      Same with insurance payments. You visit the doctor this month, pay out of pocket, but have to wait months to get reimbursed, but when you owe $30, they threaten to garnish your wages for that lunch fee.

      @@jamesnorman9160 I remember a story from another subreddit (I forget which one) where OP quit and it was almost a year before they managed to beat it into *someone's* skull that they no longer worked there and should therefore not be receiving constant angry calls about no-shows.

      They probably knew what they were doing. Didn't want to fire an actual employee so they made a token move on paper, just to look like they took action. Still reflects badly on the company.

      @@laurieharper1526 As the son of a contractor, I can reassure you that isn't how it works. The lost two weeks will have to be made up at the company's expense. And their response wasn't entirely token. By retroactively firing them they can cut the old supervisor's pension. Probably not $2 million, but enough to recoup some losses.

      @@shannonp1656 It still would have made far, far more sense to fire the dumbass pipe manager who enforced that arbitrary bs, especially since they would have a good 2-80 witnesses confirming that it was *that* particular douchenozzle who cost them that near $2M right there. Can't exactly pretend that some "lowly" workers' words aren't worth that much weight, especially since they're about 2-80 that they could get statements from.

    I'm always amazed that companies don't want to do jack until they get called for it. I had an online purchase that hadn't arrived. 0 contact from the store. Tried several times to reach out, then posted a negative review. Within an hour I had a message saying they'd lost a tiny and ignorable part and were trying to find it before sending it. I told them "I don't care about that part, I have 10, just send the thing I bought."
    For those wondering - a nintendo DS and the missing piece was the stylus.
    Their kicker? could I edit my feedback? I did - to say "they only contacted me after I posted this, finally offering to resolve it after 3 weeks of silence"

      Yup, it's the online equivalent of speaking loudly about the product you bought being defective, it's much more effective because they can lose more customers that way. Sad that it has to be that way but it's the way of the World.

      the TLDR is that the veggie bin in my fridge broke. fridge is 3 years old, I have a warranty for 5 years, and both the warranty company and the manufacturer are trying to deny it.
      I also live somewhere where products are required to last "a reasonable period", which I would not consider that to be
      I'm doing all the proper stuff first including sending the info to the regulatory body that covers it, but man it's going to be a salty day when everything comes to a head

      I've worked IT for nearly 3 decades now, and the biggest cases of waste I've seen during my career, were always new leadership that didn't comprehend or understand how things worked, and they'd cost the company millions. rinse and repeat. They'd come in, guns blazing, wanting to change how everything works, only to switch back to the original configuration after 2-3 months. This happened so regularly, that when we got new leadership, everyone prepared for things to run in the gutter for a month or two, until we could bring the new 'leader', up to speed on reality.

      This dumb idea that gubbermint always bad private corporations always good is so stupid. In either case it depends on the people involved, the organisation structure, corruption etc. The only difference is that sure, maybe a few people get much richer from a private company (look at privatisations in the UK for example) but it doesn't necessarily make anything more efficient or better. In both cases, they suffer when funding is cut, and prosper with the right investment, strategies and workers. And no I'm not saying all government is better, it's naive to make such blanket statements as obviously there will be cases where private is better than public, and vice versa.

    Did something similar to the c# story. I was hired for my expertise in one subject, found out later the job involved a ton of skills, I had no idea how to do, so I learned it on the job. The people that interviewed me didn't know enough about the actual needs of the job, so gave me an interview that they understood. I had realized later, that I wasn't remotely qualified for the job, but I did it, and learned it. I really enjoyed that experience. And only got the job because the hiring people were more inept about the requirements than I was, so I looked great.

      My favorite boss, ever, told me in the hiring interview that he could train a monkey to "do the job," but it took the right attitude to do it WELL. So, he wasn't so concerned about "do you have all the specific qualifications right now?" as he was, "Do you have a team-player attitude, and a mind to learn new things, as needed, to keep up with a dynamic job, that changes frequently?"
      Golly, I just LOVED working for him. He told me, once, that if I finished my Bachelor's degree, in literally any subject, including dance, that he would promote me to a Data Manager. I thought about it for a hot minute, but then said, "I see what the Data Managers do every day, and I don't want it. Sure, they get paid more than I do, but I'm happy where I am. I LOVE my job." And I did. I really did LOVE that job. Right up until the company was taken over by another company who said, "You may be #1 in the industry, with fewer resources, but we have more resources, and aren't as successful as you, so you have to stop doing things the way you've done them, that worked, and do things OUR way, instead. Oh, and faster! We have no actual reason to move up all the deadlines, but we're going to move up all the deadlines, anyway, just to show that we can! Why are so many people quitting?! For that matter, why have so many people suddenly taken short-term disability to go for psychiatric treatment from having mental breakdowns? For that matter, why are so many people physically collapsing on the job? It's office work! It's not that hard. Oh, well. We'll just lay off the entire Research and Development branch of the business, and make do with the products we already have. We don't need NEW things in the medical business."
      I hate that new company SO MUCH.

The only person at our company who knew anything about it is gone, and that's why we need a replacement. I guess we'll just have to TRUST all the applicants."
      Highly technical, but unpopular, with very few actual positions in the country, means that not very many people will actually train for it, and that means that a person could easily bluff their way into it.

    Yeah, where I work, if the office staff tried that with us in the shop, we would instantly ban them from our end. We’d just cite it as enhancement to safety. Even now when they come to the shop they gotta wear ppe (safety glasses, safety shoes, hard hat depending on situations) so it wouldn’t be hard to amp that up.

      One of my favourite bosses was a guy who always wore fancy suits at work. But he also weren't prude. He visited every department for a chat and to check up on progress. Checking oily pieces of metal or help tightening bolts in a dusty machine. He obviously cared for his style, but the workers came before his clothes.

    The first story. I'm sorry, was this story about a work place or a high-school? 7 weeks of work, the best part $2,000,000 was wasted because the cool kids didn't want to have to share space with the commoners.
    What kind of production facility doesn't allow the fabricators have access to the schematics without supervisor approval in the first place? And all of this was because one guy took a better paying job, that they blamed for a work stoppage caused by one arrogant tool.

      Well, considering it was something about contruction work related to nuclear tech for military use if i remember correctly, it might be possible that they had reason not to allow all staff to go through those scematics... but who knows, most likely it was just management too lazy to regularly check up on stuff.

      @@Gnarfendorf I could understand nuclear military tech being a good reason for restricting access, but OP was able to walk into an unsecured area and browse those schematics for days without being noticed. So I seriously doubt that is the reason, besides a nuclear reactor isn't exactly a classified secret like a weapon.
      If anything the digital copies and print outs are more of a security risk anyway. Most places have appalling tracking of paper waste and laptops grow legs all the time. It's an arbitrary rule place by some dip[expletive] to make supervisor seem more important than the guys who have to wield pipes.

Rarely do businesses have a setup where the Management/Salary people outnumber the Wage Earners and can completely fill in the previously annoyed/fired/quit/striking Wage Earners 100 percent.

      Common Sense and Forethought are really uncommon and rare concepts to most people. You'd be surprised at how many people really don't sit there for 5 minutes to realize consequences for a decision in the process they work on. This is why consulting businesses make so much money. When 98% of people don't do the obvious things and constantly waste money on stupid decisions, the 2% that analyze and tell them otherwise are going to have a massive chunk of profit.

      That makes two of us Mitchell! There's very little if any in the way to office politics at my company, no SJWs, paid voluntary annual bonuses for the last 10 years, and is entirely owned by my colleagues, the employees, of which I'm happy to say I'm now one of! Hell even the company director / founder and CEO are very friendly, and I'm on a first name basis with both of them!
      I'll be returning to the office full time on Monday, the first time since the last of week of Feb 2020. I'm so looking forward to interacting with my colleagues, my mnager, and my supervisor who recently highlighted my contributions to the company's current sales and customer retention efforts, evcen if I'm not part of the development teams focused on our next generation product which is priming us for the future. All in all, I could hardly envisage a more perfect job for myself. So I appreciate your sentiment, and thank the Creator every day that I have been blessed with it!

    Always got to the hand that feeds your nuisance:
    I once had a billing error with Amazon (bank thought it was a fraudulent payment). Amazon got their money in time, but apparently didn't process it fast enough, so they sent a debt collector. Who tried to collect a debt already paid in time. The collector wouldn't back down, so I told them to check with Amazon. One day later I get a call, where he claimed he did that, and that I now had to pay additional fees, for wasting his time. (I had the confirmation that I had paid from Amazon, but he wouldn't listen.)
    So I just sent a very angry email to amazon, and CC'd it to two friends (in the know) who worked at newspapers (one regional and one national), about how amazon is using third party contractors to threaten and harass innocent customers, detailing everything that had happened, and threatening to contact my legal counsel should I get another bill from that collector.
    I never heard of either amazon or the debt collector again, but since his business disappeared from the internet shortly after, I like to claim credit.
    Given how ruthless Amazon is with it's own workers, I can imagine how little they care for independent contractors.

      A lot of people employed in those positions are completely out of touch with the work. They were hired from law or business schools because they're good at presenting numbers that appease the board. Then they get put in charge of say, a mechanical/manufacturing sector and know nothing of such a work environment. To them if it works on paper it should work in real life but they've never had to experience real world conflicts and issues. If they fuck up they just get another similar job, mid and upper management can be a super high turnover sector due to this.

      @Csyk It's also often a "money saving" tactic, hiring people under qualified or for a lower position then what you are actually hiring them for so you don't have to pay them as much. She probably thought hiring someone specialized in the actual skills they needed would cost more, so hiring a person with the same skills as the old one and just sticking to the old way of doing things, in her mind, saves money. A lot of these business school types also tend to focus on cost and not productivity.

    not an accountant but I feel like 2 million for a Naval Reactor sounds like they lost one ship for production or potential repairs or overhauls, usually a Destroyer would cost around 270 million dollars so if the reactor costs 2 million that's sounds cheap when it comes to the US navy

    i'm pretty sure youtube see's *any* interaction as positive. so even if your video's got down vote bombed, it would still technically be helping your channel in the algorithm.
    i could be wrong, but that's what i remember seeing in other videos that talk about it said.

      Yeah, downvotes are just interactions, same as up votes. I'm not even sure it actually helps a viewer to dislike something they dislike. I still get tons of illogical suggestions from the algorithm if the like/dislike feature actually had value.

    You mean the ones that use horrible words, like, "assisted" and "blonde"?
    Seriously, the list of words that have been demonetized by TH-cam is ridiculous.
    And it leads to readers saying, "almost adult" instead of "teen" or "16 years old" because heaven forbid they include such details as a NUMBER, if that number is less than 18.
    I think my favorite, though, is that they actually censored the word "censored."
    And the list keeps changing all the time, so content creators think they're OK, and create and post videos, only to have them taken down, because, SHOCKER!, they said, "cyst" in a video about skin conditions, or even, GASP! "Democrats" or "election" in a post about politics. These are all words that have been demonetized.

    From story 2: This doesn't have anything to do with coding. I was going to college to become a health food inspector. While I was in college I had gotten a job at a chicken restaurant. My job was to season the chicken. I read the proper way of cleaning each piece of chicken before seasoning them. I knew from my safety classes that a box of chicken was only to be out for 20 minutes. Cleaning them the proper way with just one bag it took me well over 20 minutes to do. I asked one of the guys to show me how he did it and he showed me how doing it their way took part of the chicken too. He skipped some parts and I was uncomfortable with doing it that way, but it worked just the way the company wanted it. After a time I could clean and season 8 boxes within the 20 minutes. Even the guy asked to watch me and he even said "That is not to actual way to do that you know". I then said "it works right"? Other people were suppose to clean and season chicken too, but I was able to do so much that they had literally no chicken to clean or season. It taught me as a health food inspector the way they say it needs to be done and the way it gets done are sometimes two or three different ways. I was still strict, but at the same time allowed some things that I knew were still safe to pass.

    TH-cam is so used to my habit of watching his newest upload as soon as I open the app so that days upload is literally first on my recommend, don't gotta look for it TH-cam already has it set up for me. His videos are the first TH-cam video I watch every day.

    I tend to only place a review when something goes wrong. I honestly believe that the way a company handles an error on their part says way more about them than all the things that went right.
    Like two weeks ago. I ordered a dvd from a company in Belgium. I live in The Netherlands. They send me a different dvd with almost the exact same title. The day I received the wrong dvd, I called them up right away. They promised to call back, after physically checking if they still have the dvd I ordered. Took an hour, and they called back. They had send me the correct dvd (which I already knew because I had received the tracking info by email already). And I could keep the dvd they send by mistake.
    Now, they got a good review! Something had gone wrong, but they fixed it fast and well! They didn’t get 5 stars on trustpilot but 4 stars. But they contacted me afterwards thanking me for the good review, acknowledging that a lot of people would instead have given a really bad review.

    The C# story reminds me of the part in The Imitation Game, where the candidates are given a test that is supposed to be so difficult that it cannot possibly be completed within the allotted time. The genius who wrote the test says that he's not testing their completion, but how they go about finishing it.
    A woman comes into the testing room, with nothing but men in there, argues that she is NOT a secretary, but has come to apply for the job, and they finally agree to let her test, as well, with a pandering, patronizing, "Oh, very well, let the little girl play" expression. Not only does she complete the test, correctly, but she does it in a matter of minutes.
    She was hired.

    My local high school has a basic programming class that works in C#. I’d say I’m relatively fluent regarding it, but it honestly doesn’t take a very extensive knowledge of it to do much - it’s a fairly straightforward programming language regardless - so I can say with certainty that OP managing to fool an entire company into believing they were fluent in C# is pretty realistic lmao. More power to you, OP.

    Ex-Nuclear Manufacturing employee here, wasting a few million dollars on nothing being done is not unheard of; a reactor project costs billions - the company I worked for built 4 reactors for China back in 2011, and the budget for that was about 5 billion.
    There are a lot of "holier-than-thou" types in the industry who get up into salaried postions and think they're God's gift to mankind. As soon as the higher-up kicked him out of the office, i knew exactly where the story was going.

    The C# story, it happens all of the time, haha. It's what happens when the wrong person is running a company, and you have to make the company succeed in spite of them.
    It is what most of my work experience actually is focused around, succeeding for the company in spite of a business owner, the worst being my former employer, who thought he knew how to do software development, but didn't even know the basics of a language he claimed to be an expert in.

    The thing that most non-programmers don't realize, is that once you know how to program, picking up a new programming language is no big deal. All programming languages have similar elemants, e.g. loops, conditionals (IF statements)and soubroutine/function calls, they just express them differently. And the "vocabulary" is much smaller than an actual spoken/written language.

      I would just like to add (in case anyone is interested in the field) that there are a number of different categories of programming languages. In each category, this is true, the languages are all very similar. Learning other categories, however, can be a bit more challenging. But still worth it!

    The CEO from the last story knew they were going to lose the doctors contract that is why they wanted it swept under the rug real quick after it was posted! The doctor probably ripped them a new one for the review on their page. Privet practices thrive on word of mouth for clients and negative reviews can be extremely bad for them... Makes me wonder if the company had to get that review down to keep the contract with how much they bothered OP about it! lol
