      Yeah, I tried canceling my membership because I had a new job that did not allow me to visit that gym anymore. When I called they told me I had to do it in written form, but the owners just happen to be on holiday and they were "unsure if they can do it before the deadline" said deadline was two weeks out before my contract would renew for another 6 months....so I called them every day, untill they messed up and the owner picked up the phone and they no longer could lie to mr.

    • @nexdemise4182

      AOL (back when it was a thing) was also pretty much impossible to cancel. They had phone centers dedicated and trained to basically throw you around in loops until you finally gave up. My parents eventually just closed the bank account AOL had on file to get rid of them. I think they did receive some demand letters, ignored them, and eventually the ISP part of AOL went under. I wouldn't be surprised if the now noncollectable debt is still being repackaged and resold on the derivatives market.

      As someone who currently works at Cracker Barrel, it’s against corporate policy. Employees (wearing uniform) cannot smoke on the premises, on or off the clock. Some managers may allow it, but if one of the higher ups comes by, it’s immediate termination. I know a guy who got fired when our HR guy came down to visit randomly for smoking by the dumpsters. A lot of people and managers sneak to the bathrooms to vape though 😭

      Did OP say 10 plus smoke brakes? That's a break at least every 48 minutes assuming you work 8 hours a day. That doesn't even count a lunch break, depending upon who you work for the 30 to 60 minutes typically.
      That company must be hemorrhaging money, I'll assume the breaks take 6 minutes, only ten are take a day, so an hour. 5 working days a week for 18 employees means they're costing 90 hours a week for the extra breaks. That's 4,500 hours a year if each employee only gets 2 weeks vacation a year. At Washington minimum wage of $13.69 an hour as of 2021, that $61,605.
      The company could hire 2 and a quarter extra minimum wage workers for that.
      I don't know if it's just me, but I smoke, however, I only use the regular breaks because my work keeps me distracted.
      I smoke more heavily when I don't have anything to do. OP was right to come up with their plan, even with my conservative estimate of 5 extra hours per smoker, of paid breaks each week, that's still really unfair.

      That dude messing with OP was an idiot. It is a universal constant on Earth, never, ever get the tax man involved.
      You certainly don't goad someone who only has something to gain by involving the tax man, into calling them.
      It was a joke made in a Golden Age Batman comic, but the Joker, who isn't afraid of a 6ft tall ninja dressed like a bat. Is terrified of the IRS. Batman can put his ass in the looney bin, but the IRS can put him in big boy prison (federal).

    • @RiptoGakt
      @RiptoGakt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@chaosreaver3597 I can still recall how the Joker went all "AAAAAAAUUUHHHH!!!!" the moment he saw exactly what he owed the IRS. At least he's smart enough to know better than to screw with the guys who handle taxes.

    • @chaosreaver3597
      @chaosreaver3597 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@RiptoGakt I don't remember the issue number, but I'm fairly certain the issue was called "The Joker's Millions". He had three options after he was left counterfeit money as an inheritance from another crime boss.
      1) Admit someone was able to pull a prank on him to get the IRS off his back, but lose creditably as the "Clown Prince of Crime"
      2) Go to jail for tax evasion. Big boy prison time.
      3) Steal the money needed to pay the IRS. Save face.
      He chose option 3. And he took it with a no nonsense approach, no calling cards or gimmicks, just in and out, swipe the money with no monologues or messing about and no convoluted plans. It's the only time he took crime seriously. All because the IRS is the worst combo of bureaucracy and law enforcement.
      Back to the real world, Al Capone is probably the most famous example, but thousands of criminals the FBI couldn't touch have been completely destroyed by the IRS.
      It's weird to think that in most countries someone who amounts to an accountant is more effective than someone authorised to carry a firearm when shutting down illegal operations.

      Tobacco ain't much better when you start in terms of taste and isn't really any worse for you aside from addiction. This isn't to recommend smoking tobacco, that's still a terrible idea but herbal ones are pretty much just as bad, just easier to quit.

And our move in date is the 1st therefore if I'm lineup to move in but previous tenant doesn't move out then I can't move in which happen to me once before and the landlord have to put me up in a hotel for 2 days as per a lease agreement and reimburse me for extension of my storage fee's. So yeah it's not just a day. Oh and for rslash on your problem, I just rent a temporary storage unit and a day in a hotel. It's much easier than a day of hectic move and more economical than letting 2 lease overlapping for a month.

    My husband worked a well-known department store in our city during his younger years. On Black Friday the store was calling out specials for shoppers every hour. He and a fellow employee were called to an area that was soon to call out male and female hankerchiefs and socks for $.50 per single packages. About an hour before store was due to close, they called out the special. My husband and his fellow worker were set up on a platform and he swears to this day that he and his fellow employee watched, stunned, as a wave of people behan rushing their direction. When the customers arrived, they had to start tossing hankerchiefs and socks out into the crowd to survive and nearly didn't once the 300 or so packages ran out. He said it was the only Black Friday he feared for his life, literally.

    Your story about the gym reminded one of my own: when i tried to cancel my contract with a gym and they kept insisting with every call and e-mail that I need to sign some papers and I can only do that in one of their gyms (which were closed due to pandemic). Well let's see what CAN be done online... move all the money to another bank account before the payment day and back the day after (yhea I was loosing a few bucks on transfer fees but was still cheaper than their subscription). A got a call in 2 moths and the guy on the phone said something along the lines of: "If you do not pay the subscription in 2 weeks we will have to cancel your contract". My answer: "Gee Thanks!"

    We got a new GM, who wanted to make his mark. He issued a notice that all leave above four accrued weeks must be taken or be forfeited. I directed him to my contract, which allows up to ten weeks of accrued annual leave, at which point you must either take the leave, or be paid in lieu - no forfeiture mentioned. He shut up on that one, and I made sure to keep my leave at about 8-9 weeks (taking a week every three months, as we get four weeks a year by law in Oz) for the remainder of my tenure, with a nice lump sum payout of leave when I left the company. Don't let them push you around.

    I was a nonsmoker at one of my military units. Originally there was set times for smoke breaks and anyone could go. After a command change, they did away with set breaks and send take them when you need, but don't abuse it. I was at the smoking area talking with some friends that were smokers. The boss came by and said you don't smoke and you can't take smoke breaks. I looked him dead in the face and said I'm taking my second hand smoke break, I sit here and breath in their smoke. It's cheaper and more effective than smoking my own cigarettes. The boss thought about what I said, looked at me and said fair enough, I can't argue your logic and walked away. I was there another 18 months before transferring and he never brought it up again when he would see me outside.

    Like the smoking one, I was the sole non smoker working at Red Rooster (Australian fast food) and I was usually left alone in the kitchen during frequent and long smoke breaks staff took all together.
    I said I wanted a Nintendo DS break and the store manager laughed saying I didn't need a break. I brought up the smoke breaks and she replied that smoking is different because it's addictive.
    I printed out and brought in numerous studies stating that video games are addictive (I didn't actually read the studies, but neither did she so it was no biggy)
    In the end I got my Nintendo DS break but everyone had their smoke breaks limited to 3 maximum per shift and 10 min each which didn't screw over the other staff working.

    The gym story reminds me of something that happened to me. I had to threaten to sue them to get them to stop trying to charge me. I am transgender, and after about 3 months into a two year contract they told me I wasn't allowed access to their facilities. They told me they have policies against transgender people using their pools, locker rooms, and a list of other things that were included in the contract. Of course this policy against transgender people wasn't listed anywhere on any website, contract, or anything, and discrimination in itself isn't legal. They refused to let me cancel it and tried to make me pay out the entire contract, even though they were the ones who broke the contract by not allowing me access the facilities I was paying for. I canceled the debit card associated with the contract so they couldn't take my money, and every time I got a phone call, I'd tell them the same thing. I will not pay to terminate a contract when I was not the one who broke the contract. After 3 years, including a year of them trying to charge me even after the contract expired, I finally got tired of it. I told them that if the contract wasn't cancelled, with all charges dropped, I'd be calling a lawyer for discrimination against transgender people as soon as we got off the phone. I ended up getting forwarded to the vice president of the company who apologized and had all charges canceled. I'll never use Genesis Health Clubs again, and I almost wish I had sued them anyway.

    I just remembered a malicious compliance story that happened to me when I was younger. I worked at a popular fast food place and we used to work overtime when ever we wanted the money was really nice. One day i guess the higher ups complained about the amount of overtime they were paying. Everyone who worked there up to that point got along really well and work was fun. Then instead of just having a staff meeting to address the overtime issues in a respectful and civil way the supervisor began treating us like children scolding us for the things we normally did that was never an issue and one bitchy supervisor.said nobody is to work any overtime ever. One busy day I think we were short staffed or someone was late or something and ended up not clocking out on time and I was berated for it. I decided I was not going to go through that again. I knew it would come back to bite them eventually. I never asked to work overtime again and I was contented 😌. One weekend I worked the morning shift and a few of night shift staff called in for various reasons saying they weren't coming in. The night was shaping up to be a busy one. My shift was ending and the bitchy supervisor was on the short staffed night shift. She came to me while i was doing my shift change duties to ask if I would work a double shift I said na I'm good. She got other people to work double shifts and it was just going to be my station to fill. She said don't you want some extra money I looked at her and said na I don't like money much and left. She eneded up doing her supervisor duties plus working as the back up on my station lol her night was very busy 🤣🤣🤣

I happened to be in early one day around 8:15, who shows up at around 8:45 while was in the loo. Gets his papers and books out (pre computer age) and when I come back from the loo, he is busy working. I said hello and made a big show of rummaging through my stuff on my desk indicating I now knew about his getting in early bullshit. Nothing was ever said but from that day on he stuck around in the office to 4:30 because " they cancelled my early train home, bloody cuts!".

    For the last story: In some Nordic countries, you get an hour off of work for "exercise/physical enrichment" once a week. There's a very strict rule what kind of exercise it involves, but just taking a full walk all the way home counts. (for example: walking/running/bicycling counts, but e-sports or some other "not moving at all" sport activity doesn't). This also means you can get off work early if you actually do the activity (mostly walks for me). I have been super happy about this opportunity, since I can just leave early on e.g. a Friday afternoon and just take a stress-free walk to my apartment. YAY!

    R/ 's move conundrum was strange. During a few moves I've been in that position, but the landlords of the places I would move to would always let me prorate for a few extra days ahead of the lease so I'd have time to move and also clean my previous residence. It is not like this kind of situation is unusual, and why wouldn't they be fine with a few more days of rent paid? There is no way that the new apartment would be move-in ready the day after it was vacated anyway. It had to be empty and ready to occupy.

    12:10 I used to work in an office with a standard 7 1/2 hour day. Managers had a considerably higher salary than the rest of us because they were expected to work reasonable additional hours. Not my manager. In the door on the dot of 9am, half an hour for lunch, and he was out the door by 5pm every day. And usually at least another half an hour a day just chatting.

  • @kjemma
    @kjemma 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That "being on time" nagging has been around forever. Several times a boss (often a new one) has made it crystal clear to us workers that working starts then and then - not later. Lunch was 40 minutes - not one hour etc. Off course its important to be on time every morning and come in after lunch on time, right? Well, then its just as important to leave on time, exactly as the redditpost states. And every time they pressured us about punctuality the reaction became just that. Only that in my line of work there are many an afternoon when tasks emerge minutes before one is finished with the day. And there are many a lunch during a year that have to be cut short to satisfy customer demand, thereby securing all our jobs. So it pays for the company that everybody work 15-20 minutes extra some days. Everybody but the bosses off course. They were often out the door an hour early, to play golf, and regularly took over an hour lunch, while the folks on the floor did the labor. It adds up too. I must have worked a thousand hours for free over 35 years. All this on top of regular overtime which I got paid for. So this flexiblity made us expect the same in return. When denied that flexibility just because management liked to flex their authority, it backfired time and time again. After a short while the same "strict" bosses started asking politely if we could go "back" to the same culture of flexiblity and take those extra loads even if we were technically off the clock? Off course, sir/madam, was always the answer. But we were adament that the principle had to go both ways. Not surprisingly, they agreed.

It's either eat or have a cigarette so I have to make a wise decision every time. Well it's simple for me. If I'm hungry, eat. If I'm not hungry go outside for a cig. 😂 I work part time so my breaks are 20 minutes for every 4 hour shift.

    14:18 If paid hourly it kinda makes sense some of the time, but engineers such as these are salaried... The only thing that matters is their output and how they function with the rest of the company.
    My father owns a company that consists of only engineers(hardware development). They're typically always on the job from 9-3(more commonly 8-4or5), but it's not an ironclad rule. It just makes it easier to work together that way. Aside from that people work the amount necessary to get the work done and bonuses are handed out based on work completed.
