    Insanely cheap and good quality as well. Imagine living in Vietnam and working (from distance in your laptop) for a European or UK company which means getting paid in euro or pounds which are even stronger than the USD. You could save an insane amount of money while living a good quality life.

      Not impossible as long as you have a residential address for tax purposes. But pretty soon companies will start giving out about GDPR and find some excuses.

    I've encouraged a few of my younger friends from the States to go overseas and teach English; I did it myself from 1984-1987 in Japan and I was in my early 30s. Great experience, and while the cost of living in Japan was much higher than Vietnam ever has been, the salaries were proportionately higher as well for teaching. And I was able to save money to bring back to the States, as well. Unfortunately, most people (younger folks even) remain much too attached to family and familiarity and the prospect of living overseas, while exciting, remains daunting for most folks. Oh, well...choose you life I always say.

      Looks like you could save about a grand each month! After 3 years, a young person could save enough to buy a house!

    • @chrisjuricichxl5
      @chrisjuricichxl5 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Birdylockso i saved a considerable amount--which was why I stayed on another six months after my wife and daughter returned. Except...our daughter's American school wasn't cheap and what we might have saved went to her considerably expensive middle-school tuition.

      @@Biolo-G_KJ any non-romance language is going to be more difficult for a westerner; no common words...sleep...dormir...etc. VIetnamese, FIlipino, Thai...all quite alien but eminently worth studying and learning.

      My guy that might have worked in the 80s where the economies were booming. Not sure if you noticed but the economies world wide aren't doing too good right now and people can't afford basic survival let alone traveling the world. They quite literally cannot afford to choose their life as you always say. This has nothing to do with attachment or thing being daunting we just live in a different world now. Absolute ignorant boomer take.

    We were traveling all over Vietnam over a year ago and left right before the pandemic hit the world. At first, I was very apprehensive about safety, sanitation, service, etc, but was pleasantly surprised that everything exceeded expectations.
    One thing is to watch out for taxi drivers in Hanoi. He charged us 420,000 dong from Noi Bai airport to Hanoi Opera House. The reverse trip on Grab cost about a third. But Other than this, we can't wait to come back.

      You got lucky - I went to Hanoi on early December 2022 and I got totally ripped off by a shady taxi driver. He originally stated 500,000 dong which was comparable to the hotel taxi. So I agreed. Middle of the way he said he had to look up the address of the hotel and increased the price to 700,000 dong - I had no choice as I was already in middle of nowhere at midnight with heavy rain. Last time I am taking taxi in VN - only grab.

      @J D well, depend what palces you visit and how much you spend. I hang with Vietnamise friends and girls, we always use local places for eat or fun. I was ok with 1000USD per month. ofcourse, the girls will always find a cheaper place and they will bargen for me. Cheap place dont need to mean bad place. That is why I love Vietnam and people there. It is easy to spend money if you are in downtown, hanging with people whihc will rip you off as you are white.. I was work till 17.00h, so, not so many time to spend outside as everything is done at 20-21.00. I notice that they dring very fast so we finish even sooner. I often get sick when I eat out. I don’t know why even in American restaurants that is why I don’t eat out. I love to cook. I like to cook food from different countries. For each country I visit I bought a cook book and start cooking. I found that each country has it own delicious food. International food is my love.

    I used to live just west of Ba Trieu street and east of the Ho Bay Mau lake in Hanoi, and there was this old lady I used to go to for lunch before work. I'd pay 20k VND (a little less than $1) for a plate of dried fish, chicken, pork, these meat/veggie rolls, rice, and whatever else I wanted. More often than not I couldn't finish my plate, and I felt bad, until I discovered the lady had take-out boxes. So I'd go there midday for lunch and have leftovers for dinner. This was about a 2 minute walk from my Vietnamese-style apartment. Good times.

      Tax is rather low comparing to western contries. There is no universal healthcare, but there is public health insurance. But since healthcare is pretty cheap, many people tend to pay extra for better private service. Dental care is the most competitive service in vietnam, hence the dental care tourism from foreign contries

    • @TOTKBOTW

      Tips is not common in Vietnam. Westerner and american bring this etiquette to Vietnam. If you go to a bar where they have guys/girls working to pour your drinks, then maybe you can tips them at the end. For restaurants, especially local mom/pop shops, you don’t have to tips. I’ve visited Vietnam twice a year for many years, as Vietnamese American, that’s what I did. All based on how you feel or your generosity, as I sometimes would tips a nice server. They don’t make that much in those restaurants. If you want to experience real Vietnamese food and culture, local shops have better authentic taste than some big restaurants.

    What I’m curious about is if there are any professions other than tefl. The country is very beautiful and I want to work out a way to be able to afford it but if the only job I’ll be able to work as a native English speaker is tefl, which I’m not qualified to do, I may have a more difficult time. Hope someone can answer!

    • @brian-beeler
      @brian-beeler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      _"What I’m curious about is if there are any professions other than tefl."_
      The short answer is other than medical professionals working as instructors no. Many of those that want to live there but not teach English, which can be a grind, go the "digital nomad" route. This was easier in the past when a DL (tourist) visa only required a visa run (trip outside the country) every three months but that's recently been changed with the addition of monthly check-ins at immigration offices.
      The nature of work has greatly changed over the last year and full-time remote has become much more common. If you could get such a job and marry a Vietnamese citizen which would secure you a TRC (temporary residency card) you could live a very comfortable life anywhere in Viet Nam.

He made me wait one year...by then the war was totally over...He never let his hatred of the Viet Cong and the NVA leave his heart...I was way more open minded, due to my Mother , who survived WW 2 Germany as a child...She counseled me that it was the everyday people who truly suffered the horrors of war, not the rich and powerful...I saw things in other countries during my time in the service...I always applied her philosophy to the areas I was operating in...Bless the Vietnamese people for bouncing back and becoming one of Southeast Asia's best self -sufficient country....
