There is no comparison between the minimum wage of a local Asian and an Expat basic survival budget. A Westerner would never live / survive under that kind of circumstances. You know it very well, and you are making money while deliberately providing a fake representation of the reality. This will lead people to get in serious trouble, especially those who are struggling with their pensions back at home and that think they can now move to Asia with 1.000 USD a month. You should be sent to jail.

A meal in a simple restaurant costs as less as US 2, snacks (Banh Mi) US$ 1 ... that means for food around US$ 200 (sometimes western food) a month, rent around US$ 150/month, utilities US$ 50/month, misc. US$ 100/month, healthinsurance US$ 100/month. Of course, as more you have, a better life you have.

@@HadEnough66 it seems you have a mental problem or are paranoid! visa fees (if you need) is peanuts, dentist you do not have monthly (if ever?), laundry costs near nothing, gas you dont need if you do not own a car/bike, internet/phone is in the misc., same transport (if needed). The mentioned monthly budget is a sample for how much you can live. Of course, if you like to live a better life you need more. For emergencies a.s.o. you should have a reserve ... almost everyone has a certain amount. You are unable, or not willing, to understand what we mean with a minimum budget. Anyways, you can think what you like and you can spend US$ 5000 wherever you are, its up to you.

Do not even consider to approach Asia as a retirement destination if you don't have at least 1600 USD monthly income and a good back up deposit for emergency. Forget 100 USD health insurance unless you are under 50 y.o. This is all crap and you will have a miserable experience and become homeless or worst get in jail. Be careful, in Asia with no money life can get very tricky.

I am seventy years old and dependent on the UK state pension. When I post here that I not only live well on it but that it is very lavish and unaffordable for the country in the long run, I am shouted down, derided and called a liar or a freak. That says it all. Most people cannot bear to listen to someone using facts and personal experience to confound their bitter and often political vicarious professional victim narratives.They would prefer it if I just whined nd howled and begged for fake sympathy and validation from total strangers. I am even accused of lacking "empathy" towards other pensioners who have posted their woes only for me to demonstrate that their particular stated financial position is far better than my own. Again, because it is mass-narrative overturning.

@@patriciavandevelde5469 We own a condo in Budapest. No real estate tax, HOA $120/month, utilities $160/month. We usually stay there between April and October. The rest of the year we traveling in SEA, or South America. This approach is very cost effective and convenient. Great base for traveling in Europe.
Best thing I love about Vietnam is the meds. I have high blood pressure & I could just walk into a pharmacy & they would check my blood pressure, then sell me the meds for like 10cents a pill, no doctor fee, nothing. The medical costs in USA is just outrageous.
My blood pressure went right down to normal (without meds or anything special) after moving to Philippines. The doctor complained my BP was better than his. I'm 72

I arrived in Jomtien 2 weeks ago and I can relate to both of you on this video. After just 10 countries in 2 years it already feels like Thailand is more enjoyable then any of the great countries I've been to. I just extended my time here to spend New Year's in Pattaya. I've got a part time girlfriend after just 24 hours in Jomtien. Even though I plan to visit many of the other Asian countries the next 2 years I kind of feel like this might be as good as it gets for guys living on budgets. Well I used to go to different pubs but that's about it, I went abroad once but didn't like the amount of travelling for just one week in the sun and it rained one day and the wind swept the other, but Warmer than the UK in December, I will be buried here when my days are done and if reincarnated would live here again and not be unhappy, most of the time 🏴!?!
living in Cambodia if i tried to be frugal (arduous) $2 a day would get me 1 meal with egg and rice. and 2 meat skewers and a viet Ban Mi for lunch and rhats it. No toiletries water tea(maybe water at the food shop free if i didnt buy my meal in a cheaper take away bag). I think he might be exagerating his frugality somewhat....... now in Thailand i was able to survive on a mere 20c by soaking a single grain of rice and mama noodles in river water until they swelled to the size of 3 bowls. I would simply catch a fish with my teeth and let that ferment in the noodle bowl. After negotiations with local women i found that they could actually lay eggs for free as long as i spoke English to them. In the hot sun one can easilt just distill water from the sweat off of ones skin and bottle the tears of wealthy tourists who cry over spending too much money.

I can confirm that the prices in Supermarkets of most things is as much as the UK when converted into £, but their wages are a fraction of UK wages. No idea how locals there afford to live in the DR

I loved VN but not the visa runs. Cambodia is under $300 for a multi entry retirement visa. Siem Reap reminds me of what Chiang Mai might have looked like 20 years ago.

Just came back from Danang, great place, literally hundreds of restaurants and thousands of cafes, great beach, great weather. The hospital is quite run down and chaotic, they speak even less English in Cambodia aswell and you can't fly directly from Pnom to Danang only from HCM or Hanoi

@ If you are coming to work then you will get a two year work permit. With that you will get a TRC for 2 years like me. I’m living in Vung Tau, this is a great place to live. Border runs can be expensive, you will need to get a Cambodian visa to enter Cambodia usually you pay the bus driver $35 and he gets it for you. Then you just re enter Vietnam. The 3 month visa is about $65 I do not do this myself. I showed his video to some of my friends here and they laughed at it. I rent a nice house here, I pay 8 million VND for that. Shopping for your own food can be expensive here. The government taxes everything foreign very heavily. But if you are happy to live on noodles then food is super cheap. Taxis are cheap and generally living costs are much lower than the west. It’s worth coming here. I love living here. But that video was nonsense. I spend about 30 million a month, sometimes more but you could live on 20 million a month if you had to.

Hi We live off 30K PHP per month. I relocated to the Philippines from the UK one year ago. My wife and I built our new home on the 1000 sq m lot in Isabela province. At the same time we bought a 3 hectare farm to grow rice. Luckily we do not have a mortgage/rent and no electricity bill as we are 100% off-grid solar. Cheers, Simon

I spent 6 weeks in Da Nang this year and came across a few guys like this in the An Thuong district. Despite there being quite a few expats living around there, they all seemed to spent many hours sitting in the Cafes looking alone and sad.... especially the older guys
Great interview! I totally empathize with Mark being from England , since I am also an ex Brit and know some of the cultural changes he faced. He's hopped around a fair bit so his experience is valuable. I chose the Philippines 🇵🇭 and have never looked back but completely understand his references to police encounters. It's actually worse for some locals than expats. Just be super careful not to give them any reason to suspect drugs and make sure not to give over your driving licence in its folder to avoid planted evidence. And record it if possible.

We had a situation here in the family I am "adopted " into where my close Filipino friend and bro was doing his normal motorcycle courier work delivering lechon when he was stopped at a police checkpoint in Lubao, Pampanga. They asked for his licence but he made the mistake of handing over the license folder (mini wallet). They went away in their huddle and then came back and asked him to get off his bike. They said there was drugs in the wallet (shabu) but they had planted it there. I know he wasn't on any drugs because I know him personally and he's been diagnosed with diabetes recently and he takes much more care of his health. So they took his money, his bike, his cellphone and put him in jail. This is not uncommon in some city areas especially near Christmas apparently. He's still in jail but now has an attorney and needs his medication regularly.
So take a picture of yourself handing over your license, with the policeman in the background showing nothing in the folder or license wallet and have the whole scenario livestream on dashcam or equivalent
Also when they offer you a drink of water, politely decline because it's been laced. There have been cases where the "suspect" has declined their water and they beat him to a pulp, forcing him to drink the water. They probably won't do this to a foreigner though but no guarantees.
I've spent about 4 months in Vietnam in total, there are some things I liked about it, but it's really not for me. I don't think I will ever visit again.
The point is its a far lower cost of living than UK or US for example. If you are retired or digital nomad or something then the cost of living somewhere like this is amazing
I remember eating street food in Vietnam. I payed around $8 to feed myself and 3 other people. We ate meat and noodle soup with rice. So it can be done if you avoid the more expensive restaurants.
Most people spend much more in Vietnam. He is a rare one indeed. If you are not an extreme cheap living guru, I would suggest a minimum of $1550 a month. If you can live on less come back ands share where you ended up. Not everyone has this talent. :-)
I’ve cooked in high end restaurants and members clubs in London England over 10 years also, restaurants and private yachts all over the world. Never once was I asked if I have been to university or college cooking certs. Hygiene was usually done/updated while at the restaurant.
When your out in the world if a local your with tells you not to speak as we travel about, its probably not good for you to consider long term stays even if the location is beautiful. Thank you for showcasing potential open societies with welcoming peoples
@VagabondAwake When traveling with a local in Argentina it was suggested we not speak too much in certain areas of the country because some would catch my accent as not local and that it could become unsafe. While in a town called Caminito I was asked where I was from and I responded but then this person in a louder than usual voice exclaimed you're from where? It brought all the vendors within earshot quickly. I was in the country for a month and was able to have a great time regardless of that interesting day. Ready to explore more out there soon. For many living like a king means living at a standard they could not afford before. This is the dream of powerty stricken individuals. Not necessarily financial powerty, there is mental and spiritual powerty. Unlike the masses, some people have the preference of living on a small footprint financially. Spend less, work less, and work to live as opposed to live to work. For many, this is a hard to understand concept. The best way to achieve this life is to go native in the right country where conditions are optimal to an acceptable standard of living / effort needed to maintain that existence. Most people have ballooning expenditures no matter where they are. Some of us are able to live on much less because we are tight with money. Sure, call us cheap if it makes you feel better about yourself. However, at the end of the day we achieved the millionaire lifestyle which for us means living affordably where we feel good and not running in your hamsterwheel.
Yes, native is key for many reasons. You really get to know the people, the country, and yourself. But new travelers often have a harder time going native. We moved to Cyprus from the UK 6 years ago. We love it and wouldn't go back to the UK. We love the more relaxed way of life and how safe it feels here. His advise of just going straight to S E Asia appears very wise to me -- when just comparing the differences from the US - and from only an imaginative perspective (!) - it seems like the right thing for me to do as well. The language barrier with the Spanish is a huge problem for me personally - and very few of Latin American areas speak much English at all (!) and almost none outside of the tourist areas ! - - - His lifestyle is unique and shows what is possible if you aren't afraid to try !!! Leaving the old behind and embrace the new with vigor ?
@@vmoses1979 Most all of the Philippines speaks English - Malaysia too - teaches it in schools (?) + Many Khmer people in Cambodia also speak English in the Capital for international business & in Siem Reap where some 20,000 expats are retired ! Unlike Vietnam - Cambodia has street signs business signs and menus in English !!! They even use and accept the USD ? Vietnam and Thailand aren't English friendly.
The key here is this guy is a seasoned traveler.. There is a major learning curve to to traveling on a budget. I worry about the young backpackers finding these videos because I have encountered some very hungry kids traveling in SE Asia on too little money because they had found this type of info. So, if you have never traveled outside your own country, this is not a realistic budget. You need to triple the amount given here and that is still going to mean a diet of lots of chicken and rice but allows for treats and activities.😊

Agree. Any country that i visit overseas is expensive and it adds up very quickly. Grass never greener. This guy will be back in the UK before you know it!
This guy has a nice outlook on different cultures, learning and adapting. He likely is stretching it a bit on the number of countries he's lived for awhile and the countries he's been to. If he's doing OMAD and living in a hut without power & water, maybe below $400 is possible. Just don't see it, unless he has a bunch of roommates he's not telling us about.

My brother is Vietnamese and always recommends Vietnam to me. The embassy wants not a copy but the ORIGINAL of your birth certificate in order to let you travel there. No word about your ever getting it back. No thanks. Though I would dearly love to visit or even move there, especially as my brother knows so many people there and could help set me up in a safe place and introduce me to some safe people. I trust my brother, but not so much a so-demanding system that could lose my birth certificate forever and just shrug their shoulders lie, So what? I will never get mine back again if lost. For emergencies a.s.o. you should have a reserve ... almost everyone has a certain amount. You are unable, or not willing, to understand what we mean with a minimum budget. Anyways, you can think what you like and you can spend US$ 5000 wherever you are, its up to you.

Do not even consider to approach Asia as a retirement destination if you don't have at least 1600 USD monthly income and a good back up deposit for emergency. Forget 100 USD health insurance unless you are under 50 y.o. This is all crap and you will have a miserable experience and become homeless or worst get in jail. Be careful, in Asia with no money life can get very tricky.

I am seventy years old and dependent on the UK state pension. When I post here that I not only live well on it but that it is very lavish and unaffordable for the country in the long run, I am shouted down, derided and called a liar or a freak. That says it all. Most people cannot bear to listen to someone using facts and personal experience to confound their bitter and often political vicarious professional victim narratives.They would prefer it if I just whined nd howled and begged for fake sympathy and validation from total strangers. I am even accused of lacking "empathy" towards other pensioners who have posted their woes only for me to demonstrate that their particular stated financial position is far better than my own. Again, because it is mass-narrative overturning.
Not surprised he loves Vietnam. I did too on my short stay over 30 years ago. Haven't seen anyone yet who doesn't. I hear it's only gotten better since.

Best thing I love about Vietnam is the meds. I have high blood pressure & I could just walk into a pharmacy & they would check my blood pressure, then sell me the meds for like 10cents a pill, no doctor fee, nothing. The medical costs in USA is just outrageous.
My blood pressure went right down to normal (without meds or anything special) after moving to Philippines. The doctor complained my BP was better than his. I'm 72

I arrived in Jomtien 2 weeks ago and I can relate to both of you on this video. After just 10 countries in 2 years it already feels like Thailand is more enjoyable then any of the great countries I've been to. I just extended my time here to spend New Year's in Pattaya. I've got a part time girlfriend after just 24 hours in Jomtien. Even though I plan to visit many of the other Asian countries the next 2 years I kind of feel like this might be as good as it gets for guys living on budgets. living in Cambodia if i tried to be frugal (arduous) $2 a day would get me 1 meal with egg and rice. and 2 meat skewers and a viet Ban Mi for lunch and rhats it. No toiletries water tea(maybe water at the food shop free if i didnt buy my meal in a cheaper take away bag).

now in Thailand i was able to survive on a mere 20c by soaking a single grain of rice and mama noodles in river water until they swelled to the size of 3 bowls. I would simply catch a fish with my teeth and let that ferment in the noodle bowl. After negotiations with local women i found that they could actually lay eggs for free as long as i spoke English to them. In the hot sun one can easilt just distill water from the sweat off of ones skin and bottle the tears of wealthy tourists who cry over spending too much money.

Just came back from Danang, great place, literally hundreds of restaurants and thousands of cafes, great beach, great weather. The hospital is quite run down and chaotic, they speak even less English in Cambodia aswell and you can't fly directly from Pnom to Danang only from HCM or Hanoi

How much would you suggest for a couple? How much do you spend for border runs? How are they more expensive than Mark suggests?
@ If you are coming to work then you will get a two year work permit. With that you will get a TRC for 2 years like me. I’m living in Vung Tau, this is a great place to live. Border runs can be expensive, you will need to get a Cambodian visa to enter Cambodia usually you pay the bus driver $35 and he gets it for you. Then you just re enter Vietnam. The 3 month visa is about $65 I do not do this myself. I showed his video to some of my friends here and they laughed at it. I rent a nice house here, I pay 8 million VND for that. Shopping for your own food can be expensive here. The government taxes everything foreign very heavily. But if you are happy to live on noodles then food is super cheap. Taxis are cheap and generally living costs are much lower than the west. It’s worth coming here. I love living here. But that video was nonsense. I spend about 30 million a month, sometimes more but you could live on 20 million a month if you had to.

At the same time we bought a 3 hectare farm to grow rice.

I spent 6 weeks in Da Nang this year and came across a few guys like this in the An Thuong district. Despite there being quite a few expats living around there, they all seemed to spent many hours sitting in the Cafes looking alone and sad.... especially the older guys

Great interview! I totally empathize with Mark being from England , since I am also an ex Brit and know some of the cultural changes he faced. He's hopped around a fair bit so his experience is valuable. I chose the Philippines 🇵🇭 and have never looked back but completely understand his references to police encounters. It's actually worse for some locals than expats. Just be super careful not to give them any reason to suspect drugs and make sure not to give over your driving licence in its folder to avoid planted evidence. And record it if possible.

Hi, I’m thinking about moving to the Philippines with my Filipina wife. What did you mean with the situation “make sure not to give over your driving license in it’s folder”? I’m curious about your experience or knowledge to learn from it in advance
We had a situation here in the family I am "adopted " into where my close Filipino friend and bro was doing his normal motorcycle courier work delivering lechon when he was stopped at a police checkpoint in Lubao, Pampanga. They asked for his licence but he made the mistake of handing over the license folder (mini wallet). They went away in their huddle and then came back and asked him to get off his bike. They said there was drugs in the wallet (shabu) but they had planted it there. I know he wasn't on any drugs because I know him personally and he's been diagnosed with diabetes recently and he takes much more care of his health. So they took his money, his bike, his cellphone and put him in jail. This is not uncommon in some city areas especially near Christmas apparently. He's still in jail but now has an attorney and needs his medication regularly.
So take a picture of yourself handing over your license, with the policeman in the background showing nothing in the folder or license wallet and have the whole scenario livestream on dashcam or equivalent
Also when they offer you a drink of water, politely decline because it's been laced. There have been cases where the "suspect" has declined their water and they beat him to a pulp, forcing him to drink the water. They probably won't do this to a foreigner though but no guarantees.
I've spent about 4 months in Vietnam in total, there are some things I liked about it, but it's really not for me. I don't think I will ever visit again.

I remember eating street food in Vietnam. I payed around $8 to feed myself and 3 other people. We ate meat and noodle soup with rice. So it can be done if you avoid the more expensive restaurants.
Most people spend much more in Vietnam. He is a rare one indeed. If you are not an extreme cheap living guru, I would suggest a minimum of $1550 a month. If you can live on less come back ands share where you ended up. Not everyone has this talent. :-)
Visited Nah Trang and Saigon on a cruise not a long stay three days but what I saw was beautiful.
I’ve cooked in high end restaurants and members clubs in London England over 10 years also, restaurants and private yachts all over the world. Never once was I asked if I have been to university or college cooking certs. Hygiene was usually done/updated while at the restaurant.
Could it be because your resume (CV) had cooking jobs listed on it and they were and good places? I don't think he had a cooking CV.

@VagabondAwake When traveling with a local in Argentina it was suggested we not speak too much in certain areas of the country because some would catch my accent as not local and that it could become unsafe. While in a town called Caminito I was asked where I was from and I responded but then this person in a louder than usual voice exclaimed you're from where? It brought all the vendors within earshot quickly. I was in the country for a month and was able to have a great time regardless of that interesting day. Ready to explore more out there soon. For many living like a king means living at a standard they could not afford before. This is the dream of powerty stricken individuals. Not necessarily financial powerty, there is mental and spiritual powerty.
Unlike the masses, some people have the preference of living on a small footprint financially. Spend less, work less, and work to live as opposed to live to work. For many, this is a hard to understand concept. The best way to achieve this life is to go native in the right country where conditions are optimal to an acceptable standard of living / effort needed to maintain that existence. Most people have ballooning expenditures no matter where they are. Some of us are able to live on much less because we are tight with money. Sure, call us cheap if it makes you feel better about yourself. However, at the end of the day we achieved the millionaire lifestyle which for us means living affordably where we feel good and not running in your hamsterwheel.

We moved to Cyprus from the UK 6 years ago. We love it and wouldn't go back to the UK. We love the more relaxed way of life and how safe it feels here. His advise of just going straight to S E Asia appears very wise to me -- when just comparing the differences from the US - and from only an imaginative perspective (!) - it seems like the right thing for me to do as well. The language barrier with the Spanish is a huge problem for me personally - and very few of Latin American areas speak much English at all (!) and almost none outside of the tourist areas ! - - - His lifestyle is unique and shows what is possible if you aren't afraid to try !!! If Spanish is a big issue - Vietnamese is much more difficult. Most of SEA doesn't speak English.

Unlike Vietnam - Cambodia has street signs business signs and menus in English !!! They even use and accept the USD ? Vietnam and Thailand aren't English friendly.
The key here is this guy is a seasoned traveler.. There is a major learning curve to to traveling on a budget. I worry about the young backpackers finding these videos because I have encountered some very hungry kids traveling in SE Asia on too little money because they had found this type of info.
So, if you have never traveled outside your own country, this is not a realistic budget. You need to triple the amount given here and that is still going to mean a diet of lots of chicken and rice but allows for treats and activities.😊

This guy has a nice outlook on different cultures, learning and adapting. He likely is stretching it a bit on the number of countries he's lived for awhile and the countries he's been to. If he's doing OMAD and living in a hut without power & water, maybe below $400 is possible. Just don't see it, unless he has a bunch of roommates he's not telling us about.
