    Wagons are hot and diesels are hot. Brian Cooley checks out how well BMW combines the hotness in the 328d diesel wagon.

    9 years later and getting cooler!! I just picked up a 2014 sedan for 17k with 14k miles!!! My first diesel and its been nothing short of amazing so far. The gas mileage has been great. It's by no means a "fast" car but it's got a way of making it feel a lot quicker than the numbers would have you believe. At least the hp numbers. The low down torque really makes it fun and it just feels like a solid car thus far. I think this is for sure is a diamond in the rough these days. The auto trans is splendid! I wish i had the wagon but couldn't pass up on the low mileage.

    Still a great review and although VW ruined things for everyone else, a good well engineered (and thus good exhaust) turbodiesel drivetrain still is compelling, not just for mpg numbers but also for sheer torque and ease.

    In 5 years: Wagons are admittedly pretty subjective. I do love SUVs but I also *love* Sport wagons, but not everyone does. If Diesel however is not HUGE in the USA by then, we are truly idiots. The MPG is worth switching to diesel and with the sweet turbodiesels available, you're crazy not to consider one.

      We drove this car model with 2 passengers who both can drive, we go over I70 over the night from Denver to Kansas City which is about 600 Miles used 80% of the fuel tank only. We weren't trying to go Eco mode at all, it was normal plus it is fall so we have AC and seat heating on low at 3 seats. Needless to say, my friends 328D cost him nearly 70K Canadian Dollar but it is barely noticeable on its price tag. I think after this trip it kind of lock him in this car till it dies.

    I think they reupload it because they have somehow make a mistake on the diesel vs gas pay back period. They use $3.6 for gas and $3.9 for diesel. But the 328i will NOT run on 87, so they need to adjust the whole thing (hence the line COMPARE TO MIDGRADE/PREMIUM in the video), I think they have calculated 3.7 years (15k miles/ year) yesterday. Maybe thats the reason, other thab that bit, everything was the same

    I'm disappointed that wagons are not sold in North America. I loved my dad's old Ford Focus wagon. The wagon is just as practical, if not more practical than a crossover. They're spacious, manoeuvrable, fuel efficient, and you can get AWD on some of them. This just brings up the question of what's the point of a crossover over this anyways? You're paying more for a vehicle that likewise cannot go offroad...

    • @afh7689
      @afh7689 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dennis Xu There are plenty of wagons sold in North America, but all the ones I know of are premium vehicles (BMW 3-series wagon, Mercedes E-series wagon, Audi A4 wagon, Volvo V60). Toyota sold the Matrix for a long time and some of the Prius models are sort of a wagon. The Hyundai Elantra hatchback is also close to being a wagon, but very small. Subaru sells crossovers (Crosstrek & Forester) that are long and look like wagons, but with a ground clearance like awagon.

      @lastfirst5542 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess the point is just that it is not "cool" in the US. You know, Audi has got an RS6 .. wagon, which basically a car that could do everything, since it has got it all. But still, people would still buy an X3 without AWD, because it is an SUV, and that is cool. You can even put an underpowered engine in there !

    I'm European and I love diesels, but this diesel makes little sense in the US, at least as a sedan. I see that you guys only get the 328i and 328d wagon, but in sedan form a 320i would make much more sense at 6K$ less. I also don't get why your 328d (181HP) (not sold in Europe) is less powerful than our 320d (184HP). Here the price difference between a 320i and a 320d is only around 3K$ and not 6K$. For a 6K$ price difference we get a 325d (221HP), so also don't get why there's such a big premium over there.

      Emissions are also a factor. The only way for diesel cars to meet EPA Tier 2 and later US NOx emissions standards is to use urea injection SCR, adding extra upfront and running costs/hassle. US engines are also tuned differently for emissions, at the cost of power and fuel economy. On the other hand, diesel cars could meet Euro 5 and sometimes even Euro 6 emissions standards without urea aftertreatment. Even Euro 6, phased in years after US Tier 2, still allows several times more NOx than the US standards. Combined with diesel fuel being more expensive than gas, diesel cars ended up not being more economical overall to operate in the US.

  • @aidan1585
    @aidan1585 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    In Europe and other markets it's the 320d, it's called a 328d for North America because "Biggest is best", a 328i in North America is still a 328i in Europe.

      You see, that is why American cars are usually described as being bad, since they usually have zero handling, zero quality, and 1 big engine. But that is OK. Don't be surprised that in Europe, really nobody buys American cars. Cause they are : too big, consume way too much, have cheap quality (everywhere, actually, except the engine). So, choose.
