or Doctor decides to do that trick River did to all his incarnation before Tennant (in audio novels).
The guy at the restaurant actually goes through River's diary in this episode and confirms that River came into this episode directly from the events of Angels Take Manhattan. So River's timeline is basically. 1 - Escaping the Silence and turning into Mels 2 - Growing up with Amy/Rory and turning into River 3 - Being arrested for murdering the Doctor, but escaping to help him with adventures 4 - Being released from prison and becoming a professor 5 - Watching her parents "die" in New York 6 - Her final date with the 12th Doctor 7 - Dying at the Library after meeting the 10th Doctor, but he uploads her minds to the library computer 8 - In "Name of the Doctor" the 11th Doctor encounters the digital consciousness of River on Trenzolore.

It isn't because of her story with 11, it's because her story with 12. I never felt like she was isolating a specific incarnation of the Doctor insofar as the general concept of the Doctor she had shared experience with. River had been married to the Doctor for most of her life. So it was obviously surreal to interact with a version of him that straight up doesn't recognize her. Although also, yeah ... after 24 years on that one planet, the River of "Silence in the Library" most likely primarily envisioned Peter Capaldi as the Doctor even though her formative years and the vast majority of her adventures were in the Matt Smith era
Man, I remember this episode being good but I forgot just how consistently solid it is from beginning to end. Definitely a solid contender for top ranking among the Christmas specials. Not *quite* as optimistic about the next one, but it's still kinda fun lol
Or at least watch a video like th-cam.com/video/t-wgLFj6bbI/w-d-xo.html that has River's death in The Library intercut with "flashbacks" from later episodes.
Such a great christmas episode surprised Aaron didn't mention this was his and Mel's first Doctor Who reaction on the channel. But anyway see you next week for a Christmas special lol
I have actually done that when I was sick and in bed for a couple days. In my opinion it holds up very well with the exception of 5x12. I can rationalize River's reaction to seeing Rory for the "first time" as her acting for his benefit, but her behavior when she's alone in Amy's house in that episode doesn't make much sense after learning in 6x08 that she spent a ton of time there as a kid. Those couple scenes aside, her timeline is incredible to watch.
Nobody ever realises that Nardole was from a show called Little Britain that was narrated by Tom Baker and was very popular at the time. He is quite well known in the UK and abroad.
Future River stories can still involve River sneaking out in the TARDIS during the 24 year night. She would then be "allowed" to know about post-Capaldi Doctors. Future Doctors may have a weary/incredulous/tortured reaction to seeing her again since there have been soooo many goodbyes.
Eric as soon as he sees the new sonic: "what does this side do?" Aaron: (don't say pen, don't say pen) "ughhh...." It's also weird that this time next year (hopefully) these guys are gonna be caught up
(Calvin, love the shirt !) And we're on a row. Three great episodes in. Quite funny, in retrospect, to hear their thoughts on Nardole's apparent fate (around the 18' mark). And also, the trowel is more of a reference to River being an archeologist than to Rory's dad having a trowel in one episode I'd say. :) Oh, and the Doctor finally getting his "bigger on the inside" moment is an instant-classic for me !
Love seeing Americans react to actors/comedians that are so well known over here like Greg Davies and Matt Lucas. My childhood wouldn’t have been the same without Little Britain.
@@xRiizo The only way we could get more of her would be if the Doctor went back to the Library and found a way to save her consciousness from the computer terminal. Otherwise, the timeline wouldn't match up. It's not completely impossible though - we've already seen her post!death once, in The Name of the Doctor. It could happen again.
I hope they bring Capaldi and River Song back for some specials. Show us some of their adventures in the 24 years! Capaldi was “her” Doctor but we only got one episode. It’s something significant!
This is my favorite Christmas special but impossible to show to newcomers! It's amazing how well the River storyline was concluded. Watching Silence in the Library right after this is so great; you see so many callbacks in the script. The first time you watch Silence in the Library, you're seeing it from the Doctor's perspective. The second time, it's from River's. You the viewer see this super young Doctor and you have so much knowledge about his future life.
First -- That whole scene of River & Twelve entering the Tardis: it's almost like Peter Capaldi is playing the Fourth Doctor. I could easily see Tom Baker doing the scene. Second -- I realize technically this is the last River Song story from the viewers' perspective. But with a Tardis and a 24-year night, who's to say that the Doctor and River couldn't run off and have adventures, then return a second later? Her 24 years might be more like 48 that way. Big Finish, take note. The only complaint I have with the special is that we couldn't have more River and Twelve episodes. Their chemistry was amazing.
Aaron got a bit mixed up. The thing with Byzantium was just after Wedding of River Song when Amy thought 11 was dead. River says she just climbed out of the Byzantium to Amy so Amy knew when in the timeline she was. What was mentioned in this episode was the waiter reading River's diary and saying she just been at Manhattan, aka when Amy and Rory left 11.
Good episode imo . The interactions between River and Twelve are the highlight of the episode which culminates in a beautiful ending . I’m not as high on the next Christmas special but I’m very interested to hear their thoughts on Series 10.
In regards to the trowel. I always just figured it was because River is an archaeologist, and it is a tool archaeologists use. Though it could also be a nod to Rory's dad, as well.
If we go only by when they have adventures together it is this. Let’s Kill Hitler -> The Wedding of River Song -> A Good Man Goes to War -> The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang -> The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon -> The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone -> The Angels Take Manhattan -> The Husbands of River Song -> Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead -> The Name of the Doctor
After this episode River goes to the library and "dies", but we've seen a river from after then. River in The Name of the Doctor was from AFTER the library from her point of view, she mentions that she was saved to the library computer.
A really great lighthearted Christmas special, and so is the next one. Nardole is another one of my favorite companions. Flemming had a nice design too.
I'm so happy that you guys got to this episode!!! I've been waiting for so long!!! And your reaction to it is just as I expected... AMAZING!!!! Especially your reactions to the guy opening up his head... those effects were quite amazing also.
What I love about this episode is that the first half is pure Christmas-y farce and then it kicks into high gear and becomes pure emotion right until the end. You get the best of both worlds.
14:25 -- it's the first story we see her in (Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead with 10 and Donna), just before she dies and is uploaded into the Library.
I loved this episode. It was a huge payoff to finally see the singing towers after watching River's first episode years earlier. I remember as a little kid watching "Silence in the Library" for the first time asking my older sister if we would ever get an episode where we saw River and the Doctor at the singing towers. She said "no" but then I got to laugh at her when this finally aired.
As others have said - this takes place just before the library, when The Doctor first meets River, and the sonic he gives her is the one that saves, or "saves" her. "Oh, I'm very good!" - sorry, didn't watch to the end. I see you covered that.
Lol. '8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown', 'QI', 'The Inbetweeners'. Where do these Americans watch these standard British shows? What channel? I know it's a smaller world nowadays...streaming etc., but I find it funny hearing them talk about quintessentially British stuff that I grew up with.
I struggled to enjoy seasons 5-7 with so many loose ends esp Rivers last date not shown. But Heaven, Hell and especially this - I felt like S Moffat gifted me everything I desperately wanted and more, I forgave Steven and this era became my favourite of all time. Love the Twelfth Doctor
I really really love this episode. It seems to be one that I consistently come back to for rewatches. It works really well with The Return Of Doctor Mysterio as well. I love the little references and tie ins even though the episodes are a year apart, and what an empty year that was.
So River travels to a location specifically because she thinks she will find the Doctor there, and there she meets an eccentric man who clearly knows her, knows the Tardis, and even calls himself the Doctor.. and doesn't recognise him? Then she gives a speech about how he doesn't love anyone and wouldn't be 'stupid enough or sentimental enough' to put himself in danger for the people he loves - what Doctor has she known the last 200 years? I like Greg Davies and the trowel, but overall this feels like one of those episodes where Steven Moffat trashes his own previous writing for the sake of some callbacks and bad jokes.
Greg Davies is a great stand up comedian, comedy actor and writer. He shines on UK panel shows like Would I Lie To You. He tells a great story. He is also the Taskmaster on the show of the same name which is worth checking out if you can find it. His stand up show “You Magnificent Beast” is brilliant - it’s on Netflix I think.
This episode closes Rivers time line. the first time we see her is "Silence in the Library" David Tennent was the doctor, "Forest of the Dead" is the episode where she "Died" after telling the Doctor about the new suit and haircut and oh yeah his NAME.
YESS! Commenting here before I even watch the video but I know it's going to be good! This is one of the best specials in my opinion. I hope they still some how manage to bring her back in the future one way or another since she was such a great character! I hope they reliase when watching that it's all come full circle. It would be amazing if they watched the Silence in the Library two parter again having knowing what they do now.
Also I do love this episode because it's once towards the end of their relationship where they actually know who the other is and know their relationship together...
Just because a day here is 24 years there, it doesn't mean a year there would be long. A year there could be shorter than a day. It depends on the rotational movement and the translational movement of the planet.

"4 billion years bangin' rock. 24 years bangin' River."
Eric, that's fast 😁
I'm glad Eric pointed out that line about The Doctor laughing after so long, it's just how wonderful River is.
You guys should definitely watch the 2 part library episodes now that rivers story has finished to see her story has come full circle.
Now, re-watch all of Rivers episodes from HER chronological pov. Someone get the flowchart out!
The Doctor pretending to react to the TARDIS is one Capaldi's finest moments!
Future River stories can still involve River sneaking out in the TARDIS during the 24 year night. She would then be "allowed" to know about post-Capaldi Doctors. Future Doctors may have a weary/incredulous/tortured reaction to seeing her again since there have been soooo many goodbyes.
Eric as soon as he sees the new sonic: "what does this side do?"
Aaron: (don't say pen, don't say pen) "ughhh...."
It's also weird that this time next year (hopefully) these guys are gonna be caught up
Gonna be caught up by February right?
@@ashlmtl if there's no special this year and series 12 doesn't start up before that
There should be another new years special (unless Chibnail will abandon that sacrilegious thing and do a proper Christmas special).
(Calvin, love the shirt !)
And we're on a row. Three great episodes in.
Quite funny, in retrospect, to hear their thoughts on Nardole's apparent fate (around the 18' mark).
And also, the trowel is more of a reference to River being an archeologist than to Rory's dad having a trowel in one episode I'd say. :)
Oh, and the Doctor finally getting his "bigger on the inside" moment is an instant-classic for me !
I liked Nardole shame he was a one episode character
Uhh.... did you see season 10?
@@haydenravenscroft1803 R/woosh
One episode ? '-'

@MarvelDC girl 1255643 2354 irony input does not compute. system fail. ERROR ERROR ERROR!
Love seeing Americans react to actors/comedians that are so well known over here like Greg Davies and Matt Lucas. My childhood wouldn’t have been the same without Little Britain.
Kylie they don't recognise, but Greg Davies? Sure.
Must be a american thing
Omg I just realised why rivers got a sonic trowel! She was inspired by her Grand father, Brian Williams
Watching the Silence in the Library again after this episode is just really really painful.
Everything has come full circle now.
IKR! It's so sad to watch since she is still my fav companion! Sad to see her "go". But maybe we might get more River in the future.
River is such a well written and amazing character
this is the story river was talking about in forest of the dead.
The Big Finish outro music was a nice touch, good work Lono!
Greg Davies, on Graham Norton, breaks Ryan Gosling and Jodie Foster, you have to watch
She says about the haircut and new suit just before she dies in the library 14:50
10:00 I see Aaron wiping those tears! That is the best "Hello, sweetie!" in the series.
Good episode imo .
The interactions between River and Twelve are the highlight of the episode which culminates in a beautiful ending .
I’m not as high on the next Christmas special but I’m very interested to hear their thoughts on Series 10.
Massive appreciation that Lono used the Big Finish Diary of River Song theme music for the outro 👏
I’d pay money 💵 to watch them rewatch ‘Forest of the Dead’ now that they’ve seen this Christmas Special. Context is a powerful thing. 👍🏼👍🏼
THIS! Please, It would be amazing to see how they react to it knowing all they know now about who she is and what's she knows.!
This is the second time we've seen Aaron react to this 😁😁😁
In regards to the trowel. I always just figured it was because River is an archaeologist, and it is a tool archaeologists use. Though it could also be a nod to Rory's dad, as well.
The impression Calvin’s talking about is of British boxer Chris Eubank.
Husbands of Rover Song -> Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead -> Name of the Doctor
and when did the wedding happen?
If only they ever listen to The Diary of River Song audio series, i can even imagine the reaction to the FOUR masters
This is one of my favorites. So much love. 💜💜💙💙💙💙 24 years
Props to Lono for using the River Song theme from the audio dramas to close out the reaction! I know he's done it before, but still.
Just rewatched this and realized you used the theme music from River's audios at the end. I really need to catch up on that series.
I love how the Silence in the Library music plays when she unboxes the sonic
A really great lighthearted Christmas special, and so is the next one. Nardole is another one of my favorite companions. Flemming had a nice design too.
And here we see the introduction of one of the best Who companions of all time.
I'm so happy that you guys got to this episode!!! I've been waiting for so long!!! And your reaction to it is just as I expected... AMAZING!!!! Especially your reactions to the guy opening up his head... those effects were quite amazing also.
You missed the "im an archaeologist from the future" line!
Tied with "A Christmas Carol" as my favorite Who Christmas special.
What I love about this episode is that the first half is pure Christmas-y farce and then it kicks into high gear and becomes pure emotion right until the end. You get the best of both worlds.
Its weird by the time season 12 starts they might of caught up and then we’ll be done with weekly reactions after what like 3 years strange
😯THATS GONNA BE SO STRANGE... These reactions have been the highlight of my Wednesdays for such a long time.
14:25 -- it's the first story we see her in (Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead with 10 and Donna), just before she dies and is uploaded into the Library.
She was in The Name of the Doctor. It is after Silence
He could see Her and She guided Clair
I loved this episode. It was a huge payoff to finally see the singing towers after watching River's first episode years earlier. I remember as a little kid watching "Silence in the Library" for the first time asking my older sister if we would ever get an episode where we saw River and the Doctor at the singing towers. She said "no" but then I got to laugh at her when this finally aired.
As others have said - this takes place just before the library, when The Doctor first meets River, and the sonic he gives her is the one that saves, or "saves" her. "Oh, I'm very good!" - sorry, didn't watch to the end. I see you covered that.
I have been waiting for the reaction of this episode! Shame on me not noticing you did it almost a month ago! Lovely episode, lovely reactions
Lol. '8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown', 'QI', 'The Inbetweeners'. Where do these Americans watch these standard British shows? What channel? I know it's a smaller world nowadays...streaming etc., but I find it funny hearing them talk about quintessentially British stuff that I grew up with.
we cant see river onscreen again because she didn't know about the new set of regenerations and physically can't see another doctor
Exactly. She never got to see the later regenerations...
NAH DO Y’ALL HAVE A MINIATURE TARDIS WITH THE RIGSY PAINTINGS ON IT FROM WHEN CLARA DIED😭😭😭😭
I think that they should react to the tenth planet before watching the rest of series 10.
Meh, half of it is still missing. I think they're fine so long as they've seen "An Adventure in Time and Space".
@@matthewwilliams2093 Only 1/4 of the episodes is missing and that episode has been animated anyway.
I still would like to see a writer to do an episode of the picnic at Asgard and Jimmy the fish. Maybe a holiday episode one off.
The Best Suit is in the mini episodes "First Night" and "Last Night" with Matt Smith.
Thanks, Eric! Thanks, Shane! Thanks, Calvin! Thanks, Aaron! 😊
Calvin talking about Greg Davies on 8 out of 10 cats is amazing!
My absolute favourite episode ❤🖤
That conversation was from Silence in the Library/ Forest of the Damned
Such a great episode. Real fun.
Matt Lucas is most famous for a comedy sketch show called Little Britain.
14:35 That's the very first episode she was on, The Silence in the Library.
Just because a day here is 24 years there, it doesn't mean a year there would be long. A year there could be shorter than a day. It depends on the rotational movement and the translational movement of the planet.
Funny hearing you talk about our Greg Davies and panel shows. Panel shows are my life blood
More evidence of why I love Alex Kingston so much.
Oh this one! always! gets me!!
Man, I remember watching Melron reacting to this and now here we are! Good times!
