      from what I heard of the US, they usually don't have labor contracts anyway. Many nations have special contracts for teens, with lower hours and special rules.
      I think the US has rules regarding minors working as well.

    • @rushoflife2368
      @rushoflife2368 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@Nerobyrne there is absolutely strict regulations for minors who work in the US. One major part of my old team, was determining who should work when, and balancing hours for the minors was always tough. You can only work them during specific hours and only for a certain maximum daily, meaning if the employee coming in after was unreliable, the team I scheduled would have to make do without their extra employee or the minor because I can’t force them to work longer then their limits!

    • @Nerobyrne

    • @Maddmax26
      @Maddmax26 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Nerobyrne most labor contracts for the kind of wages we're talking about are "jobs" like Paper(boy), e.g. Vendor distributors.
      You basically agree to Deliver products to a location, X times a day/week. Some of these "Contracts" you pay a "fee" for the "right" to do these jobs. Something like "Paper(boy)", might have a "contract" for adult employees, but for "children" they'd just be paid by the hour/job, and only so many days of the week.
      An anecdote of this,
      I knew a guy who was a vendor for Beer, Bread, and Pepsi, all while working at Walmart.
      Guy would work 8+ hours at Walmart a day, + 4-6 hours of vendor a day around town, for 3 different companies every day. He effectively earned around $30/hour total, working an insane amount of hours.

      Welcome to the entirety of employers in the Smoky Mountains. I'm pretty sure there's a federal law that states that any business with more than X number of employees must at least offer them all health insurance. Problem is that the fee they get charged for non-compliance is actually cheaper than giving employees insurance, so they just pay the fee instead.

    For the newspaper story, I'm not a lawyer, but I'm like 90% sure that minors can't be expected to honor contracts. I've heard that its one thing if they choose to honor a contract and it becomes valid after they become of age, but I was made to believe that at any time a minor chooses to opt out of a contract, it has to be respected.

      Newspapers are just in general evil places to work.. But in terms of child labor laws, they get a lot of exceptions for minors, even though theres actually very few minors anymore who deliver newspapers its like 95% done by adults and has been for decades. When I was 19-22 I delivered about 260 newspapers a day too, yeah it pays pretty decent mainly because theres no real way for the IRS to track your earnings, the paper sends you a blank 1099 and most people just pitch them right in the garbage, its okay money so long as you can get your customers to pay you, which... is easier said than done unless the paper handles all delinquencies for you... mine... did not...it sucked.

These folks who won't wear a mask forget that the business is privately owned, just like the plant I worked in and can enforce their own safety protocols, such as "no shirt, no shoes, no service" as well as wearing a mask to protect their employees and customers. If they came to my home without a mask I do not have to let them enter, their so called civil right to be mask free stops at my doorstep.

At least me forgoing winter wear won't make others sick, masks help keep that in check.

The covid virus is 100 nanometers. The microscopic gaps in surgical masks is 1000 times that size and the gaps in cloth masks is 5000 times that size!! It would be like trying to stop someone throwing a handful of marbles at a house covered by some building scaffolding!! Nearly all or all are going to pass through without any résistance!! Hundreds of scientists and specialists in Europe and the UK have signed a protest against mask mandates saying it's a comfort blanket that does literally nothing to help you but makes the government seem like they are doing something to help!! www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/07/17/cloth-face-masks-comfort-blankets-do-little-curb-covid-spread/

    I felt the hairstylist story on a visceral level. When all the dog grooming salons came back from the COVID shutdown, a lot of people had gotten dogs (or another dog), and we were slammed, booked weeks or months in advance. Every now and again, we'd have someone angrily cancel an appointment because we were unable to move it to another time that day for their convenience, as the schedule was PACKED.
    We would oblige, cancel the appointment, apologize for the inconvenience, and fill the spot with the very next phone call. Then, the day would arrive, and Angry Caller shows up for the appointment she cancelled, dog in hand. We would just explain that when she told us to cancel the appointment, we did that, and now we don't have a groomer available to groom her dog because we all have full schedules.
    This happened every couple weeks for some reason, never with the same person twice. They always acted cordial in person, and would simply reschedule and get on the cancelation list. It was like they were so embarrassed they flew off the handle that they tried to pretend it didn't happen, but pretending to be nice doesn't sprout a groomer from the earth to groom your dog.

    I work in an immersive theatre as an actor. We still have a mask mandate in place because we have hundreds of people coming through every day and we have a number of close contact experiences. Guests are told they *must* wear a mask if they want to take part in these experiences, but I still get people coming into my part maskless. Fortunately, my character is an obnoxious, domineering a**hole, so when I ask them why they don't have a mask and they smugly reply "I'm exempt" then I respond with "Well then you just exempted yourself from my office. You either wear a mask or leave!"
    It's amazing how many of them will suddenly decide they *can* wear a mask when they find out they're going to miss out. In fact, of the several thousand people who have been through the attraction since we reopened, I've only had two people who left when being told they had to wear a mask. The close contact part only lasts five minutes maximum.
    Don't get me wrong - I know there are people who genuinely cannot wear a mask. I know several people who can't, especially one who suffered an abusive relationship and gets triggered if anything goes over her face (her ex-partner used to grab her around the neck and face before abusing her), but in my experience the vast majority of "exempt" people simply don't want to wear one.
    Oh, and I still constantly have to remind people that the mask goes over your nose and mouth, not just your chin, and that taking the mask off every time you speak kind of defeats the purpose...

"I was like omg, please can you take your mail. I have so much of it and several med-large sized packages." (You have to take the mail out, unless they have put a hold on it, then you can leave it at the P.O.) I drive the truck around and help her load all the stuff in to her SUV. Back then I was working in Marble Falls, TX. Which is known for being a retirement town. Bunch of rich, stuck up ppl that have more money than sense. She tells me "That one client is paying her $500 A DAY to be on call for her. And cut her hair at her place. Plus travel(like a extra 20 bucks, but hey money is money), plus free brunch made by a 5 star personal chef. She's been sitting at home doing nothing, being paid what she makes on a good day. So she can once a month go cut this old lady's hair. Whenever she wants it done. And she's still taking the odd client she likes in at double the normal rate."

So yes, whilst you can decide not to wear a mask, you however cannot force businesses to deal with your bullshit. Your actions have consequences, so you can do whatever you want, but so can everyone else, and we don’t have to deal with you if we don’t want to.

    I strongly suspect that the boss in the first story was also maliciously complying. He may have sounded begrudging, but I think he knew that it was a ridiculous request and green-lit everyone's overtime. If I were a manager and someone insisted my staff all come in when there's nothing for them to do, I'd happily let them claim overtime for doing nothing

    The OP in the second story could have walked at anytime. You can't have a contract with a child. I'm pretty sure that the boss would find if he took him to court that he would have been laughed out of it.

    That paper route story was hilarious. How dumb is that boss? "Do this or I'll fire you" only works as a bully tactic on people desperate for their job, NOT for people who literally want to end their contract. He basically said "Do this or else you'll get exactly what you want!" How did he think that would end? He's not only a shit boss, he's an absolute idjit.

    The newspaper, is this in the US. In the US last I knew, minors are not allowed to enter into a contracts. They are considered a child until they turn 18.

    I had a paper route back in the early 70's. It was an evening paper, I could deliver it after school, but every 2 weeks I had to collect the payments from the customers and late Saturday afternoon I was required to drop off the collected cash at the paper's office. There was an amount set by the number of customers I delivered to, and I had to pay that amount even if some customers were not home to pay when I tried to collect.
    If they hadn't paid, I had to cover the shortfall from my earnings & hope to make it up next collection period.
    After a couple months of this I found out about minimum wage laws, did some calculations, quit the paper route & got a job as a dishwasher. Easier work, more money, and a steady paycheck.

    I think bad bosses use the line "If you don't like it, leave!" as a bargaining chip. But they don't realize they will lose their most valuable employee because they are so stuck up to realize their hubris will put them out of buisness.

    no way in hell that the paperboy delivery was legal, there’s child labor laws and there’s no way in hell that he was required to work before 4AM and the attempt to get him to do so would have resulted in a huge fine and slam from the state no matter how conservative that state is

    In the paper route story, I don't know what country op is in, but most places don't allow minors to enter contracts. In the US and Canada minors can enter contracts, but they are voidable, meaning the minor can exit it at any time. There's a lot more complexity to it than that, but the boss may not have been able to even sue OP if they did stop working.

  • @silverstar1178

    For the paper route kid, he basically got fired for not breaking the contract, which to me sounds like the employer breaking the contract. OP probably could have pressed charges
